Against all odds and polar advice, a Muslim chaplain, a French biologist, a Qatari princess and eight other women from the Arab World and the West attempt to ski across the melting Arctic sea ice to climate change ground zero - the North Pole. In EXPOSURE, director Holly Morris and her crew capture this story as the team navigates everything from frostbite and polar bear threat, to sexism and self-doubt in an intimate story of resilience, survival and global citizenry. The 2018 expedition featured in the film remains the last-ever to reach the North Pole.
The Chicago Tribune
“A triumph.... a delight and joy for viewers, a chilling revelation... An essential cinematic document.”
CBS News
“An evocative portrait of human endurance, and how climate change is affecting one of the world’s most alluring, and deadly, places.”
Moveable Feast
“...Committing these women’s journey to film is likely to get others comfortable with entering places thought to be unwelcoming to them no matter where they are in the world.”
5280 Denver’s Mile High Magazine
“The film is a tale of resilience, adventure, and environmental enlightenment.”
Film Threat
“Morris masterfully cuts together a beautiful documentary extolling the human spirit to conquer the unconquerable. With Exposure, she captures the beauty of untouched nature and weaves together a story of suspense and thrills.”

00:01:14.199 --> 00:01:17.368
I had an e-mail
and it said congratulations
00:01:17.619 --> 00:01:19.245
you have been selected
00:01:20.663 --> 00:01:23.333
to be on the team
of the North Pole expedition,
00:01:23.333 --> 00:01:24.959
all women North
Pole expedition.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:27.212
So I read it
and then I read it once
00:01:27.212 --> 00:01:31.216
and I closed it
and then opened it again
00:01:31.216 --> 00:01:33.510
just to make sure
that e-mail was still there.
00:01:34.052 --> 00:01:36.971
>> Obviously so cold you won't
be able to take the gloves off.
00:01:38.681 --> 00:01:41.893
Minus 40.
So how will you cope, Misba?
00:01:41.893 --> 00:01:43.978
You need to take
a hot water bottle into bed.
00:01:43.978 --> 00:01:45.480
>> I might just do that, you know.
00:01:45.480 --> 00:01:47.107
>> What was the story about
00:01:47.107 --> 00:01:49.400
when you went the wrong way down the motorway?
00:01:51.694 --> 00:01:53.738
>> Don't let Misba
navigate the team,
00:01:55.865 --> 00:01:57.951
you'll end up in South Pole.
00:01:59.244 --> 00:02:01.454
>> We're trying to inspire
other women,
00:02:01.454 --> 00:02:03.623
empower other women
and show them that we can ...
00:02:03.623 --> 00:02:06.668
>> So we can't inspire
other men, empower other men?
00:02:06.668 --> 00:02:09.546
>> But men always go though,
we should involve men and women.
00:02:09.546 --> 00:02:11.381
>> How many men have been
to the North Pole?
00:02:11.381 --> 00:02:12.757
>> It's always men
that does adventures.
00:02:12.757 --> 00:02:13.967
>> What is that like all the ...
00:02:13.967 --> 00:02:16.928
>> Don't you think it's always
men that do adventures?
00:02:16.928 --> 00:02:18.847
So I want to create
the difference.
00:02:18.847 --> 00:02:20.807
>> Yeah? Good. Good. Good on you.
00:02:36.823 --> 00:02:39.159
>> I need to do something
to remind myself this is me,
00:02:39.159 --> 00:02:40.910
this is what I can do.
00:02:40.910 --> 00:02:42.871
>> I can't talk about
the North Pole
00:02:42.871 --> 00:02:45.123
without talking
about climate change.
00:02:45.123 --> 00:02:48.459
>> The truth of every person
comes out no matter
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:50.628
how hard they try
to keep it in
00:02:50.628 --> 00:02:53.590
because you'll be
in the harshest conditions.
00:02:53.590 --> 00:02:55.175
>> Natures give me peace.
00:02:55.675 --> 00:02:58.678
It's like conditioning, you know
for the soul.
00:02:58.678 --> 00:03:02.432
>> As a journalist,
rule number one is be curious,
00:03:02.432 --> 00:03:03.766
be open minded.
00:03:03.766 --> 00:03:07.270
>> I will be the first Saudi woman
00:03:07.270 --> 00:03:09.355
to ski to the North Pole
00:03:09.772 --> 00:03:12.859
>> The North Pole, who would
have thought the North Pole,
00:03:12.859 --> 00:03:15.320
you know, this is like, the North Pole?
00:03:16.529 --> 00:03:18.239
>> The whole world has been my life
00:03:18.239 --> 00:03:21.784
for most of my adult life.
00:03:21.784 --> 00:03:23.912
But I've never skied
to the North Pole.
00:03:25.288 --> 00:03:27.290
I could go for
an expedition myself,
00:03:27.832 --> 00:03:30.168
but it would feel like
a bit of a hollow victory
00:03:30.168 --> 00:03:32.378
unless there was
something deeper.
00:03:51.147 --> 00:03:53.358
>> Every good expedition
runs off of chocolate.
00:03:54.234 --> 00:03:58.154
And then we have the toilet tissue, very important.
00:03:58.154 --> 00:04:00.240
And there's a lesson
that I learned the hard way
00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:02.492
that I can now pass on
to the rest of the team.
00:04:02.492 --> 00:04:04.702
You have to be very careful
when you're using these tissues,
00:04:04.702 --> 00:04:07.080
which are really useful
to use as toilet paper.
00:04:07.705 --> 00:04:10.250
But you have to make sure
they're not the menthol kind.
00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:12.460
That's bad news.
00:04:21.678 --> 00:04:28.017
[ Chatter ]
00:04:28.017 --> 00:04:30.311
>> It's amazing how often
when people ask me about trips,
00:04:30.311 --> 00:04:33.022
you know, what was the scariest moment?
What was the best moment?
00:04:33.022 --> 00:04:36.025
It's amazing how often
they are one in the same moment.
00:04:36.734 --> 00:04:38.695
I remember being on my own
in Antarctica
00:04:38.695 --> 00:04:41.072
and it was
a really horrible day.
00:04:41.072 --> 00:04:43.992
You couldn't see anything.
It was a total whiteout.
00:04:43.992 --> 00:04:46.661
I might as well have been
in a capsule in space
00:04:46.661 --> 00:04:49.747
because it felt like
the whole of civilization
00:04:49.747 --> 00:04:52.917
was just a fairy story that I've
been told and it was all a lie.
00:04:52.917 --> 00:04:55.628
There was nothing out there.
I was crying in my goggles,
00:04:55.628 --> 00:04:57.755
which was then freezing
on the back on my goggles.
00:04:57.755 --> 00:04:58.506
>> Oh, god.
00:04:58.506 --> 00:05:00.341
>>
I couldn't see anything anyway.
00:05:00.341 --> 00:05:03.344
It was just
an absolute nightmare of a day.
00:05:04.971 --> 00:05:08.641
And then there was another part
of my brain that was going,
00:05:08.641 --> 00:05:10.977
"Wow, look at this!
00:05:10.977 --> 00:05:14.272
You're in the middle of
Antarctica by yourself skiing!
00:05:14.272 --> 00:05:17.108
You're a polar explorer!
This is incredible!
00:05:17.108 --> 00:05:19.569
This is everything
you ever dreamed of as a kid.
00:05:19.569 --> 00:05:21.154
This is amazing."
00:05:22.447 --> 00:05:26.117
>> This project is all
about having an adventure.
00:05:26.117 --> 00:05:28.369
But it's also about
the cultural experiment.
00:05:29.954 --> 00:05:32.415
>> I wanted to put together
an expedition
00:05:32.415 --> 00:05:36.461
that brings together women from
the Arab world and the West.
00:05:39.088 --> 00:05:42.133
It wasn't just trying
to pick people
00:05:42.133 --> 00:05:43.676
that I thought were great,
00:05:43.676 --> 00:05:45.303
that I thought
I could fit well with.
00:05:45.303 --> 00:05:47.430
It was trying to get
the right mix.
00:05:47.430 --> 00:05:48.931
And also, I'm very aware
00:05:48.931 --> 00:05:51.809
that if you put too many
similar characters together,
00:05:51.809 --> 00:05:54.187
that's a recipe for disaster,
that's never going to work.
00:05:54.187 --> 00:05:56.397
>> As you take a walk
around the tent in a minute
00:05:56.397 --> 00:05:57.607
and just have a look.
00:05:57.607 --> 00:06:00.360
Now you've got four people,
you've got all the poles in,
00:06:00.360 --> 00:06:03.863
and you just pull out the tent
so that it's nice and straight.
00:06:06.115 --> 00:06:07.992
>> When I got the first call from Felicity,
00:06:07.992 --> 00:06:10.244
I suppose she was trying
to filter out the people
00:06:10.244 --> 00:06:11.871
who would be fearful.
00:06:13.623 --> 00:06:15.625
She's like, "We're going
to the North Pole,
00:06:15.625 --> 00:06:19.003
there's going to be polar bears,
it's going to be stupidly cold,
00:06:19.003 --> 00:06:20.546
there's going to be
ice below you.
00:06:20.546 --> 00:06:21.798
There's no solid ground."
00:06:21.798 --> 00:06:23.925
She gave us
the worst-case scenario.
00:06:23.925 --> 00:06:25.885
And I was like,
yes, yes, yes, yes.
00:06:27.178 --> 00:06:29.472
>> That was four minutes.
All right.
00:06:29.472 --> 00:06:31.974
>> That's pressed on, let's go.
00:06:31.974 --> 00:06:35.103
We're just looking for
the best way to that waterfall.
00:06:35.478 --> 00:06:37.313
>> I'll be very open about this.
00:06:37.939 --> 00:06:39.607
When Felicity said
it's all-woman expedition,
00:06:39.607 --> 00:06:43.820
I'm like, oh, that's going to be tough.
And I was terrified of this.
00:06:44.904 --> 00:06:47.907
>> I've had maybe two
female friends my entire life
00:06:48.449 --> 00:06:50.118
and I'm not very good
with women.
00:06:51.160 --> 00:06:54.622
Women, I feel, have a lot
more drama connected to them.
00:06:55.248 --> 00:07:01.295
And I am not very emotionally
involved with people.
00:07:04.173 --> 00:07:05.550
>> You know technically,
00:07:05.550 --> 00:07:08.010
we don't necessarily have
to get to the waterfall.
00:07:08.010 --> 00:07:09.887
>> [Indistinct].
00:07:09.887 --> 00:07:12.056
>> This will be the most
difficult part for me,
00:07:12.807 --> 00:07:14.600
especially in
a stressful situation.
00:07:25.236 --> 00:07:26.446
>> How do you know ...
00:07:27.238 --> 00:07:30.992
>> How do you know which one
is left and which one is right?
00:07:31.909 --> 00:07:33.536
>> you guys are tent mates
for the whole trip?
00:07:33.536 --> 00:07:34.745
>> Yes.
00:07:34.745 --> 00:07:36.831
>> So why are you doing this?
00:07:36.831 --> 00:07:38.040
>> For the money.
00:07:38.040 --> 00:07:39.333
[laughter]
00:07:39.333 --> 00:07:40.543
>> For the money.
00:07:41.377 --> 00:07:42.962
>> I think the all-woman aspect.
00:07:43.129 --> 00:07:44.964
I think, like, when women
come together,
00:07:44.964 --> 00:07:47.091
there's something really powerful.
00:07:47.091 --> 00:07:48.676
>> So today we've done the skiing.
00:07:50.094 --> 00:07:51.679
>> The hardest thing I’ve done
00:07:54.891 --> 00:07:56.476
>> Just turn it off.
00:07:56.476 --> 00:08:00.605
Put that pan lid between the flame and the tent!
00:08:01.397 --> 00:08:03.983
Pan lid between the flame and the tent!
00:08:04.025 --> 00:08:05.526
>> Put it out! Put it out!
00:08:06.444 --> 00:08:10.573
>> We had a bit of a fuel leak.
Fuel just started spewing out.
00:08:11.407 --> 00:08:12.909
This can't happen
in the North Pole
00:08:12.909 --> 00:08:15.745
because this is the difference
between life and death.
00:08:16.370 --> 00:08:19.499
It's what will keep us warm,
00:08:19.499 --> 00:08:22.043
what will feed us,
what will dry us.
00:08:22.043 --> 00:08:25.505
Am I looking suitably
freaked out?
00:08:32.053 --> 00:08:36.182
>> It's not very deep.
I mean like literally, that.
00:08:40.561 --> 00:08:41.812
A bit deeper there.
00:08:43.231 --> 00:08:46.317
I think this might suit
our purposes quite well.
00:08:47.026 --> 00:08:49.195
[sinister laugher]
00:08:50.071 --> 00:08:54.158
So we'll be spending days on ice
that's over an ocean.
00:08:54.158 --> 00:08:57.662
Although we are doing everything
to make sure none of us gets wet
00:08:57.662 --> 00:09:00.790
the whole time that we're there,
there is the possibility
00:09:00.790 --> 00:09:04.460
that someone ends up
in the water accidentally.
00:09:04.460 --> 00:09:07.338
>> Okay. All right, Misba.
You're being brave ...
00:09:07.338 --> 00:09:08.714
>> I am.
>> ... for being the first one.
00:09:08.714 --> 00:09:10.216
>> Yeah, I am.
Oh yes, I am!
00:09:10.550 --> 00:09:11.425
Oh!
00:09:12.134 --> 00:09:12.843
Ah!
00:09:12.843 --> 00:09:14.345
>> That's it! Well done, well done! Now...
00:09:17.056 --> 00:09:20.935
>> Roll in snow, and then leg it
back to the tent and get warm!
00:09:22.853 --> 00:09:24.730
Leg it back to the tent.
00:09:24.730 --> 00:09:25.982
>> Oh, god.
00:09:25.982 --> 00:09:27.608
>> Nataša, ready for you.
00:09:29.902 --> 00:09:33.489
>> One thing that really
attracted me to this project
00:09:33.489 --> 00:09:37.994
was to see how I would behave
in this environment,
00:09:37.994 --> 00:09:41.622
being faced with really,
really low temperatures.
00:09:41.622 --> 00:09:43.874
>> Are they ready?
>> Yeah.
>> Great.
00:09:43.874 --> 00:09:46.294
Olga's going to take your boots.
Okay.
00:09:48.462 --> 00:09:50.464
>> I am not afraid, but ...
00:09:50.464 --> 00:09:51.340
[gasps]
00:09:53.968 --> 00:09:55.177
>> There we go. Right.
00:09:55.177 --> 00:09:57.179
you got wet,
that's it, that's it.
00:09:57.763 --> 00:10:00.057
All right, there you go,
lie down on the mat.
00:10:01.267 --> 00:10:04.562
Woo, get your front wet.
Woo, that's it. All right.
00:10:05.146 --> 00:10:08.691
>> We'll all be skiing
on that ice that is disappearing
00:10:08.858 --> 00:10:10.776
that won't be there
in a few years.
00:10:10.776 --> 00:10:14.989
Like, I'm really aware that my niece,
my nephew, my little cousin,
00:10:14.989 --> 00:10:17.325
you know, it's something that
they won't even dream of,
00:10:17.325 --> 00:10:18.993
skiing to the North Pole.
00:10:18.993 --> 00:10:20.745
>> Get the wet off!
Get the wet off!
00:10:20.745 --> 00:10:22.038
>> So for me as a scientist
00:10:22.038 --> 00:10:25.625
to ski on that thin piece
of ice that is still there,
00:10:25.625 --> 00:10:27.209
this is amazing.
00:10:29.211 --> 00:10:30.838
>> Bollocks, my feet are cold.
00:10:33.299 --> 00:10:37.845
>> My first adventure was going
to the Atlas Mountains,
00:10:37.845 --> 00:10:40.306
so I've never been away
from home
00:10:40.306 --> 00:10:41.932
when I've lived with my parents.
00:10:42.892 --> 00:10:46.479
So once married, I've always
had my husband with me, or...
00:10:46.854 --> 00:10:48.606
... the children,
but never on my own.
00:10:48.606 --> 00:10:50.983
So I wanted to see
more of the world now
00:10:50.983 --> 00:10:53.277
and my son finally
got to university
00:10:53.277 --> 00:10:57.323
and I thought,
"Now I'm going to, you know, treat myself."
00:10:57.740 --> 00:11:01.952
So I booked a holiday abroad,
climbing Mount Tubko.
00:11:01.952 --> 00:11:04.330
The next hurdle
was to tell my husband.
00:11:04.330 --> 00:11:08.793
So I told him
that I want to do this thing.
00:11:09.293 --> 00:11:10.878
He wasn't happy with it.
00:11:10.878 --> 00:11:12.713
Saying, you know, it wasn't
the right thing to do.
00:11:12.713 --> 00:11:15.299
But you obviously need
to get it out of your system.
00:11:15.299 --> 00:11:20.554
So do it once and that's it.
He was fine about it.
00:11:20.554 --> 00:11:22.181
And I looked
at the number of grades
00:11:22.181 --> 00:11:23.432
and I didn't understand them,
00:11:23.432 --> 00:11:25.726
so I thought "Oh five,
it must be quite easy."
00:11:25.726 --> 00:11:27.937
So I thought maybe five ...
00:11:27.937 --> 00:11:29.313
I didn't understand
these gradings.
00:11:29.313 --> 00:11:31.232
And she kept saying to me
you'll be fine.
00:11:31.232 --> 00:11:33.025
You've done mountains.
I said, yeah.
00:11:34.110 --> 00:11:37.029
Actually there were
six men and two women.
00:11:37.029 --> 00:11:39.573
It was hard
to keep up with them.
00:11:39.573 --> 00:11:42.743
I took one little step,
they took four.
00:11:42.743 --> 00:11:44.578
[laughter]
00:11:44.578 --> 00:11:47.081
When, um, we'd finished the mountain
and everything,
00:11:47.081 --> 00:11:50.209
and on the last day,
the guide had asked me, he goes,
00:11:50.209 --> 00:11:54.630
"We're surprised that as a Muslim
woman you've come with us.
00:11:54.630 --> 00:11:57.049
Did your husband not mind?"
I'm going, "No, no, no,
00:11:57.049 --> 00:11:59.844
not at all. He's allowed me and everything."
And that was my adventure.
00:12:00.428 --> 00:12:04.348
[ Laughter and clapping ]
00:12:04.348 --> 00:12:05.933
>> That was hard work.
00:12:06.267 --> 00:12:08.811
>> I'd never been to a cinema
until I got married.
00:12:09.353 --> 00:12:11.605
And I've never eaten out
until I got married.
00:12:12.648 --> 00:12:15.401
Oh, dear, this is hard work.
All right. There we are.
00:12:16.152 --> 00:12:18.821
We inspire our children
as they're growing up
00:12:18.821 --> 00:12:21.741
to do things differently
from what we had done.
00:12:21.741 --> 00:12:23.451
But when our children
are grown up,
00:12:23.451 --> 00:12:25.453
we then don't do
anything for ourselves.
00:12:26.620 --> 00:12:29.039
Gosh I wished I'd learned
skiing when I was young.
00:12:31.417 --> 00:12:33.836
I wish I did a lot of things
when I was young, but ...
00:12:34.795 --> 00:12:37.840
... everything comes
in its own time.
00:12:47.266 --> 00:12:49.059
>> There's so much snow.
00:12:50.686 --> 00:12:52.521
>> Where's the wind coming from?
00:12:53.105 --> 00:12:55.316
>> God, I hope that's not
like a storm coming.
00:12:56.192 --> 00:12:59.987
>> We've just set the tent up
and there's a snowstorm outside.
00:13:01.155 --> 00:13:03.783
Got my flask of water, and ...
00:13:05.284 --> 00:13:07.328
... my sweetie bag.
00:13:07.328 --> 00:13:09.330
So we're going to wait here
for about,
00:13:09.330 --> 00:13:11.499
what time do you think
we'll be here until?
00:13:11.499 --> 00:13:13.375
About 10 minutes.
00:13:13.375 --> 00:13:18.547
And then we're going to
hopefully dig ourselves out
00:13:18.756 --> 00:13:22.843
and start sledging again.
00:13:49.745 --> 00:13:50.788
>> What are you doing?
00:13:51.288 --> 00:13:53.541
>> We're kicking off the snow
from our tent.
00:13:53.541 --> 00:13:55.334
It's falling apart!
00:13:56.085 --> 00:13:58.003
It's shrinking by the second!
00:13:59.922 --> 00:14:03.217
>> Not funny but it still is.
00:14:22.820 --> 00:14:24.655
>> Twelve hours of storm
00:14:25.781 --> 00:14:27.616
And the tent is collapsing.
00:14:49.346 --> 00:14:52.933
>> It's half past five,
I'm in my sleeping bag.
00:14:53.726 --> 00:14:56.395
It's very cold.
I haven't slept.
00:15:01.358 --> 00:15:04.820
I daren't drink any water
because I don't want to go out for a ...
00:15:06.363 --> 00:15:09.700
... a wee in this weather
and then get blown away.
00:15:11.493 --> 00:15:13.370
A difficult night.
00:15:13.954 --> 00:15:15.247
[ groans ]
00:15:15.247 --> 00:15:17.499
I just want my bed.
00:15:28.135 --> 00:15:30.846
[ ominous music ]
00:15:33.015 --> 00:15:34.308
>> My boots are here.
00:15:35.726 --> 00:15:41.190
I think my bag, it's here somewhere, I hope.
00:15:42.816 --> 00:15:46.278
The snow started to come in
from that side
00:15:46.278 --> 00:15:50.532
and it started to drown our tent
and push the tent inwards at us.
00:15:51.825 --> 00:15:53.869
I felt like I was
actually drowning in there
00:15:53.869 --> 00:15:56.830
because it was just coming
closer and closer and closer.
00:15:56.830 --> 00:15:59.458
And it reached to a point
where it was here.
00:15:59.458 --> 00:16:02.461
And it was quite scary.
I was actually trying to think like
00:16:02.461 --> 00:16:04.171
"Will this be my end?"
00:16:09.760 --> 00:16:12.388
>> This happened...partly because
of...
00:16:14.098 --> 00:16:16.725
... human error and inexperience.
00:16:18.018 --> 00:16:19.520
You know...we could have
00:16:20.312 --> 00:16:22.147
done more to protect this tent.
00:16:23.357 --> 00:16:27.486
But also partly because,
you know sometimes you do
00:16:27.486 --> 00:16:29.113
just get walloped
by the weather.
00:16:29.113 --> 00:16:31.657
And I think we've just got
walloped by the weather.
00:16:35.828 --> 00:16:40.124
It was a bit of a wake-up call,
which could be really scary.
00:16:41.166 --> 00:16:45.087
When we get to the North Pole,
we need to be absolutely on form
00:16:45.087 --> 00:16:46.922
working at our best
right from Day One.
00:16:47.631 --> 00:16:49.883
>> Okay.
>> Do you want to...start down
00:16:53.721 --> 00:16:55.597
[ intense music ]
00:17:02.855 --> 00:17:23.417
[ melodic praying ]
00:17:27.755 --> 00:17:30.424
>> When travelers travel
through the desert,
00:17:30.424 --> 00:17:32.634
they just stopped
and they would just do their prayers.
00:17:34.887 --> 00:17:37.306
I want to pray
at all these places,
00:17:37.931 --> 00:17:41.518
on the hills, on the mountains,
everywhere in the world.
00:17:44.646 --> 00:17:50.527
And there's 11 women from across
Europe and the Arab countries,
00:17:50.527 --> 00:17:52.529
there's me,
and we're going to ski
00:17:52.529 --> 00:17:54.907
the last 100 kilometers
to the North Pole.
00:17:56.909 --> 00:18:00.329
>> I've been training
for a good 1 1/2 years I'd say?
00:18:00.329 --> 00:18:02.414
I think I started off
with swimming with you.
00:18:02.414 --> 00:18:04.166
>> Yeah, that's right.
>> Yeah. So ...
00:18:04.166 --> 00:18:06.043
>> We started off with you
and you couldn't even swim.
00:18:06.043 --> 00:18:09.171
>> I couldn't swim, yeah. Thank you for that!
00:18:09.171 --> 00:18:10.547
>> Do you remember?
>> Yes!
00:18:10.547 --> 00:18:12.466
Such a steep learning curve actually.
00:18:12.466 --> 00:18:14.051
>> Do you have that fear the ice will break underneath the tent?
00:18:14.802 --> 00:18:18.430
>> Yeah, I couldn't swim really.
00:18:18.430 --> 00:18:21.850
>> Yeah, there is that fear,
yeah, where the ice will crack
00:18:21.850 --> 00:18:23.352
and what we're going to do.
00:18:23.352 --> 00:18:26.021
>> The ice on the North Pole
is always moving,
00:18:26.021 --> 00:18:29.650
so we could ski 20 kilometers
in one day
00:18:29.650 --> 00:18:31.026
and then get up in the morning
00:18:31.026 --> 00:18:34.029
and find that we're
10 kilometers behind
00:18:34.029 --> 00:18:35.948
because the wind
has moved us back.
00:18:35.948 --> 00:18:38.492
So just pray that the wind
pushes the other way
00:18:38.492 --> 00:18:40.077
to help us.
00:18:41.954 --> 00:18:44.248
>> Obviously you’ll be celebrating your 50th there.
00:18:44.248 --> 00:18:45.124
>> Oh, brilliant,
00:18:45.124 --> 00:18:46.333
you have to bring that in?
00:18:46.333 --> 00:18:48.293
[ chatter ]
00:18:51.421 --> 00:18:53.382
[ intense music ]
00:18:58.387 --> 00:19:00.722
>> The last year has been a tough one emotionally,
00:19:01.223 --> 00:19:02.474
mentally.
00:19:02.474 --> 00:19:03.725
I've been going
through a divorce
00:19:03.725 --> 00:19:06.395
and that obviously leaves you
in a bad state of mind.
00:19:06.395 --> 00:19:09.398
It messes with your confidence,
with your abilities,
00:19:10.190 --> 00:19:11.775
with anything, really.
00:19:17.739 --> 00:19:19.324
>> I don't even know
where to start to talk
00:19:19.324 --> 00:19:21.285
about Saudi Arabia.
00:19:21.285 --> 00:19:24.913
You just need to understand
what is prohibited.
00:19:26.582 --> 00:19:29.918
And then there's all these
gray areas like cycling.
00:19:30.294 --> 00:19:33.755
It's not a norm to find a woman
biking in a public space.
00:19:34.715 --> 00:19:39.136
The way that I saw it was I want
to bike, so I'm going to bike.
00:19:39.136 --> 00:19:42.723
So I started this group
where we're five women maximum
00:19:42.723 --> 00:19:46.143
and we go every Friday
morning biking by the beach.
00:19:49.438 --> 00:19:51.106
>> It is kind of shocking,
honestly.
00:19:51.648 --> 00:19:55.444
But you do need, like,
high fat content.
00:19:55.444 --> 00:19:57.070
Milk chocolate is your friend.
00:20:00.365 --> 00:20:01.325
>> I imagine it’s very stressful.
00:20:01.325 --> 00:20:03.368
Skiing ten hours, that’s crazy.
00:20:03.911 --> 00:20:06.914
>> Someone was basically
saying that your mind
00:20:06.914 --> 00:20:08.665
gives up
before your body does.
00:20:08.665 --> 00:20:12.336
And a lot of times
what happens is ... you know, we ...
00:20:12.336 --> 00:20:14.755
we stop as soon as our mind
just takes a wrong turn and
00:20:14.755 --> 00:20:16.465
and "Oh!
I'm tired, I'm going to stop."
00:20:17.299 --> 00:20:17.674
>> Yeah.
00:20:17.674 --> 00:20:20.427
>> But our body can actually
still keep going, you know?
00:20:21.887 --> 00:20:26.516
[ intense music ]
00:21:03.053 --> 00:21:05.305
>> When we first said
that we were going to come
00:21:05.305 --> 00:21:09.768
and do some polar training
in the desert of Oman,
00:21:09.768 --> 00:21:12.145
a lot of people raised
their eyebrows.
00:21:12.145 --> 00:21:15.524
"What are you doing?"
But when you get here,
00:21:15.524 --> 00:21:18.485
there's a lot of similarities,
as bizarre as that sounds.
00:21:19.278 --> 00:21:21.405
The fact that the nature
of how you move
00:21:21.405 --> 00:21:23.407
across this landscape
is very similar.
00:21:24.032 --> 00:21:27.661
And then just the way that
you can't plan in the desert
00:21:27.661 --> 00:21:30.163
because all the dunes
have moved and changed.
00:21:30.163 --> 00:21:32.374
And unless you're on the ground,
00:21:32.374 --> 00:21:33.875
you can't make
those decisions in advance.
00:21:33.875 --> 00:21:37.337
And that's exactly what it's
going to be like in the arctic.
00:21:37.337 --> 00:21:40.090
You have to let go of any idea
of having a plan
00:21:40.090 --> 00:21:42.384
and just make decisions
on the ground as you go.
00:21:48.765 --> 00:21:51.727
You know, I'm somebody
who likes to be in the thick of it.
00:21:51.727 --> 00:21:53.729
I don't like to be
on the periphery.
00:21:53.729 --> 00:21:55.439
And so standing
her waving goodbye
00:21:55.439 --> 00:21:57.232
as they disappear
across the dunes,
00:21:57.232 --> 00:22:00.152
it's um, yeah, it's a little bit gutting.
00:22:01.778 --> 00:22:03.739
>> Tell you what: you get this one
and I'll make that one ...
00:22:03.739 --> 00:22:05.324
I'll make that one work.
>> You sure?
00:22:05.324 --> 00:22:06.908
>> Yeah, of course.
00:22:06.908 --> 00:22:11.830
[ Chatter ]
00:22:11.830 --> 00:22:13.915
>> You know, I've lived all my life.
00:22:13.915 --> 00:22:17.210
Like, I don't know, "Mariam's not
a physically able
00:22:17.210 --> 00:22:18.503
to do such a thing."
00:22:18.503 --> 00:22:21.006
or, "Mariam doesn't
know how to ...
00:22:21.798 --> 00:22:24.009
She doesn't know how to camp or
she doesn't know how to do this."
00:22:24.009 --> 00:22:25.594
No, I can learn these things.
00:22:26.136 --> 00:22:28.805
As cheesy as it sounds
when people say,
00:22:28.805 --> 00:22:30.849
"Anything is possible"
it is true.
00:22:32.934 --> 00:22:34.686
>> Okay, time check,
how are we doing?
00:22:35.645 --> 00:22:37.230
>> Five minutes, guys.
00:22:47.532 --> 00:22:48.950
>> You got to slow down a sec.
00:22:48.950 --> 00:22:50.535
>> If I slow, my feet are burning.
00:23:03.048 --> 00:23:04.591
>> So we've been debating
the question of heat
00:23:04.591 --> 00:23:06.051
and cold for a while now.
00:23:06.051 --> 00:23:07.260
>> I prefer heat.
00:23:07.260 --> 00:23:09.012
>> Cold.
>> Cold. Definitely cold.
00:23:09.012 --> 00:23:10.013
>> Hot, hot, heat.
00:23:10.013 --> 00:23:11.264
>> You heat?
>> Thank you.
00:23:11.264 --> 00:23:12.516
>> Big time.
00:23:12.516 --> 00:23:13.725
>> Heat?
>> Yeah.
00:23:13.725 --> 00:23:14.935
>> Absolutely.
>> Really?
00:23:14.935 --> 00:23:16.186
>> Yeah.
>> Anytime.
00:23:16.186 --> 00:23:19.106
>> You've got venomous snakes
instead of polar bears.
00:23:19.106 --> 00:23:20.440
>> I prefer the polar bears.
>> That's fun.
00:23:27.823 --> 00:23:29.491
>> Misba, are you heading
for the ridge?
00:23:29.491 --> 00:23:31.076
>> We're already to the ridge.
00:23:31.618 --> 00:23:33.245
>> This is going to be interesting.
00:23:35.872 --> 00:23:38.166
>> Are you sure about this?
>> Yes, come on.
00:23:38.166 --> 00:23:39.543
>> Oh my word.
00:23:39.543 --> 00:23:40.210
>> Ah!
00:23:40.419 --> 00:23:41.086
[ grunts ]
00:23:41.086 --> 00:23:43.797
>> Come one, Misba.
This is your genius decision, eh?
00:23:44.423 --> 00:23:45.090
>> Whoo!
00:23:45.090 --> 00:23:45.799
Oh, wow.
00:23:45.799 --> 00:23:47.884
>> Come on, we can do it.
Come on.
00:23:48.802 --> 00:23:51.304
>> I work as an outdoor
instructor so it was hard for me
00:23:51.304 --> 00:23:53.306
to take a step back,
but I tried to do that.
00:23:53.306 --> 00:23:54.891
>> I'll just give me feet a rest.
00:23:57.477 --> 00:23:58.728
>> I need to keep
reminding myself,
00:23:58.728 --> 00:24:00.147
it's not about each individual,
00:24:00.147 --> 00:24:02.065
it's about how you work
as a team,
00:24:02.065 --> 00:24:03.859
which is one
of my biggest concerns.
00:24:05.777 --> 00:24:08.280
The team is just as strong
as the weakest link.
00:24:08.280 --> 00:24:10.365
And if you've got a person
who's really weak,
00:24:10.365 --> 00:24:12.200
that's the weight
you need to carry.
00:24:13.452 --> 00:24:16.121
My priority is:
I want to get to the North Pole.
00:24:16.121 --> 00:24:17.539
with the team would be great.
00:24:17.539 --> 00:24:19.499
That would be
the best case scenario.
00:24:20.083 --> 00:24:22.711
I'm still going to do it
with or without them.
00:24:24.212 --> 00:24:27.090
>> Today, with the GPS,
how was it out there?
00:24:27.090 --> 00:24:29.176
>> I had to hold
my tongue a few times.
00:24:29.176 --> 00:24:30.927
It's just differences
in opinion.
00:24:30.927 --> 00:24:32.137
When one person goes ...
00:24:32.137 --> 00:24:33.889
the leader, goes one way
than the other,
00:24:33.889 --> 00:24:36.683
and I must admit, hands up,
I did that once and I'm like,
00:24:36.683 --> 00:24:39.728
"Oh, but that's clearly
the easier way." So ...
00:24:39.728 --> 00:24:41.605
And then I move because
I was the second person
00:24:41.605 --> 00:24:43.398
and then everyone follows me,
which in the North Pole,
00:24:43.398 --> 00:24:44.733
you can't get away
with doing that.
00:24:44.733 --> 00:24:45.942
>> No.
00:24:45.942 --> 00:24:50.030
>> So often with expeditions,
when they fall apart,
00:24:50.030 --> 00:24:51.907
or when they don't work,
when they fail,
00:24:51.907 --> 00:24:53.408
there's lots of reasons given.
00:24:53.408 --> 00:24:55.494
"Oh, well it was
the worst weather in 50 ...
00:24:55.494 --> 00:24:57.120
you know, you hear all that a lot.
00:24:57.662 --> 00:25:00.707
I've seen it in teams before
where things are difficult
00:25:00.707 --> 00:25:04.377
and you translate that into this
kind of negative spiral.
00:25:04.377 --> 00:25:06.588
But when you sort of dig
below the surface
00:25:06.588 --> 00:25:08.632
it's because someone
within that team
00:25:08.632 --> 00:25:10.133
wasn't made to feel of value
00:25:10.133 --> 00:25:12.677
or the team wasn't
communicating properly,
00:25:12.677 --> 00:25:15.096
and so that's why
I feel that so much work
00:25:15.096 --> 00:25:18.517
has to be put into that because
that doesn't happen by accident.
00:25:19.893 --> 00:25:22.521
They should be feeling
really proud and pumped up.
00:25:22.521 --> 00:25:24.689
But it doesn't feel
like that at the moment.
00:25:25.398 --> 00:25:27.025
>> One word to describe that day.
00:25:27.275 --> 00:25:28.902
>> Il terrible!
00:25:28.944 --> 00:25:30.779
>> Spiders.
00:25:30.779 --> 00:25:32.864
>> Too many.
00:25:33.073 --> 00:25:35.075
>> Lots of sand. Lots of sand.
00:25:35.534 --> 00:25:37.619
>> For me, it's been a challenge. So it's been...
00:25:37.619 --> 00:25:39.621
>> Oh, I'm glad
you said those words.
>> A good challenge.
00:25:39.621 --> 00:25:40.914
>> Yes, but it has been
a challenge.
00:25:40.914 --> 00:25:42.165
>> That makes me feel so good!
00:25:42.165 --> 00:25:43.124
[ Laughter ]
00:25:43.124 --> 00:25:44.876
>> That it has been a challenge for you.
00:25:47.420 --> 00:25:51.091
[ bright music ]
00:25:55.387 --> 00:25:56.388
>> Okay.
00:25:56.388 --> 00:25:57.806
>> Ten seconds.
00:25:59.266 --> 00:26:00.517
>> Have fun.
00:26:03.728 --> 00:26:06.398
>> I had a dream
that my house was repossessed.
00:26:06.982 --> 00:26:09.276
So maybe it's a good thing I'm
learning how to live outside.
00:26:16.825 --> 00:26:19.703
>> I'm doing my utmost to try
to stop the sand getting in it.
00:26:27.294 --> 00:26:29.421
>> Another day.
>> Another day.
00:26:29.421 --> 00:26:31.339
>> Another day in the desert.
00:26:36.177 --> 00:26:37.762
>> Can you just slow down?
00:26:38.722 --> 00:26:40.765
>> It doesn't matter
how much we train.
00:26:40.765 --> 00:26:43.268
Everyone has to be
on the same wavelength.
00:26:43.268 --> 00:26:45.270
And ultimately,
we have to completely trust
00:26:45.270 --> 00:26:47.397
each other and communicate
with each other.
00:26:52.527 --> 00:26:54.904
>> How was that? Ups and downs?
00:26:54.904 --> 00:26:58.575
Yeah, you're all very quiet.
Come and find some shade.
00:27:03.830 --> 00:27:05.415
>> The last leg was really hard.
00:27:06.041 --> 00:27:07.959
>> That last leg was killer.
00:27:09.294 --> 00:27:11.296
>> I"m forming a little blister.
00:27:11.296 --> 00:27:13.423
>> Oh, it's sunburn
before frostbite.
00:27:13.423 --> 00:27:15.967
Frostbite can be
literally even worse.
00:27:15.967 --> 00:27:18.094
If I do like this
with my fingers now,
00:27:18.094 --> 00:27:19.971
it feels like
I have needles that ...
00:27:20.930 --> 00:27:22.474
doing that.
00:27:22.474 --> 00:27:25.393
Both thumbs and this
finger as well. Always.
00:27:25.393 --> 00:27:29.272
And I have it here as well.
Always hurts when I do this.
00:27:31.775 --> 00:27:33.360
>> Is anyone asleep yet?
00:27:35.862 --> 00:27:37.030
>> You know I had an experience
00:27:37.030 --> 00:27:40.033
talking to a woman
from Indonesia.
00:27:40.033 --> 00:27:42.952
It was quite common
in her country for husbands
00:27:42.952 --> 00:27:44.704
to take a second wife
eventually.
00:27:45.664 --> 00:27:47.248
I'm thinking, you know...
00:27:48.500 --> 00:27:51.336
If I was given that option
as an educated woman,
00:27:51.336 --> 00:27:53.088
"Do you want
to be the second wife?"
00:27:54.089 --> 00:27:56.758
I don't know, I'd find
that quiet hard I think.
00:27:56.758 --> 00:27:58.635
>> I've got a lot to say
about all of it.
00:27:59.135 --> 00:28:01.304
Muslims, correct me
if I'm wrong.
00:28:01.304 --> 00:28:04.557
My dad is married
to two women as well, okay?
00:28:04.557 --> 00:28:08.395
So I come from a family
where there's two moms.
00:28:08.395 --> 00:28:10.313
There has to be equality
between the wives ...
00:28:10.313 --> 00:28:10.980
>> Yeah.
00:28:10.980 --> 00:28:16.111
>> Financially.
>> Financially.
>> With every, with every aspect possible, so ...
00:28:16.111 --> 00:28:18.947
the size of the house,
the number of cars, the ...
00:28:18.947 --> 00:28:20.448
>> There's two cars?
00:28:20.448 --> 00:28:22.742
>> Yeah. If there's two house
if they're not sharing a house.
00:28:22.742 --> 00:28:25.787
So in my family,
my mom said I want to live
00:28:25.787 --> 00:28:28.039
in a joint family thing,
keep it one house.
00:28:28.039 --> 00:28:31.251
Because she knew that that woman
had four kids with my dad.
00:28:31.251 --> 00:28:33.795
And I'm just giving you this
as an example for you guys
00:28:33.795 --> 00:28:35.922
to realize
that there are such cases
00:28:35.922 --> 00:28:39.718
where women aren't forced
into accepting a second wife
00:28:39.718 --> 00:28:41.845
or forced into accepting
another woman.
00:28:41.845 --> 00:28:43.054
>> But it's a belief system.
00:28:43.054 --> 00:28:44.305
>> Yeah.
00:28:44.305 --> 00:28:46.725
>> If you genuinely believe
that this is okay,
00:28:46.725 --> 00:28:48.727
then you're going to do it
with an open heart.
00:28:48.727 --> 00:28:49.436
>> Yeah.
00:28:49.436 --> 00:28:52.230
>> Like, my grandmother is
one of four wives.
00:28:52.230 --> 00:28:54.858
And like you said,
they're ... they're sisters,
00:28:54.858 --> 00:28:57.485
and they're friends,
and they, they do everything together.
00:28:58.361 --> 00:28:59.988
Like when they're sick,
they take care of each other.
00:28:59.988 --> 00:29:03.366
And it just becomes
like an extended family.
00:29:03.366 --> 00:29:06.870
And once again, I personally
don't think I would do that.
00:29:07.537 --> 00:29:08.913
But it's a belief system.
00:29:08.913 --> 00:29:10.165
>> And if it works, it works.
00:29:10.165 --> 00:29:12.125
>> And if it works,
it works, you know.
00:29:12.125 --> 00:29:15.170
>> So is the opposite also possible that the wife chooses?
00:29:17.005 --> 00:29:18.590
>> Why are we laughing?
00:29:19.215 --> 00:29:21.092
>> No, no, but go on, yeah.
00:29:21.092 --> 00:29:24.220
>> What if a woman would be
the one choosing a husband
00:29:24.220 --> 00:29:27.474
and then in cooperation
00:29:27.474 --> 00:29:29.392
would this husband
choose the second one
00:29:29.392 --> 00:29:31.895
and the third one
and the fourth one?
00:29:31.895 --> 00:29:34.522
That to me would feel
like equality.
00:29:35.899 --> 00:29:40.487
>> Yeah. I mean, Islamically speaking,
no there isn't that ...
00:29:40.487 --> 00:29:43.573
>> Yeah, the mirror
version of that.
00:29:56.127 --> 00:29:57.796
>> Everyone here
is very passionate.
00:29:58.963 --> 00:30:00.548
There was friction.
00:30:01.174 --> 00:30:02.759
But it's better that we have
that friction now
00:30:02.759 --> 00:30:05.178
and work it through
than have that friction
00:30:05.178 --> 00:30:07.597
when we've only got
our 2-week window
00:30:07.597 --> 00:30:09.307
to make it to the North Pole.
00:30:15.021 --> 00:30:29.744
[ whispered praying ]
00:31:06.865 --> 00:31:08.658
>> I've got small and I've got ...
00:31:08.658 --> 00:31:10.660
>> That's good. Yeah, I like that.
00:31:10.660 --> 00:31:11.661
>> Okay.
>> Thank you.
00:31:11.661 --> 00:31:13.371
>> Get well soon.
>> Okay, assalamu alaikum.
00:31:13.371 --> 00:31:14.622
>> Okay, well you rest.
00:31:14.622 --> 00:31:17.208
>> Appreciate it.
>> You're welcome. Assalamu alaikum.
00:31:22.881 --> 00:31:23.548
>> Morning!
00:31:23.548 --> 00:31:25.049
>> Morning!
00:31:25.049 --> 00:31:29.596
There's the list of Muslim patients there,
and that's been updated today.
00:31:29.596 --> 00:31:30.221
>> Okay.
00:31:30.221 --> 00:31:32.348
>> And then there's also
the printout for you.
00:31:33.474 --> 00:31:36.019
So, Misba, how ready are you
for the North Pole?
00:31:36.019 --> 00:31:38.021
>> I've got about,
what, 4 days left?
00:31:38.021 --> 00:31:38.563
>> Oh, wow.
00:31:38.563 --> 00:31:41.983
>> I'm terrified. The North Pole
was in a distance,
00:31:41.983 --> 00:31:43.943
but now it's all of
a sudden it's come,
00:31:43.943 --> 00:31:45.403
my anxiety has kicked in.
00:31:46.613 --> 00:31:49.824
>> On Monday, apparently
my husband was telling me
00:31:49.824 --> 00:31:53.703
I was stood outside the bed
at 3 in the morning,
00:31:53.703 --> 00:31:56.664
and saying, "Am I there yet?"
I know.
00:31:57.832 --> 00:31:59.834
>> How are you going to know
what direction
00:31:59.834 --> 00:32:01.502
to pray at the North Pole?
00:32:01.502 --> 00:32:04.464
Don't the compasses
go bananas there or something?
00:32:05.256 --> 00:32:09.636
>> It will be the nearest Muslim
country to the North Pole.
00:32:10.470 --> 00:32:11.721
>> Right.
00:32:11.721 --> 00:32:15.058
>> Nearest Muslim country,
I don't know if that's Morocco.
00:32:15.683 --> 00:32:17.936
I don't know. You know what
I'm like with directions.
00:32:17.936 --> 00:32:19.270
I don't ...
I know the North is that way.
00:32:19.395 --> 00:32:21.314
>> You can’t even find your way to the wards sometimes!
00:32:21.314 --> 00:32:23.566
>> I know, I know,
I struggle with the wards.
00:32:23.566 --> 00:32:25.193
Forget about the North Pole.
00:32:31.074 --> 00:32:33.743
I'm thinking of putting the bars
in here
00:32:34.452 --> 00:32:37.038
and putting one sledge
on the top.
00:32:37.038 --> 00:32:40.124
>> Yeah because the bag,
this bag is big in size,
00:32:40.124 --> 00:32:41.417
so you want lightness of ...
00:32:41.417 --> 00:32:42.669
>> Yeah, yeah, I get it.
I get it.
00:32:42.669 --> 00:32:43.920
>> The big, big bulky stuff
00:32:43.920 --> 00:32:46.297
can go in this bag
because this bag is big in size.
00:32:46.297 --> 00:32:47.590
>> Okay.
00:32:47.590 --> 00:32:48.049
>> Yeah.
00:32:48.049 --> 00:32:50.927
>> I do all the packing when we go away on holiday.
00:32:52.095 --> 00:32:55.431
No it's ...
You need to put more stuff.
00:32:55.431 --> 00:32:59.143
Put all that stuff in there.
You go to the airport.
00:32:59.143 --> 00:33:02.188
What you do is juggle it,
put it in another bag, and ...
00:33:02.188 --> 00:33:04.065
[ Chatter ]
00:33:05.608 --> 00:33:07.485
[ intense music ]
00:33:17.412 --> 00:33:20.206
>> Looks like the fridge is colder than the freezer.
00:33:26.337 --> 00:33:29.007
>> Yeah, who is that?
Mr. Horsey.
00:33:35.763 --> 00:33:37.056
Hey, little boy.
00:34:23.853 --> 00:34:25.271
[ chatter ]
00:34:31.652 --> 00:34:33.071
>> I think we can afford
to be a little bit,
00:34:33.071 --> 00:34:35.573
have a little bit more
of those ones in here.
00:34:35.573 --> 00:34:37.658
>> I am opening Twix.
00:34:37.658 --> 00:34:39.327
It's a complicated job
I tell you.
00:34:40.328 --> 00:34:41.996
This is snacks
for during the day
00:34:41.996 --> 00:34:44.332
because we're not going
to be stopping to eat.
00:34:44.332 --> 00:34:46.834
Everything needs to be chopped
up into bite-size pieces,
00:34:46.834 --> 00:34:50.880
otherwise it freezes.
And it will be hard to bite it.
00:34:55.384 --> 00:34:57.011
>> So we are waiting
for a flight
00:34:57.011 --> 00:35:00.598
to take us from Longyearbyen
to a place known as Barneo,
00:35:01.182 --> 00:35:02.892
and it's a floating ice station
00:35:02.892 --> 00:35:04.852
somewhere around
89 degrees north,
00:35:04.852 --> 00:35:06.145
and when they go out there,
00:35:06.145 --> 00:35:08.231
they find somewhere
suitable in the sea ice
00:35:08.231 --> 00:35:10.566
that's thick enough
to build a runway,
00:35:10.566 --> 00:35:13.277
so that's when they can start
shipping people like us
00:35:13.277 --> 00:35:15.321
from Longyearbyen
to the ice station.
00:35:15.321 --> 00:35:18.866
It's an incredible story how
they set up this ice station.
00:35:18.866 --> 00:35:20.368
It's absolutely nuts.
00:35:20.368 --> 00:35:23.162
What's happening right now
is that there are helicopters
00:35:23.162 --> 00:35:25.456
flying from
the middle of Siberia,
00:35:25.456 --> 00:35:29.794
up over the sea ice, finding
a good place to put a runway,
00:35:30.753 --> 00:35:32.547
and when they think
they've found a good spot,
00:35:32.547 --> 00:35:36.467
they radio back to Russia,
and a plane is sent out,
00:35:36.467 --> 00:35:39.637
a big Antonov cargo plane
with all the tents
00:35:39.637 --> 00:35:42.765
and the accommodation and all
the other things that they need.
00:35:43.641 --> 00:35:45.560
They have to push everything out
the back of the plane
00:35:45.560 --> 00:35:47.812
because the plane
can't land on the sea ice.
00:35:47.812 --> 00:35:50.314
And they always
send two bulldozers
00:35:50.314 --> 00:35:53.317
and apparently the reason
is, they always used to send one,
00:35:53.317 --> 00:35:55.570
but one year they pushed
the bulldozers
00:35:55.570 --> 00:35:56.779
out the back of the plane
00:35:56.779 --> 00:35:58.114
and the bulldozer
just disappeared
00:35:58.114 --> 00:35:59.323
straight through the sea ice.
00:35:59.323 --> 00:36:02.410
So now they always send two
in case one disappears.
00:36:03.286 --> 00:36:06.497
And then the guys
have to clear a runway.
00:36:06.497 --> 00:36:08.749
So they've got a huge amount
of work to do,
00:36:08.749 --> 00:36:11.627
and the amount of risk
involved in any of that.
00:36:11.627 --> 00:36:14.213
You can imagine, any little part
of that goes wrong,
00:36:15.882 --> 00:36:18.634
they're very vulnerable
and exposed.
00:36:21.012 --> 00:36:22.597
>> What's in the red bag, Susan?
00:36:22.972 --> 00:36:25.975
>> In the red bag there’s a survival suit.
00:36:25.975 --> 00:36:30.313
>> that the Institut polaire français Paul-Émile Victor
>>Open it!
00:36:30.313 --> 00:36:33.608
>> lent us for the expedition
00:36:33.858 --> 00:36:40.031
We would use this if someone needs to try out
some ice that we’re not too sure about
00:36:40.489 --> 00:36:43.784
It’s a little bit heavy.
00:36:44.744 --> 00:36:46.454
[ laughter ]
00:36:52.043 --> 00:36:53.961
>> and, Susan I'm going to hand that to you.
00:36:54.378 --> 00:36:56.297
>> We need science and we’re taking
00:36:56.672 --> 00:36:58.591
the opportunity of us going to the North Pole
00:36:59.550 --> 00:37:02.470
to gather like new data, exciting data.
00:37:02.720 --> 00:37:04.388
>> Okay, you ready for this?
>> I'm ready.
00:37:04.388 --> 00:37:07.308
>> Relax just a little bit
for me. There you go, perfect.
00:37:08.184 --> 00:37:10.436
I’ve done that so many times on seals, so
00:37:10.436 --> 00:37:12.688
it’s only fair that
00:37:12.897 --> 00:37:14.190
>> Okay, I have another one here.
00:37:14.523 --> 00:37:15.816
it’s my turn.
00:37:15.942 --> 00:37:17.985
>> There’s two scientific studies happening.
00:37:17.985 --> 00:37:20.029
The one with psychology and the one with physiology.
00:37:22.114 --> 00:37:25.576
There’s really few studies in this kind of expedition.
00:37:26.494 --> 00:37:29.664
But the ones that have been done have been on men.
00:37:34.001 --> 00:37:36.254
>> Hello, they say
we can start or not?
00:37:36.254 --> 00:37:38.256
Or we wait a little bit, Rick?
00:37:38.256 --> 00:37:40.132
>> [Indistinct]
00:37:40.508 --> 00:37:43.135
>> Good evening everybody. It’s so nice to see again
00:37:43.386 --> 00:37:46.764
everybody here and first of all I’d like to apologize
00:37:47.014 --> 00:37:49.475
on behalf of the organizers for such a delay.
00:37:49.475 --> 00:37:52.311
What happened unfortunately on 12th of February,
00:37:52.603 --> 00:37:55.022
One of the helicopters of this company crashed
00:37:55.147 --> 00:37:56.899
and two people were killed.
00:37:57.024 --> 00:37:58.276
You know, sometimes it happens.
00:37:59.026 --> 00:38:02.571
Everything which happens in air sometimes fall.
00:38:02.738 --> 00:38:05.157
>> This helicopter company
had had two crashes
00:38:05.157 --> 00:38:06.867
within the space
of about 3 months
00:38:06.867 --> 00:38:08.869
and so their permit was revoked.
00:38:08.869 --> 00:38:11.205
>> Couldn't be managed in the right way,
00:38:11.789 --> 00:38:14.667
So we decided we have to delay the season.
00:38:15.293 --> 00:38:16.544
the first flight
00:38:16.544 --> 00:38:19.005
will be on the evening on 14th.
00:38:19.588 --> 00:38:22.049
So we have very short season. Ten days.
00:38:23.259 --> 00:38:25.303
>> What could go wrong now?
00:38:25.303 --> 00:38:28.055
Everything, being later
in the month
00:38:28.055 --> 00:38:31.225
will mean that the ice perhaps
is moving around more,
00:38:31.225 --> 00:38:35.771
perhaps breaking open more,
larger breaks, bigger,
00:38:36.605 --> 00:38:40.234
bigger pressure ridges.
It could mean anything.
00:38:40.234 --> 00:38:42.820
This is why the season never
lasts beyond the end of April
00:38:42.820 --> 00:38:45.948
is because the sea ice state
becomes too precarious
00:38:45.948 --> 00:38:47.575
that they can't stay out there.
00:38:47.575 --> 00:38:50.619
[ Chatter ]
00:38:50.619 --> 00:38:51.912
>> Do you also need small ones?
00:38:51.912 --> 00:38:53.205
>> Yes.
00:38:53.247 --> 00:38:54.540
>> In second half of April, actually,
00:38:54.540 --> 00:38:55.958
the weather is mild.
00:38:55.958 --> 00:38:58.085
In the beginning, it could be -30, -35.
00:38:58.377 --> 00:39:00.379
Now, -20, -25.
00:39:01.130 --> 00:39:02.465
For ice, it’s bad.
00:39:02.465 --> 00:39:03.883
Ice is getting weaker.
00:39:04.050 --> 00:39:05.134
But for you it’s better.
00:39:07.678 --> 00:39:08.971
>> We can all swim,
so that helps.
00:39:08.971 --> 00:39:10.222
>> No, no, don't swim.
00:39:10.222 --> 00:39:11.474
>> I'm only joking.
00:39:11.474 --> 00:39:12.725
>> Don't even joke.
>> I'm ...
00:39:12.725 --> 00:39:13.976
>> Thank you.
00:39:14.352 --> 00:39:16.187
>> It’s good I came over, especially for so many hugs.
00:39:16.354 --> 00:39:17.313
>> Ah great.
00:39:17.480 --> 00:39:19.231
>> Not for expeditions.
00:39:19.690 --> 00:39:20.983
Having 13 women!
00:39:21.067 --> 00:39:22.485
>> Yeah.
00:39:22.485 --> 00:39:25.237
>> Having these incredible nice looking ladies
00:39:25.237 --> 00:39:29.158
around is just good experience and then make people more happy.
00:39:32.203 --> 00:39:32.828
>> Exciting.
00:39:33.037 --> 00:39:35.956
>> Okay ladies have a good time, I leave in half an hour.
00:39:36.248 --> 00:39:36.832
>> Okay.
>> Thank you.
00:39:36.874 --> 00:39:38.084
>> I bring you something delicious.
00:39:38.084 --> 00:39:39.335
>> Thank you so much.
00:39:39.335 --> 00:39:43.923
[ Chatter ]
00:39:44.382 --> 00:39:47.009
>> I did a big expedition in 1995 across Arctic Ocean.
00:39:47.468 --> 00:39:50.096
We had the team with two women there.
00:39:50.304 --> 00:39:53.182
And they behave much better than men.
00:39:54.725 --> 00:39:55.309
Yeah.
00:39:59.021 --> 00:40:03.609
[ ominous music ]
00:40:08.697 --> 00:40:10.866
>> I live in Svalbard.
00:40:13.494 --> 00:40:16.705
We have now 3,000 polar bears
in this area.
00:40:18.374 --> 00:40:20.960
If something would happen
on the expedition,
00:40:20.960 --> 00:40:23.754
I'm the one
who would step in front
00:40:23.754 --> 00:40:26.507
and be between the bear
and my teammates.
00:40:30.344 --> 00:40:33.722
>> They are amazing animals,
amazing.
00:40:33.722 --> 00:40:36.225
>> They are where the seals are,
where the food is,
00:40:36.225 --> 00:40:39.061
and they are where
there's more broken ice.
00:40:39.061 --> 00:40:40.479
They are top of the food chain,
00:40:40.479 --> 00:40:43.149
and they know that they have
no enemies on land,
00:40:43.983 --> 00:40:46.485
and therefore
they are dangerous.
00:40:46.485 --> 00:40:49.613
So always try to look up
and around you.
00:40:49.613 --> 00:40:51.615
If you would then
see these black spots,
00:40:51.615 --> 00:40:55.119
the three ones that you always
look for, the three black spots.
00:40:55.119 --> 00:40:57.997
You see two eyes and one nose,
although if you see them
00:40:57.997 --> 00:41:03.544
then he also is quite close.
If he start coming closer,
00:41:03.544 --> 00:41:06.589
a flare gun would be
the first thing we would shoot.
00:41:06.589 --> 00:41:09.049
Then me and Felicity
who has rifles,
00:41:09.049 --> 00:41:10.718
if it would come to that,
00:41:10.718 --> 00:41:14.597
we have to shoot the polar bear,
then we shoot it to kill it.
00:41:14.597 --> 00:41:16.974
You don't shoot the polar bear
to injure it
00:41:16.974 --> 00:41:18.767
because he will now
suffer to death.
00:41:22.563 --> 00:41:25.774
For the North gate it
shouldn't be any polar bears
00:41:25.774 --> 00:41:28.819
but because climate change
the ice is breaking up,
00:41:28.819 --> 00:41:32.907
and polar bears are looking
for areas where might be seals
00:41:32.907 --> 00:41:34.992
or areas where they maybe
haven't been before
00:41:34.992 --> 00:41:37.286
and the ice being smaller
and smaller,
00:41:37.286 --> 00:41:39.497
these polar bears starts
getting higher and higher up
00:41:39.497 --> 00:41:41.332
which means
that it is a higher risk.
00:41:43.459 --> 00:41:47.296
We definitely have to be careful
and keep our eyes open.
00:42:05.606 --> 00:42:06.649
[ phone chimes ]
00:42:08.108 --> 00:42:09.610
>> Okay.
00:42:09.610 --> 00:42:12.112
We're on standby from
the airport from 11 o'clock.
00:42:13.155 --> 00:42:14.740
Does that sound good?
00:42:15.741 --> 00:42:17.952
>> Yes, it's good,
a bit excited,
00:42:17.952 --> 00:42:21.080
but it's too surreal.
00:42:23.040 --> 00:42:24.416
>> Well, you saw me today
at lunch.
00:42:24.416 --> 00:42:25.626
>> You were shaking.
00:42:25.626 --> 00:42:29.255
>> My hand was like this.
It's actually happening.
00:42:33.884 --> 00:42:36.095
It's not pulling a tire
in the park anymore.
00:42:39.223 --> 00:42:42.309
Today's temperature
in the North Pole is -29.
00:42:43.978 --> 00:42:45.312
>> Well it's good news for us.
00:42:45.312 --> 00:42:48.065
>> -29.
>> So that's colder.
00:42:48.065 --> 00:42:48.774
>> Yeah.
00:42:48.774 --> 00:42:50.943
>> That's good.
It's good news for the ice.
00:42:51.277 --> 00:42:52.528
[ laughter ]
00:42:53.320 --> 00:42:54.613
>> Next 10 days is going
to be a lot ...
00:42:54.613 --> 00:42:55.823
>> Going to be a lot of drama.
00:42:55.823 --> 00:42:58.033
>> ... drama, stress levels.
00:42:58.033 --> 00:43:00.494
>> Won't be an easy thing for me
if I don't make it.
00:43:01.537 --> 00:43:03.998
I tend to be very tough
on myself for...
00:43:03.998 --> 00:43:06.000
>> For not making it?
>> ... making mistakes.
00:43:06.000 --> 00:43:09.295
When I said finding out
about ourselves, for me,
00:43:10.087 --> 00:43:13.132
it would be dealing
with this failure.
00:43:14.633 --> 00:43:15.843
I'm not so good ...
00:43:15.843 --> 00:43:18.554
That's one of my weakest points,
dealing with failure.
00:43:21.724 --> 00:43:24.602
When you train and you work
so hard for something,
00:43:24.602 --> 00:43:26.604
and then you get there,
do you never get sad?
00:43:26.645 --> 00:43:27.354
No.
00:43:27.938 --> 00:43:29.481
>> Oh, okay,
then I'm the weirdo.
00:43:29.481 --> 00:43:31.400
>> You have actually trained for this!
00:43:31.400 --> 00:43:34.945
No it's just because, no it's
because okay, I've done it.
00:43:42.494 --> 00:43:48.125
[ excited music ]
00:43:59.219 --> 00:44:05.643
[ speaking Russian on headsets ]
00:44:24.662 --> 00:44:25.954
>> Yuri, that’s it.
00:44:27.039 --> 00:44:28.332
Closer.
00:44:28.582 --> 00:44:29.875
>> Where?
00:44:30.834 --> 00:44:32.127
>> Go ahead! Go ahead! Go ahead!
00:44:42.554 --> 00:44:44.264
>> This is pretty
fucking terrifying.
00:44:48.018 --> 00:44:50.646
>> Focus on a positive thought and breathe.
00:44:53.148 --> 00:44:55.776
>> She’s asthmatic and it’s cold.
00:45:04.243 --> 00:45:05.869
Be careful now.
00:45:05.869 --> 00:45:07.496
This is real time.
00:45:08.414 --> 00:45:10.999
Fingers, faces, toes.
00:45:10.999 --> 00:45:12.626
Check check check check check.
00:45:18.549 --> 00:45:19.800
>> Sorry?
00:45:19.800 --> 00:45:21.468
>> The bottle has got
fuel around it.
00:45:22.010 --> 00:45:34.815
[ speaking Russian over the radio ]
00:45:57.629 --> 00:46:03.844

00:46:24.448 --> 00:46:26.992
>> Guys! Hold onto your skis.
00:46:26.992 --> 00:46:30.287
They could fly away
when the helicopter goes.
00:47:04.780 --> 00:47:05.823
How are you all feeling?
00:47:06.657 --> 00:47:07.950
When I say how are you feeling,
00:47:07.950 --> 00:47:10.702
I mean having had
no sleep overnight.
00:47:12.246 --> 00:47:15.457
It would be great
if we could get a good day
00:47:15.457 --> 00:47:18.877
in even though we're all feeling
pretty tired and you know.
00:47:18.877 --> 00:47:20.462
>> All right. Let's give it a go.
00:47:30.055 --> 00:47:31.723
[ gasps for air ]
00:47:44.361 --> 00:47:46.029
>> Oh dear.
00:47:47.406 --> 00:47:49.283
>> Ah shit.
00:47:50.701 --> 00:47:52.286
>> Oh no.
00:47:54.872 --> 00:47:56.456
>> Oh my god.
00:48:02.296 --> 00:48:03.422
>> Ah shit.
00:48:05.674 --> 00:48:07.843
>> Careful your rope.
You'll step over it.
00:48:08.010 --> 00:48:09.469
>> Break time.
00:48:15.183 --> 00:48:18.312
[ praying ]
00:48:19.146 --> 00:48:21.815
>> Can everybody check each other’s faces?
00:48:21.815 --> 00:48:24.026
Make sure there’s no white bits.
00:48:24.026 --> 00:48:26.236
Any white bits is bad news.
00:48:31.241 --> 00:48:32.659
>> I struggled with everything.
00:48:32.659 --> 00:48:35.746
I'm struggling with my skis,
the cold.
00:48:36.955 --> 00:48:39.124
I struggled with the length
of skiing time.
00:48:40.125 --> 00:48:41.877
I just struggled
with everything.
00:48:43.754 --> 00:48:45.172
>> Oh!
00:48:52.220 --> 00:48:53.639
>> Go, go, go, go, go!
00:48:57.809 --> 00:48:59.436
>> We should camp here for the night.
00:49:00.145 --> 00:49:01.772
>> It's 9 o'clock? Wow.
00:49:14.785 --> 00:49:15.327
>> How was it?
00:49:15.327 --> 00:49:20.040
>> Super difficult.
I started early
00:49:20.040 --> 00:49:26.004
no sleep, not much food,
and it was just really tiring.
00:49:26.004 --> 00:49:28.298
My muscles ache,
my shoulder, my back.
00:49:41.728 --> 00:49:43.939
>> The situation in the arctic
is pretty alarming
00:49:43.939 --> 00:49:45.899
from a climate
change point of view.
00:49:48.443 --> 00:49:50.696
It's the stability of the ice
that's the problem.
00:49:53.407 --> 00:49:54.783
>> It's all right
if you get nervous now.
00:49:57.536 --> 00:49:59.579
>> There's less and
less multiyear ice around.
00:49:59.579 --> 00:50:01.707
So a lot of the ice
you're seeing will have formed
00:50:01.707 --> 00:50:05.002
that previous winter.
The really strong stuff
00:50:05.002 --> 00:50:07.671
is the stuff
that's survived several winters,
00:50:09.089 --> 00:50:11.883
and that's the stuff
that's really reducing.
00:50:13.343 --> 00:50:18.557
[ ice cracking ]
00:50:21.268 --> 00:50:23.311
>> You’re just walking on thin ice here.
00:50:24.187 --> 00:50:27.190
Any minute now it’s going to crack and open beneath you.
00:50:27.190 --> 00:50:30.986
which is such a dangerous environment.
00:50:34.322 --> 00:50:37.367
>> The fact that you could
hear the ice breaking,
00:50:38.076 --> 00:50:41.955
not cracking, breaking,
was really scary.
00:50:52.382 --> 00:50:55.552
>> If you played poker,
going all in, that was all in.
00:50:57.596 --> 00:51:00.015
>> It was scary.
Me and Anisa said our good-byes
00:51:00.015 --> 00:51:01.600
to each other
a couple of times
00:51:02.142 --> 00:51:04.728
and told each other that
if anything happens they'd tell
00:51:04.728 --> 00:51:06.605
our parents that we're okay,
and we love them very much.
00:51:06.605 --> 00:51:07.814
>> Yep.
00:51:07.814 --> 00:51:09.983
>> You really feel like you're
on top of the ocean,
00:51:09.983 --> 00:51:12.486
but when it's covered
with snow, you don't.
00:51:12.486 --> 00:51:14.279
So it's like it goes
back and forth.
00:51:14.905 --> 00:51:17.032
>> But we're really always
on top of the ocean,
00:51:17.032 --> 00:51:18.617
so there is no safety.
00:51:19.576 --> 00:51:21.870
>> I’ve written my will before I went here.
00:51:21.870 --> 00:51:23.121
>> You did?
00:51:23.163 --> 00:51:24.706
>> Yeah, my mom wanted me to.
00:51:24.706 --> 00:51:25.957
>> I said "Mom it's alright!"
00:51:26.166 --> 00:51:28.168
"Yeah, but I want you to.
00:51:28.168 --> 00:51:29.920
If anything happens to you,
you should have it."
00:51:29.920 --> 00:51:32.005
>> I think it's the battle
of the mind ...
00:51:32.005 --> 00:51:33.465
>> Yeah.
>> ... over
00:51:33.465 --> 00:51:35.050
actually where you are.
00:52:23.390 --> 00:52:34.276
[ camp stove hissing ]
00:52:47.414 --> 00:52:49.457
>> Good morning Nataša
00:52:49.583 --> 00:52:50.167
>> Yeah.
00:52:50.167 --> 00:52:53.295
>> It’s a kindly reminder that it’s spitting day today.
00:53:02.721 --> 00:53:04.973
Just a boring science reminder.
00:53:04.973 --> 00:53:05.807
It’s spitting day.
00:53:05.807 --> 00:53:07.893
So just before we set off
00:53:07.893 --> 00:53:09.978
if you can spit and then next stop, spit again
00:53:10.395 --> 00:53:11.938
and don’t forget to push your watches.
00:53:12.480 --> 00:53:13.899
Thank you so much.
00:53:15.442 --> 00:53:16.651
>> That's disgusting.
00:53:17.569 --> 00:53:19.821
>> How many kilometers have done this morning?
00:53:19.821 --> 00:53:21.031
>> Two and a half.
00:53:21.698 --> 00:53:22.741
>> But it was fast, no?
00:53:22.824 --> 00:53:24.576
Does the speed feel good to you?
00:53:26.453 --> 00:53:29.122
>> Who’s leading now? You leading?
00:53:29.206 --> 00:53:30.457
>> Yeah.
00:53:32.375 --> 00:53:33.919
Huh. Looks like we're back.
00:53:34.461 --> 00:53:36.004
>> I started my period.
00:53:36.171 --> 00:53:39.007
I shouldn’t have started because
I finished when I started to come here.
00:53:39.299 --> 00:53:42.135
>> You’re in such an extreme environment,
there’s nothing that’s normal.
00:53:43.136 --> 00:53:46.389
>> Unless I put too much stress on my body yesterday.
00:53:46.389 --> 00:53:50.810
>> Misba, there is nothing normal to what happens to your body in this environment.
00:53:51.061 --> 00:53:52.395
Absolutely nothing.
00:53:52.395 --> 00:53:55.148
Yeah but I had two good days. Really at the top of the world.
00:53:55.148 --> 00:53:59.110
>> Well, you’re gonna have a shit day at some point because you can’t always have fucking awesome days.
00:54:00.320 --> 00:54:01.279
>> Whoo!
00:54:01.738 --> 00:54:04.866
>> Just ... keep ... pushing.
00:54:08.495 --> 00:54:09.955
>> It keeps coming out.
00:54:12.123 --> 00:54:12.999
>> Come on.
00:54:13.875 --> 00:54:15.543
>> Your boot coming out of them?
00:54:15.543 --> 00:54:16.795
>> Yeah.
>> Mariam?
00:54:16.795 --> 00:54:18.004
>> Yeah?
00:54:18.004 --> 00:54:18.755
>> Don't worry.
00:54:18.755 --> 00:54:20.507
I know you, I know you’re panicking.
00:54:21.091 --> 00:54:23.885
>> No, no, no I just don't
want this to be an issue.
00:54:26.471 --> 00:54:29.224
Oh my god. It keeps coming out.
00:54:33.728 --> 00:54:37.899
At least i can say I’m the first sucker to walk to the North Pole.
00:54:38.024 --> 00:54:43.530
I think this is better,
yeah, oh god.
00:54:49.953 --> 00:54:51.413
>> Uh-oh.
00:54:55.500 --> 00:54:58.253
Shit I think my hands
are freezing.
00:54:59.421 --> 00:55:00.922
>> Mariam, go inside.
00:55:00.922 --> 00:55:02.215
We'll do the rest.
00:55:05.051 --> 00:55:06.344
Take care of your fingers.
00:55:09.055 --> 00:55:12.183
>> Mariam, are you alright? Your hands okay?
00:55:13.226 --> 00:55:14.602
>> Something is not right.
00:55:14.602 --> 00:55:14.936
>> Ooh.
00:55:15.770 --> 00:55:17.147
>> Doesn’t look good.
00:55:17.689 --> 00:55:19.065
>> OK, keep warm.
00:55:20.317 --> 00:55:22.944
>> Don't go to sleep
because it might be hypothermia,
00:55:23.528 --> 00:55:25.196
and you could die.
00:55:33.246 --> 00:55:35.874
>> This is Felicity from
the Euro-Arabian expedition.
00:55:36.791 --> 00:55:43.506
It's 8922.8. Thanks, Victor.
00:55:45.550 --> 00:55:47.844
>> Unfortunately, I got frostbite.
00:55:51.598 --> 00:55:54.642
It doesn't feel like
it's something like a big deal.
00:55:56.269 --> 00:55:58.063
In my mind,
I really want to continue
00:55:58.063 --> 00:56:00.231
but the fact of the matter
00:56:00.231 --> 00:56:01.983
is it's going to get worse
and worse,
00:56:01.983 --> 00:56:06.863
and I wouldn't be able
to hold things.
00:56:06.863 --> 00:56:10.575
I wouldn't be able
to help with ...
00:56:11.618 --> 00:56:13.953
I'd basically be
a useless tent mate.
00:56:15.163 --> 00:56:18.083
>> I mean, I, I feel very sad.
00:56:18.083 --> 00:56:19.501
>> Me too.
>> It's not fair.
00:56:20.126 --> 00:56:25.840
It's not fair but this is like ...
we had -38. I'm afraid.
00:56:26.633 --> 00:56:33.515
This experience
scared the shit out of me.
00:56:33.515 --> 00:56:36.810
You may do everything right,
it's just tiny little bit
00:56:36.810 --> 00:56:38.978
of things,
and you've been the best.
00:57:06.131 --> 00:57:10.093
>> I will work really, really hard to plant your flag.
00:57:17.434 --> 00:57:20.728
Keep positive. Keep positive. Okay?
00:57:22.021 --> 00:57:25.316
Don’t ever think anything negative.
00:57:31.072 --> 00:57:32.657
>> I'm just really sad.
00:57:33.241 --> 00:57:38.121
It's a brutal reminder that
we're in one of the harshest ...
00:57:38.121 --> 00:57:40.790
We are in the harshest
environment on the planet.
00:57:41.332 --> 00:57:44.085
It doesn't take much.
It really doesn't take much.
00:57:44.752 --> 00:57:46.337
>> Susan, can you do a face check?
00:57:50.592 --> 00:57:52.552
>> Of course, the thought
comes in your head,
00:57:52.552 --> 00:57:56.055
"Well, we're just like Mariam.
One of us could be next."
00:58:05.148 --> 00:58:08.943
>> My mind wants to keep going,
but my body can't keep going.
00:58:11.154 --> 00:58:12.947
I wanted to be there
with the team,
00:58:12.947 --> 00:58:15.074
and I wanted to make it there
with them,
00:58:15.742 --> 00:58:20.163
especially Nataša, my tent mate.
It was hard leaving her.
00:58:31.883 --> 00:58:34.052
>> The doctor said it’s kinda bad.
00:58:34.886 --> 00:58:36.804
This is quite dangerous.
00:58:37.430 --> 00:58:39.307
>> Now, I'm getting scared.
00:58:39.349 --> 00:58:42.060
>> He gives you special pain killers.
00:58:42.894 --> 00:58:44.187
>> Yeah, there is already bubbles.
00:58:44.187 --> 00:58:45.396
>> Already bubbles?
00:58:46.314 --> 00:58:48.149
>> It’s a bubble so it’ll be bigger.
00:58:49.859 --> 00:58:51.194
>> Bigger. Could be bigger.
00:58:51.653 --> 00:58:55.448
[ speaking Russian ]
00:58:55.949 --> 00:58:58.201
>> But now this pain is going
to get worse, right?
00:58:58.326 --> 00:58:59.577
>> Yeah probably, yes.
00:59:08.878 --> 00:59:11.464
>> Just keep going as quickly
and carefully as you can.
00:59:12.715 --> 00:59:13.967
>> Am I over?
>> Nope.
00:59:13.967 --> 00:59:15.260
>> Yeah, now you are.
00:59:15.260 --> 00:59:16.469
>> Okay, thank you.
00:59:16.469 --> 00:59:17.679
>> You good?
00:59:17.679 --> 00:59:19.889
>> We have to be careful
to all stick together.
00:59:23.142 --> 00:59:25.311
>> When I realized that Mariam
wasn't going to be able
00:59:25.311 --> 00:59:27.021
to continue,
I was mortified.
00:59:28.523 --> 00:59:31.276
I'm the one that's told them
that they can be out there,
00:59:31.276 --> 00:59:32.902
that they can do this.
00:59:33.861 --> 00:59:36.739
So that's going to make me ask
a lot of questions in the future
00:59:36.739 --> 00:59:38.783
about whether I was
a bit too confident.
00:59:40.243 --> 00:59:43.538
People often say, "Oh, would you
continue an expedition
00:59:43.538 --> 00:59:45.415
if there was
a death in the team?"
00:59:45.415 --> 00:59:49.127
I don't think you can predict
in advance what the emotion
00:59:49.127 --> 00:59:51.754
to something really catastrophic
like that would be.
00:59:55.383 --> 00:59:58.136
My biggest fear,
letting people down.
01:00:00.221 --> 01:00:01.472
>> I miss her.
01:00:01.472 --> 01:00:06.227
It just felt so odd today not
having her in amongst the group.
01:00:06.227 --> 01:00:09.647
So, yeah, I feel very odd.
01:00:10.231 --> 01:00:14.402
>> When I was starting to bitch
or be negative, "Nataša."
01:00:16.029 --> 01:00:19.949
>> Yeah, I think Mariam is
a very sort of soulful person
01:00:19.949 --> 01:00:22.827
in that she always sees
the soul of something,
01:00:22.827 --> 01:00:25.204
and that's quite lovely
to have around
01:00:25.204 --> 01:00:27.624
when you've got someone
who has that perspective.
01:00:32.795 --> 01:00:35.214
>> I promised my children that I would come home,
01:00:36.049 --> 01:00:39.927
If anybody leaves
the expedition being ill,
01:00:39.927 --> 01:00:41.346
that same flight, I was ...
I'd come ...
01:00:41.346 --> 01:00:42.555
>> You did?
>> I did, yeah.
01:00:42.555 --> 01:00:43.765
>> She was actually
standing here,
01:00:43.765 --> 01:00:45.767
and she was like, "I'm going
to go with Mariam on the plane."
01:00:45.767 --> 01:00:46.934
We're like, "What?"
01:00:46.934 --> 01:00:48.144
>> Because I promised.
01:00:48.186 --> 01:00:50.355
>> You also made me promise that I won’t let you leave.
01:00:50.938 --> 01:00:52.607
>> Yeah, so actually, yes.
01:00:52.607 --> 01:00:54.150
>> You did.
They better not find out.
01:00:54.150 --> 01:00:56.944
>> I know. They better not
find out that someone went home.
01:01:20.551 --> 01:01:24.138
>> On the edge.
I think you need to take there.
01:01:44.951 --> 01:01:46.452
All right.
Here is touching open water.
01:01:47.036 --> 01:01:48.037
>> Oh, no!
01:01:53.459 --> 01:01:55.002
This is open water.
01:01:57.088 --> 01:01:58.548
That's too big for us.
01:02:00.133 --> 01:02:01.801
And it looks like
there's more here.
01:02:01.801 --> 01:02:03.052
>> Yeah.
01:02:05.638 --> 01:02:07.473
>> I wonder if we follow it
this way ...
01:02:08.349 --> 01:02:10.393
It takes us out of our way, but
01:02:10.435 --> 01:02:12.019
I don’t think we can cross that.
01:02:12.687 --> 01:02:15.022
My gut feeling is
we should go right
01:02:15.022 --> 01:02:17.024
and see if we can
get round the big one.
01:02:18.776 --> 01:02:21.154
This is the first time
I've ever seen this.
01:02:21.154 --> 01:02:22.655
I guess we should be excited,
01:02:22.655 --> 01:02:24.615
but it feels a bit scary,
to be honest.
01:02:27.910 --> 01:02:30.037
I think we just have to
follow it for a bit
01:02:30.663 --> 01:02:32.290
because this is no good.
01:02:34.584 --> 01:02:37.170
>> This is also the place we need to start watching out for polar bears.
01:02:38.171 --> 01:02:39.130
More water.
01:02:39.922 --> 01:02:41.257
More likelier are the bears.
01:02:48.222 --> 01:02:49.807
>> That was a crack, yeah.
01:02:55.104 --> 01:02:56.689
>> There's water everywhere,
01:02:56.689 --> 01:03:00.651
frozen water which we hadn't
seen so much lately,
01:03:00.651 --> 01:03:03.988
looks like lots of little lake,
frozen lake everywhere
01:03:04.572 --> 01:03:08.659
and much more warmer.
It's really strange.
01:03:09.786 --> 01:03:12.121
>> Okay, what about ...
What's going on here?
01:03:18.336 --> 01:03:19.837
Wait there until
we're all with you.
01:03:19.837 --> 01:03:21.464
We'll get across really quick.
01:03:22.089 --> 01:03:24.050
Yes, so we need
to go quickly, guys.
01:03:24.050 --> 01:03:25.968
>> Go, go, go!
>> Are you all ready?
01:03:25.968 --> 01:03:27.220
>> Fucking hell.
01:03:27.220 --> 01:03:29.472
>> You don't know when
this stuff is going to move.
01:03:29.472 --> 01:03:32.433
If anything here moves,
we don't stand a chance.
01:03:34.477 --> 01:03:37.104
>> Get ready. Go, go, go, go.
01:03:45.154 --> 01:03:46.572
>> That's the first time
01:03:46.572 --> 01:03:48.449
I've ever had to take a team
across a lead,
01:03:48.449 --> 01:03:51.118
and you read about it.
You hear about it.
01:03:51.118 --> 01:03:54.497
People talk to you about it,
give you advice, but faced then
01:03:54.497 --> 01:03:56.791
with the responsibility
of choosing a place,
01:03:57.333 --> 01:03:59.544
where it's not going
to go whoosh, and it's ...
01:03:59.544 --> 01:04:00.837
No one is going to go in,
01:04:00.837 --> 01:04:06.300
and, yeah, but I had to
just look confident.
01:04:15.184 --> 01:04:16.936
If you hold this,
I'll go get the shovel.
01:04:18.688 --> 01:04:20.273
>> Anything I can do?
01:04:20.314 --> 01:04:21.524
>> Stomp on it. Ida!
01:04:21.524 --> 01:04:23.192
You need to move
a bit that side.
01:04:23.192 --> 01:04:24.735
It's not straight again.
01:04:24.735 --> 01:04:26.529
>> Sorry?
>> The tent has gone like this.
01:04:27.113 --> 01:04:29.323
>> It's funny. In our tent,
we've got the woman of the house
01:04:29.323 --> 01:04:31.909
and the man of the house.
So Ida and I are the men,
01:04:31.909 --> 01:04:34.954
and we do all the manly work,
so putting the tent up,
01:04:34.954 --> 01:04:36.956
supporting the tent
with snow around it.
01:04:38.416 --> 01:04:40.459
>> We call Misba Mama Misba.
01:04:40.459 --> 01:04:42.795
She's like the caretaker
of the family.
01:04:42.795 --> 01:04:44.964
She's the first one
into the tent.
01:04:44.964 --> 01:04:47.675
When we get in, the house
is nice and ready for us,
01:04:47.675 --> 01:04:49.385
and the water
is already boiling,
01:04:49.927 --> 01:04:51.512
and we can get warmed up.
01:04:52.305 --> 01:04:54.307
>> I didn't get an option
to do the outside
01:04:54.307 --> 01:04:56.267
because I was told
that I'm very mom-sy.
01:04:56.267 --> 01:04:58.144
I should go inside
doing the cooking.
01:05:03.816 --> 01:05:05.151
>> Anisa.
>> I'm sorry, Misba.
01:05:05.443 --> 01:05:09.155
Everyone’s coffee been thrown here. Have you thrown any coffee out front?
01:05:09.322 --> 01:05:10.489
I was here and I told you I’m going to throw it here,
01:05:10.656 --> 01:05:11.657
And you were like, “No, hygienic kitchen.
01:05:11.824 --> 01:05:12.992
You don’t put anything in my kitchen.”
01:05:13.075 --> 01:05:14.327
>> Guys, does it matter now?
01:05:14.327 --> 01:05:16.579
>> Yeah, she never throws her stuff out, I’ll throw it out for her.
01:05:18.414 --> 01:05:20.041
>> The hardest part for me
01:05:20.416 --> 01:05:21.792
not this, not the skiing.
01:05:22.251 --> 01:05:25.171
not the pulling our sledges, not the cold.
01:05:25.588 --> 01:05:26.756
It’s dealing with people.
01:05:27.048 --> 01:05:32.762
You’re cramped up in a tent with four people and you have to be civil.
01:05:33.846 --> 01:05:35.681
You have to not fight.
01:05:36.974 --> 01:05:39.185
You have to control yourself and not get stressed.
01:06:25.940 --> 01:06:32.071
We’re trying to take an aerial view of the landscape
so we can build a new runway.
01:06:32.780 --> 01:06:38.285
>> The magnetic field is crazy.
I'm fighting, fighting.
01:06:38.911 --> 01:06:41.664
It's going like this,
and I have to fight.
01:06:42.540 --> 01:06:45.292
As long as I can see the drone,
I can bring back.
01:06:45.292 --> 01:06:48.713
If I don't ...
See?
01:06:53.592 --> 01:06:54.719
Here ...
01:06:54.844 --> 01:06:56.929
That crack is here.
01:06:57.680 --> 01:07:01.100
No, it’s not this one. It’s a new one.
01:07:01.934 --> 01:07:04.395
Oleg Andreyich, let’s send the tractor.
01:07:04.645 --> 01:07:07.106
We can’t see what’s there, under the snow.
01:07:07.356 --> 01:07:08.733
Tell them I need the layout.
01:07:09.191 --> 01:07:15.740
The Barneo camp, the pilots and where the open water is.
01:07:15.781 --> 01:07:17.158
That’s what I need.
01:07:20.536 --> 01:07:26.459
[ anxious music ]
01:07:50.483 --> 01:07:52.109
>> It's your turn.
01:08:06.582 --> 01:08:08.834
>> I am doing the polar
bear watch
01:08:08.834 --> 01:08:11.629
which is basically the worst
part of this expedition
01:08:12.254 --> 01:08:15.424
because you have to get out
of your warm sleeping bags,
01:08:15.966 --> 01:08:17.259
and we do 1 hour,
01:08:17.259 --> 01:08:19.929
30 minutes intervals
between the tent teams,
01:08:20.638 --> 01:08:23.891
and you pace around, look around
for the three black dots
01:08:23.891 --> 01:08:26.268
and make sure you don't
see them in the horizon.
01:08:44.203 --> 01:08:45.788
>> Morning.
01:08:46.747 --> 01:08:48.582
You know we should have a chair for bear watch.
01:08:49.083 --> 01:08:49.917
A chair ...
01:08:49.917 --> 01:08:51.127
>> But ...
>> ... for bear watch.
01:08:51.127 --> 01:08:52.336
>> Yeah.
01:08:52.336 --> 01:08:55.464
>> I squat, but what about
everybody else? What do you do?
01:08:55.464 --> 01:08:56.841
>> No, see ...
>> What do you mean?
01:08:56.841 --> 01:08:58.259
>> Like this, I can
do this for ages.
01:08:58.259 --> 01:08:59.593
>> I walk about!
01:08:59.593 --> 01:09:00.803
>> Sorry?
01:09:00.803 --> 01:09:02.263
>> I walked about for an hour
and a half.
01:09:02.263 --> 01:09:03.681
>> I didn't see
that many footprints.
01:09:03.681 --> 01:09:04.932
>> Yes, you did.
>> No, I didn't.
01:09:04.932 --> 01:09:06.142
>> Well, then you weren't ...
01:09:06.142 --> 01:09:07.518
You were obviously
inside the tent.
01:09:07.518 --> 01:09:10.271
She spent most of her time
inside the tent.
01:09:10.980 --> 01:09:13.149
>> But last night
during my bear watch,
01:09:13.149 --> 01:09:16.193
I started listening
to a new audiobook,
01:09:16.193 --> 01:09:19.405
"Astrophysics For Those
In a Hurry," super cool,
01:09:20.739 --> 01:09:22.491
and just when I was up
there alone,
01:09:23.325 --> 01:09:25.244
and listening to how
the universe started
01:09:25.244 --> 01:09:28.414
and the atoms and the molecules
and Big Bang and all that.
01:09:28.414 --> 01:09:29.707
>> Yeah.
01:09:29.707 --> 01:09:31.333
>> Can't wait to get back to it.
01:09:41.051 --> 01:09:42.261
Move it slowly.
01:09:44.930 --> 01:09:46.765
So I want to go through there.
01:09:48.058 --> 01:09:51.020
Yeah. Are we ready?
01:09:52.229 --> 01:09:55.441
Come on. Let’s go into the madness.
01:09:59.528 --> 01:10:02.114
Does she know about heading slightly right to pole?
01:10:03.991 --> 01:10:05.201
Misba!
01:10:08.078 --> 01:10:10.289
What’s your marker? Where are you heading for?
01:10:10.581 --> 01:10:12.917
I’m heading to that iceberg. Is that ok?
01:10:13.334 --> 01:10:16.879
Well, north is like here and we were heading there.
01:10:17.254 --> 01:10:18.255
>> Okay.
01:10:19.089 --> 01:10:20.257
>> Okay.
01:10:29.183 --> 01:10:30.184
Oh!
01:10:32.019 --> 01:10:34.021
I’m gonna smash this!
01:10:39.151 --> 01:10:40.402
>> When you are leading,
01:10:40.402 --> 01:10:43.155
and you see the vast ice
in front of you,
01:10:43.155 --> 01:10:46.033
and you have to actually map
the routes out
01:10:46.033 --> 01:10:47.409
and everybody to follow,
01:10:47.409 --> 01:10:50.788
there's a huge responsibility,
absolutely huge.
01:10:50.788 --> 01:10:52.206
>> You can try this one.
01:10:52.581 --> 01:10:55.918
There’s a path in between. This one looks good.
01:10:56.293 --> 01:10:57.878
>> Yeah, looks good.
01:10:58.504 --> 01:11:00.839
>> I actually forget that I work
in an office,
01:11:00.839 --> 01:11:05.844
and I have a family.
I'm looking good. I feel good.
01:11:08.264 --> 01:11:08.889
[ singing ]
01:11:08.889 --> 01:11:11.684
Regrets
I have a few
01:11:12.101 --> 01:11:13.852
I went the wrong way
01:11:13.852 --> 01:11:17.815
Then again
I did it my way
01:11:21.360 --> 01:11:24.697
[ hopeful music ]
01:11:29.326 --> 01:11:30.911
>> That's it. That's it.
01:11:31.620 --> 01:11:34.832
>> Take it up, up, up, up.
>> Well-oiled machine!
01:11:36.875 --> 01:11:38.294
>> Nice.
01:11:38.294 --> 01:11:39.712
>> This way?
>> No.
01:11:39.712 --> 01:11:41.297
>> Oh, yeah, there you go.
01:11:43.215 --> 01:11:44.550
>> Four minutes.
01:11:44.550 --> 01:11:45.759
>> Woo-hoo!
01:11:45.759 --> 01:11:47.052
>> Well done.
01:11:47.052 --> 01:11:48.637
>> Love teamwork.
01:11:50.014 --> 01:11:51.473
>> We keep on having
these discussions,
01:11:51.473 --> 01:11:52.808
and we're skiing,
and I turn around.
01:11:52.808 --> 01:11:54.810
I'm like, "Are you okay?"
She goes, "Mm-hmm."
01:11:54.810 --> 01:11:56.312
And I continue,
and I was crying.
01:11:56.312 --> 01:11:57.938
She turns around.
"Are you okay?" "Mm-hmm."
01:11:57.938 --> 01:12:01.483
And I continue, and when we went
back into the tent,
01:12:01.483 --> 01:12:03.235
she looks at me,
and I was like,
01:12:03.235 --> 01:12:06.280
"Anisa, today was really,
really hard. I fell so much,
01:12:06.280 --> 01:12:09.366
and I just felt very, very weak,
and I kept on crying."
01:12:09.366 --> 01:12:11.618
And she goes,
"You were crying? Which leg?"
01:12:11.618 --> 01:12:13.287
I'm like, "The second leg."
01:12:13.287 --> 01:12:15.497
She goes, "I was crying on the
second leg and the third leg."
01:12:15.497 --> 01:12:17.082
I'm like, "Me, too."
01:12:25.049 --> 01:12:28.635
>> There's 19.44 nautical miles
to the North Pole girls!
01:12:32.931 --> 01:12:34.516
>> What's happening now?
01:12:34.516 --> 01:12:36.769
>> That's Olga and Felicity.
They're trying to find the ...
01:12:36.769 --> 01:12:38.604
>> A route.
>> ... a route for us.
01:12:39.229 --> 01:12:41.398
>> They're over there
just straight ahead.
01:12:41.857 --> 01:12:44.860
She’s like, climbing the little ice cube.
01:12:48.155 --> 01:12:49.782
>> Ay-ay-ay.
01:12:50.574 --> 01:12:52.701
>> What can you see, Felicity?
01:12:52.701 --> 01:12:54.411
>> Nothing that makes me
very happy.
01:12:56.330 --> 01:12:58.207
>> What was the view from there?
01:12:58.207 --> 01:12:59.792
>> There's no crossing that.
01:13:00.376 --> 01:13:02.920
We'd be in there for days
and days and days.
01:13:02.920 --> 01:13:05.798
Just really big blocks
with really big holes so ...
01:13:05.798 --> 01:13:07.049
>> Maybe we just ski ...
01:13:07.049 --> 01:13:08.300
>> Ski.
01:13:08.300 --> 01:13:09.760
>> ... a long way out
of our way, but come round.
01:13:09.760 --> 01:13:11.053
>> And then come around, yeah.
01:13:11.053 --> 01:13:13.430
>> Because if we go into this,
we're never coming out.
01:13:13.430 --> 01:13:15.432
We'll be in there
until next spring.
01:13:15.432 --> 01:13:21.230
So I think let's go out
and then just head south.
01:13:22.981 --> 01:13:24.691
>> I bloody well hope
this is right.
01:13:29.446 --> 01:13:30.739
What do you think?
01:13:30.823 --> 01:13:32.116
Seems much better.
01:13:32.324 --> 01:13:33.784
>> Yeah? Okay, let's do that.
01:13:34.410 --> 01:13:35.869
I think we shouldn’t go in there.
01:13:36.537 --> 01:13:38.789
We’ll take too long. We’ll be there all day.
01:13:39.081 --> 01:13:41.333
>> So we found a route,
and don't get me wrong.
01:13:41.333 --> 01:13:44.628
It looks horrible, but it is
slightly better than up there.
01:13:45.587 --> 01:13:48.424
So I think it's a good option
rather than keeping skiing
01:13:48.424 --> 01:13:50.509
and hoping we see
something better.
01:13:50.509 --> 01:13:52.469
We're going to have to
plunge in at some point.
01:13:52.469 --> 01:13:53.887
>> Plunge in, yeah.
01:14:03.021 --> 01:14:05.774
>> Right, and then Asma.
>> Should we go around though?
01:14:05.774 --> 01:14:08.152
>> Oh, you're coming down?
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
01:14:12.364 --> 01:14:13.282
>> Got it.
01:14:14.950 --> 01:14:18.996
>> Just a second. Hold on.
Hold on it. Just take one step.
01:14:20.080 --> 01:14:21.373
[ gasping, exerting ]
01:14:23.959 --> 01:14:25.502
>> One, two, three.
01:14:27.713 --> 01:14:29.006
>> Phew.
01:14:30.174 --> 01:14:31.758
Okay, we need
one more person here.
01:14:32.759 --> 01:14:34.428
One, two, go.
01:14:39.975 --> 01:14:41.643
Oh, shit, shit, shit.
01:14:42.811 --> 01:14:44.021
>> You all right?
01:14:44.021 --> 01:14:45.647
>> Shit.
Yeah, I just need a minute.
01:14:45.647 --> 01:14:46.899
>> Is your head all right?
01:14:46.899 --> 01:14:49.902
>> Yeah, yeah, it was my bum.
It's fine.
01:14:49.902 --> 01:14:51.487
>> Okay.
>> It just hurts.
01:14:53.197 --> 01:14:56.366
I am busting for a wee.
Will anyone be offended?
01:15:02.414 --> 01:15:04.124
>> We need a better system.
01:15:04.124 --> 01:15:05.959
Shall we make a human chain?
That would be easier.
01:15:05.959 --> 01:15:07.169
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:15:07.169 --> 01:15:08.921
>> Nataša, you stand down there.
01:15:09.880 --> 01:15:12.299
I'll stand here,
and you just pass it. Okay?
01:15:17.930 --> 01:15:20.182
And this is how
the chain works, people.
01:15:20.182 --> 01:15:21.767
>> And this is how it works.
01:15:22.768 --> 01:15:24.561
>> Quite literally a chain.
01:15:38.867 --> 01:15:41.245
>> It's very interesting
understanding,
01:15:41.245 --> 01:15:42.996
as each day goes by,
01:15:42.996 --> 01:15:45.415
these different women
and working with them.
01:15:49.169 --> 01:15:51.964
It hasn't been as bad
as I thought it would be.
01:15:51.964 --> 01:15:54.383
>> What are we doing here?
>> Actually, it's been great.
01:15:54.383 --> 01:15:56.093
>> Olga wasn't done
taking pictures.
01:15:57.553 --> 01:16:02.474
>> Lesson learned from this is,
people can be so much deeper
01:16:02.474 --> 01:16:04.226
than you would perceive
them to be.
01:16:06.019 --> 01:16:07.980
>> This must be
the most fun day so far.
01:16:08.647 --> 01:16:10.566
>> I hope tomorrow
is the same, yes.
01:16:11.567 --> 01:16:13.610
>> If I met Asma back home,
01:16:14.152 --> 01:16:15.696
I don't think I would have
fallen in love
01:16:15.696 --> 01:16:17.281
with her the way I have here.
01:16:17.864 --> 01:16:20.617
Asma, a princess from Qatar,
I thought,
01:16:20.617 --> 01:16:22.452
"Oh, no, that's not
going to work out."
01:16:22.452 --> 01:16:25.789
But strangely that's one of
the strongest bonds I've formed,
01:16:25.789 --> 01:16:28.625
and it feels like
it's a lifetime of knowing her.
01:16:28.709 --> 01:16:29.918
It feels...
01:16:30.794 --> 01:16:31.837
emotional.
01:16:32.337 --> 01:16:33.797
Yeah. It’s emotional.
01:16:33.797 --> 01:16:36.633
I was thinking yesterday, it’s like...
01:16:37.509 --> 01:16:39.970
what’s that called when a woman gives birth?
01:16:40.220 --> 01:16:41.513
Post ...
01:16:41.597 --> 01:16:43.849
Post-mortem depression.
01:16:44.308 --> 01:16:45.642
>> No. Mortem means death.
01:16:45.642 --> 01:16:46.310
>> Mortem Partem?
01:16:46.310 --> 01:16:48.478
No, you’re not post-mortem.
01:16:49.146 --> 01:16:50.564
>> Mortem?
01:16:50.647 --> 01:16:52.899
Anyway, after they give birth they get sad.
01:16:54.109 --> 01:16:57.571
So that’s how I feel.
Like I’ve been having this baby for two years.
01:16:58.071 --> 01:16:59.197
And now it’s going to come out.
01:16:59.197 --> 01:17:01.158
>>You’ve been pregnant for two years?
>>Yeah.
01:17:01.908 --> 01:17:03.035
Like an elephant.
01:17:16.923 --> 01:17:19.301
>> This environment is
so beautiful, magical.
01:17:22.554 --> 01:17:24.640
There's no words
that can describe this,
01:17:25.849 --> 01:17:27.267
the whiteness,
01:17:29.603 --> 01:17:31.021
and then the sky.
01:17:35.317 --> 01:17:38.236
>> I do feel like
I'm on a pilgrimage.
01:17:41.698 --> 01:17:43.575
My religious beliefs
are stronger
01:17:43.575 --> 01:17:45.160
when I'm away from home.
01:17:46.244 --> 01:17:48.872
You have all these things
in life
01:17:48.872 --> 01:17:51.291
that can take you away
from the spiritual world,
01:17:52.584 --> 01:17:55.671
but here you're stripped away
of everything.
01:17:55.671 --> 01:17:58.048
You're down to the basics
of life.
01:17:58.924 --> 01:18:01.343
It's really powerful.
01:18:10.769 --> 01:18:12.312
>> It's 11 kilometers away.
01:18:12.312 --> 01:18:15.023
So we may or may not
get there today,
01:18:15.023 --> 01:18:16.983
but there's a good chance
that we will.
01:18:16.983 --> 01:18:19.361
I think we'll find that we might
be chasing the North Pole
01:18:19.361 --> 01:18:21.613
a bit to stand on it,
and then we'll only be on it
01:18:21.613 --> 01:18:24.408
for a little while
before we're not on it again.
01:18:24.408 --> 01:18:27.244
>> Motivational speech,
"Braveheart" speech, come on.
01:18:27.244 --> 01:18:29.329
>> Do you need any motivation?
>> Yes, we do.
01:18:29.329 --> 01:18:31.206
>> We do.
>> Do you need any motivation?
01:18:31.206 --> 01:18:32.582
>> Yes, we do!
01:18:32.582 --> 01:18:35.544
>> I think you're all very
motivated with or without me.
01:18:36.086 --> 01:18:40.924
The plan is to set out
as normal, see what waits for us
01:18:40.924 --> 01:18:43.635
and maybe, by the end of today,
we're at the North Pole.
01:18:43.635 --> 01:18:45.011
>> Woo-hoo!
>> Woo!
01:18:45.011 --> 01:18:46.680
>> Ready for the North Pole?
01:18:46.680 --> 01:18:49.266
>> Woo! To the North Pole!
01:18:50.350 --> 01:18:53.895
I just hope we don’t hit a massive ridge
within 200 yards now...
01:18:53.895 --> 01:18:55.564
and deflate everybody.
01:18:56.523 --> 01:18:58.400
[ suspensful music building ]
01:19:02.112 --> 01:19:06.074
>> We are 3.14 nautical miles
from the North Pole.
01:19:13.749 --> 01:19:15.625
>> How far is it there, Misba?
01:19:15.625 --> 01:19:18.795
>> One thousand six hundred meters.
01:19:19.713 --> 01:19:23.592
Woo-hoo! We've come down
to meters, I've been told.
01:19:29.639 --> 01:19:31.266
>> We are so close yet so far.
01:19:34.853 --> 01:19:38.023
I wish someone could just run ahead
and plant a flag for us...
01:19:38.273 --> 01:19:40.025
and then we’d know where we’re aiming for.
01:19:40.442 --> 01:19:42.360
>> Five hundred meters.
01:19:42.360 --> 01:19:45.280
>> Mine says 464 meters.
01:19:45.280 --> 01:19:47.199
>> Four fifty-four,
we're getting ...
01:19:49.242 --> 01:19:50.744
>> Okay, come on, let's find it.
01:19:53.330 --> 01:19:55.582
Hundred and seventy-five meters.
01:19:56.583 --> 01:19:58.168
>> About to reach
the North Pole.
01:19:59.920 --> 01:20:01.588
I’m fifty in two weeks.
01:20:02.047 --> 01:20:03.215
>> Ah, it's good.
01:20:03.715 --> 01:20:05.425
>> It's a good birthday present,
isn't it?
01:20:05.425 --> 01:20:06.635
>> Fantastic birthday present.
01:20:06.635 --> 01:20:08.428
>> A hundred and sixty meters.
01:20:08.428 --> 01:20:10.555
Can’t top being at the North Pole at fifty.
01:20:13.892 --> 01:20:15.519
>> A hundred and fifty meters.
01:20:17.521 --> 01:20:19.439
>> Sixty meter, I made you a mark,
01:20:19.439 --> 01:20:21.066
so you can see, 60 meters.
01:20:23.401 --> 01:20:24.611
>> Fifty meters!
01:20:24.611 --> 01:20:26.321
>> Thirteen, 12.
01:20:26.321 --> 01:20:27.906
>> Twenty meters, girls!
01:20:29.533 --> 01:20:31.117
>> Eleven, 10.
01:20:33.328 --> 01:20:36.581
Five, four, three ...
01:20:36.581 --> 01:20:37.958
Don't fall, two!
01:20:38.875 --> 01:20:39.543
One!
01:20:41.586 --> 01:20:43.463
[ cheering ]
01:20:44.005 --> 01:20:45.465
I've lost it! I've lost it!
I've lost it!
01:20:45.465 --> 01:20:47.968
I've lost it. I've lost it.
Who's got it?
01:20:47.968 --> 01:20:51.137
>> Three.
>> Yeah, there ... or here.
01:20:51.137 --> 01:20:52.389
>> Two.
>> Where is it?
01:20:52.389 --> 01:20:53.974
>> Here.
>> Three?
01:20:54.599 --> 01:20:55.851
>> Right here.
>> No?
01:20:55.851 --> 01:20:57.519
>> No?
>> Okay.
01:20:57.519 --> 01:21:00.021
Here we go,
executive decision.
01:21:01.147 --> 01:21:02.315
That ...
01:21:02.858 --> 01:21:04.150
... is the north pole!
01:21:04.150 --> 01:21:05.902
[ loud cheering ]
01:21:11.616 --> 01:21:14.619
>> Woo!
[ Cheering ]
01:21:14.619 --> 01:21:16.121
>> From one Brit to another.
01:21:16.121 --> 01:21:17.706
>> We just shake hands, yeah?
01:21:17.706 --> 01:21:19.332
>> Yeah, we do.
01:21:20.333 --> 01:21:22.210
>> Congratulations.
>> Thank you very much.
01:21:23.003 --> 01:21:25.171
>> I'm just taking a picture
of my North Pole,
01:21:25.755 --> 01:21:28.091
even though everyone
has trampled all over it.
01:21:28.758 --> 01:21:32.053
>> Success is often seen
as planting your flag.
01:21:32.053 --> 01:21:33.305
This is my North Pole.
01:21:33.930 --> 01:21:35.891
>> Ninety, zero, zero, zero, zero.
01:21:35.891 --> 01:21:38.018
>> But I think skiing
to the North Pole
01:21:38.018 --> 01:21:39.895
is more than just
a physical journey.
01:21:40.478 --> 01:21:43.273
It's exploring
what's inside us which I think
01:21:43.273 --> 01:21:46.902
is just as important
as exploring our surroundings.
01:21:53.700 --> 01:21:55.619
>> I hadn't prayed for 10 years,
01:21:56.244 --> 01:21:58.038
and that was the first time
I prayed,
01:21:58.038 --> 01:22:01.207
and I just had this
really strong feeling,
01:22:02.959 --> 01:22:04.544
the feeling of new beginnings.
01:22:05.128 --> 01:22:06.755
>> Anisa, how are you feeling?
01:22:08.506 --> 01:22:11.259
>> At peace finally, yeah.
01:22:12.135 --> 01:22:14.512
>> Anisa. Come on.
01:22:19.601 --> 01:22:21.978
[ crying and laughing ]
01:22:31.655 --> 01:22:33.239
You have done so well.
01:22:33.949 --> 01:22:35.325
>> Thank you.
>> You have.
01:22:35.325 --> 01:22:36.910
>> You, too, baby.
01:22:38.954 --> 01:22:41.289
>> Yeah, finally.
01:22:44.793 --> 01:22:46.711
>> This is it?
01:22:46.711 --> 01:22:48.797
>> No. It's going to continue now.
01:22:48.797 --> 01:22:49.339
>> Yeah.
01:22:49.339 --> 01:22:50.924
>> This is not it.
This is the beginning.
01:22:50.924 --> 01:22:53.134
>> This is what all the
sacrifices were for. This is it.
01:22:53.134 --> 01:22:55.387
>> There's no ending.
This is no ending to anything.
01:22:55.387 --> 01:22:58.723
This is the beginning
of many things to come. Huh?
01:22:58.723 --> 01:23:00.100
>> Yeah.
01:23:00.100 --> 01:23:01.685
>> Yes.
01:23:15.073 --> 01:23:17.867
>> Hi, it's Felicity
from the Euro-Arabian team.
01:23:18.660 --> 01:23:23.123
Our position is ...
Yes, North Pole.
01:23:23.123 --> 01:23:27.085
At the moment, yes. Okay.
See you soon, Victor, bye.
01:23:34.926 --> 01:23:36.344
>> Ah, there's the purple jacket.
01:23:36.344 --> 01:23:38.179
Is that Mariam?
01:23:38.179 --> 01:23:39.389
>> That's Mariam!
01:23:40.473 --> 01:23:42.058
I think it's Mariam.
01:23:42.058 --> 01:23:43.018
>> It is.
01:23:43.143 --> 01:23:45.145
>> So glad that you're here!
01:23:46.438 --> 01:23:48.314
[ excited chatter ]
01:23:56.031 --> 01:23:57.198
>> It felt incomplete.
>> There was something missing
01:23:57.198 --> 01:23:59.367
>> There was something missing.
>> And it was Mariam.
01:23:59.659 --> 01:24:00.910
>> And it was Mariam. Yeah.
01:24:03.079 --> 01:24:04.706
So glad you’ve come.
01:24:06.624 --> 01:24:08.877
>> I'm so glad that your fingers
are getting better.
01:24:08.877 --> 01:24:10.211
>> I'm going to keep my fingers,
yeah.
01:24:10.211 --> 01:24:11.963
So that's good news.
01:24:11.963 --> 01:24:15.091
Yeah, the doctor said,
"No chop," so ...
01:24:15.091 --> 01:24:16.968
I swear!
Literally, he said, "No chop."
01:24:16.968 --> 01:24:18.178
>> Did he?
01:24:18.178 --> 01:24:19.804
>> I swear!
01:24:20.013 --> 01:24:23.058
[ bright, upbeat music ]
01:24:50.752 --> 01:24:53.797
[ transitions to somber music ]
