FROM COURTYARD HOUSE TO BLOCK APARTMENT looks at the abrupt transition from traditional to modern housing on Taiwan, home to 19 million Chinese.
A rural clan celebrating the coming of autumn provides a glimpse of the courtyard way of life that is nearing extinction in urban areas. The courtyard house is giving way to Western style block apartments as the rapid industrialization of the last two decades has disrupted traditional patterns of living and housing.
FROM COURTYARD HOUSE TO BLOCK APARTMENT examines the reasons for these changes and how the Chinese have adjusted to new patterns of form and space.
'Excellent... The film is able to give the sense of the Chinese much better than text alone.'-Ronald G. Knapp, Professor of Geography, State University of New York at New Paltz; author, CHINA'S TRADITIONAL RURAL ARCHITECTURE
'With an excellent eye for detail [Yao] contrasts traditional rural clan (lineage) houses with modern urban apartments in Taipei, Taiwan... Although almost any general audience should find this video interesting, it is most appropriate for college courses in urban sociology, Chinese area studies, religion, and social-cultural anthropology.'-C.F. Emmons, Choice
'Although the apartments are cramped and ugly, a visit to one family home reveals how ingeniously the occupants have salvaged what they can of the past by adapting traditional customs and habits to fit the modern environment. Recommended.'-Landers Film Reviews
'An illuminating glimpse of Chinese architecture and culture, as well as the flexibility of its people.'-Booklist

And by the subscribers of TV 12.
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:39.999
[music]
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.999
Growing up Chinese in America
was like growing up fat.
00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:49.999
I was often reminded of
being a little different.
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.999
I never did figure out how to handle it,
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.999
but because everybody
told me I was Chinese,
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.999
I often try to imagine, China.
I thought of it
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.999
as a faraway place. Somehow
different, yet very ordered.
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.999
Carved out with intricate
alleys and curving markets.
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:19.999
[music]
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.999
I thought of Chinese as being
solemn with years of history,
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:29.999
still and refined and rather suppressed.
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.999
[music]
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.999
In my imagination,
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.999
I strolled up and down the
mystic mountains of China.
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.999
Most of all, I formed an image of China
as a culture with rhythm and strength.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.999
So when I grew up,
00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.999
I decided to seek the goals of my childhood on
the Island of Taiwan, where so many Chinese
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:05.000
had gone before me.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:18.000
[sil.]
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.999
When I first arrived in Taipei, I was confronted
with the jumble of sights and sounds.
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.999
People, buses, and motorcycles everywhere.
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.999
[sil.]
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.999
Signs and billboards covered
every available surface.
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.999
Advertising night schools, (inaudible),
all kinds of household products.
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.999
There were confusing spaces,
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.999
where old met new, abruptly.
00:02:55.000 --> 00:03:00.000
Instead of harmony, I
discovered contradictions.
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:19.999
[sil.]
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.999
[music]
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.999
So I sought the China I had imagined than the
countryside, where more traditional way of life
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.999
could still be found. Taiwan has a
population of 19 million people
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.999
less than 30% remain in
farming, but among them,
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.999
the traditional relationship between
people, house, and man, still survives.
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.999
Every farm is a self-sufficient world.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.999
Home and place of work are united.
Chinese farm houses
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:59.999
are built around courtyards. Horizontal
rows of rooms are flanked by wings,
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.999
forming an enclosure. The wings can be
extended as the needs of the clan grow.
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.999
The house is laid out
along the central axis.
00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.999
The ceremonial hall, the heart of the
house is in the middle of the last row.
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.999
The doorways also located along
the central axis, allow outsiders
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.999
to enter in different stages.
The courtyard is a transition
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.999
between the outer world and inner
intimacy between indoors and outdoors.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:38.000
[music]
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
This courtyard house belongs to a clan named
Lao(ph) who live in a rural town south of Taipei.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
Until the early 1900s, the
house was made of straw,
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
then everybody pitched in to build
the house with bricks and tiles.
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.999
When industrialization in Taiwan began around 20 years ago,
members of the family began to disperse throughout the island.
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.999
These days about 50 people
live in the family home.
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
But on the day, I visited,
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
the Laos(ph) were holding a sacrifice to mark the
first day of Autumn. Hundreds came from Taipei
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.999
and cities all over the island.
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.999
They burned paper outside the house
for the souls of their ancestors
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
with a characteristic mixture of reference
and everyday matter of factness.
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
A temple sized tripod with incense
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
and sacrificial offerings were placed outside the
ceremonial hall, directly in front of the altar
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
with the ancestor tablets.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:08.000
[music]
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
After offering incense to
the gods individually,
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
the whole clan gathered across
from the ceremonial hall
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:40.000
and the courtyard was transformed
into a church or chapel.
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.999
The Leos(ph) or Hakka people, whose ancestors
emigrated from southern China in 1755.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
On this day, \"The Master of Ceremonies\"
reported to the ancestors,
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
on the prosperity of their descendants.
Now 2,000 strong
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
and spread throughout Taiwan representing
every profession, class, and age.
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
Carved from the ancestors tablets,
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:25.000
were the names of the all the names
in old families and so immigration.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
Hanging on the wall next to the altar where portraits
of the original founders of this branch of Leos(ph),
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
the grandmother and grandfather, who had
made the journey across the seas to Taiwan.
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
These were not my ancestors,
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:50.000
but they unexpectedly showed me
the unifying force of tradition.
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
Shifting easily from the
Sacred to the every day,
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
most people left quickly after the ceremonies
were over. Packing up their offerings
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.999
to take home for their own consumption.
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:18.000
[music]
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.999
They departed to return
to their homes in Taipei
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.999
and other parts of the island,
most only return on holidays
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.999
and special occasions.
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:43.000
[music]
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.999
In a setting originally intended for
extended families, most of the people left,
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.999
seem to be old people and children.
One member in his 50s,
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.999
who lives in Taipei, but has become the
main organizer of family activities,
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:10.000
explains why he maintains such close ties.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:48.000
[music]
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.999
A year ago, the Laozi erected a
family mausoleum behind the house.
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.999
Inside, on a memorial plaque covering a wall, there is a
square left, for each member of the present generation,
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.999
who wishes to be buried in the old
family home. To this generation,
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:09.999
the family home is a resting place
after death more than in life.
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.999
The changes in Taiwanese
society in the last 20 years
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.999
have made it necessary for people to leave
their roots. The courtyard house today,
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.999
stands as a reminder of house
with the tradition passes.
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:29.999
[music]
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:34.999
As I continued my search, I
discovered the Jiang Family,
00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.999
who live on the green mountains in a suburb
of Taipei. Five generations of the family
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.999
have lived and grown in this old
home, but as Taiwan’s economy
00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.999
took off in the late 1960s, the 50
or 60 odd members of the Jiang clan
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:54.999
gradually moved away to nearby
Taipei and more modern dwellings.
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:59.999
The old family home began
to fall into disrepair.
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:08.000
[music]
00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:39.999
Outside forces have even changed the orientation
of the house. A public road was built
00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.999
a few years ago and people now enter
the Jiang house from the back.
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.999
The house borders, a major public university and a
land was purchased not long ago by the government,
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.999
and rented back to the Jiangs.
00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.999
Do the clan of the house is symbolized
most poignantly by the ceremonial hall?
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.999
It has been neglected because there were
so few family members in residence.
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.999
[music]
00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.999
However, 73-year-old Mr. Jiang, the
patriarch of the family has moved back.
00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:19.999
In his earlier days, he
lived and worked in a city
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:24.999
returning only on weekends. Now he has moved back, so
that he can tend his prizewinning orchids every day.
00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:33.000
[music]
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.999
In the natural darkness of the old house, I could
still trace elements of its traditional design,
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.999
panes of glass in a roof to let in light.
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.999
Doors in the hallways between wings have sliding
wooden bolts. Chinese houses and furniture
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.999
have always been constructed along
this principle of interlocking joints,
00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:59.999
fitting together without a single nail.
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.999
[music]
00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.999
Old canopy beds are still in use,
form in a room within a room,
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:14.999
with cabinets for toiletries,
mirrors, and decorative panels.
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:19.999
In the kitchen is a wood field stove, large
enough to cook food for many mouths.
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.999
Running water hooked up to a nearby spring
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:29.999
and an electric rice cooker and
gas stove, more convenient,
00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:34.999
now that there are only a
few people in each meal.
00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:39.999
Images of the Jiang’s ancestors hang on the
wall of the room next to the ceremonial hall
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.999
since the hall is in disuse. Mr.
Jiang’s grandmother on the right
00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:49.999
and his father and mother to the left,
are part of the 180 years of history
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.999
their clan has claimed to, since their
immigration to Taiwan from the China mainland.
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:59.999
But the Jiang Family line
will not continue in this.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:05.000
Mr. Jiang explains why.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.999
[non-English narration]
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:30.000
Age old skills are no longer handed
down from generation to generation.
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:58.000
[sil.]
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.999
The courtyard house was designed
for a different tempo of life.
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.999
For better or worse, that way of life
is passing away with this generation.
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:18.000
[music]
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.999
[sil.]
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:29.999
The breakdown of the traditional way
of life has created oppressing need
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:34.999
for suitable housing for a city population.
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.999
The mass-produce western style apartments
and office buildings which fill the city
00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.999
are response to just such a need.
00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:53.000
[music]
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.999
From the early 1950s,
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.999
a certain pattern for apartments
has been repeated all over Taipei.
00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:33.000
[music]
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:54.999
One Sunday, a friend took me to visit his
uncle’s home, a middle-class dwelling
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:59.999
that was constructed in 1982, and is already the
second or third generation of the original prototype.
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:04.999
I discovered that modern Chinese
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:09.999
have had to adapt their habits to
these western style apartments.
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:14.999
Joy in this junctions result, as
custom attempts to adapt to form.
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:23.000
[sil.]
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.999
Mr. Gao is a retired army man, who came to
Taiwan with the nationalist government in 1949.
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:40.000
He says that he prefers the
courtyard house of the past.
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.999
The living room is clearly the most important room,
but it isn’t the spiritual and physical center
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.999
that the ceremonial hall was. No
matter how carefully decorated it is.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:14.999
The altar gets placed in the corner
00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:19.999
with the most center like feeling. By
seeming coincidence, in most homes
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.999
it seems to be placed in
competition with the television.
00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:29.999
Even the objects on the altar
show that this is a new age,
00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.999
the ancestor tablet is still present, but light
bulbs in red shades have replaced candles
00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.999
and the offering cups of
water are made of plastic.
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.999
Steel bars over windows are for the
protection of residents against burglary,
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:49.999
but in case of fire, escape is impossible.
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.999
The display cabinets are another focal point,
stacked to foreign liquors in fancy bottles,
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.999
priced photos and teacups,
mementos, and gifts.
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.999
The objects on the shelf, arrange
like the people in the apartments.
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.999
[sil.]
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.999
Traditional houses had no formal bathrooms or
kitchens. Many Chinese still separate these areas
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:19.999
by wearing a different
set of sandals in each.
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.999
[music]
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:29.999
Modern Chinese kitchens still
have a mid makeshift look.
00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:38.000
[music]
00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:13.000
[sil.]
00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:19.999
With no courtyard or fields to play in, the
children often play indoors, passing their time
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:25.000
with new kinds of activities.
00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:49.999
[music]
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.999
The closest residents get to nature
is tending plants on the balcony
00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:59.999
or the rooftop. It is if the court yard
has been moved to the roof or balcony.
00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:08.000
[music]
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.999
Traditional Chinese architecture form is the result of
thousands of years of human interaction with the environment.
00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:39.999
Variations depended on the
character of the land and customs,
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:44.999
but always evolve from people’s living
habits, not being living around.
00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:53.000
[music]
00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:59.999
In this past 30 years in Taiwan have seen changes
of a magnitude previously unexperienced in history.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:04.999
In a situation where the demand for
urban housing exceeded the supply,
00:22:05.000 --> 00:22:09.999
architects did not adapt
patterns from the west,
00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:14.999
to conditions in Taiwan.
00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:19.999
Block apartments and office building
sprung up as the nation modernized.
00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:24.999
People learn to use every side of their
box houses to make it fit their needs.
00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:33.000
[music]
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:44.999
Human beings will always find a way to
survive in any kind of environment,
00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:49.999
but as I learn more about Taiwan’s contemporary
urban housing, it occurs to me that
00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.999
unthinkingly an entirely different
kind of culture is emerging
00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:59.999
from this new pattern of housing.
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.999
After I’ve understood the passing
of Taiwan’s architecture,
00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:09.999
from traditional to modern, I was less
disappointed in demise of my childhood dreams.
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:14.999
In fact, I found that the
Chinese have displayed
00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:19.999
both, strength and ingenuity in
adapting to these new circumstances.
00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:24.999
In my heart of hearts, I
still secretly harbor
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.999
romantic images of China.
Perhaps, the past always glows
00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:34.999
with the (inaudible) of another age, but it
is the present that has to pull of immediacy.
00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:39.999
The Chinese cannot return to the
traditional courtyard house of your,
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:44.999
but they must try to regain
a housing that will breathe
00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:50.000
as they breathe and grow as they grow.
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:48.000
[music]
00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:54.999
The broadcast of the proceeding independent production was
made possible by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
00:30:55.000 --> 00:31:00.000
And by the subscribers of TV 12.
