Fleeing their homeland, three Cuban baseball players arrive in Costa Rica to showcase their skills for pro scouts. But when one of them is cut by their ruthless agent and evicted from the apartment, the others must decide if they can still trust the agent or if they should take the dangerous migrant trail north to the United States. Told with rawness and urgency, THE LAST OUT tells the very human story of people caught between countries who want nothing more than to make a better life for their families. Set against the backdrop of the dangerous Central American migrant trail, the film offers a rare window into the dark side of professional sports.

Cuban baseball player,
00:01:54.656 --> 00:01:57.116
a childhood dream
to pitch in the U.S.
00:01:57.116 --> 00:01:58.868
is suddenly within reach.

00:04:18.549 --> 00:04:22.136
[muffled murmurs]
00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:36.442
[overlapping voices]

[laughs]
00:05:50.224 --> 00:05:53.227
[wind]
00:05:56.397 --> 00:05:59.776
[knife scrapes]
00:06:07.200 --> 00:06:09.786

[hums]
00:06:14.165 --> 00:06:15.917
[rooster crows]
00:06:35.937 --> 00:06:39.357
[playful music]
00:06:42.610 --> 00:06:44.070
[chuckles]
00:06:46.155 --> 00:06:48.991
[splash]
00:07:24.777 --> 00:07:27.780
[family members cheer]
00:07:29.615 --> 00:07:32.785
[family members laugh]
00:07:45.423 --> 00:07:47.175
(man) Happy.
00:08:00.271 --> 00:08:01.564
[bat cracks]
00:08:06.485 --> 00:08:07.778
[bat cracks]
00:08:10.239 --> 00:08:12.116
[distant clatter]
00:08:17.205 --> 00:08:20.208
[tire drags]
00:08:22.210 --> 00:08:25.213
[pensive music]
00:08:27.298 --> 00:08:30.301
[distant traffic]
00:08:37.850 --> 00:08:40.853
This guy going over my-
over my grass.
00:08:46.108 --> 00:08:47.109
I'm gonna tell him.
00:08:53.533 --> 00:08:54.659
[laughs]
00:08:57.078 --> 00:08:58.120
[mailbox squeaks]
00:08:59.038 --> 00:09:00.081
[keys jingle]
00:09:01.290 --> 00:09:02.124
Good boy.
00:09:02.375 --> 00:09:04.585
[pensive music]
00:09:11.592 --> 00:09:12.510
(Gus) Okey dokey, man.
00:09:18.557 --> 00:09:21.894
I've represented Cubans now
for twenty three years.
00:09:23.396 --> 00:09:24.522
During the nineties,
00:09:24.522 --> 00:09:26.774
the first ten Cubans who defected came to me.
00:09:26.983 --> 00:09:28.526
[dramatic opening music]
00:09:30.945 --> 00:09:31.988
(archival Gus)
For most of these guys,
00:09:31.988 --> 00:09:33.030
the whole thing about
00:09:33.281 --> 00:09:35.199
defecting is about
playing the Major Leagues.
00:09:35.199 --> 00:09:36.158
It's the dream, you know.
00:09:36.158 --> 00:09:37.827
You know, the Major Leagues
00:09:37.827 --> 00:09:39.161
is where
the best baseballers play in,
00:09:39.620 --> 00:09:40.830
and they just want to get there
00:09:40.830 --> 00:09:42.456
and see if they can play
that type of baseball.
00:09:42.790 --> 00:09:43.582
[bat cracks]
00:09:43.582 --> 00:09:45.960
(Gus) We represented close
to about sixty Cuban guys
00:09:45.960 --> 00:09:47.545
who defected through the years.
00:09:49.880 --> 00:09:52.591
The Cuban market right now
is about
00:09:53.134 --> 00:09:54.969
as good as
it's probably gonna get.
00:09:55.594 --> 00:09:57.805
And I just want to represent
my few guys and
00:09:58.180 --> 00:09:59.890
hopefully they make it
to the Major Leagues.
00:09:59.890 --> 00:10:01.726
I help them reach their dreams.
00:10:01.851 --> 00:10:03.811
Reservations. International.
00:10:04.186 --> 00:10:07.356
I'm trying to book a flight
from LAX to San Jose.
00:10:07.732 --> 00:10:08.691
Business class.
00:10:09.025 --> 00:10:10.401
No, San Jose, Costa Rica.
00:10:10.609 --> 00:10:13.612
[music fades]
[birds]
00:10:19.618 --> 00:10:21.537
[fabric rustles]
00:10:22.788 --> 00:10:24.081
[rooster crows]
00:10:24.081 --> 00:10:26.834
[driving music]
00:10:36.844 --> 00:10:38.054
[machete cracks]
00:10:38.054 --> 00:10:41.057
[men murmur]
00:10:43.392 --> 00:10:44.685
[ball thuds]
00:10:47.521 --> 00:10:48.481
[ball thuds]
00:11:19.720 --> 00:11:22.723
[birds]
00:11:45.746 --> 00:11:47.039
[ball thuds]
00:11:53.754 --> 00:11:56.757
[car rumbles]
00:12:09.770 --> 00:12:12.773
[music continues]
00:12:14.859 --> 00:12:16.152
[Happy murmurs]
00:12:24.118 --> 00:12:28.080
[cheerful music]
00:12:32.918 --> 00:12:33.961
[laughs]
00:12:33.961 --> 00:12:38.424
[sings playfully]
00:12:38.424 --> 00:12:42.428
[other players sing]
00:12:42.428 --> 00:12:44.054
[plastic crinkles]
00:12:44.597 --> 00:12:49.226
[players sing and clap]
00:12:49.226 --> 00:12:53.105
[cheers]
00:12:53.105 --> 00:12:57.234
[Baró cheers]
00:13:02.907 --> 00:13:05.910
[cheerful music continues]
00:13:14.251 --> 00:13:18.464
[laughter]
00:13:31.143 --> 00:13:34.146
[plane roars]
00:13:44.698 --> 00:13:46.283
[music builds]
00:13:46.283 --> 00:13:49.286
[crowd murmurs]
00:13:50.496 --> 00:13:53.499
[driving music]
00:14:15.854 --> 00:14:18.857
[music fades]
00:14:18.857 --> 00:14:21.860
[cheerful radio]
00:14:26.991 --> 00:14:29.618
[distant motorcycles]
[birds]
00:14:36.667 --> 00:14:39.670
[locker room murmurs]
00:14:58.397 --> 00:14:58.814
Okay?
00:14:58.814 --> 00:15:01.650
[players murmur]
00:15:04.194 --> 00:15:05.529
(Gus) I got it!
I just gotta line 'em up
00:15:05.529 --> 00:15:07.364
so I can introduce you
to each guy.
00:15:07.364 --> 00:15:09.074
So you guys know
who each guy is.
00:15:09.074 --> 00:15:10.117
We'll start from the right.
00:15:10.367 --> 00:15:12.161
This is Ray Oliveros.
00:15:12.870 --> 00:15:14.163
[ball thuds]
00:15:15.164 --> 00:15:17.082
This is Victor Baró.
00:15:19.501 --> 00:15:21.337
This is Carlos González.
00:15:22.546 --> 00:15:23.213
You guys ready?
00:15:23.505 --> 00:15:23.839
- Yeah!
00:15:24.632 --> 00:15:26.133
(Gus) First guy is Oliveros.
00:15:26.133 --> 00:15:28.677
[driving music]
00:15:29.637 --> 00:15:31.847
[sand crunches]
00:15:32.139 --> 00:15:33.307
6.566.
00:15:36.602 --> 00:15:37.895
[ball thuds]
00:15:40.397 --> 00:15:42.483
Okay, we've gotta go VP right now.
00:15:43.942 --> 00:15:46.945
[music continues]
00:15:47.655 --> 00:15:48.947
[bat cracks]
00:15:55.412 --> 00:15:56.705
[bat cracks]
00:16:11.095 --> 00:16:11.762
(Gus) The pitchers...
00:16:11.762 --> 00:16:13.180
they're gonna throw ten pitches,
00:16:13.180 --> 00:16:15.057
and I'll tell you which pitcher throws what.
00:16:20.062 --> 00:16:20.854
Fast-ball!
00:16:22.106 --> 00:16:23.399
[ball thuds]
00:16:26.944 --> 00:16:28.237
[ball thuds]
00:16:37.121 --> 00:16:38.414
[ball thuds]
00:16:38.706 --> 00:16:40.791
(Gus) González will
throw his ten now.
00:16:45.421 --> 00:16:46.463
[ball thuds]
00:16:52.136 --> 00:16:52.886
He sure is
00:16:53.387 --> 00:16:54.096
Ballsy fucker.
00:16:54.096 --> 00:16:55.055
- Yeah, he's, well...
00:16:55.055 --> 00:16:56.390
He's a ballsy fucker, yeah.
00:16:56.390 --> 00:16:58.267
- Yeah.
00:16:58.767 --> 00:17:04.356
[hopeful music]
00:17:16.118 --> 00:17:17.327
[bat cracks]
00:17:20.038 --> 00:17:20.414
(Gus) No.
00:17:20.581 --> 00:17:22.207
I'm gonna handle that
right after this,
00:17:22.207 --> 00:17:23.834
right after everybody sees him.
00:17:24.251 --> 00:17:24.835
You guys,
00:17:25.335 --> 00:17:27.379
you know, make sure,
we start talking,
00:17:27.379 --> 00:17:28.630
and then we go from there.
00:17:33.677 --> 00:17:36.180
Well, I have, I have a idea.
00:17:37.639 --> 00:17:38.098
Okay.
00:17:39.349 --> 00:17:39.808
Okay.
00:17:40.058 --> 00:17:41.894
I'll talk, I'll talk to you.
00:17:43.061 --> 00:17:43.604
No problem.
00:17:43.604 --> 00:17:45.731
- You're right.
00:17:45.731 --> 00:17:46.815
Right, absolutely.
00:17:48.817 --> 00:17:50.235
- Yep.
00:17:52.404 --> 00:17:53.363
Yep, yep.
00:17:55.449 --> 00:17:55.991
[ball thuds]
00:18:01.079 --> 00:18:02.915
(Gus) I think this is
a good group of guys.
00:18:03.165 --> 00:18:04.208
There's a couple guys here
00:18:04.208 --> 00:18:06.043
that could be
in the $20 million range.
00:18:06.126 --> 00:18:06.543
Good job!
00:18:08.003 --> 00:18:08.420
Good job!
00:18:08.712 --> 00:18:09.129
Good job!
00:18:09.338 --> 00:18:10.631
Every guy's gonna get signed.
00:18:11.965 --> 00:18:14.843
You know, we'll see where
they land and for how much.
00:18:17.763 --> 00:18:20.766
[players murmur]
00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:42.704
[distant laughter]
00:18:56.802 --> 00:18:58.637
[laughter]
00:19:09.815 --> 00:19:10.899
[claps]
00:19:24.454 --> 00:19:27.457
[party chatter]
00:19:27.457 --> 00:19:30.460
[laughter]
00:19:35.883 --> 00:19:37.134
Cheese!
00:19:37.134 --> 00:19:41.972
[muffled dance music]
00:19:41.972 --> 00:19:47.644
[motorcycle rumbles]
00:19:50.272 --> 00:19:54.776
[ominous hum]
00:19:56.361 --> 00:19:59.072
(Gus) In 2007,
I got arrested for
00:19:59.573 --> 00:20:03.243
supposedly participating
in a smuggling operation.
00:20:04.661 --> 00:20:06.455
(reporter) Sports agent,
Gustavo Dominguez,
00:20:06.455 --> 00:20:08.582
was sentenced
to five years in prison
00:20:08.582 --> 00:20:10.667
for smuggling
Cuban baseball players
00:20:10.667 --> 00:20:12.085
into the United States.
00:20:12.502 --> 00:20:15.172
Dominguez paid $225,000
00:20:15.172 --> 00:20:19.009
to a small time drug trafficker
to run five Cuban ball players.
00:20:19.635 --> 00:20:20.886
(Gus) I lost my house.
00:20:20.928 --> 00:20:22.429
I lost my name in the business,
00:20:22.763 --> 00:20:25.057
and I went to prison
for five years.
00:20:26.850 --> 00:20:28.060
We never did anything
00:20:28.185 --> 00:20:29.645
that was outside
the rules of baseball.
00:20:29.853 --> 00:20:31.271
Or outside the rules
00:20:31.605 --> 00:20:33.231
of the govern- U.S. laws.
00:20:35.359 --> 00:20:37.319
When I came back out,
I said, "look,"
00:20:37.653 --> 00:20:39.237
"I can start this thing again."
00:20:40.739 --> 00:20:42.157
I know it's gonna
be hard for me.
00:20:42.240 --> 00:20:43.784
In certain circles
in this business,
00:20:43.784 --> 00:20:45.661
my name is not
what it used to be.
00:20:46.828 --> 00:20:49.122
But a lot of the Cuban players
know who I am,
00:20:49.122 --> 00:20:50.707
and they're not going to
worry about what happened.
00:20:50.874 --> 00:20:51.291
Okay?
00:20:51.583 --> 00:20:53.961
Cause they look at me as
someone who can help them.
00:20:53.961 --> 00:20:55.754
[ominous music]
00:20:55.754 --> 00:20:57.923
[kettle spits]
00:21:00.550 --> 00:21:02.594
[liquid sloshes]
00:21:02.803 --> 00:21:05.806
[distant television]
00:21:24.950 --> 00:21:26.868
[laughter]
00:21:30.497 --> 00:21:32.416
[laughter]
00:21:39.631 --> 00:21:41.550
[laughter]
00:21:44.136 --> 00:21:47.139
[television murmurs]
00:21:52.686 --> 00:21:54.438
[dirt scrapes]
00:21:56.481 --> 00:21:57.733
[ball thuds]
00:21:59.359 --> 00:22:00.610
[ball thuds]
00:22:01.528 --> 00:22:02.237
[ball thuds]
00:22:08.035 --> 00:22:09.036
[ball thuds]
00:22:25.093 --> 00:22:26.470
(Roberto) God said to Baró,
00:22:26.595 --> 00:22:27.721
"I'm going to give you an arm."
00:22:28.221 --> 00:22:29.181
"I'm gonna give you an arm,
00:22:29.181 --> 00:22:31.141
and you're going to be
a pitcher in life."
00:22:31.433 --> 00:22:34.144
"Whatever you do with that
is up to you."
00:22:35.437 --> 00:22:38.815
The difference that I see
inbetween Baró and Carlitos...
00:22:40.317 --> 00:22:41.443
Baró's lazy.
00:22:41.860 --> 00:22:43.278
Baró doesn't want to train.
00:22:44.321 --> 00:22:45.489
You have to beg him.
00:22:46.365 --> 00:22:48.408
"You're gonna do
thirty pitches today."
00:22:48.658 --> 00:22:49.576
"I don't feel like it."
00:22:50.952 --> 00:22:53.080
Whereas, Carlitos will come
00:22:53.163 --> 00:22:55.248
and give you
a hundred and ten percent.
00:22:55.999 --> 00:22:59.336
[heavy breathing]
00:23:01.213 --> 00:23:03.131
There's plenty Carlitos.
00:23:03.131 --> 00:23:04.674
There's plenty Barós.
00:23:04.758 --> 00:23:05.926
I mean, everywhere.
00:23:07.761 --> 00:23:08.178
But...
00:23:09.221 --> 00:23:10.430
they look for
00:23:11.348 --> 00:23:12.599
the type of a kid
00:23:13.308 --> 00:23:15.394
that people will
fall in love with.
00:23:16.019 --> 00:23:17.896
That hero.
00:23:18.188 --> 00:23:19.439
He's short for a pitcher,
00:23:19.564 --> 00:23:21.608
but for a short guy to throw 95,
00:23:21.650 --> 00:23:22.567
that would be a story.
00:23:22.567 --> 00:23:24.361
That would be any kid's dream.
00:23:31.451 --> 00:23:33.745
[yells]
00:23:33.745 --> 00:23:35.122
Tonight in the party!
00:23:35.122 --> 00:23:37.040
[mimics party bass]
00:23:39.251 --> 00:23:40.710
[laughter
00:23:40.710 --> 00:23:42.212
[mimics party beat]
00:23:42.212 --> 00:23:48.885
[thunder]
00:23:48.885 --> 00:23:53.431
[driving rain]
00:24:01.648 --> 00:24:04.651
[distant traffic]
00:24:11.199 --> 00:24:12.117
I understand that
00:24:12.868 --> 00:24:15.495
pretty, pretty quick that
everything should be settled.
00:24:17.581 --> 00:24:19.541
That's pretty much our office
00:24:19.541 --> 00:24:20.959
who does all that,
you know, then.
00:24:21.168 --> 00:24:23.587
They've got lawyers and stuff
taking care of all this stuff.
00:24:25.255 --> 00:24:26.298
[ball thuds]
00:24:30.719 --> 00:24:32.095
[hits glove]
00:25:17.807 --> 00:25:20.810
[dogs bark]
00:25:44.960 --> 00:25:47.963
[distant traffic]
00:25:49.089 --> 00:25:52.092
[birds]
00:26:28.044 --> 00:26:32.424
[energetic dance song]
00:26:32.424 --> 00:26:37.512
[pounding music]
00:26:51.901 --> 00:26:53.320
[carhorns]
00:26:57.115 --> 00:26:58.366
[bat cracks]
00:26:58.366 --> 00:27:00.952
[Carlos mimics reporter]
00:27:04.914 --> 00:27:05.790
[claps]
00:27:05.790 --> 00:27:08.793
[music continues]
00:27:09.419 --> 00:27:11.212
[chatter]
[claps]
00:27:18.386 --> 00:27:20.889
[silence]
00:27:32.484 --> 00:27:34.778
[locker room chatter]
00:27:43.703 --> 00:27:44.954
[chains rattle]
00:27:44.954 --> 00:27:47.957
[ominous music builds]
00:27:52.670 --> 00:27:53.713
[ball thuds]
00:27:56.716 --> 00:27:57.842
[bat cracks]
00:29:04.200 --> 00:29:05.452
[laughs]
00:29:10.457 --> 00:29:13.168
[ominous music continues]
00:29:14.169 --> 00:29:17.172
[distant traffic]
00:29:19.799 --> 00:29:31.436
[pole thuds]
00:29:45.909 --> 00:29:48.912
[music fades]
00:29:55.585 --> 00:29:57.921
[dirt crunches]
00:29:57.921 --> 00:29:59.172
[grunts]
00:30:23.780 --> 00:30:26.783
[driving music]
00:30:35.750 --> 00:30:38.753
[players murmur]
00:30:39.295 --> 00:30:40.547
[sighs]
00:30:46.469 --> 00:30:47.512
[bat cracks]
00:30:51.182 --> 00:30:52.225
[bat cracks]
00:30:56.312 --> 00:30:57.355
[bat cracks]
00:31:09.826 --> 00:31:12.829
[driving music intensifies]
00:31:17.584 --> 00:31:18.626
[ball thuds]
00:31:23.881 --> 00:31:24.716
[ball thuds]
00:31:26.384 --> 00:31:27.427
[claps]
00:31:34.767 --> 00:31:36.019
Yes!
00:31:56.748 --> 00:31:59.751
[music calms]
00:32:03.921 --> 00:32:05.840
[bag rustles]
00:32:07.258 --> 00:32:08.301
[zippers]
00:32:09.719 --> 00:32:11.596
(Gus) A couple guys are okay.
00:32:11.596 --> 00:32:13.348
The other guys are
a little off, so
00:32:13.973 --> 00:32:15.183
this is a wake-up call.
00:32:16.017 --> 00:32:18.353
We talk to each individual about
things we're gonna change
00:32:18.353 --> 00:32:19.562
We're gonna change
some things now.
00:32:19.729 --> 00:32:20.813
Uh, we'll see.
00:32:20.938 --> 00:32:22.982
We'll see, I think that
it's gonna be for the good.
00:32:23.566 --> 00:32:25.526
And we'll see how
they come back from this.
00:32:25.526 --> 00:32:30.698
[television in Spanish]
00:32:31.908 --> 00:32:35.286
[bouncy party music]
00:32:35.286 --> 00:32:38.289
[players chatter]
00:32:52.470 --> 00:32:55.473
[sinister music builds]
00:33:11.572 --> 00:33:14.575
[traffic]
00:33:24.043 --> 00:33:26.546
[music fades]
00:33:39.100 --> 00:33:42.103
[traffic]
00:33:51.195 --> 00:33:54.198
[bus rumbles]
00:34:04.125 --> 00:34:05.334
[truck rumbles]
00:34:15.553 --> 00:34:18.556
[melancholic music]
00:34:27.440 --> 00:34:29.567
[trucks rumble]
00:35:14.487 --> 00:35:18.407
[bus rumbles]
00:35:29.877 --> 00:35:32.880
[distant birds]
00:35:36.259 --> 00:35:37.301
[phone dings]
00:35:44.058 --> 00:35:45.101
[bag thuds]
00:35:53.818 --> 00:35:56.571
[barbell clinks]
[radio]
00:36:09.876 --> 00:36:14.881
[towel thuds]
00:36:24.307 --> 00:36:25.349
[ball thuds]
[speedometer beeps]
00:36:30.021 --> 00:36:31.439
(Roly) They look
real, real good.
00:36:32.398 --> 00:36:34.150
Signing press, that's good.
00:36:35.401 --> 00:36:37.862
So hopefully
they can get to sign
00:36:38.529 --> 00:36:39.614
the Major Leagues.
00:37:11.479 --> 00:37:12.521
[ball thuds]
00:37:19.320 --> 00:37:20.363
[ball thuds]
00:37:23.616 --> 00:37:24.659
[ball thuds]
00:37:25.952 --> 00:37:26.994
[ball thuds]
00:37:29.121 --> 00:37:33.793
[motorcycle rumbles]
00:37:37.380 --> 00:37:39.924
[voice from phone]
00:37:39.924 --> 00:37:40.675
[chuckles]
00:37:51.352 --> 00:37:53.145
[laughs]
00:37:54.146 --> 00:37:57.149
[pensive music]
00:37:59.443 --> 00:38:00.486
[camera flash]
00:39:20.733 --> 00:39:23.736
[music fades]
00:39:26.947 --> 00:39:27.990
[door clatters]
00:39:41.837 --> 00:39:44.840
[television chatter]
00:40:18.082 --> 00:40:21.085
[people murmur]
00:40:29.969 --> 00:40:35.015
[bouncy radio song]
00:40:47.987 --> 00:40:51.073
[bills scrape]
00:41:08.591 --> 00:41:11.594
[somber music builds]
00:41:15.806 --> 00:41:18.809
[marimba]
00:41:26.650 --> 00:41:29.653
[marimba fades
into somber music]
00:41:35.826 --> 00:41:40.539
[distant children chatter]
00:41:45.002 --> 00:41:48.005
[music turns sinister]
00:42:10.653 --> 00:42:11.445
(Roberto) Charlie!
00:42:37.638 --> 00:42:38.055
Okay.
00:42:40.224 --> 00:42:41.684
(Roberto)
So I'm a little concerned
00:42:41.892 --> 00:42:44.395
as to his whereabouts.
What is he doing?
00:42:45.020 --> 00:42:45.980
And also,
00:42:46.188 --> 00:42:48.148
he's not practicing
like he used to.
00:42:48.732 --> 00:42:52.444
So I'm hoping this week
he'll get back on track and
00:42:53.529 --> 00:42:55.572
you know, work as hard
as he used to work.
00:42:57.116 --> 00:42:59.451
Having the tryout on Wednesday,
00:42:59.827 --> 00:43:02.705
he's trying to do what
he didn't do last week
00:43:02.871 --> 00:43:05.457
in one day, and it doesn't
work like that.
00:43:05.708 --> 00:43:07.376
Hopefully he'll hit good speed,
00:43:07.376 --> 00:43:09.670
and with his curveball,
he'll be alright.
00:43:10.754 --> 00:43:13.465
If not, I think he's in trouble.
00:43:14.717 --> 00:43:17.720
[distant birds]
00:43:18.178 --> 00:43:19.221
[man exclaims]
00:43:20.139 --> 00:43:23.475
[whip cracks]
[water splashes]
00:43:45.039 --> 00:43:47.207
[distant birds]
00:43:48.584 --> 00:43:50.919
[photos rustle]
00:44:22.618 --> 00:44:26.830
[somber music]
[rooster crows]
00:44:40.969 --> 00:44:43.972
[coaches murmur]
00:44:55.401 --> 00:44:59.488
[somber music continues]
00:45:00.864 --> 00:45:02.282
[Villalón speaks]
00:45:32.187 --> 00:45:35.190
[music continues]
[motorcycles rumble]
00:45:42.239 --> 00:45:44.324
(Gus) Unfortunately the guys
have not been able to sign.
00:45:44.867 --> 00:45:46.493
And I wanted to sign them, but
00:45:47.119 --> 00:45:50.914
None of the teams have put
any offers for any of the guys.
00:45:51.039 --> 00:45:52.958
Maybe what they think
00:45:53.083 --> 00:45:54.460
it's a lie.
00:45:54.668 --> 00:45:57.337
We've been telling them,
"This is what's gonna happen",
00:45:57.713 --> 00:45:59.089
the ultimate goal being signed
00:45:59.089 --> 00:46:00.632
by a Major League organization,
00:46:00.799 --> 00:46:02.759
and they haven't signed,
and maybe
00:46:02.759 --> 00:46:04.428
they look at that
and say, "Well,"
00:46:04.678 --> 00:46:07.264
"these guys have been lying
to us the whole time."
00:46:07.389 --> 00:46:09.600
And we never lied to them.
00:46:09.766 --> 00:46:11.602
We've always wanted
to sign them.
00:46:11.602 --> 00:46:14.188
We wanted to sign them
to the best deals possible.
00:46:14.605 --> 00:46:17.149
I could have signed
each one of these guys for
00:46:17.232 --> 00:46:19.443
you know,
a hundred thousand dollars.
00:46:19.860 --> 00:46:21.862
That's not what
we were there for.
00:46:22.446 --> 00:46:23.280
You know?
00:46:23.822 --> 00:46:25.908
I make investments
00:46:26.116 --> 00:46:28.827
in this company
because it is a business.
00:46:29.203 --> 00:46:31.163
I'm there to sign
a baseball player
00:46:31.330 --> 00:46:33.123
for what I believe he's worth.
00:46:38.003 --> 00:46:42.591
[truck rumbles]
00:46:49.556 --> 00:46:50.849
[police sirens]
00:46:50.849 --> 00:46:53.852
[truck idles]
00:46:57.648 --> 00:46:58.690
[door thuds]
00:46:59.608 --> 00:47:02.611
[people murmur]
00:47:02.611 --> 00:47:05.614
[sinister music builds]
00:47:06.782 --> 00:47:08.992
[carhorns]
00:47:13.580 --> 00:47:16.583
[driving beat]
00:47:36.103 --> 00:47:39.106
[sinister music continues]
00:48:35.662 --> 00:48:39.791
[music calms and fades]
00:48:39.791 --> 00:48:42.794
[birds]
00:48:47.424 --> 00:48:51.595
[distant music]
00:49:04.066 --> 00:49:10.489
[distant television]
[baby coos]
00:49:44.856 --> 00:49:47.859
[quiet television]
00:49:47.984 --> 00:49:54.116
[cars rumble]
00:50:14.344 --> 00:50:17.347
[passengers murmur]
00:50:37.617 --> 00:50:40.620
[baby cries]
00:50:49.671 --> 00:50:53.133
[bus hisses]
00:50:53.133 --> 00:50:56.136
[crowd murmurs]
00:51:35.342 --> 00:51:41.598
[somber music]
00:51:59.449 --> 00:52:03.662
[dirt scrapes]
00:52:20.929 --> 00:52:23.056
(Roberto) Today we have
a private workout.
00:52:23.557 --> 00:52:26.226
They showed a lot of interest
on three of our guys.
00:52:26.643 --> 00:52:30.313
So hopefully, they'll take
one of these guys with them.
00:52:33.066 --> 00:52:34.109
[ball thuds]
00:52:41.408 --> 00:52:42.450
[ball thuds]
00:52:48.456 --> 00:52:49.499
[ball thuds]
00:52:53.753 --> 00:52:54.796
[ball thuds]
00:53:05.223 --> 00:53:06.266
[chain rattles]
00:53:13.023 --> 00:53:14.065
[ball thuds]
00:53:19.571 --> 00:53:21.781
(scout) Uh, I came to see Baró.
00:53:22.032 --> 00:53:23.366
He's been here for a year.
00:53:23.366 --> 00:53:25.744
You know,
he has his free agency.
00:53:26.202 --> 00:53:28.830
And, now, you know,
he's ready to pitch.
00:53:28.997 --> 00:53:32.208
(interviewer) And did
he live up to the hype?
00:53:32.751 --> 00:53:34.461
Yes, he threw hard today.
00:53:34.794 --> 00:53:35.921
He was good.
00:53:37.631 --> 00:53:38.673
[men murmur]
00:54:50.203 --> 00:54:53.206
[ominous music]
00:55:30.368 --> 00:55:33.371
[music fades]
[crickets]
00:55:40.503 --> 00:55:42.213
[murmur]
00:55:55.977 --> 00:55:58.980
[laughter]
00:56:05.153 --> 00:56:06.613
[baby coos]
00:56:22.754 --> 00:56:23.922
[knocks]
00:56:27.467 --> 00:56:28.510
[panel clicks]
00:56:55.662 --> 00:56:56.830
[door thuds]
00:56:58.790 --> 00:57:00.458
[silence]
00:57:14.264 --> 00:57:17.267
[crickets]
00:57:23.481 --> 00:57:25.233
[baby fusses]
00:57:25.233 --> 00:57:29.821
[motorcycle rumbles]
00:57:47.046 --> 00:57:50.049
[motorcycle idles]
00:57:55.180 --> 00:57:58.183
[boat creaks]
[murmurs]
00:58:07.984 --> 00:58:09.611
[people murmur]
00:58:09.611 --> 00:58:12.614
[boat squeaks]
00:58:17.285 --> 00:58:19.037
[baby fusses]
00:58:21.956 --> 00:58:24.959
[boat creaks]
00:58:28.713 --> 00:58:31.007
[baby fusses]
00:59:07.794 --> 00:59:10.797
[ominous music]
00:59:43.705 --> 00:59:46.708
[footsteps]
00:59:50.628 --> 00:59:53.631
[music continues]
01:00:06.769 --> 01:00:09.772
[carhorns]
01:00:10.398 --> 01:00:12.150
[man coughs]
[door thuds]
01:00:18.156 --> 01:00:19.782
[people murmur]
01:00:23.661 --> 01:00:27.623
[music continues]
01:00:31.377 --> 01:00:34.380
[people murmur]
01:00:34.964 --> 01:00:37.967
[car rumbles]
01:00:45.516 --> 01:00:48.519
[whistles]
01:00:48.519 --> 01:00:51.522
[people murmur]
01:00:54.275 --> 01:00:56.861
[whistles]
01:00:56.861 --> 01:01:01.240
[razor whirs]
01:01:02.825 --> 01:01:05.828
[bouncy radio music]
01:01:24.555 --> 01:01:26.432
[distant traffic]
01:01:26.766 --> 01:01:29.769
[children murmur]
01:02:04.387 --> 01:02:07.390
[traffic rumbles]
01:02:22.697 --> 01:02:24.115
[pot bubbles]
01:03:13.956 --> 01:03:16.292
[fabric rustles]
01:03:16.834 --> 01:03:19.837
[cork squeaks]
[bouncy radio music]
01:03:21.756 --> 01:03:23.341
[pops]
01:03:48.699 --> 01:03:52.703
[hopeful music]
01:04:05.967 --> 01:04:08.970
[music turns sinister]
01:04:35.496 --> 01:04:40.876
[driving music]
01:05:02.607 --> 01:05:07.403
[footsteps]
01:05:07.403 --> 01:05:10.406
[music continues]
01:05:34.430 --> 01:05:37.433
[music fades]
[birds]
01:05:41.312 --> 01:05:44.315
[traffic]
01:05:49.445 --> 01:05:52.448
[pensive music]
01:06:21.394 --> 01:06:24.397
[muffled party music]
01:06:24.397 --> 01:06:27.233
[people chatter]
01:07:37.219 --> 01:07:40.181
[muffled music]
01:07:44.226 --> 01:07:50.983
[hopeful music]
01:08:04.205 --> 01:08:10.753
[muffled television music]
01:08:21.138 --> 01:08:24.141
[vendor continues to talk]
01:08:46.413 --> 01:08:49.416
[hopeful music continues]
01:08:59.510 --> 01:09:02.805
[music fades]
[wind]
01:09:17.111 --> 01:09:20.114
[equipment creaks]
01:09:38.173 --> 01:09:41.176
[barbell creaks]
01:09:41.176 --> 01:09:43.220
[thuds]
01:09:43.220 --> 01:09:46.223
[men murmur]
01:10:27.097 --> 01:10:30.100
[traffic]
01:10:32.686 --> 01:10:36.231
[car rumbles]
01:10:39.652 --> 01:10:40.861
[sighs]
01:10:43.113 --> 01:10:45.824
Our promise that we make
to the players is
01:10:45.950 --> 01:10:47.826
you know, we, we...
01:10:48.410 --> 01:10:49.578
we take care of
01:10:50.079 --> 01:10:52.790
their housing
and their food and all that
01:10:53.207 --> 01:10:54.375
for a certain amount of time.
01:10:54.375 --> 01:10:56.835
Obviously we gotta get them
training and we gotta get them
01:10:57.169 --> 01:10:58.379
to be free agents and
01:10:58.379 --> 01:11:00.130
there comes a point in time
01:11:00.798 --> 01:11:01.507
for us
01:11:02.257 --> 01:11:04.760
to say, "OK, this is where we"
01:11:05.177 --> 01:11:06.595
"cut the line here - this is..."
01:11:06.929 --> 01:11:08.097
"We're not gonna sign them."
01:11:09.139 --> 01:11:11.016
You know, that
the players understood
01:11:11.016 --> 01:11:12.851
there was going
to be a time limit
01:11:14.019 --> 01:11:14.895
going in.
01:11:16.188 --> 01:11:19.024
And if they don't sign
within that time limit,
01:11:19.900 --> 01:11:21.235
you know, it's expected that,
01:11:21.527 --> 01:11:23.195
now they have to
make a life of their own.
01:11:23.195 --> 01:11:24.238
Now they have to
01:11:24.738 --> 01:11:25.948
go do something
01:11:26.115 --> 01:11:28.033
that is not baseball related,
01:11:28.158 --> 01:11:30.953
and, you know,
start their lives.
01:11:32.121 --> 01:11:35.124
[traffic]
01:11:35.916 --> 01:11:38.210
[door rumbles]
01:11:38.210 --> 01:11:40.546
[cart scrapes]
[plastic crinkles]
01:11:52.933 --> 01:11:53.559
[door thuds]
01:11:53.559 --> 01:11:56.937
[GPS instructions]
01:12:04.528 --> 01:12:05.738
[door thuds]
01:12:06.071 --> 01:12:09.074
[wind]
01:12:09.867 --> 01:12:12.161
[energetic radio music]
01:12:18.792 --> 01:12:20.794
[pan sizzles]
01:12:37.811 --> 01:12:40.731
[car rumbles]
01:13:11.804 --> 01:13:14.807
[pensive music]
01:14:58.785 --> 01:15:00.204
[bat cracks]
01:15:05.918 --> 01:15:08.921
[music fades]
01:15:12.966 --> 01:15:15.969
[sprinklers hiss]
01:15:21.600 --> 01:15:24.603
[footsteps]
01:15:39.076 --> 01:15:42.079
[silence]
01:15:42.454 --> 01:15:48.669
[sprinklers hiss]
01:15:50.879 --> 01:15:54.800
[car rumbles]
01:15:55.842 --> 01:15:59.054
(Roberto) Everything just kind
of went to hell, you know.
01:16:00.889 --> 01:16:02.933
As far as Carlitos,
01:16:03.225 --> 01:16:04.434
shame on me.
01:16:04.434 --> 01:16:05.227
Shame on me,
01:16:05.227 --> 01:16:06.937
because I don't even know
where he lives.
01:16:07.688 --> 01:16:10.148
Shame on me -
I don't even know if he's got a
01:16:11.233 --> 01:16:13.694
a hot plate of food
in front of him today.
01:16:15.320 --> 01:16:16.029
Shame on me.
01:16:16.029 --> 01:16:17.823
Shame, goddammit, on Gus.
01:16:17.823 --> 01:16:18.865
Villalón.
01:16:19.324 --> 01:16:21.159
Who - they dropped him.
01:16:21.743 --> 01:16:22.619
Just like that.
01:16:22.703 --> 01:16:23.829
Never mind that he's a player.
01:16:23.829 --> 01:16:26.206
Never mind that he was signed.
01:16:27.291 --> 01:16:27.749
You, Gus,
01:16:27.749 --> 01:16:28.208
You, Gus,
01:16:28.500 --> 01:16:31.044
took him out of Cuba,
brought him here.
01:16:31.086 --> 01:16:33.839
All the sudden, you drop him
like a hot potato.
01:16:35.382 --> 01:16:37.426
The situation with Baró…
01:16:38.385 --> 01:16:39.720
In my mind,
01:16:40.178 --> 01:16:42.222
somebody should have
signed the kid.
01:16:42.222 --> 01:16:45.434
And if isn’t Houston, somebody
should have signed the kid.
01:16:45.892 --> 01:16:48.228
There may be something
they don't like about the kid.
01:16:48.228 --> 01:16:50.397
The scouts are, the scouts
are a funny thing.
01:16:50.397 --> 01:16:51.106
You know that.
01:16:52.024 --> 01:16:53.817
They look at you, and
01:16:53.817 --> 01:16:55.402
you walk off the field, and
01:16:55.652 --> 01:16:57.029
That's it. They close an X
01:16:57.946 --> 01:16:59.323
But we'll see.
01:17:01.325 --> 01:17:02.409
Salud.
01:17:05.954 --> 01:17:10.292
[motorbike rumbles]
01:17:12.794 --> 01:17:15.797
[distant radio music]
01:17:25.223 --> 01:17:30.103
[pensive music]
01:17:32.981 --> 01:17:35.192
[distant knocking]
01:18:23.949 --> 01:18:26.952
[dirt crunches]
01:18:54.396 --> 01:18:55.814
[deep breathing]
01:19:07.826 --> 01:19:10.829
[tire drags]
01:19:13.540 --> 01:19:16.543
[music continues]
01:19:28.221 --> 01:19:31.224
[television murmurs]
01:19:40.984 --> 01:19:49.993
[spray hisses]
01:19:51.995 --> 01:19:54.748
[gentle music]
01:20:27.781 --> 01:20:31.576
[crowd murmurs]
01:20:36.748 --> 01:20:39.751
[Happy's mother speaks]
01:20:57.102 --> 01:21:01.398
[Happy's family cheers]
01:21:19.541 --> 01:21:22.544
[music continues]
01:21:38.435 --> 01:21:42.897
[triumphant music]
01:22:18.224 --> 01:22:19.768
[ball thuds]
01:22:40.288 --> 01:22:43.291
[triumphant music continues]
01:26:45.658 --> 01:26:48.661
[music fades]
