This new compilation DVD explores the life-enhancing impact of continued creativity and artistic expression--well into the later years! It uses brief excerpts that profile the creative process of elder artists, introduces us to a 90-something actress who grabs life with both hands, and demonstrates how creative expression can even transcend dementia. The DVD also includes a section on the work of the late Dr. Gene Cohen, co-founder of the Creativity Discovery Corps, who was best known for championing the limitless potential of the aging brain. architect, who is approaching 98 years,

Creativity is really one of the realms that has advanced
the understanding of a uh… brain-body interactions,

The whole area of what’s called brain plasticity is really quite
fascinating in terms of how the brain changes with aging.

Brain cells have projections,

they are called dendrites, they are
sort of like branches from a tree,

Whenever we challenge our brain, we produce new

Crossword puzzles can do this,
word games, everyday creativity,

recipe, people love the recipe,

tremendous sense of accomplishment, mastery of control,

And now in their early part of the 21st
century, it’s a highly developed style.

They’ve been allowed to create and to follow
their own esthetic without having to…

else expects of them,

maybe that’s what you can see
when you look at the quilts.

You see joy, and some people
say they see pain and

they see sorrow, and… and it’s all of that. They
just had freedom to do whatever they wanted.

contemporary artist that are so envious

of people like Arionzia Pettway
who don’t have to listen to

a gallery director or don’t have to worry
about how museums respond to their work.

Most of the time, women in Gee’s Bend, they don’t… they doesn’t have a
pattern, they lay out at night and they planned to way they want to quilt,

I’m just about almost got it done.

dancers to introduce ballet to America

playing the role of the

York City as the Friar and I get applause,

and I love it. At my age it’s just right.

By structuring creative activities,

it is the most direct line to being with them, it gives,
you know, vehicles for the staff to be in their presence,

in a very supportive way for everybody,

because the communication is happening.

We know, and I would never say to anyone
that this is not a dreadful disease,

I would never say that this doesn’t change your family structure and change
probably what you had in mind for your golden years or as a loved one,

and daughter caring for your parents.
The reality is it’s happening,

something that embraces the essence,
