Of Trees and Forests: French Guiana

The Amazon rainforest has always fired the imagination, rich in hundreds of thousands of plant and animal species that have not yet revealed all their secrets to us. The kapok tree, repository of the founding legends of the Wayana people, majestically overlooks the canopy. It is an inhabited giant: life takes refuge there on all levels, from the folds of its buttress roots to the mazes of thorns that dot its trunk. From the forest floor to the lush canopy, the infinitely small influences the infinitely large, and interconnections play out between species in an ecosystem that is unique in the world. But at the crossroads of life, deforestation is nevertheless lurking!

Series Description:

Secret networks, Wood Wide Web, superorganism… A scientific and discovery series, Of Trees and Forests opens the doors to a world we only thought we knew. Committed scientists, researchers, indigenous people and more guides us in our quest to unveil the trees genius, their interconnections with other animal/vegetal species and the invisible but fully interdependent ecosystem behind it. Through one legendary tree, each episode explores a primary forest with its own climate, fauna and flora. By revealing their superpowers (purify water, stabilize the climate, stock energy, reduce flooding and erosion…), the series serves as wake-up call to remind how urgent and important it is to preserve our endangered forests.
