At nightfall in East Timor, a father kidnaps his daughter. He's suspected to be armed and dangerous, and the family is frantic. On the scene are Canadian police constables Martine LeRoyer of Montreal and Debbie Doyle, who have just joined the United Nations Civilian Police. Their first assignment is to rescue the little girl from a tiny, ramshackle house.
Since Indonesia occupied East Timor in 1975, the island has been devastated by horrifying violence and genocide. Now, large-scale international efforts are focused on stabilizing the region. Doyle and LeRoyer face enormous challenges on their nine-month tour of duty, from adapting to a new culture and gaining the trust of frightened communities to performing perilous and heartbreaking police work.
This gripping documentary follows the two women, from the capital of Dili to remote villages, chronicling the aftermath of the atrocities that haunt East Timor. Combining intimate interviews, up-close footage and diary cams, Women on Patrol is a riveting look at the rebuilding of a nation, and how the experience profoundly transforms these women--as police officers and as humans.

00:00:18.083 --> 00:00:20.998
(narrator): On dark and deserted
roads like this one,
00:00:20.999 --> 00:00:24.291
bands of militiamen
once terrorized
00:00:24.292 --> 00:00:26.249
the countryside of East Timor,
00:00:26.250 --> 00:00:28.998
burning villages, looting homes,
00:00:28.999 --> 00:00:31.918
killing entire families.
00:00:32.999 --> 00:00:35.998
But tonight\'s raid
isn\'t being led by vigilantes.
00:00:35.999 --> 00:00:39.249
Tonight, two Canadian women
will begin their first tour
00:00:39.250 --> 00:00:42.875
of duty with CIVPOL,
the United Nation\'s
00:00:42.876 --> 00:00:44.917
police force in East Timor.
00:00:44.918 --> 00:00:49.999
A tour of duty
that will change their lives.
00:01:18.834 --> 00:01:21.999
(speaking Tetum)
00:01:23.999 --> 00:01:26.750
- Where are the children?
Where are the children?
00:01:26.751 --> 00:01:30.833
(narrator): A little girl has
been kidnapped by her father
00:01:30.834 --> 00:01:32.998
and hidden by his family.
00:01:32.999 --> 00:01:35.999
The tactical team is here
to find the child
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:37.998
and arrest the father,
00:01:37.999 --> 00:01:41.667
a man who could be armed
and dangerous.
00:01:43.584 --> 00:01:44.958
(speaking Tetum)
00:01:44.959 --> 00:01:47.041
With the team
is Constable Debbie Doyle,
00:01:47.042 --> 00:01:50.166
a 14-year veteran
of the Edmonton City Police.
00:01:50.167 --> 00:01:52.999
- Does she know
where the outpost house is?
00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:55.124
(narrator): It\'s been
a good night for everyone,
00:01:55.125 --> 00:01:58.875
including Montreal Police
Constable Martine Le Royer.
00:01:58.876 --> 00:02:01.750
A mother and child
have been reunited.
00:02:01.751 --> 00:02:04.999
- It\'s not normal
to see so many people.
00:02:05.918 --> 00:02:09.124
- We had to debate,
because she was here
00:02:09.125 --> 00:02:11.999
and asked for her daughter.
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:14.500
They hid the girl.
00:02:14.501 --> 00:02:16.416
(narrator): This is the third
U.N. mission
00:02:16.417 --> 00:02:19.291
for Portuguese Police Officer
Maria Da Silva.
00:02:19.292 --> 00:02:21.458
So she knows
just how frustrating
00:02:21.459 --> 00:02:25.208
the first case
in a strange country can be.
00:02:25.209 --> 00:02:27.374
- So we found the little girl,
00:02:27.375 --> 00:02:29.291
but the suspect is hiding.
00:02:29.292 --> 00:02:31.249
And he\'s gonna hide
for a long time, I think,
00:02:31.250 --> 00:02:33.999
because everybody knows
that we\'re looking after him.
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:35.998
- I went to get a position
behind the table.
00:02:35.999 --> 00:02:38.875
So I was backing up,
because the door was there,
00:02:38.876 --> 00:02:41.583
and I went to step back
and I heard... (squawking sound)
00:02:41.584 --> 00:02:44.458
I lift up my foot
and turned and looked
00:02:44.459 --> 00:02:45.998
and I stepped on a chicken.
00:02:45.999 --> 00:02:49.292
This doesn\'t happen
back in Canada.
00:02:50.918 --> 00:02:53.292
- In line, ready.
00:02:58.501 --> 00:03:01.374
(narrator): Debbie and Martine\'s
journey began in Canada
00:03:01.375 --> 00:03:03.458
with an intense
six-week training course,
00:03:03.459 --> 00:03:05.998
designed to test
whether they\'re strong enough
00:03:05.999 --> 00:03:09.542
to face the challenges
of East Timor.
00:03:11.918 --> 00:03:14.999
- Up!
00:03:15.751 --> 00:03:19.249
(narrator): Martine was inspired
to become a cop by her father,
00:03:19.250 --> 00:03:23.125
a decorated veteran
of the Montreal Police Force.
00:03:35.999 --> 00:03:38.458
Debbie Doyle,
and her husband Dan,
00:03:38.459 --> 00:03:42.500
are the first Canadian couple to
serve on the same U.N. mission.
00:03:42.501 --> 00:03:47.042
For both, being a cop
means making a difference.
00:03:47.292 --> 00:03:49.998
- We have a very large advantage
over a lot of the others.
00:03:49.999 --> 00:03:53.082
And I\'ve seen that in the past
two weeks here, that I\'ve spent
00:03:53.083 --> 00:03:55.998
with all the rest of the people
going over with us.
00:03:55.999 --> 00:03:57.917
Even though
we\'re still in Canada,
00:03:57.918 --> 00:04:00.998
they\'re missing their families
a great deal already.
00:04:00.999 --> 00:04:02.958
Fortunately, Debbie and I
will be together,
00:04:02.959 --> 00:04:05.500
if not in the same posting,
at least in the same country.
00:04:05.501 --> 00:04:08.333
- I don\'t believe we\'re gonna
be stationed together.
00:04:08.334 --> 00:04:09.791
However, it\'s hard to say.
00:04:09.792 --> 00:04:14.166
I looked at the Americans,
the British and the French,
00:04:14.167 --> 00:04:17.458
going into Germany
after the war and rebuilding,
00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:20.500
and I look at this
as a similar type of mission,
00:04:20.501 --> 00:04:22.708
Being able to help
rebuild a country
00:04:22.709 --> 00:04:23.998
and bring it back on its feet.
00:04:23.999 --> 00:04:26.791
So maybe in 50 years\' time,
someone can look back and say,
00:04:26.792 --> 00:04:31.292
\"That was a decent thing
that the United Nations did.\"
00:04:47.125 --> 00:04:49.500
(narrator):
There are 14 police officers
00:04:49.501 --> 00:04:50.501
in the Canadian contingent,
00:04:50.502 --> 00:04:53.917
and their tour of duty
will last nine months.
00:04:53.918 --> 00:04:55.541
During training,
they\'ve heard a lot
00:04:55.542 --> 00:04:58.998
about East Timor\'s past.
But hearing is one thing,
00:04:58.999 --> 00:05:01.999
seeing is another.
00:05:03.792 --> 00:05:06.208
Twenty-four-thousand
square kilometres
00:05:06.209 --> 00:05:09.291
of lush forest
and pristine beaches.
00:05:09.292 --> 00:05:14.458
In 1975, the Indonesians
invade East Timor,
00:05:14.459 --> 00:05:16.249
setting up a brutal regime
00:05:16.250 --> 00:05:19.416
that will last
almost three decades.
00:05:19.417 --> 00:05:22.208
Two-hundred-and-fifty-
thousand people,
00:05:22.209 --> 00:05:26.625
a third of East Timor\'s
population, will die
00:05:26.626 --> 00:05:29.459
as a result of the occupation.
00:05:31.542 --> 00:05:33.998
Faced
with international protest,
00:05:33.999 --> 00:05:36.124
in 1999, the U.N.
00:05:36.125 --> 00:05:39.998
finally sends in troops,
and the Indonesians
00:05:39.999 --> 00:05:41.998
are forced to withdraw.
00:05:41.999 --> 00:05:43.625
A U.N. administration is set up
00:05:43.626 --> 00:05:47.501
to maintain peace
and pave the way for democracy.
00:06:07.876 --> 00:06:09.791
- How are you?
00:06:09.792 --> 00:06:12.041
Hi. Welcome.
- Sir.
00:06:12.042 --> 00:06:13.917
- Debbie Doyle. Double D.
Welcome.
00:06:13.918 --> 00:06:18.082
(narrator): Peter Miller,
a 34-year veteran of the RCMP,
00:06:18.083 --> 00:06:22.041
is now the U.N.\'s top cop
in East Timor.
00:06:22.042 --> 00:06:23.583
As Police Commissioner,
00:06:23.584 --> 00:06:27.458
he has more than 3,000 local
and international officers
00:06:27.459 --> 00:06:28.998
under his command.
00:06:28.999 --> 00:06:32.082
- It starts at one o\'clock,
so we gotta move.
00:06:32.083 --> 00:06:34.124
(laughter)
00:06:34.125 --> 00:06:36.998
- You\'re coming here
at a very interesting time
00:06:36.999 --> 00:06:38.541
in the history of East Timor.
00:06:38.542 --> 00:06:41.998
It\'s a mission that is right
00:06:41.999 --> 00:06:44.124
at the critical point right now
00:06:44.125 --> 00:06:46.500
and you\'re arriving here
just at that time
00:06:46.501 --> 00:06:48.998
when we\'re gonna have
a presidential election.
00:06:48.999 --> 00:06:50.625
And we\'re also going to have
00:06:50.626 --> 00:06:52.791
the Independence Day
on the 20th of May.
00:06:52.792 --> 00:06:56.333
You can\'t send your police
officer to a greater school,
00:06:56.334 --> 00:06:56.999
than sending them
00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.998
to an international
peace-keeping mission,
00:06:58.999 --> 00:07:01.998
to sensitize them on working
with other cultures.
00:07:01.999 --> 00:07:04.958
We need women because
the police forces were creating,
00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:06.583
such as here in east Timor...
00:07:06.584 --> 00:07:09.958
Over 25% of the police officers
are women.
00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:11.708
And it\'s nice when they have
00:07:11.709 --> 00:07:13.917
international role models
that are women.
00:07:13.918 --> 00:07:18.291
- East Timor
spent over 450 years
00:07:18.292 --> 00:07:19.998
as a Portuguese colony.
00:07:19.999 --> 00:07:21.917
(narrator): After
a one-week crash course,
00:07:21.918 --> 00:07:24.374
the officers
receive their orders.
00:07:24.375 --> 00:07:27.124
For most of the mission,
Debbie and Dan
00:07:27.125 --> 00:07:28.998
will serve in different units.
00:07:28.999 --> 00:07:32.792
But Debbie and Martine
will work together.
00:07:36.250 --> 00:07:39.166
Their first assignment
takes them to Dili,
00:07:39.167 --> 00:07:41.999
East Timor\'s capital city.
00:07:51.999 --> 00:07:54.750
Their unit is VPU,
00:07:54.751 --> 00:07:57.124
the Vulnerable Person\'s Unit.
00:07:57.125 --> 00:07:59.333
- This is gonna be very fun, eh?
00:07:59.334 --> 00:08:00.999
Lots of work to do.
00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:02.541
Lots and lots of work to do.
00:08:02.542 --> 00:08:05.833
- It\'s a very interesting unit,
Vulnerable Person\'s Unit.
00:08:05.834 --> 00:08:09.875
Involved in sexual assaults,
rapes, domestic violence,
00:08:09.876 --> 00:08:12.833
dealing with all
the vulnerable people.
00:08:12.834 --> 00:08:15.333
(narrator): What Debbie and
Martine will soon discover,
00:08:15.334 --> 00:08:19.751
is that East Timor itself
is a vulnerable society.
00:08:20.334 --> 00:08:23.625
It\'s been three years since
the Indonesian occupation ended,
00:08:23.626 --> 00:08:27.999
but the threat of violence
lives on.
00:08:30.125 --> 00:08:33.333
Most of the people here
are Catholic.
00:08:33.334 --> 00:08:34.875
Most have witnessed atrocities
00:08:34.876 --> 00:08:37.416
that would test
even the strongest faith.
00:08:37.417 --> 00:08:40.998
In 1992, more than 100 students
00:08:40.999 --> 00:08:44.166
were gunned down in a cemetery.
00:08:44.167 --> 00:08:47.249
In 1999, when East Timor
voted for independence,
00:08:47.250 --> 00:08:49.708
the Indonesians
went on a killing spree,
00:08:49.709 --> 00:08:52.124
setting fire to the city of Dili
00:08:52.125 --> 00:08:55.834
and murdering
more than 2,000 people.
00:08:58.792 --> 00:09:00.666
These are the ghosts
00:09:00.667 --> 00:09:03.041
that haunt East Timor.
00:09:03.042 --> 00:09:04.208
A month from now,
00:09:04.209 --> 00:09:06.998
these people will celebrate
their hard-won independence.
00:09:06.999 --> 00:09:09.500
But if pro-Indonesian forces
attack,
00:09:09.501 --> 00:09:12.998
the Independence Day celebration
00:09:12.999 --> 00:09:14.875
could turn violent.
00:09:14.876 --> 00:09:17.917
That\'s why every U.N. cop
on the island
00:09:17.918 --> 00:09:20.876
is preparing for it.
00:09:33.999 --> 00:09:38.709
Most East Timorese are peaceful,
law-abiding citizens.
00:09:39.209 --> 00:09:41.124
But every society
has its dark side.
00:09:41.125 --> 00:09:45.542
And here, it\'s been compounded
by the legacy of war.
00:09:46.709 --> 00:09:49.124
And it\'s the dark side
of any society
00:09:49.125 --> 00:09:52.751
that most police officers see.
00:09:57.876 --> 00:10:01.333
Today, Martine and Commanding
Officer Maria Da Silva
00:10:01.334 --> 00:10:03.583
will do follow-up
on the kind of case
00:10:03.584 --> 00:10:06.208
that no police officer
ever wants to see.
00:10:06.209 --> 00:10:08.374
- Hello.
(narrator): Three weeks ago,
00:10:08.375 --> 00:10:11.416
an eight-year-old child
was assaulted.
00:10:11.417 --> 00:10:13.374
The prime suspect
00:10:13.375 --> 00:10:14.541
is her father.
00:10:14.542 --> 00:10:19.750
It was Martine\'s first major
case as a lead investigator.
00:10:19.751 --> 00:10:23.751
- Your sister, huh?
Where\'s the big one?
00:10:24.999 --> 00:10:26.791
Here? In the house?
00:10:26.792 --> 00:10:29.750
- It was the doctor
who called us, remember?
00:10:29.751 --> 00:10:32.958
Because they didn\'t want
to report to police.
00:10:32.959 --> 00:10:34.998
- I was called at...
00:10:34.999 --> 00:10:37.082
- Three o\'clock in the morning.
- Yes.
00:10:37.083 --> 00:10:39.917
To investigate on this case.
00:10:39.918 --> 00:10:41.458
When I saw her at the hospital,
00:10:41.459 --> 00:10:44.291
she was in so bad shape...
It was hurting so much
00:10:44.292 --> 00:10:47.998
to see her crying and screaming
and... oh, my God.
00:10:47.999 --> 00:10:50.875
- And even the...
remember the clothes and...
00:10:50.876 --> 00:10:52.374
- Everything was full of blood.
00:10:52.375 --> 00:10:54.999
- The evidence that we took
from the hospital,
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.708
it was so full of blood
that it was...
00:10:57.709 --> 00:11:00.750
- \'Cause he tried five times
to do it,
00:11:00.751 --> 00:11:02.999
but he was not going inside her.
00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:04.750
So it was not...
00:11:04.751 --> 00:11:07.999
- He was not penetrating her.
- Yes.
00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:09.875
(baby crying)
00:11:09.876 --> 00:11:12.917
You feeling better?
00:11:12.918 --> 00:11:14.750
A little bit?
00:11:14.751 --> 00:11:18.999
We should talk with the mother
and finish her statement first.
00:11:20.501 --> 00:11:23.583
- Her mom became...
- She just had a baby,
00:11:23.584 --> 00:11:26.333
like, a month ago,
when it happened.
00:11:26.334 --> 00:11:27.998
She was, like, very, very tired.
00:11:27.999 --> 00:11:32.374
She couldn\'t sleep,
so she had like a depression.
00:11:32.375 --> 00:11:35.833
(speaking Tetum)
00:11:35.834 --> 00:11:39.124
- If we don\'t charge him
in the court,
00:11:39.125 --> 00:11:40.000
what is the feeling
00:11:40.001 --> 00:11:44.250
to give to the person
that raped her daughter?
00:11:46.999 --> 00:11:48.998
- She keeps saying
00:11:48.999 --> 00:11:49.999
different things.
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:53.041
It means that she wants
to hide something.
00:11:53.042 --> 00:11:56.333
So my concern is that...
00:11:56.334 --> 00:11:58.374
I don\'t know what to believe.
00:11:58.375 --> 00:11:59.917
He told us, the first time,
00:11:59.918 --> 00:12:04.833
that he thought that it was
his wife lying in the bed.
00:12:04.834 --> 00:12:05.917
- Yeah...
00:12:05.918 --> 00:12:08.166
- And he noticed
after he did it,
00:12:08.167 --> 00:12:09.500
that it was the little girl.
00:12:09.501 --> 00:12:12.998
- But, remember, I asked him,
\"But why you did this?\"
00:12:12.999 --> 00:12:14.998
Because I was so upset
and so mad.
00:12:14.999 --> 00:12:19.875
And you know what he said?
\"Oh, it was the Devil, Satan.\"
00:12:19.876 --> 00:12:22.291
- Yes.
- I said, \"Oh, please!\"
00:12:22.292 --> 00:12:25.917
- Isn\'t that the one that said
that his wife was not available?
00:12:25.918 --> 00:12:28.333
- Yeah.
- And that\'s why he did it also.
00:12:28.334 --> 00:12:29.998
- One of the times,
00:12:29.999 --> 00:12:33.458
she was delivering the baby
at the hospital.
00:12:33.459 --> 00:12:36.998
- He has to understand this.
This is his rights, okay?
00:12:36.999 --> 00:12:39.998
(speaking Tetum)
00:12:39.999 --> 00:12:42.583
I\'d like him to tell me
00:12:42.584 --> 00:12:45.958
what happened two days ago.
00:12:45.959 --> 00:12:48.626
(speaking Tetum)
00:12:52.083 --> 00:12:54.875
It\'s 5:05
00:12:54.876 --> 00:12:56.374
and we have a confession.
00:12:56.375 --> 00:13:00.584
So I\'m very happy about this.
- Woo-hoo!
00:13:24.626 --> 00:13:27.041
(narrator): In Canada,
police constables
00:13:27.042 --> 00:13:31.958
like Debbie and Martine
are trained investigators.
00:13:31.959 --> 00:13:32.584
And in East Timor,
00:13:32.585 --> 00:13:35.998
they will have an opportunity
to demonstrate their skills.
00:13:35.999 --> 00:13:37.249
In early May,
00:13:37.250 --> 00:13:39.458
on a quiet beach
outside of Dili,
00:13:39.459 --> 00:13:42.208
U.N. soldier Orlando Kosney
and Embassy attaché
00:13:42.209 --> 00:13:45.998
Sophia Caron are attacked
by a gang of men.
00:13:45.999 --> 00:13:48.416
It\'s the most terrifying case
00:13:48.417 --> 00:13:49.998
to hit the Dili newspapers
in a year.
00:13:49.999 --> 00:13:53.998
And Debbie Doyle is assigned
lead investigator.
00:13:53.999 --> 00:13:57.208
- The attack
was extremely brutal.
00:13:57.209 --> 00:14:03.041
It was so brutal, it just kept
going and getting worse.
00:14:03.042 --> 00:14:06.998
- Well, we were in the car
on the beach
00:14:06.999 --> 00:14:09.998
and then, then they came up
with flashlights
00:14:09.999 --> 00:14:12.124
and started yelling and then,
throwing stuff.
00:14:12.125 --> 00:14:14.998
Orlando was yelling at them
in Portuguese to go away.
00:14:14.999 --> 00:14:17.166
Then they started
trying to hit him
00:14:17.167 --> 00:14:19.666
through the window,
which was open.
00:14:19.667 --> 00:14:22.082
- There are cuts and marks
on the vehicle.
00:14:22.083 --> 00:14:25.750
The witnesses heard chopping
wood and it would\'ve been...
00:14:25.751 --> 00:14:30.082
on this vehicle; these two cuts
as well as on the one victim
00:14:30.083 --> 00:14:32.541
when he was being cut up
with the machete.
00:14:32.542 --> 00:14:36.625
- I saw him covered with blood.
He was yelling at me for help.
00:14:36.626 --> 00:14:38.124
Then I realized
00:14:38.125 --> 00:14:39.083
they weren\'t just punching him,
00:14:39.084 --> 00:14:42.998
Orlando had yelled at me to run
and he\'s trying to run with me,
00:14:42.999 --> 00:14:44.999
and he fell over and said,
\"They\'ve broken my legs.\"
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:49.208
They ran after me
and they caught up with me,
00:14:49.209 --> 00:14:51.998
\'cause I didn\'t have shoes on
or anything.
00:14:51.999 --> 00:14:53.708
And I was yelling at them, like,
00:14:53.709 --> 00:14:56.124
\"Don\'t do this,
you\'re gonna be in big trouble.\"
00:14:56.125 --> 00:14:57.625
Then they told me to shut up
00:14:57.626 --> 00:14:59.666
and hit me over the head
with the machete.
00:14:59.667 --> 00:15:03.166
- This is basically
the full-on facial shot
00:15:03.167 --> 00:15:06.374
where she was cut,
how deep it went,
00:15:06.375 --> 00:15:08.541
and the condition of her face.
00:15:08.542 --> 00:15:12.541
The machete
actually cut right down,
00:15:12.542 --> 00:15:14.791
right down to her cheeks.
00:15:14.792 --> 00:15:15.501
They dragged her in here,
00:15:15.502 --> 00:15:18.583
and said if she didn\'t have sex
with them, they\'d kill her.
00:15:18.584 --> 00:15:24.082
So each one of them
sexually assaulted her.
00:15:24.083 --> 00:15:25.500
- Didn\'t you want to leave?
00:15:25.501 --> 00:15:29.374
When all this was finished,
didn\'t you want to go back,
00:15:29.375 --> 00:15:31.208
live in Australia
and never come back?
00:15:31.209 --> 00:15:35.041
- I liked my life here.
I just sort of thought of them
00:15:35.042 --> 00:15:37.249
as, you know,
a violent group of idiots.
00:15:37.250 --> 00:15:39.875
They could\'ve been anywhere,
in Australia or...
00:15:39.876 --> 00:15:41.666
- She\'s a very strong lady.
00:15:41.667 --> 00:15:43.999
The attack hasn\'t phased her,
it hasn\'t made her negative
00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:46.998
in regards to the East Timorese
people or East Timor.
00:15:46.999 --> 00:15:49.998
She\'s still gonna be here
for over another year,
00:15:49.999 --> 00:15:51.998
working here in East Timor.
00:15:51.999 --> 00:15:53.374
So I give a lot of credit.
00:15:53.375 --> 00:15:55.998
I don\'t know if I could\'ve done
what she did.
00:15:55.999 --> 00:15:59.792
I think I\'d probably
would\'ve wanted to go home.
00:16:03.918 --> 00:16:06.833
(narrator): The perpetrators
are arrested, but the case
00:16:06.834 --> 00:16:09.208
sends a shockwave through
the international community.
00:16:09.209 --> 00:16:13.917
The U.N. advises foreigners
to exercise extreme caution.
00:16:13.918 --> 00:16:18.999
And every off-duty CIVPOL
officer now carries a gun.
00:16:20.999 --> 00:16:24.458
These officers know
that it could get worse.
00:16:24.459 --> 00:16:27.998
Tomorrow is Independence Day.
00:16:27.999 --> 00:16:30.999
If things go wrong,
they could be on the frontline
00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:33.999
in a violent confrontation.
00:16:42.375 --> 00:16:45.541
The East Timorese
are getting impatient
00:16:45.542 --> 00:16:48.458
with the slow rate
of social change.
00:16:48.459 --> 00:16:49.000
In a country
00:16:49.001 --> 00:16:52.666
where most families earn less
than two dollars a day,
00:16:52.667 --> 00:16:55.791
and youth unemployment tops 80%,
00:16:55.792 --> 00:16:59.834
rich foreigners are easy targets
for social rage.
00:17:13.334 --> 00:17:16.541
For the past few days,
foreign dignitaries
00:17:16.542 --> 00:17:19.583
like Kofi Annan and Bill Clinton
have been converging
00:17:19.584 --> 00:17:22.583
on Dili for the Independence Day
celebration.
00:17:22.584 --> 00:17:24.833
When it arrives,
00:17:24.834 --> 00:17:28.998
every police officer
is on 24-hour patrol.
00:17:28.999 --> 00:17:32.500
And that includes
Debbie and Martine.
00:17:32.501 --> 00:17:34.333
This is Debbie\'s
last official duty here.
00:17:34.334 --> 00:17:37.374
To up the challenge
and see more of the country,
00:17:37.375 --> 00:17:40.791
she\'s asked to serve
in some of the most remote
00:17:40.792 --> 00:17:43.500
and dangerous areas
on the island.
00:17:43.501 --> 00:17:45.166
Her request has been granted.
00:17:45.167 --> 00:17:48.208
- This is bad.
Why am I working with her?
00:17:48.209 --> 00:17:50.998
She\'s a good investigator.
00:17:50.999 --> 00:17:52.998
She gives
me good English lessons.
00:17:52.999 --> 00:17:55.416
- And you give me
good French lessons.
00:17:55.417 --> 00:17:56.000
(laughter)
00:17:56.001 --> 00:18:00.416
(narrator): Today, Debbie and
Martine will work crowd-control.
00:18:00.417 --> 00:18:03.333
Despite U.N. concerns
about mob violence,
00:18:03.334 --> 00:18:04.500
Debbie is optimistic.
00:18:04.501 --> 00:18:06.750
- I think it\'s gonna be
fairly peaceful.
00:18:06.751 --> 00:18:09.416
I think
if there\'s gonna be violence,
00:18:09.417 --> 00:18:12.998
it\'ll be in three to six months,
when...
00:18:12.999 --> 00:18:17.166
The people have expected things
and if things don\'t come about,
00:18:17.167 --> 00:18:19.541
if the quality of life
doesn\'t get better,
00:18:19.542 --> 00:18:22.417
I think then
we\'ll have to worry.
00:18:53.709 --> 00:18:56.584
(speech in foreign language)
00:19:05.751 --> 00:19:07.959
(cheering)
00:19:19.250 --> 00:19:21.998
(narrator): Debbie\'s prediction
turns out to be accurate.
00:19:21.999 --> 00:19:26.125
Not a single act of violence
mars the celebration.
00:19:26.999 --> 00:19:30.750
But as she and the people
of Dili will soon discover,
00:19:30.751 --> 00:19:32.998
the ghosts
of Timor\'s violent past
00:19:32.999 --> 00:19:35.626
have not been laid to rest.
00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:56.500
Adapting to a different culture
is never easy.
00:19:56.501 --> 00:19:59.416
But by early July,
Martine has settled in.
00:19:59.417 --> 00:20:01.998
A close friendship
with Maria Da Silva,
00:20:01.999 --> 00:20:05.998
her commanding officer
at the Vulnerable Persons Unit,
00:20:05.999 --> 00:20:09.124
has eased the transition.
00:20:09.125 --> 00:20:12.791
- What you learn in a mission
00:20:12.792 --> 00:20:15.166
is something that...
human experience
00:20:15.167 --> 00:20:17.625
and human knowledge
that you get for yourself
00:20:17.626 --> 00:20:23.667
as a human being that you can
never learn if you stay at home.
00:20:25.626 --> 00:20:28.374
I think, like me,
she learns a lot.
00:20:28.375 --> 00:20:30.998
Day by day, I got experience.
00:20:30.999 --> 00:20:33.500
For her, it was the same thing.
00:20:33.501 --> 00:20:35.541
She got experience,
00:20:35.542 --> 00:20:36.958
she became more...
00:20:36.959 --> 00:20:40.208
she adapted herself
to the situation,
00:20:40.209 --> 00:20:42.374
as a human being,
as a police officer.
00:20:42.375 --> 00:20:46.999
I think she learns a lot.
Just like me.
00:20:48.209 --> 00:20:51.998
- I\'m quite a fast person.
I do everything
00:20:51.999 --> 00:20:55.166
really fast and I like
when everything goes fast.
00:20:55.167 --> 00:20:57.416
And people are so slow here.
00:20:57.417 --> 00:20:59.791
Taking their time,
00:20:59.792 --> 00:21:02.625
traffic jams...
00:21:02.626 --> 00:21:04.666
Nobody\'s in a hurry,
00:21:04.667 --> 00:21:07.998
taxis stop all over the place...
00:21:07.999 --> 00:21:11.541
Everything...
I had to get used to this.
00:21:11.542 --> 00:21:13.124
That was another thing, also.
00:21:13.125 --> 00:21:17.999
I had to get used,
I had to... slow down a bit.
00:21:19.959 --> 00:21:25.458
I was stressed out because
nobody was going fast enough.
00:21:25.459 --> 00:21:28.417
Hey!
00:21:29.999 --> 00:21:33.998
- You know,
during the last two months,
00:21:33.999 --> 00:21:36.166
12 robberies.
00:21:36.167 --> 00:21:38.666
(narrator): Tonight,
00:21:38.667 --> 00:21:41.208
Martine will work decoy
on a robbery case.
00:21:41.209 --> 00:21:43.249
- These guys
that are gonna walk here,
00:21:43.250 --> 00:21:45.291
are they gonna follow me
all the time?
00:21:45.292 --> 00:21:47.249
- Yes.
- So they\'re gonna be here also.
00:21:47.250 --> 00:21:49.708
(narrator):
Over the past few months,
00:21:49.709 --> 00:21:52.249
her reputation has grown.
There are rumours
00:21:52.250 --> 00:21:55.999
she will take over
the Vulnerable Persons Unit
00:21:56.000 --> 00:21:58.998
when Maria Da Silva
returns to Portugal.
00:21:58.999 --> 00:22:03.917
Since Independence Day, tensions
in the city have been mounting.
00:22:03.918 --> 00:22:04.751
The Hello Mister store
00:22:04.752 --> 00:22:07.708
is the only supermarket
of its kind in Dili.
00:22:07.709 --> 00:22:11.999
Most of the people attacked here
have been foreigners.
00:22:15.250 --> 00:22:17.958
They won\'t catch
the thieves tonight,
00:22:17.959 --> 00:22:19.458
but Martine makes an I.D.
00:22:19.459 --> 00:22:21.998
that eventually leads
to an arrest.
00:22:21.999 --> 00:22:24.249
- When I came out
of Hello Mister,
00:22:24.250 --> 00:22:25.791
there was an Audi...
00:22:25.792 --> 00:22:28.791
with one guy sitting
in the back, with a cap,
00:22:28.792 --> 00:22:32.208
and I thought that
they were waiting for me.
00:22:32.209 --> 00:22:35.417
I was sure to see them again.
00:22:47.999 --> 00:22:49.998
(narrator): Investigating crime
is never easy,
00:22:49.999 --> 00:22:53.541
but it\'s doubly difficult
on a mission like this.
00:22:53.542 --> 00:22:56.708
Working with a translator,
00:22:56.709 --> 00:23:00.291
being sensitive
to local customs...
00:23:00.292 --> 00:23:04.250
Just getting to a crime scene
can be a major challenge.
00:23:05.167 --> 00:23:08.998
- Here, there\'s no addresses.
\"He lives on this street.\"
00:23:08.999 --> 00:23:10.416
\"Okay, where?\"
\"I don\'t know.\"
00:23:10.417 --> 00:23:15.416
So we have to get an interpreter
to translate what\'s going on,
00:23:15.417 --> 00:23:17.998
and we have to get the victim
also in the car
00:23:17.999 --> 00:23:21.458
to get the suspect, because
we don\'t know where he lives.
00:23:21.459 --> 00:23:24.333
(speaking Tetum)
00:23:24.334 --> 00:23:27.998
(narrator): A woman has reported
being attacked by her husband
00:23:27.999 --> 00:23:30.998
and Martine is here
to make the arrest.
00:23:30.999 --> 00:23:33.333
- She\'s okay with this?
(narrator): In Canada,
00:23:33.334 --> 00:23:35.374
a victim would never confront
her assailant.
00:23:35.375 --> 00:23:39.374
Here in Timor,
things are a little different.
00:23:39.375 --> 00:23:42.082
- Tell her Monday morning.
00:23:42.083 --> 00:23:45.626
Eight o\'clock.
00:23:47.125 --> 00:23:50.833
The first cases that I had,
the victim was in the car,
00:23:50.834 --> 00:23:51.834
showing me
00:23:51.835 --> 00:23:54.374
where the suspect was living,
getting the guy,
00:23:54.375 --> 00:23:56.998
putting him in right beside her
in the car.
00:23:56.999 --> 00:24:01.541
(narrator): The system for
dealing with less severe crimes
00:24:01.542 --> 00:24:02.583
is also new.
00:24:02.584 --> 00:24:04.958
But it\'s an approach
Martine admires.
00:24:04.959 --> 00:24:08.791
- When it\'s not a really bad
case, we just do mediation.
00:24:08.792 --> 00:24:11.998
They sign a paper
that is saying,
00:24:11.999 --> 00:24:14.333
\"I\'m not gonna hit
my wife again.
00:24:14.334 --> 00:24:16.291
I promise
to do this, this, this,\"
00:24:16.292 --> 00:24:19.333
and they sign and they get
their fingerprints on the paper,
00:24:19.334 --> 00:24:20.458
and both of them have that paper
00:24:20.459 --> 00:24:23.875
and everybody goes home,
everybody\'s happy about that.
00:24:23.876 --> 00:24:27.833
And it works. I don\'t know for
how many years it\'s gonna work,
00:24:27.834 --> 00:24:29.667
but for now it works.
00:24:42.709 --> 00:24:44.291
(narrator): While Martine
stays in Dili,
00:24:44.292 --> 00:24:48.750
Debbie heads to the southwest
corner of the island.
00:24:48.751 --> 00:24:51.249
A mountain pass
00:24:51.250 --> 00:24:53.833
and miles of unpaved road
now separate her
00:24:53.834 --> 00:24:57.917
from her husband and the rest
of the Canadian contingent.
00:24:57.918 --> 00:25:00.416
Until the end of the mission,
00:25:00.417 --> 00:25:03.249
Debbie will live and work
in Suai,
00:25:03.250 --> 00:25:05.999
one of the most dangerous areas
in East Timor.
00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:10.082
Over the next four months,
a video camera
00:25:10.083 --> 00:25:12.124
will be her closest friend.
00:25:12.125 --> 00:25:12.999
- First day of work,
00:25:13.000 --> 00:25:16.458
there was a death reported
in one of the villages...
00:25:16.459 --> 00:25:18.999
We have been ordered to...
00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:22.374
wear our guns 24 hours a day,
in uniform, out of uniform.
00:25:22.375 --> 00:25:24.917
It\'s kind of funny, you know,
wearing \"civvy\" clothes
00:25:24.918 --> 00:25:27.917
and you\'ve got your gun belt
strapped on to walk around.
00:25:27.918 --> 00:25:30.998
It\'s just shit that\'s happened
at the squad station.
00:25:30.999 --> 00:25:33.998
A couple of weeks
before I got here,
00:25:33.999 --> 00:25:35.875
there was a big siege on it,
00:25:35.876 --> 00:25:40.292
and, uh... a lot of problems.
A lot of problems.
00:25:41.959 --> 00:25:44.166
She found him?
00:25:44.167 --> 00:25:46.833
(narrator): A body
has been found
00:25:46.834 --> 00:25:48.166
near a local village.
00:25:48.167 --> 00:25:50.416
Debbie and her team
must determine
00:25:50.417 --> 00:25:53.082
if it\'s murder
or death by natural causes.
00:25:53.083 --> 00:25:57.249
The case offers
a good opportunity to coach
00:25:57.250 --> 00:26:00.249
local officers
on crime-scene investigation.
00:26:00.250 --> 00:26:03.708
- We\'ve got... Actually,
it\'d probably be like this,
00:26:03.709 --> 00:26:06.124
so you\'ve rigor mortis
in the arm
00:26:06.125 --> 00:26:07.875
that\'s settled in.
00:26:07.876 --> 00:26:12.375
But on him, there is something.
Yeah, possibly blood.
00:26:13.999 --> 00:26:15.249
Most likely natural causes.
00:26:15.250 --> 00:26:18.082
There\'s no evidence
of foul play,
00:26:18.083 --> 00:26:19.666
no other problems.
00:26:19.667 --> 00:26:22.999
See if he can contact
the prosecutor.
00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:26.208
(narrator): Thorough,
patient and compassionate.
00:26:26.209 --> 00:26:27.998
Debbie isn\'t just a good cop,
00:26:27.999 --> 00:26:32.334
she\'s also a great mentor
for the local police.
00:26:35.125 --> 00:26:38.625
- Here in Suai, I\'ve had
a really good relationship
00:26:38.626 --> 00:26:40.998
with the ETPS,
both female ETPS and males.
00:26:40.999 --> 00:26:43.958
They still wanna say
Madam Debbie
00:26:43.959 --> 00:26:47.416
or Miss Debbie.
They look at me
00:26:47.417 --> 00:26:49.750
and I\'m trying to instill
in them that no,
00:26:49.751 --> 00:26:50.998
I\'m not their commander,
I\'m their equal.
00:26:50.999 --> 00:26:53.333
I\'m in the background.
They\'re the police officer.
00:26:53.334 --> 00:26:55.082
I\'m supervising
or I\'m observing.
00:26:55.083 --> 00:26:57.333
I\'m trying to help.
00:26:57.334 --> 00:26:59.998
I don\'t want to be looked at
as a commander
00:26:59.999 --> 00:27:02.542
or boss or anything like that.
00:27:04.999 --> 00:27:05.999
(narrator): Debbie\'s approach
00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:08.666
has won the hearts
of the East Timorese Police.
00:27:08.667 --> 00:27:12.041
And that includes two officers
from her last posting,
00:27:12.042 --> 00:27:16.834
who\'ve shown up
for a surprise visit.
00:27:47.667 --> 00:27:54.917
- You know that there are
almost 4,500 applicants
00:27:54.918 --> 00:27:58.708
for 100 positions in ETPS.
00:27:58.709 --> 00:27:59.998
(narrator): In late July,
00:27:59.999 --> 00:28:03.291
Martine takes over
as head of VPU.
00:28:03.292 --> 00:28:04.998
The only woman in her area
00:28:04.999 --> 00:28:06.998
to hold a senior position
with CIVPOL.
00:28:06.999 --> 00:28:10.750
In August, after five months
of gruelling work,
00:28:10.751 --> 00:28:13.998
she heads to Portugal
for a holiday.
00:28:13.999 --> 00:28:17.082
There, she receives tragic news.
00:28:17.083 --> 00:28:19.998
- I left here for 18 days.
00:28:19.999 --> 00:28:24.124
I was going to Portugal.
I was in a shopping centre
00:28:24.125 --> 00:28:26.291
and I just decided
to call my mom.
00:28:26.292 --> 00:28:29.666
She said, \"You\'d better
come home.\" I said, \"Why?
00:28:29.667 --> 00:28:31.666
Home? What for?
00:28:31.667 --> 00:28:33.917
I\'m on holiday now,
I cannot come home.\"
00:28:33.918 --> 00:28:37.917
And she said,
\"Well, something happened
00:28:37.918 --> 00:28:39.208
to Daddy.\"
00:28:39.209 --> 00:28:42.374
I said, \"What happened?
An accident? Is he dead?
00:28:42.375 --> 00:28:43.500
What happened?
A car accident?\"
00:28:43.501 --> 00:28:47.999
And she was very vague. She
wouldn\'t tell me any details.
00:28:48.542 --> 00:28:52.166
So my father died
in a tractor accident.
00:28:52.167 --> 00:28:54.791
He was working on a road
00:28:54.792 --> 00:28:59.124
and he fell off
in a very steep ditch
00:28:59.125 --> 00:29:01.625
and it rolled over him.
00:29:01.626 --> 00:29:04.583
My father, uh....
00:29:04.584 --> 00:29:06.958
he was very proud of me,
of course,
00:29:06.959 --> 00:29:10.166
and he said to me one day,
\"If we can leave the house,
00:29:10.167 --> 00:29:12.791
we\'re gonna go and see you
in East Timor
00:29:12.792 --> 00:29:13.584
for your medal parade.\"
00:29:13.585 --> 00:29:17.458
In a kind of way, I was really,
that day, emotional,
00:29:17.459 --> 00:29:19.958
\'cause I thought
that he was there.
00:29:19.959 --> 00:29:23.708
For sure, he saw me. For sure.
00:29:23.709 --> 00:29:26.998
I can feel it.
00:29:26.999 --> 00:29:30.249
At that time, it was beautiful.
00:29:30.250 --> 00:29:32.999
I had a hard time
when the national anthem played,
00:29:33.000 --> 00:29:37.751
but I\'m pretty sure
that he was there.
00:29:40.834 --> 00:29:43.999
He\'s very proud of me,
I\'m pretty sure.
00:29:46.334 --> 00:29:48.124
I\'m not the same person,
of course.
00:29:48.125 --> 00:29:51.666
For sure, for sure, I\'m not
the same person that I was
00:29:51.667 --> 00:29:53.999
when I was in induction training
in Ottawa.
00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:57.999
I\'m completely different...
00:29:58.000 --> 00:30:01.041
My patience has changed,
00:30:01.042 --> 00:30:03.998
I think I....
00:30:03.999 --> 00:30:05.333
maturity also.
00:30:05.334 --> 00:30:08.082
(narrator): Unlike Debbie,
00:30:08.083 --> 00:30:11.416
Martine has worked in one unit
for the entire mission.
00:30:11.417 --> 00:30:14.998
Familiarity breeds
strong attachments,
00:30:14.999 --> 00:30:19.998
so Martine has requested
to extend her tour of duty.
00:30:19.999 --> 00:30:21.625
- I thought that maybe, uh...
00:30:21.626 --> 00:30:24.998
I would stay low-profile,
but that\'s not what happened.
00:30:24.999 --> 00:30:28.998
I just... Boom!
I\'m in the first line.
00:30:28.999 --> 00:30:31.209
And I like it.
00:30:49.584 --> 00:30:50.998
(narrator): Back in Suai,
00:30:50.999 --> 00:30:53.791
temperatures reach
50 degrees Celsius,
00:30:53.792 --> 00:30:55.166
as Debbie moves in
00:30:55.167 --> 00:30:58.333
with a group of CIVPOLS
from Australia.
00:30:58.334 --> 00:31:02.334
The living conditions
come as a bit of a shock.
00:31:03.999 --> 00:31:04.999
- I\'m the odd man out.
00:31:05.000 --> 00:31:06.958
Everybody\'s Australian;
this is the Aussie house.
00:31:06.959 --> 00:31:11.416
Eight people, one bathroom...
Which is a toilet...
00:31:11.417 --> 00:31:14.998
And one shower
and everybody has to share.
00:31:14.999 --> 00:31:15.999
So it\'s not home.
00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:19.875
It\'s definitely not like home.
It is home.
00:31:19.876 --> 00:31:21.291
I mean, it has to be home.
00:31:21.292 --> 00:31:24.833
It\'s not like home where
personal space is abundant.
00:31:24.834 --> 00:31:26.291
There is no personal space here.
00:31:26.292 --> 00:31:28.750
I live in a tent.
It\'s a mosquito tent.
00:31:28.751 --> 00:31:30.500
It\'s hot, it\'s humid.
00:31:30.501 --> 00:31:33.249
I have my clothes in there
so they don\'t get infested
00:31:33.250 --> 00:31:38.583
with bugs and scorpions
and spiders and other creatures.
00:31:38.584 --> 00:31:40.541
And snakes.
00:31:40.542 --> 00:31:43.917
This mission is so different
than home life.
00:31:43.918 --> 00:31:47.333
From the simplest thing
like trees and grass
00:31:47.334 --> 00:31:48.250
and fruits and vegetables,
00:31:48.251 --> 00:31:51.583
to the weather, to the people,
to the customs, to everything.
00:31:51.584 --> 00:31:55.541
Nothing here is the same
as it is back home. Nothing.
00:31:55.542 --> 00:31:59.208
Did you see the snail?
- Yes, I did.
00:31:59.209 --> 00:32:00.998
That means that we need
00:32:00.999 --> 00:32:04.124
to clean the mould
in the shower.
00:32:04.125 --> 00:32:05.750
(laughter)
00:32:05.751 --> 00:32:07.999
- She\'s like an honorary
Australian, I guess.
00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:11.583
I see her a bit like
a protector, in a way.
00:32:11.584 --> 00:32:13.875
Because
she\'s a very strong person.
00:32:13.876 --> 00:32:14.792
We had a period just recently
00:32:14.793 --> 00:32:17.124
where all the guys in the house
all went on holidays.
00:32:17.125 --> 00:32:20.208
Belinda and I have trouble
starting the generator.
00:32:20.209 --> 00:32:23.166
We\'re just not strong enough.
It pisses us off,
00:32:23.167 --> 00:32:27.583
because we can\'t pull the cord
hard enough to get it started.
00:32:27.584 --> 00:32:28.998
So, we thought,
Well, that\'s okay,
00:32:28.999 --> 00:32:32.875
\'cause Debbie\'s there and
Debbie will be able to do it.
00:32:32.876 --> 00:32:33.999
She can do anything.
00:32:34.000 --> 00:32:36.791
She skins animals
and goes hunting
00:32:36.792 --> 00:32:38.500
and all sorts of stuff.
00:32:38.501 --> 00:32:42.292
So surely
she can start a generator.
00:32:51.999 --> 00:32:55.082
(narrator): Suai borders
on the Indonesian province
00:32:55.083 --> 00:32:56.124
of West Timor,
00:32:56.125 --> 00:33:00.625
the area where the Indonesian
army and the militia fled
00:33:00.626 --> 00:33:01.998
in 1999.
00:33:01.999 --> 00:33:03.249
Guns, contraband,
00:33:03.250 --> 00:33:05.998
and militiamen
still cross this border.
00:33:05.999 --> 00:33:10.917
A border that continues
to shift its boundaries.
00:33:10.918 --> 00:33:13.708
- Yeah, the situation here
is a bit different.
00:33:13.709 --> 00:33:16.791
This is a lot more
established here.
00:33:16.792 --> 00:33:19.124
The relationship
that we have with them
00:33:19.125 --> 00:33:21.374
is also quite cordial.
00:33:21.375 --> 00:33:24.041
So we can be as close as this.
00:33:24.042 --> 00:33:27.166
Where we\'re literally just
the length of the river away.
00:33:27.167 --> 00:33:29.750
It\'s pretty much a traditional
border, but yeah,
00:33:29.751 --> 00:33:33.333
still significant parts of it
that are up for dispute.
00:33:33.334 --> 00:33:35.998
Periodically, it does change.
00:33:35.999 --> 00:33:38.998
We have meetings
with the Indonesians
00:33:38.999 --> 00:33:40.500
and it does move.
00:33:40.501 --> 00:33:43.458
So at this stage,
before it gets officially
00:33:43.459 --> 00:33:45.998
sanctioned as a border,
00:33:45.999 --> 00:33:48.082
it\'s still very, very fluid.
00:33:48.083 --> 00:33:50.666
(narrator):
One of the rural areas
00:33:50.667 --> 00:33:53.082
that suffered most
under Indonesian rule,
00:33:53.083 --> 00:33:55.541
Suai was also a site
of a brutal massacre.
00:33:55.542 --> 00:33:59.998
In 1999, after their homes
were burned down by the militia,
00:33:59.999 --> 00:34:03.208
local villagers
sought refuge here,
00:34:03.209 --> 00:34:06.082
at the Ave Maria Church.
00:34:06.083 --> 00:34:09.041
On September 6th,
00:34:09.042 --> 00:34:12.208
militiamen armed with guns
and machetes
00:34:12.209 --> 00:34:14.458
drove into the churchyard.
00:34:14.459 --> 00:34:17.249
Eye-witnesses claimed
that 30 people...
00:34:17.250 --> 00:34:19.875
Men, women and children...
00:34:19.876 --> 00:34:23.375
Were killed that day.
00:34:28.709 --> 00:34:29.998
- This is the spot
00:34:29.999 --> 00:34:32.917
where the people who
were killed in the church,
00:34:32.918 --> 00:34:35.041
where the bodies were brought
out to for burning.
00:34:35.042 --> 00:34:38.708
A very sort of half-hearted
attempt to conceal
the evidence...
00:34:38.709 --> 00:34:42.625
The militia came from
the other side of the church.
00:34:42.626 --> 00:34:44.249
Came up the bank, towards it,
00:34:44.250 --> 00:34:46.791
and the priests went outside
to speak with them.
00:34:46.792 --> 00:34:50.833
And the militia killed
all three of the priests.
00:34:50.834 --> 00:34:53.998
Just on the other side of the
church, they\'ve marked the spot.
00:34:53.999 --> 00:34:55.998
Militia then
went into the church,
00:34:55.999 --> 00:34:59.082
and basically,
they shot and... killed...
00:34:59.083 --> 00:35:03.166
They used machetes and knives,
etc. as well...
00:35:03.167 --> 00:35:05.625
Some 28 people in there,
00:35:05.626 --> 00:35:08.374
before dragging their bodies
out here
00:35:08.375 --> 00:35:11.666
and partially burning them.
00:35:11.667 --> 00:35:13.500
- And this ring?
00:35:13.501 --> 00:35:15.998
- The ring around here is...
00:35:15.999 --> 00:35:18.500
the fat, human fat,
from the burning.
00:35:18.501 --> 00:35:22.500
They\'ve never been able to
remove the stain that was left.
00:35:22.501 --> 00:35:25.333
I think it serves as a...
00:35:25.334 --> 00:35:28.458
nice silent reminder
of exactly what took place here
00:35:28.459 --> 00:35:30.291
and that it\'s fairly grizzly.
00:35:30.292 --> 00:35:31.999
- Sometimes I still wonder
how people
00:35:32.000 --> 00:35:34.708
can do this to each other.
It\'s just disgusting.
00:35:34.709 --> 00:35:38.249
How they do this to their fellow
human beings, you know?
00:35:38.250 --> 00:35:39.998
They treat them like animals
or worse.
00:35:39.999 --> 00:35:42.583
I mean, you wouldn\'t even
do that to the animals.
00:35:42.584 --> 00:35:45.541
You wouldn\'t hack them to death
with a machete.
00:35:45.542 --> 00:35:46.625
You\'d kill them outright.
00:35:46.626 --> 00:35:50.998
You just wouldn\'t do the
atrocities that were done here.
00:35:50.999 --> 00:35:55.876
It\'s, uh... it\'s just awful.
Just awful.
00:36:02.083 --> 00:36:04.333
- The girl we\'re going to see
00:36:04.334 --> 00:36:06.291
is Maria Mendoza.
00:36:06.292 --> 00:36:08.124
She\'s a 15-year-old girl
00:36:08.125 --> 00:36:11.082
that was pregnant by her father.
00:36:11.083 --> 00:36:16.501
Her father is in jail right now.
00:36:18.584 --> 00:36:21.542
She got her baby two weeks ago.
00:36:23.792 --> 00:36:25.999
Oh!
00:36:27.334 --> 00:36:28.458
During two years,
00:36:28.459 --> 00:36:30.998
she was assaulted,
sexually assaulted,
00:36:30.999 --> 00:36:33.999
14 times by her father.
00:36:34.834 --> 00:36:37.999
She got pregnant and she didn\'t
want to tell anybody.
00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:38.959
Nobody was aware of this.
00:36:38.960 --> 00:36:41.998
They don\'t want to talk about
it; they\'re ashamed of this.
00:36:41.999 --> 00:36:43.998
They don\'t want anybody
to know what\'s going on,
00:36:43.999 --> 00:36:46.998
because the girl is supposed
to be a virgin when she marries
00:36:46.999 --> 00:36:49.583
And if she\'s not,
it\'s a shame on the family.
00:36:49.584 --> 00:36:51.998
The father is still in jail.
00:36:51.999 --> 00:36:53.249
He\'s detained since April.
00:36:53.250 --> 00:36:55.416
This is terrible,
\'cause he was the one
00:36:55.417 --> 00:36:57.998
who was bringing food
and the money here.
00:36:57.999 --> 00:36:59.625
He was the one who was working.
00:36:59.626 --> 00:37:04.250
Now I don\'t know who\'s
supporting all the family.
00:37:05.542 --> 00:37:07.541
She\'s so small, she\'s so little.
00:37:07.542 --> 00:37:10.333
She\'s a kid! She\'s still a kid.
00:37:10.334 --> 00:37:14.708
People here have respect
for police officers.
00:37:14.709 --> 00:37:17.166
They like you,
they want to talk to you,
00:37:17.167 --> 00:37:18.167
they want to touch you,
00:37:18.168 --> 00:37:20.124
they want to be with you
all the time.
00:37:20.125 --> 00:37:24.334
The kids are smiling all the
time, following you everywhere.
00:37:25.667 --> 00:37:28.334
You don\'t have this in Montreal.
00:37:29.584 --> 00:37:32.291
In Montreal, you would see...
00:37:32.292 --> 00:37:34.249
If you see this,
00:37:34.250 --> 00:37:37.998
the family would be crying
and would be so angry.
00:37:37.999 --> 00:37:40.708
And the girl would be,
like, devastated.
00:37:40.709 --> 00:37:43.082
But here,
she\'s just siting there,
00:37:43.083 --> 00:37:44.791
she\'s just not talking, smiling.
00:37:44.792 --> 00:37:48.416
I don\'t like to say this,
but it\'s like it\'s normal.
00:37:48.417 --> 00:37:51.458
Something happened,
yeah, big deal.
00:37:51.459 --> 00:37:54.416
We can\'t tell
that she\'s really, really hurt.
00:37:54.417 --> 00:37:57.791
She\'s just sitting there, she
lives in her own little world
00:37:57.792 --> 00:38:01.999
and everything seems so normal.
00:38:03.918 --> 00:38:05.541
I feel so sorry for her.
00:38:05.542 --> 00:38:09.998
But I feel like I\'m more hurt
than she is.
00:38:09.999 --> 00:38:11.291
I think... I can\'t remember
00:38:11.292 --> 00:38:13.958
seeing one girl
that had been raped,
00:38:13.959 --> 00:38:16.542
telling me the story and crying.
00:38:17.334 --> 00:38:20.958
I think people are so used
to suffering here.
00:38:20.959 --> 00:38:23.124
So this is nothing.
Nothing worth...
00:38:23.125 --> 00:38:26.000
Nobody was killed...
00:39:00.918 --> 00:39:02.124
- I wound up getting...
00:39:02.125 --> 00:39:05.833
either a parasite or worms
or some... something.
00:39:05.834 --> 00:39:08.998
I don\'t know yet,
they still haven\'t diagnosed it.
00:39:08.999 --> 00:39:10.291
Which is not a good thing.
00:39:10.292 --> 00:39:14.333
So I was put on three different
types of medication for that.
00:39:14.334 --> 00:39:15.833
Worm topic.
00:39:15.834 --> 00:39:19.625
Sick. I was sick every day,
nauseous.
00:39:19.626 --> 00:39:22.291
When I was sleeping, I wasn\'t
nauseous until I woke up.
00:39:22.292 --> 00:39:24.458
I was nauseous
even during the night.
00:39:24.459 --> 00:39:26.998
I always felt
like I was gonna vomit.
00:39:26.999 --> 00:39:29.249
I didn\'t really want
to eat much.
00:39:29.250 --> 00:39:32.666
When I did eat, I\'d start eating
and then I\'d feel full.
00:39:32.667 --> 00:39:33.791
I just... It wasn\'t good.
00:39:33.792 --> 00:39:37.041
I was kind of hoping that it was
a tapeworm or something,
00:39:37.042 --> 00:39:39.998
\'cause then I could eat a lot,
it wouldn\'t matter.
00:39:39.999 --> 00:39:44.082
The whole worm thing was not
something that I was used to.
00:39:44.083 --> 00:39:45.750
What I wound up doing...
00:39:45.751 --> 00:39:47.998
I think I\'ve been in mission
too long...
00:39:47.999 --> 00:39:49.998
I wound up naming my worms.
00:39:49.999 --> 00:39:52.999
Just... just as a... a thing.
00:39:59.250 --> 00:40:01.166
(narrator):
Still sick and exhausted,
00:40:01.167 --> 00:40:05.291
Debbie leaves Suai for a holiday
in early October.
00:40:05.292 --> 00:40:07.666
She meets her husband Dan
in Dili.
00:40:07.667 --> 00:40:09.998
From there,
they\'ll travel to China
00:40:09.999 --> 00:40:12.833
and onto the South Sea island
of Bali.
00:40:12.834 --> 00:40:16.458
A week later, a bomb goes off
in a Bali nightclub.
00:40:16.459 --> 00:40:19.208
(reporter): Just hours ago,
this was a nightclub.
00:40:19.209 --> 00:40:22.374
Favourite haunt of tourists
in the holiday resort
00:40:22.375 --> 00:40:23.416
of Kuta Beach.
00:40:23.417 --> 00:40:26.374
Firefighters, unable to douse
the blaze at the Sari Club,
00:40:26.375 --> 00:40:30.998
are still unclear how many
died here after the blast...
00:40:30.999 --> 00:40:35.583
(narrator): Islamic militants
from Indonesia take credit.
00:40:35.584 --> 00:40:36.998
And Osama bin Laden
00:40:36.999 --> 00:40:39.958
orders the U.N.
to give East Timor
00:40:39.959 --> 00:40:42.458
back to Indonesia.
00:40:42.459 --> 00:40:45.791
At this point, no one
in the Canadian contingent
00:40:45.792 --> 00:40:48.124
knows where Debbie is.
00:40:48.125 --> 00:40:52.998
- Our hotel was just a short
hopskip and a jump
00:40:52.999 --> 00:40:53.918
from the bomb blast.
00:40:53.919 --> 00:40:57.998
And we went there to see it
and pay our respects.
00:40:57.999 --> 00:41:00.333
It was bad.
00:41:00.334 --> 00:41:02.999
It was really sad.
00:41:05.250 --> 00:41:07.998
The alley had several cars
00:41:07.999 --> 00:41:10.998
that were... blown all to hell.
00:41:10.999 --> 00:41:13.999
All the rest were burned out...
00:41:15.792 --> 00:41:19.750
The nightclub, or where
the nightclub used to be,
00:41:19.751 --> 00:41:21.082
was just gutted.
00:41:21.083 --> 00:41:24.875
There was black,
charred stuff all over.
00:41:24.876 --> 00:41:27.249
There were some wreaths laid.
00:41:27.250 --> 00:41:32.250
It was sad. A sad thing to see.
00:41:33.125 --> 00:41:37.124
- I came back six days
before the bombing.
00:41:37.125 --> 00:41:41.998
I was, at that time,
a week before,
00:41:41.999 --> 00:41:43.625
in this club, Sari Club.
00:41:43.626 --> 00:41:46.917
I was dancing
with all the internationals.
00:41:46.918 --> 00:41:47.709
Phew!
00:41:47.710 --> 00:41:51.459
It makes you think a lot
that you\'re lucky.
00:42:00.417 --> 00:42:01.917
- In Bali, we saw
00:42:01.918 --> 00:42:03.750
some evidence
of one of the challenges
00:42:03.751 --> 00:42:06.500
that lies ahead for us
and that\'s terrorism.
00:42:06.501 --> 00:42:08.249
International terrorism.
00:42:08.250 --> 00:42:10.625
We are not immune to terrorism.
00:42:10.626 --> 00:42:12.998
It could happen right here
in Dili,
00:42:12.999 --> 00:42:14.041
it could happen
00:42:14.042 --> 00:42:17.584
at this headquarters,
it could happen anywhere.
00:42:19.000 --> 00:42:22.875
(narrator): The U.N. responds
to the Bali incident
00:42:22.876 --> 00:42:24.208
with a lock-down in Dili.
00:42:24.209 --> 00:42:26.166
Every major government office,
00:42:26.167 --> 00:42:28.833
foreign embassy
and U.N. building
00:42:28.834 --> 00:42:31.374
is protected
by armed military guards
00:42:31.375 --> 00:42:33.958
and barricades.
00:42:33.959 --> 00:42:37.959
More violence
now seems almost inevitable.
00:42:39.250 --> 00:42:42.082
But in the midst
of the anxiety and fear,
00:42:42.083 --> 00:42:44.374
one man\'s courage
confirms Martine\'s faith
00:42:44.375 --> 00:42:47.791
in the strength
of the East Timorese people.
00:42:47.792 --> 00:42:51.998
- So three weeks ago,
we had this case;
00:42:51.999 --> 00:42:55.999
another rape case
involving a 5-year-old girl.
00:42:56.000 --> 00:42:58.082
She was very, very lucky
00:42:58.083 --> 00:43:01.249
that there was a witness
that stopped everything.
00:43:01.250 --> 00:43:04.750
This is really nice.
- There is Nepal Police.
00:43:04.751 --> 00:43:07.291
- Oh, really?
Nepal Police lives here.
00:43:07.292 --> 00:43:10.998
I was really, really surprised
when you were talking
00:43:10.999 --> 00:43:12.291
and wanted to tell the story,
00:43:12.292 --> 00:43:15.124
because people, usually,
they don\'t talk about it.
00:43:15.125 --> 00:43:15.999
They\'re so afraid
00:43:16.000 --> 00:43:18.998
of what\'s gonna happen after,
that they don\'t talk.
00:43:18.999 --> 00:43:22.333
- I think that I will get
some consequence
00:43:22.334 --> 00:43:24.791
about this case
00:43:24.792 --> 00:43:27.998
if I have to tell to the police
at the station
00:43:27.999 --> 00:43:29.998
or to the father of the kid.
00:43:29.999 --> 00:43:31.999
But I think
00:43:32.000 --> 00:43:34.041
I have to rely on my own self.
00:43:34.042 --> 00:43:35.208
I want to do the truth.
00:43:35.209 --> 00:43:38.082
For this new nation,
also for all the kids here.
00:43:38.083 --> 00:43:41.998
It is an example
for the people around here,
00:43:41.999 --> 00:43:44.541
to understand
that this is wrong.
00:43:44.542 --> 00:43:47.416
No need to come say thanks
to me,
00:43:47.417 --> 00:43:49.833
because I just do
my responsibility,
00:43:49.834 --> 00:43:51.999
like a father for all the kids.
00:43:52.000 --> 00:43:54.333
- Yes, but I really
appreciate it,
00:43:54.334 --> 00:43:57.625
and I\'d like to say,
when somebody deserves it,
00:43:57.626 --> 00:44:02.125
I\'d like to say thank you.
Just like this.
00:44:05.918 --> 00:44:07.833
(narrator): Near the end
of the mission,
00:44:07.834 --> 00:44:12.625
Debbie flies from Suai to Dili
with a group of murder suspects.
00:44:12.626 --> 00:44:14.500
Her last case
00:44:14.501 --> 00:44:16.249
is the most meaningful.
00:44:16.250 --> 00:44:17.998
Debbie has saved
a young boy\'s life.
00:44:17.999 --> 00:44:22.124
- There was one fellow who was
stabbed to death on the beach
00:44:22.125 --> 00:44:24.958
and a second fellow
was stabbed not to death.
00:44:24.959 --> 00:44:26.998
He was found
about 200 yards away.
00:44:26.999 --> 00:44:29.750
A 13-year-old kid
basically dying.
00:44:29.751 --> 00:44:31.166
We found him the following day
00:44:31.167 --> 00:44:33.333
and if it weren\'t for us
finding him,
00:44:33.334 --> 00:44:35.998
within the two-hour period
that we found him,
00:44:35.999 --> 00:44:37.082
he probably would\'ve been dead.
00:44:37.083 --> 00:44:39.750
Basically what had happened,
he was stabbed
00:44:39.751 --> 00:44:41.374
on the beach.
Pretended he was dead
00:44:41.375 --> 00:44:43.458
after he was stabbed
with spears and stuff.
00:44:43.459 --> 00:44:46.500
He had great big gashes
all over him.
00:44:46.501 --> 00:44:49.416
Then he ran away
and laid under a bush to die.
00:44:49.417 --> 00:44:52.998
So what we did,
is quickly grabbed onto him,
00:44:52.999 --> 00:44:55.666
covered his wounds,
called for a medic,
00:44:55.667 --> 00:44:59.708
and put an I.V. in him. Called
for a MediVac out of there.
00:44:59.709 --> 00:45:01.333
And we were able
00:45:01.334 --> 00:45:03.998
to get from him, basically,
four suspects.
00:45:03.999 --> 00:45:05.833
Didn\'t know their names offhand.
00:45:05.834 --> 00:45:07.500
We got some information
from him now.
00:45:07.501 --> 00:45:09.875
He knows the name
of one of the suspects,
00:45:09.876 --> 00:45:12.208
so that confirms
one of the suspects here.
00:45:12.209 --> 00:45:14.458
All the suspects
00:45:14.459 --> 00:45:17.709
have been arrested.
00:45:19.999 --> 00:45:22.998
(narrator): Debbie\'s
tour of duty is now over.
00:45:22.999 --> 00:45:26.416
In a few days, she\'ll rejoin
the Canadian contingent
00:45:26.417 --> 00:45:28.998
for the long journey home.
00:45:28.999 --> 00:45:32.583
- I took this on
as a 9-month mission
00:45:32.584 --> 00:45:33.708
with no intention
00:45:33.709 --> 00:45:37.333
of extending to start with.
I would not want to extend.
00:45:37.334 --> 00:45:41.666
In regards to going on another
mission, I would say yes,
00:45:41.667 --> 00:45:44.124
simply because I\'ve talked
to other people
00:45:44.125 --> 00:45:47.041
about missions
and they compare this mission
00:45:47.042 --> 00:45:49.124
to other missions
they\'ve been on,
00:45:49.125 --> 00:45:51.583
and they say,
\"Don\'t judge any mission
00:45:51.584 --> 00:45:53.124
until you\'ve been
on two or three,
00:45:53.125 --> 00:45:58.417
so you have a comparison and you
know what the differences are.\"
00:46:13.876 --> 00:46:15.998
- I love my job in Montreal
for sure,
00:46:15.999 --> 00:46:18.166
but this is something different.
00:46:18.167 --> 00:46:21.666
Here, you can feel
that you\'re helping people.
00:46:21.667 --> 00:46:22.501
You\'re teaching,
00:46:22.502 --> 00:46:26.791
you give your knowledge
of everything, so...
00:46:26.792 --> 00:46:29.998
all my personal experience,
00:46:29.999 --> 00:46:32.998
my police experience...
00:46:32.999 --> 00:46:35.998
This is worth a million for me.
00:46:35.999 --> 00:46:37.917
(narrator):
After weeks of waiting,
00:46:37.918 --> 00:46:43.333
Martine finally gets a response
to her request for an extension.
00:46:43.334 --> 00:46:45.291
I was working really hard
on this,
00:46:45.292 --> 00:46:48.998
and I thought
that I should stay.
00:46:48.999 --> 00:46:50.750
So we asked for the extension,
00:46:50.751 --> 00:46:53.708
but, unfortunately...
I don\'t know what happened,
00:46:53.709 --> 00:46:56.583
I don\'t know who made
the decisions...
00:46:56.584 --> 00:46:59.333
But it came back
that it was a no.
00:46:59.334 --> 00:47:02.334
I have to go back to Canada.
00:47:04.417 --> 00:47:07.708
This is why
I don\'t want to leave.
00:47:07.709 --> 00:47:09.541
This was so fast.
00:47:09.542 --> 00:47:11.875
Phew! It went so fast!
00:47:11.876 --> 00:47:13.541
It doesn\'t seem
00:47:13.542 --> 00:47:15.583
like nine months are gone now.
00:47:15.584 --> 00:47:18.875
It\'s just that I love it.
I love my job,
00:47:18.876 --> 00:47:22.333
and I\'m gonna go back
and let\'s see what happens.
00:47:22.334 --> 00:47:24.998
If I can come back...
00:47:24.999 --> 00:47:29.291
with something else,
U.N. or...
00:47:29.292 --> 00:47:31.833
I don\'t know,
I really don\'t know.
00:47:31.834 --> 00:47:34.626
I\'m open to everything.
00:47:42.876 --> 00:47:45.041
Here\'s your departure card.
I filled that out.
00:47:45.042 --> 00:47:47.998
Can we go inside
and then come back?
00:47:47.999 --> 00:47:50.041
(narrator):
The nine-month mission
00:47:50.042 --> 00:47:52.998
has finally come to an end.
For Martine,
00:47:52.999 --> 00:47:56.998
it\'s a particularly
emotional time.
00:47:56.999 --> 00:48:00.416
- I must be the only one
who\'s saying that,
00:48:00.417 --> 00:48:02.750
that doesn\'t want to go.
00:48:02.751 --> 00:48:08.876
(narrator): Then, word comes in
from Dili that shocks them all.
00:48:10.918 --> 00:48:11.958
A peaceful demonstration
00:48:11.959 --> 00:48:16.541
outside police headquarters
has turned violent.
00:48:16.542 --> 00:48:17.875
Five-hundred people erupt
00:48:17.876 --> 00:48:20.875
when a policeman fires
into the crowd,
00:48:20.876 --> 00:48:22.500
killing a student.
00:48:22.501 --> 00:48:24.082
On their way to the airport,
00:48:24.083 --> 00:48:26.998
three members
of the Canadian contingent
00:48:26.999 --> 00:48:29.834
are trapped in the violence.
00:48:33.083 --> 00:48:34.998
The Prime Minister\'s house
is attacked,
00:48:34.999 --> 00:48:38.333
and a Hello Mister supermarket
is in flames.
00:48:38.334 --> 00:48:42.458
Two people are dead,
four seriously injured.
00:48:42.459 --> 00:48:46.998
And no one has heard from
the trapped Canadian officers.
00:48:46.999 --> 00:48:49.625
- There are three people
missing.
00:48:49.626 --> 00:48:51.541
- Three people missing
right now.
00:48:51.542 --> 00:48:53.500
- And they\'re all living
in the same place.
00:48:53.501 --> 00:48:55.999
- They\'re all staying
in the same place,
00:48:56.000 --> 00:48:57.875
and that\'s right
where the fire is
00:48:57.876 --> 00:48:59.541
and apparently
all the riots are happening.
00:48:59.542 --> 00:49:04.417
So we don\'t know what\'s going
on. It\'s not a good feeling.
00:49:16.584 --> 00:49:19.041
They didn\'t show up, so
we have to leave without them.
00:49:19.042 --> 00:49:20.708
I don\'t like that at all.
- I\'m sorry.
00:49:20.709 --> 00:49:23.458
I\'m sure they\'ll be fine,
they\'ll be on the next flight.
00:49:23.459 --> 00:49:25.999
- Yeah, okay.
- Outside?
00:49:26.000 --> 00:49:28.166
- Are there three?
Are they coming?
00:49:28.167 --> 00:49:32.042
- Yeah, yeah, they\'re coming.
- Excellent.
00:49:32.999 --> 00:49:34.998
- Kids are roaming the streets
and throwing rocks,
00:49:34.999 --> 00:49:36.998
and it was hard getting out,
to catch our flight.
00:49:36.999 --> 00:49:39.333
The end of the mission.
We\'re going back home.
00:49:39.334 --> 00:49:44.291
We finally made it to go out.
The plane\'s waiting for us.
00:49:44.292 --> 00:49:46.124
- Hey, Bonnie!
00:49:46.125 --> 00:49:48.751
Where have you been?
00:49:49.250 --> 00:49:51.625
What happened?
- We got stuck
00:49:51.626 --> 00:49:54.333
right in the middle of it.
They destroyed the hotel.
00:49:54.334 --> 00:49:57.875
- Everything?
- Incredible.
00:49:57.876 --> 00:49:59.500
- All people are ready?
00:49:59.501 --> 00:50:03.791
- Usually the boxes
are in the streets.
00:50:03.792 --> 00:50:05.374
(narrator): In the end,
00:50:05.375 --> 00:50:07.666
East Timor will survive
the violence,
00:50:07.667 --> 00:50:10.998
as will all members
of the Canadian contingent.
00:50:10.999 --> 00:50:12.166
In the coming days,
00:50:12.167 --> 00:50:16.750
the U.N. releases evidence that
militiamen incited the riot.
00:50:16.751 --> 00:50:20.959
All of them have sought refuge
in Indonesia.
00:50:22.999 --> 00:50:24.958
Back in a cold climate,
00:50:24.959 --> 00:50:27.750
the legacy of Timor
continues to linger.
00:50:27.751 --> 00:50:30.791
- Dan and I had
a really good relationship
00:50:30.792 --> 00:50:31.998
before the mission;
00:50:31.999 --> 00:50:35.208
during the mission, our
relationship actually improved.
00:50:35.209 --> 00:50:37.041
Because we have experienced
00:50:37.042 --> 00:50:39.833
the mission together,
we can work through
00:50:39.834 --> 00:50:42.998
stuff that happened
during the mission,
00:50:42.999 --> 00:50:44.708
we can work through stuff
that\'s happening now,
00:50:44.709 --> 00:50:47.124
after the mission; our feelings,
what we\'re thinking about,
00:50:47.125 --> 00:50:49.625
how we react
to different things,
00:50:49.626 --> 00:50:51.958
and just the whole outlook.
00:50:51.959 --> 00:50:54.998
Dan\'s outlook now is pretty much
the same as my outlook now
00:50:54.999 --> 00:50:57.999
because we\'ve both
been on the mission.
00:50:58.542 --> 00:51:00.541
I\'m just pulling over.
00:51:00.542 --> 00:51:04.125
I\'m gonna line \'em up
east of 39th Street.
00:51:05.459 --> 00:51:08.666
I think I did really good work
00:51:08.667 --> 00:51:09.998
in East Timor.
00:51:09.999 --> 00:51:12.416
As far as working hard,
I worked hard,
00:51:12.417 --> 00:51:17.124
and I tried to do as much,
as I could for the people there
00:51:17.125 --> 00:51:18.998
with the resources that I had.
00:51:18.999 --> 00:51:23.249
Oh no, you have marijuana,
don\'t you? Oh no.
00:51:23.250 --> 00:51:25.208
Coming back here,
00:51:25.209 --> 00:51:28.458
it seemed like I was put back
into the same spot.
00:51:28.459 --> 00:51:31.666
It would be like if I left
and I was round,
00:51:31.667 --> 00:51:36.458
and then I come back and I\'m
not round anymore, I\'m square.
00:51:36.459 --> 00:51:38.998
You can\'t fit me into
that round spot anymore,
00:51:38.999 --> 00:51:40.998
\'cause I\'m square,
I\'m different, I\'ve changed.
00:51:40.999 --> 00:51:43.291
So it\'s a difference
in doing police work,
00:51:43.292 --> 00:51:47.542
it\'s a difference in just living
my life every day.
00:51:56.083 --> 00:51:59.374
- My suitcase
is not even empty yet.
00:51:59.375 --> 00:52:02.666
It\'s still full of stuff.
00:52:02.667 --> 00:52:05.998
For sure,
I would go back anywhere.
00:52:05.999 --> 00:52:07.666
Anywhere.
00:52:07.667 --> 00:52:09.583
I would,
just for the experience.
00:52:09.584 --> 00:52:13.833
I learned so much about me,
about the job,
00:52:13.834 --> 00:52:17.667
and if I could,
I would leave tomorrow.
00:52:24.751 --> 00:52:27.833
I just feel
like I\'m more tolerant
00:52:27.834 --> 00:52:33.998
with my colleagues,
people that I speak to.
00:52:33.999 --> 00:52:37.124
I saw so much bad things there.
00:52:37.125 --> 00:52:42.124
I don\'t know what changed me
exactly in Timor.
00:52:42.125 --> 00:52:45.876
Maybe seeing people suffering.
00:52:53.999 --> 00:52:55.998
I think this is so good.
00:52:55.999 --> 00:52:58.708
It brings you so much,
00:52:58.709 --> 00:53:02.292
that you will want to go back.
00:53:04.459 --> 00:53:08.209
