In 2014, ISIS launched a genocidal campaign that targeted the Yazidi community of northern Iraq, resulting in the imprisonment of thousands of women and children. Twelve-year-old Dawod and his mother managed to escape, and have been resettled in London, Ontario, where Angel Peacock follows his first year in his Canada.

00:00:17.133 --> 00:00:19.333
(slow drumming)
00:00:19.567 --> 00:00:22.333
- Okay.
(drumming)
00:00:29.533 --> 00:00:32.200
(speaking Arabic)
00:00:58.066 --> 00:01:01.000
(background chatter)
00:01:11.500 --> 00:01:12.767
(indistinct chatter)
00:01:12.767 --> 00:01:15.166
- Alright, Abby.
- Grey\'s Anatomy.
00:01:15.166 --> 00:01:16.133
- Greyhounds Academy?
00:01:16.133 --> 00:01:18.567
- I don\'t know what that is.
- I don\'t either.
00:01:18.567 --> 00:01:19.200
(giggling)
00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:22.400
Alright, moving on.
Thank you, Apollo.
00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:24.033
So I got Deegan, right?
00:01:24.033 --> 00:01:26.433
- Yeah.
- Yeah, okay. Stanley? Hi.
00:01:26.433 --> 00:01:28.767
- I don\'t have
a favourite TV show.
00:01:28.767 --> 00:01:30.567
- Okay. That\'s alright. Aiden?
00:01:30.567 --> 00:01:32.333
- No, I don\'t watch TV.
- Okay, great.
00:01:32.333 --> 00:01:35.533
- I\'ve just seen Lori
with white hair!
00:01:35.533 --> 00:01:36.567
- Dawod?
00:01:36.567 --> 00:01:39.567
- Dawod.
- Do you watch TV?
00:01:39.567 --> 00:01:40.633
- He doesn\'t speak English.
00:01:40.633 --> 00:01:42.033
- Does he watch TV?
- He doesn\'t know...
00:01:42.033 --> 00:01:44.500
He speaks English, but
he doesn\'t know what that means.
00:01:44.500 --> 00:01:47.166
- No English.
- Not really? Okay. Yeah.
00:01:47.166 --> 00:01:48.133
- He knows what it is.
00:01:48.133 --> 00:01:50.533
- It\'s not for everyone
all the time. Kayley.
00:01:50.533 --> 00:01:51.667
(laughter)
00:01:51.667 --> 00:01:53.033
Okay.
- Yeah.
00:01:53.033 --> 00:01:55.333
- Do you have
a favourite TV show?
00:01:55.333 --> 00:01:57.066
(indistinct chatter)
00:01:57.066 --> 00:01:59.266
- The Squad.
- The Squad.
00:01:59.266 --> 00:02:00.200
Chloe?
00:02:00.200 --> 00:02:03.000
- Not here.
- Not here.
00:02:34.467 --> 00:02:37.033
(speaking Arabic)
00:02:37.033 --> 00:02:39.066
- You\'re welcome.
00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:42.266
- Thank you.
(woman laughing)
00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:49.000
(Arabic chatter)
00:03:40.433 --> 00:03:42.467
(Arabic)
00:03:49.166 --> 00:03:51.166
- Mm-hmm.
00:04:12.233 --> 00:04:14.467
- Mm...
- Mm.
00:05:10.633 --> 00:05:12.433
- Oh.
00:06:21.567 --> 00:06:24.100
- Okay. So I\'m gonna
whoop you guys up.
00:06:24.100 --> 00:06:24.633
You guys stand up!
00:06:24.633 --> 00:06:27.033
(funky music playing)
(indistinct chatter)
00:06:27.033 --> 00:06:30.066
Alright!
(indistinct chatter)
00:06:39.533 --> 00:06:41.433
Nice.
00:06:48.300 --> 00:06:51.467
Alright!
(clapping to music)
00:06:58.433 --> 00:07:00.467
Nice! You guys going in?
00:07:00.467 --> 00:07:02.266
(indistinct chatter)
00:07:02.266 --> 00:07:04.433
- No.
- No?
00:07:04.600 --> 00:07:07.000
(Arabic)
00:07:08.700 --> 00:07:12.600
It\'s okay. It\'s okay
if you don\'t want to go.
00:07:15.300 --> 00:07:19.166
- Okay, so you have
to do a circle.
00:07:19.166 --> 00:07:20.600
- Yes.
00:07:45.166 --> 00:07:48.266
There\'s a... house in Badra.
00:07:48.266 --> 00:07:49.000
They...
00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:52.533
they have took this bird
they called \"God House.\"
00:07:52.533 --> 00:07:56.000
They said every year,
when the Baba Sheikh,
00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.433
the leader,
he go there five minutes.
00:07:58.433 --> 00:08:01.333
He go through the -
like, a hutch -
00:08:01.333 --> 00:08:02.400
to pray there.
00:08:02.400 --> 00:08:03.700
- Mm-hmm.
- And he came back.
00:08:03.700 --> 00:08:06.266
He say he have a lot of security
around him.
00:08:06.266 --> 00:08:08.166
- Mm-hmm.
00:08:29.266 --> 00:08:31.200
- Mm...
00:08:33.400 --> 00:08:35.600
(Sadet repeating)
00:08:39.133 --> 00:08:41.433
- Dawod! Dawod!
00:08:41.433 --> 00:08:43.300
Dawod!
00:08:43.300 --> 00:08:46.000
Recess! We go outside!
00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:47.400
Outside.
00:08:47.400 --> 00:08:48.066
- No outside.
00:08:48.066 --> 00:08:50.200
- Yes. Yes, Dawod.
We have to go outside.
00:08:50.200 --> 00:08:51.734
- No!
- Yes!
00:08:51.734 --> 00:08:54.266
- No!
- Yes, go outside.
00:08:54.266 --> 00:08:55.734
- No.
00:08:56.533 --> 00:08:59.333
- Come on, let\'s go outside!
00:08:59.400 --> 00:09:01.200
- No outside! No.
00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:03.133
(indistinct chatter)
00:09:03.133 --> 00:09:05.500
- We\'ve gotta go outside
and have fun.
00:09:05.500 --> 00:09:09.066
Come on, let\'s go.
(indistinct chatter)
00:09:10.133 --> 00:09:12.433
(speaking Arabic)
00:09:16.033 --> 00:09:17.533
- Every morning,
it would be time for school,
00:09:17.533 --> 00:09:20.133
and his brother would come
and be, like, shaking him,
00:09:20.133 --> 00:09:23.433
and tell him to get up and:
\"Now it\'s time for school.\"
00:09:23.433 --> 00:09:25.100
- This is his older brother
who is still in Iraq?
00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:28.467
- Yeah. His brother, Basim.
The one who\'s still in Iraq.
00:09:28.467 --> 00:09:31.767
And he would refuse to get out
of bed and go to school.
00:09:31.767 --> 00:09:35.300
And the brother would, like,
shake him and he\'s, like:
00:09:35.300 --> 00:09:36.233
\"Get up! Get up!\"
00:09:36.233 --> 00:09:38.266
And he... he said, \"I\'m scared.
I don\'t want to go,
00:09:38.266 --> 00:09:41.200
because ISIS might catch me
if I go to school.\"
00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:44.333
So he is, uh,
12 years old right now.
00:09:44.333 --> 00:09:45.700
And that whole time,
00:09:45.700 --> 00:09:49.133
he\'s only had one year
of education.
00:09:52.533 --> 00:09:54.567
Okay. Oh.
00:09:54.567 --> 00:09:55.400
This one?
00:09:55.400 --> 00:09:56.600
- No!
- No!
00:09:56.600 --> 00:09:58.166
(laughter)
Dawod this?
00:09:58.166 --> 00:10:01.433
- No.
- I don\'t like lettuce.
00:10:01.433 --> 00:10:03.500
- No.
-Dawod, I don\'t...
00:10:03.500 --> 00:10:07.533
- ...like luckis.
- I don\'t like lettuce. Good!
00:10:07.533 --> 00:10:09.166
Okay. This one?
00:10:09.166 --> 00:10:11.467
- Okay.
- Tomato.
00:10:11.467 --> 00:10:13.767
- Tomato.
- I like tomato.
00:10:13.767 --> 00:10:17.400
- I like tomato.
- Ah. Dawod eat tomato?
00:10:17.400 --> 00:10:19.333
- Okay.
00:10:23.133 --> 00:10:25.400
I...
- Uh-huh.
00:10:25.400 --> 00:10:26.467
Like...
00:10:26.467 --> 00:10:29.333
- Tomato.
- Mm-hmm. Carrot.
00:10:32.166 --> 00:10:32.767
- I...
00:10:32.767 --> 00:10:35.367
- It\'s... To be honest,
I think it\'s unrealistic
00:10:35.367 --> 00:10:39.033
to expect him to catch up
to the other kids,
00:10:39.033 --> 00:10:40.667
because that would be
at least -
00:10:40.667 --> 00:10:45.233
what? - five, six years of work
that he has to catch up on.
00:10:45.233 --> 00:10:48.400
- One-two--
- Ah-ha-ha, yes, yes, yes.
00:10:48.400 --> 00:10:49.367
Big checkmark!
00:10:49.367 --> 00:10:52.533
- Big checkmarks.
- Big checkmark. Okay!
00:10:52.533 --> 00:10:55.467
Dawod, recess... outside.
00:10:55.467 --> 00:10:58.300
- No outside.
(teacher laughing)
00:10:58.300 --> 00:11:01.333
- Yes, outside, Dawod. Dawod?
00:11:01.333 --> 00:11:04.100
(indistinct chatter)
No. Away.
00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:05.533
No music. Okay?
00:11:05.533 --> 00:11:08.000
- No outside.
- Yes outside.
00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:09.567
- No.
- Yes outside.
00:11:09.567 --> 00:11:13.166
Yes? Okay, classroom.
00:11:13.367 --> 00:11:15.333
- Class.
00:11:20.233 --> 00:11:23.066
(background chatter)
00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:29.066
Hi, Dawod. How are you?
00:12:30.433 --> 00:12:32.333
(Arabic)
00:12:32.433 --> 00:12:34.467
(Arabic)
00:12:48.066 --> 00:12:51.066
(laughing)
- Bring a chair.
00:12:52.200 --> 00:12:54.467
Yeah, bring a chair.
00:13:05.367 --> 00:13:09.333
(Kamla): So the class...
we call it the gentle class.
00:13:09.333 --> 00:13:10.367
So it\'s just a class...
00:13:10.367 --> 00:13:14.000
for Yazidi children that
have experienced some trauma,
00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:19.467
and that can come
into a safe and secure place.
00:13:20.133 --> 00:13:21.400
I don\'t know
what was happening in school,
00:13:21.400 --> 00:13:24.533
but they were just looking
for another place for him to go
00:13:24.533 --> 00:13:27.533
that he would enjoy school more,
I think.
00:13:27.533 --> 00:13:29.567
Dawod, high-five.
00:13:29.567 --> 00:13:32.200
- No more fives.
- High-five.
00:13:32.200 --> 00:13:34.266
(laughing)
00:13:34.467 --> 00:13:36.467
High-five?
00:13:38.100 --> 00:13:40.066
- High-five.
00:14:53.100 --> 00:14:54.567
(kids screaming)
00:14:54.567 --> 00:14:57.400
- We\'re gonna go join
in the soccer team.
00:14:57.400 --> 00:14:58.266
- Pfft.
00:14:58.266 --> 00:15:02.000
- We\'re gonna try
to join in the soccer team.
00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.333
(Arabic)
00:15:03.333 --> 00:15:05.333
- He doesn\'t want
you guys to come.
00:15:05.333 --> 00:15:05.734
- Why?
00:15:05.734 --> 00:15:08.467
- But it\'s up to you.
It\'s not his choice.
00:15:08.467 --> 00:15:10.200
(indistinct chatter)
00:15:10.200 --> 00:15:12.300
- Put it back up!
- Dawod!
00:15:12.300 --> 00:15:15.333
(indistinct chatter)
- Watch.
00:15:19.767 --> 00:15:22.600
(Arabic)
(excited chatter)
00:15:25.633 --> 00:15:27.567
- Pass!
- Hey!
00:15:27.567 --> 00:15:29.200
- Pass, pass! Pass.
00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:32.166
(indistinct chatter)
Pass, pass!
00:15:34.367 --> 00:15:35.467
(whooping)
00:15:35.467 --> 00:15:39.567
(screaming)
(indistinct chatter)
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:44.066
(laughter)
00:15:45.367 --> 00:15:47.467
- Let\'s go!
00:15:47.467 --> 00:15:50.166
(indistinct chatter)
00:18:16.367 --> 00:18:18.600
(sniffling)
00:18:52.200 --> 00:18:53.467
(Arabic)
00:18:53.467 --> 00:18:56.066
(Dawod sniffling)
00:20:42.767 --> 00:20:44.400
(funky music playing)
- Each square step...
00:20:44.400 --> 00:20:48.300
it\'s gonna be... and then go...
you\'re gonna step in, right?
00:20:48.300 --> 00:20:53.333
So once, stepping like this,
right? You step right.
00:20:56.567 --> 00:20:59.333
Okay?
(indistinct chatter)
00:21:02.300 --> 00:21:04.166
Right.
00:21:04.400 --> 00:21:07.433
Left. Hip hop.
00:21:10.100 --> 00:21:12.467
(background chatter)
00:21:15.433 --> 00:21:18.066
(soft music)
00:21:23.066 --> 00:21:25.467
(indistinct chatter)
00:21:37.033 --> 00:21:39.266
(soft music)
00:21:54.433 --> 00:21:56.000
- Dawod.
00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:58.333
- You in?
(Arabic)
00:22:15.567 --> 00:22:18.333
(up-tempo music)
00:22:31.266 --> 00:22:33.200
- Whoo!
00:22:40.500 --> 00:22:42.433
- Nice!
