The wind-swept town of Zinder in the heart of the Sahel region of Niger is a place travellers only pass through. Kara-Kara, the former lepers’ quarter, is the pariahs’ district of this town. Gangs referred to as the "Palais” have sprung up in this area and are spreading their influence throughout the town. Obsessed by a culture of bodybuilding and violence, the gang members induce fear in the population.
Outside the moments spent together in a body-building camp, some of them follow the path that will lead them to a life of crime and prison or a violent death, others strive to pull themselves out of the rut they find themselves in. This is the case for Siniya, Bawo and Ramsess, whom the director, originally from Zinder, has succeeded in filming up close to reveal to us their survival strategies. By following them in their daily lives divided between their gang, their family and fending for themselves, she gives us a sense of their desire to break free from the cycle of violence which has built their identities.

00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:49.200
- Siniya!
- Yeah?
00:02:54.720 --> 00:02:57.240
The Hitler gang's popular here.
00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:33.880
I look best in the photo.
00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:36.840
The holes in your body need filling!
00:03:37.880 --> 00:03:39.760
Fuck you!
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:47.080
My name's Siniya Boy.
00:03:48.440 --> 00:03:51.760
We train at our HQ,
00:03:51.960 --> 00:03:54.720
which we've named "Hitler".
00:03:57.640 --> 00:04:01.880
It's the name of a guy in America.
00:04:03.240 --> 00:04:05.560
We heard he's an invincible warrior.
00:04:05.880 --> 00:04:09.840
And we're like him: we're not scared.
So we're nicknamed "Hitler".
00:04:11.760 --> 00:04:13.840
This is where we train.
00:04:14.040 --> 00:04:16.400
All the guys.
Friends and brothers.
00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:41.840
- Siniya!
- Yeah.
00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:46.760
Take a good photo. I wanna show
my wife and future baby
00:04:47.200 --> 00:04:51.080
that Daddy's huge, a real man!
00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:56.680
- More like a pile of shit!
- Is this true what he's saying?
00:04:57.520 --> 00:04:59.880
Check out how built I am!
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.360
Right?
00:05:01.760 --> 00:05:03.200
Watch it!
00:05:03.400 --> 00:05:06.320
- Yeah, right!
- I'm telling you!
00:05:07.400 --> 00:05:11.640
- Lower your head a bit.
- You can see your bald-spot.
00:05:13.160 --> 00:05:14.840
It's a blessing!
00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:27.880
If a brawl breaks out, we dive right in.
00:05:28.840 --> 00:05:30.840
If a gang shows us no respect,
00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:33.720
we sweep down on them
and beat them all up.
00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:36.920
We break everything and leave.
00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:40.720
Not a single thug dares
to cross Kara Kara.
00:05:42.200 --> 00:05:43.600
Hiya!
00:05:44.680 --> 00:05:45.800
Hiya!
00:05:47.440 --> 00:05:49.160
My respects.
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:52.240
Greetings!
00:05:55.800 --> 00:05:57.240
Boy! Boy!
00:05:58.760 --> 00:06:01.080
- My respects.
- Boy!
00:06:05.440 --> 00:06:08.560
Kara Kara is a gang den,
and I was born here.
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:10.960
That's the truth.
00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:15.600
Something's bothering me...
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:20.080
We grew up in the same town,
in Zinder...
00:06:20.640 --> 00:06:23.800
but I realize
00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:26.920
we didn't have the same opportunities.
00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:30.120
Why's that?
00:06:30.320 --> 00:06:31.840
Education.
00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:34.320
That's what I think.
00:06:34.640 --> 00:06:36.600
It's education
00:06:36.960 --> 00:06:39.920
that made us different.
00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:44.680
You didn't grow up in Kara Kara.
00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:48.560
I live in Kara Kara.
I was born and raised here.
00:06:49.280 --> 00:06:51.960
Kara Kara is the district in Zinder
00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:54.480
where the marginalized live,
00:06:54.880 --> 00:06:58.080
those with nothing, outcasts.
00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:02.360
Lepers, the blind, beggars...
00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:05.760
They were moved
and forced to live here.
00:07:05.960 --> 00:07:08.120
That's Kara Kara.
00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:35.480
When I called, I thought you'd say no
00:07:37.400 --> 00:07:39.400
because of the game.
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:53.840
You hear that?
The kids are stoning the wall.
00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:57.680
It's normal, it's Kara Kara!
00:07:57.960 --> 00:08:01.640
- Oh, yeah?
- Yeah, that's how it is.
00:08:03.320 --> 00:08:05.160
I was born here,
00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.880
Whatever happens,
I'll always be from Kara Kara.
00:08:09.080 --> 00:08:10.880
Whether people respect us,
00:08:11.080 --> 00:08:14.600
insult us, or call us sons of bitches,
00:08:14.800 --> 00:08:17.080
I tell them I'm from Kara Kara.
00:08:17.280 --> 00:08:18.840
Right.
00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:23.200
Lots of people constantly stigmatize us,
00:08:23.400 --> 00:08:26.280
so some of us don't dare to say
we're from Kara Kara.
00:08:26.480 --> 00:08:29.560
Even in Mecca,
I'd say I'm from Kara Kara.
00:08:29.760 --> 00:08:34.160
Some people, even at hospital,
when they're asked for their address,
00:08:35.080 --> 00:08:38.080
for a prescription,
don't say they're from Kara Kara.
00:08:38.440 --> 00:08:43.960
Otherwise, you're seen as a bandit,
a thief, a murderer...
00:08:44.120 --> 00:08:46.640
That's how they see you.
00:08:47.280 --> 00:08:50.800
Even the police treat us
differently from others.
00:08:51.040 --> 00:08:53.160
Once, they raided
the restaurant next door
00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:57.440
and arrested all the customers
and neighbors.
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.080
I had left there
just ten minutes earlier.
00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:06.120
Each person had to pay
8,000 francs' bail.
00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:08.640
15 US dollars just to be freed!
00:09:08.840 --> 00:09:10.760
Chapiou said:
00:09:11.160 --> 00:09:16.960
"We were rounded up like cattle
for no reason.
00:09:17.160 --> 00:09:20.520
"I pray to God for Boko Haram to come."
00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:22.640
To screw the cops?
00:09:22.880 --> 00:09:25.800
A cop asked him, "What did you say?"
"I pray for Boko Haram to come."
00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.000
- "But you'll die, too."
- "So what if I do!"
00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:33.120
- Yeah?
- He said that given the injustice,
00:09:33.320 --> 00:09:37.320
he'd rather Boko Haram explode a bomb
and kill everyone.
00:09:39.560 --> 00:09:42.280
Chapiou's a real screwball, I swear!
00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:45.000
He has nothing to lose.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:57.480
- Boko Haram?
- They're stoning him.
00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:00.000
Who? A thief?
00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:04.000
No, not a thief.
It's an inter-ethnic conflict.
00:11:04.200 --> 00:11:06.920
Oh, my God!
Are they gonna kill him?
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.560
Not only him.
00:11:11.960 --> 00:11:13.800
No way! Fuck!
00:11:14.680 --> 00:11:18.000
May God save us!
00:11:18.280 --> 00:11:19.560
He's dead.
00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:23.560
- Can you hear the screams?
- They've got one.
00:11:23.760 --> 00:11:27.360
- He's being hit with sticks.
- They're hitting his head.
00:11:29.040 --> 00:11:30.280
It's over.
00:11:31.840 --> 00:11:33.560
They've smashed his skull in.
00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:40.200
A "palais"
00:11:40.600 --> 00:11:44.840
is a group of youngsters
with nothing to do.
00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:48.560
Each group forms new ones
00:11:48.760 --> 00:11:50.560
in other alleys, other districts.
00:11:52.120 --> 00:11:57.840
And fights often break out between them.
00:11:58.160 --> 00:12:04.400
Gradually, studded belts
made way for knuckledusters.
00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:06.120
And after that...
00:12:06.360 --> 00:12:08.760
came sticks,
00:12:09.720 --> 00:12:14.080
then branches torn from trees
to bludgeon people.
00:12:14.560 --> 00:12:18.800
It was getting worse and worse,
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.720
especially with the return
of the migrants.
00:12:23.960 --> 00:12:30.560
I don't like to speak ill of others,
but countries like Nigeria
00:12:30.760 --> 00:12:34.280
are ahead of us
and do worse things than we do.
00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:38.600
That's where our guys learn
to act like gangsters.
00:12:38.800 --> 00:12:42.520
Movies inspire the guys, as well.
00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:46.800
Gangs use knives
and other weapons...
00:12:47.160 --> 00:12:52.200
They think, "That cleaver's
not just for chopping meat!"
00:12:52.440 --> 00:12:54.520
You hide weapons in your pants.
00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:05.520
Come.
00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:09.800
I'm at the body-building camp.
00:13:30.120 --> 00:13:32.800
Soldier, you said you were beaten
but you did it!
00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:37.000
You're selected.
See how you lifted those weights?
00:13:39.520 --> 00:13:42.400
You admire me
even if you won't admit it!
00:13:46.920 --> 00:13:49.280
- Careful!
- Open your arms wider.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:50.880
Lift.
00:14:10.280 --> 00:14:11.520
There.
00:14:32.120 --> 00:14:35.320
You're not in a good position
to lift the bike!
00:14:36.720 --> 00:14:38.440
- What's that?
- Leave him.
00:14:38.800 --> 00:14:42.480
- How's he gonna lift it?
- No way you could do it, Americain!
00:15:06.840 --> 00:15:08.960
Well done, Bawo!
00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:26.200
My name's Idrissa Sani Malam,
00:15:26.920 --> 00:15:29.560
better known as Bawo.
00:15:31.040 --> 00:15:34.280
I used to be the boss of a palais.
00:15:36.160 --> 00:15:39.160
Now I'm a taxi-moto driver.
00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:46.920
- How did you get your scars?
- These?
00:15:47.800 --> 00:15:49.600
In a fight.
00:15:50.160 --> 00:15:52.720
My scalp was split open.
00:15:53.240 --> 00:15:56.680
And this, a stabbing
when the blade snapped.
00:15:57.800 --> 00:16:05.640
But the scar on my head
was from a fight.
00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:10.720
It was during a battle
00:16:13.080 --> 00:16:15.800
between rival gangs.
00:16:18.640 --> 00:16:20.600
I was hit with a chain,
00:16:21.320 --> 00:16:24.120
and my scalp split open.
00:16:24.760 --> 00:16:27.800
It wasn't a knife.
The knife was here.
00:16:28.160 --> 00:16:33.280
It was over some forged banknotes.
00:16:34.640 --> 00:16:39.920
When a fight breaks out,
you grab your knuckleduster.
00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:42.880
You put it on and hit your opponent.
00:16:43.080 --> 00:16:47.640
It can go in very deep, like a knife.
00:16:48.120 --> 00:16:51.680
It cuts right through the ligaments.
00:16:52.200 --> 00:16:55.800
No need to twist it,
it cuts clean through.
00:16:56.400 --> 00:16:59.320
It goes right through to the bone.
00:17:31.280 --> 00:17:33.480
This was a machete, this was a knife.
00:17:33.720 --> 00:17:35.720
This was a machete.
00:17:41.120 --> 00:17:42.800
On my back, a knife.
00:17:44.360 --> 00:17:48.600
This scar was from a razor
and the one on my arm, from a knife.
00:17:50.400 --> 00:17:53.920
It was in the city,
and we were all totally drunk.
00:17:56.840 --> 00:18:00.160
I have another one on the chest.
00:18:03.480 --> 00:18:09.240
This one's special,
because it was made by a woman.
00:18:12.080 --> 00:18:17.200
We were lovers.
Or rather, I was a regular client.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:24.600
Highwaymen.
We were on our way back from Libya.
00:18:25.080 --> 00:18:27.400
They wanted to take our savings.
00:18:27.600 --> 00:18:30.560
We clashed and I got this scar.
00:19:12.280 --> 00:19:14.200
OK, let's go!
00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:19.400
Let's go!
00:19:25.680 --> 00:19:28.360
Let's go!
Everyone to the latrines!
00:19:29.280 --> 00:19:32.880
To the latrines!
Let's go!
00:19:34.920 --> 00:19:36.800
Move it!
00:20:10.080 --> 00:20:13.760
OK, open the Kara Kara cells!
00:20:14.080 --> 00:20:16.880
Let's open the Kara Kara cells!
00:20:35.560 --> 00:20:37.480
- Visit permit?
- Yes.
00:20:37.680 --> 00:20:40.640
- Who for?
- Salissou Cikara.
00:20:41.240 --> 00:20:42.720
Papa Solo.
00:20:43.320 --> 00:20:45.560
- Americain.
- OK, wait here.
00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:48.520
Salissou Cikara!
00:20:50.840 --> 00:20:51.840
Boss!
00:20:52.440 --> 00:20:53.600
Papa Solo!
00:20:54.200 --> 00:20:55.920
Guys!
00:20:56.360 --> 00:20:58.120
How's it going?
00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:00.320
Boss, Solo Guy...
00:21:00.640 --> 00:21:02.880
How's everything going?
00:21:06.280 --> 00:21:08.360
Doing good, Americain?
00:21:09.120 --> 00:21:12.200
If you were out,
everything would be fine.
00:21:12.400 --> 00:21:15.200
We get by better together.
00:21:15.480 --> 00:21:18.680
You're the brain,
and without you, it's tough.
00:21:20.960 --> 00:21:26.240
Not knowing what your sentence
will be is hard.
00:21:26.680 --> 00:21:28.840
Awaiting trial is worse.
00:21:29.640 --> 00:21:30.760
It's really unfair.
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:34.800
I've been through it three times.
Hanged three times!
00:21:37.720 --> 00:21:41.400
Look at these scars.
It's really not right.
00:21:44.120 --> 00:21:47.320
Not even a dog deserves that!
00:21:49.200 --> 00:21:53.560
You're arrested for one thing and the cops
accuse you of something else.
00:21:54.280 --> 00:21:55.920
We should be tried
00:21:56.120 --> 00:22:00.040
for our deeds,
not for crimes we never committed.
00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:03.240
Even if you tell the truth,
00:22:03.440 --> 00:22:08.040
they string you up and beat you.
00:22:08.400 --> 00:22:09.920
What does that mean?
00:22:10.720 --> 00:22:15.600
They want me to give them
00:22:16.640 --> 00:22:19.720
the dealers' addresses.
00:22:19.920 --> 00:22:23.240
- I tell them, "I don't do drugs!"
- It's unfair.
00:22:23.520 --> 00:22:26.320
They want me to give them
the dealers' names.
00:22:29.600 --> 00:22:32.320
The real reason you're arrested
00:22:33.320 --> 00:22:36.640
means nothing to them!
00:22:36.840 --> 00:22:39.600
They turn you into a snitch with torture.
00:22:39.800 --> 00:22:41.600
They don't care
if you're innocent or guilty.
00:22:41.920 --> 00:22:45.640
I was blamed because it's me,
the image of evil,
00:22:46.760 --> 00:22:48.440
the son of a poor family.
00:22:48.640 --> 00:22:51.920
We did things and repented,
00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:55.640
but there's no second chance.
That's not right!
00:23:35.560 --> 00:23:37.680
In truth,
00:23:38.400 --> 00:23:41.080
the palais were irresponsible.
00:23:41.400 --> 00:23:44.880
A few of us started to realize
it was getting us nowhere
00:23:45.080 --> 00:23:47.360
and doing more harm than good.
00:23:47.560 --> 00:23:51.640
We were going nowhere,
but prison opened our eyes.
00:23:51.840 --> 00:23:56.320
Some of us started changing
and thinking before acting.
00:24:11.080 --> 00:24:15.800
- Here's the ultrasound.
- Is that what you did today?
00:24:16.600 --> 00:24:18.040
Yes. Here.
00:24:18.240 --> 00:24:26.000
- Is that the baby?
- Yes. That's its heartbeat.
00:24:26.200 --> 00:24:29.840
- Did they say all's well?
- Yes, all's well.
00:24:30.360 --> 00:24:34.560
- OK... How much did it cost?
- 3,000 francs.
00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:40.640
3,000 francs?
Just for an ultrasound?
00:24:40.960 --> 00:24:43.480
And the other test?
00:24:44.560 --> 00:24:46.280
- The blood test?
- Yes.
00:24:46.480 --> 00:24:47.600
9,500.
00:24:48.160 --> 00:24:50.320
- Do you still have more to do?
- Yes.
00:24:50.520 --> 00:24:53.120
On top of the 5,500 you paid last time?
00:24:54.960 --> 00:24:59.800
Fuck, the rate these bills are coming,
things are gonna be tough!
00:25:00.680 --> 00:25:02.360
Plus 2,000 for the sheets.
00:25:02.560 --> 00:25:04.360
That's well over 10,000.
00:25:04.560 --> 00:25:07.440
The sheets are for the birth.
00:25:10.200 --> 00:25:11.400
Oh, yeah?
00:25:12.040 --> 00:25:15.040
Did they tell you the due-date?
00:25:15.280 --> 00:25:17.480
I need another exam to find out.
00:25:17.680 --> 00:25:19.080
They didn't tell you?
00:25:19.280 --> 00:25:22.080
No, they'll tell me
after the next blood test.
00:25:22.280 --> 00:25:27.960
I'll need to find a way to get the money.
It's gonna be tough.
00:25:28.920 --> 00:25:32.720
Business is bad,
but we'll do the necessary.
00:25:32.920 --> 00:25:35.040
Is it in two days or next week?
00:25:35.520 --> 00:25:38.000
- Tomorrow.
- Tomorrow-tomorrow?
00:25:39.640 --> 00:25:43.520
Shit, 9,500 francs by tomorrow?
00:25:43.880 --> 00:25:46.320
How much do you have to help?
00:25:47.040 --> 00:25:48.040
Nothing.
00:25:48.240 --> 00:25:50.280
Not a cent?
00:25:50.480 --> 00:25:53.640
OK, I'll go into town,
see what I can come up with.
00:25:54.280 --> 00:25:57.520
Is it possible to know
whether it's a girl or a boy?
00:25:57.760 --> 00:25:58.840
Yes, it's possible.
00:25:59.040 --> 00:26:01.240
- So?
- They didn't say.
00:26:01.560 --> 00:26:04.280
So we don't know a thing so far!
00:26:04.520 --> 00:26:07.400
Can you feel it kicking?
00:26:07.920 --> 00:26:11.080
- A lot.
- You can really feel it?
00:26:11.280 --> 00:26:14.200
It kicks so much,
it keeps me awake!
00:26:14.520 --> 00:26:18.120
Shit! How do you feel it?
Like this?
00:26:19.240 --> 00:26:21.960
- Like this, too.
- I can't feel a thing!
00:26:23.080 --> 00:26:25.560
With a bit of luck, you'll feel it.
00:26:28.840 --> 00:26:31.440
- You can feel it like this?
- Yes, you can.
00:26:33.720 --> 00:26:35.120
Hey, kiddo!
00:26:35.960 --> 00:26:39.160
The city's poor and the border's closed.
00:26:39.360 --> 00:26:41.880
Ask God for the best for us.
00:26:44.400 --> 00:26:47.720
We don't even know
if you're a girl or a boy.
00:26:48.680 --> 00:26:51.840
Innocent as you are,
God will answer your prayers
00:26:52.040 --> 00:26:53.960
and give us some money.
00:27:09.160 --> 00:27:10.160
Hi, Bawo!
00:27:10.920 --> 00:27:11.920
How are you?
00:27:12.360 --> 00:27:13.400
You good?
00:27:14.400 --> 00:27:15.600
Not too tired?
00:27:31.160 --> 00:27:34.720
Aicha, I did a lot
of bad things in the past.
00:27:36.160 --> 00:27:38.120
Really mean things...
00:27:40.280 --> 00:27:41.880
It haunts me.
00:27:45.320 --> 00:27:47.600
I gathered youngsters together...
00:27:49.160 --> 00:27:53.960
Word went out that any girl
wearing a short skirt
00:27:54.880 --> 00:27:56.920
should be beaten and stripped.
00:27:58.200 --> 00:28:01.920
We preferred to take them to our place,
00:28:02.160 --> 00:28:05.360
beat them and rape them.
00:28:09.280 --> 00:28:15.680
We had a prefab shed
which we turned into a bedroom.
00:28:15.880 --> 00:28:19.080
The other guys made tea outside.
00:28:19.520 --> 00:28:20.760
For the "Boss".
00:28:20.920 --> 00:28:23.120
When a girl was dragged in,
00:28:23.320 --> 00:28:27.520
a guy would take her to a compartment
to "empty himself".
00:28:28.520 --> 00:28:31.680
And what if she screamed?
00:28:31.920 --> 00:28:33.480
If she screamed,
00:28:33.680 --> 00:28:37.520
we put our hand over her mouth.
00:28:38.320 --> 00:28:40.000
Until we were done.
00:28:40.280 --> 00:28:43.560
Sometimes, it was a case
of "breaking them in".
00:28:43.760 --> 00:28:46.760
Sometimes, we threatened them
with a knife.
00:28:47.000 --> 00:28:49.960
Then they shut up.
00:28:50.240 --> 00:28:54.520
Over time, they got used to it
and became one of us.
00:28:56.160 --> 00:28:57.880
You played loud music...
00:28:58.080 --> 00:29:01.800
Music was playing round the clock.
00:29:02.160 --> 00:29:08.480
It was never turned off,
whatever the time of night.
00:29:08.840 --> 00:29:10.880
Some guys didn't sleep at all.
00:29:11.160 --> 00:29:13.960
In the morning,
others took over from them.
00:29:14.920 --> 00:29:21.200
They'd play reggae, smoke weed
and take Tramadol.
00:29:21.440 --> 00:29:26.240
There was tea next door,
so everything was OK.
00:29:28.960 --> 00:29:30.720
That's how things were.
00:29:33.360 --> 00:29:35.080
Like that.
00:29:46.280 --> 00:29:50.720
A lot has changed in my life.
00:29:55.160 --> 00:29:59.520
What made me change was an NGO.
00:30:00.960 --> 00:30:04.440
I went through 18 months
of training in Zinder.
00:30:06.200 --> 00:30:11.000
Throughout it, they kept repeating
that we should stop the violence,
00:30:11.560 --> 00:30:13.680
that violence was bad.
00:30:14.000 --> 00:30:18.080
They asked, "Why all the violence?"
00:30:18.400 --> 00:30:19.920
Lack of work!
00:30:20.200 --> 00:30:22.800
We had nothing to do, nothing to eat...
00:31:30.560 --> 00:31:32.160
Open the gas stand!
00:31:34.040 --> 00:31:35.640
Start setting up.
00:32:05.200 --> 00:32:06.440
Alright, Sodja?
00:32:06.960 --> 00:32:07.960
Serve him.
00:32:11.520 --> 00:32:12.600
Sodja!
00:32:18.360 --> 00:32:21.360
- Hey, Big Guy!
- Hey!
00:32:21.680 --> 00:32:22.920
- You cool?
- Yeah.
00:32:23.240 --> 00:32:27.240
- How's it going, Bawo?
- Can't complain, God willing!
00:32:29.880 --> 00:32:32.000
- And work?
- OK.
00:32:32.480 --> 00:32:35.400
- Some gas, right?
- Yeah.
00:32:38.000 --> 00:32:41.360
- Business good?
- It's not always easy.
00:32:41.680 --> 00:32:42.880
Yeah, I know.
00:32:43.600 --> 00:32:45.200
How's your brother?
00:32:45.800 --> 00:32:49.320
- Getting by.
- Hold that, I'll get some more.
00:32:54.160 --> 00:32:56.720
Keep buying your gas from me.
00:32:56.880 --> 00:32:59.040
- OK.
- And find me customers!
00:32:59.200 --> 00:33:01.080
Sure, it's not easy.
00:33:01.320 --> 00:33:04.400
I'm expecting more gas.
I sent someone for some.
00:33:04.760 --> 00:33:08.080
- You're out of stock?
- It's pretty tough.
00:33:18.200 --> 00:33:21.240
- All good?
- Perfect.
00:33:21.840 --> 00:33:23.280
Alright?
00:33:23.880 --> 00:33:26.720
I was at a wedding
when you called.
00:33:27.680 --> 00:33:30.160
But my stock has run out!
00:33:35.120 --> 00:33:38.320
- I phoned you...
- I was at a wedding.
00:33:38.520 --> 00:33:41.080
I didn't see you'd called till after.
00:33:41.600 --> 00:33:43.480
Never mind.
00:33:44.040 --> 00:33:47.640
The gas is of a better quality today.
00:33:48.840 --> 00:33:51.320
The jerrycan's filled up, too.
00:33:54.280 --> 00:33:56.480
Cash-Money, bring the change!
00:33:57.760 --> 00:34:01.720
- Another jerrycan?
- No, this is fine for now.
00:34:02.320 --> 00:34:03.960
Business is slow.
00:34:04.120 --> 00:34:06.640
Cash-Money, give me some change.
00:34:27.320 --> 00:34:29.960
I'm going to immigrate, anyway.
00:34:30.160 --> 00:34:31.160
Why?
00:34:31.960 --> 00:34:35.520
If I get shot,
at least things will be cool.
00:34:36.320 --> 00:34:38.960
Earning a living is a genuine jihad!
00:34:42.960 --> 00:34:46.040
There was a radio debate
on immigration recently
00:34:46.240 --> 00:34:47.920
to discourage youngsters.
00:34:48.120 --> 00:34:51.880
- What did they suggest instead?
- To stay in their country.
00:34:52.080 --> 00:34:55.000
Unemployment leads to
fighting and theft.
00:34:55.320 --> 00:34:57.720
I prefer my old life as a thief back!
00:34:57.920 --> 00:35:02.520
Come on, it's time
to get back into robbery!
00:35:02.720 --> 00:35:07.640
- No, gasoline is better.
- What does that earn you?
00:35:08.240 --> 00:35:09.880
The Whites here...
00:35:10.200 --> 00:35:12.400
are really underhand.
00:35:13.040 --> 00:35:15.080
They're supposed to be here
00:35:15.280 --> 00:35:17.480
to keep the peace.
00:35:17.720 --> 00:35:20.360
But they have other reasons.
00:35:22.600 --> 00:35:25.720
Like stealing our underground riches.
00:35:26.040 --> 00:35:30.200
Have you ever heard of a battle
between Boko Haram
00:35:30.840 --> 00:35:32.920
and a foreign army?
00:35:35.000 --> 00:35:36.640
It's our soldiers
00:35:36.920 --> 00:35:38.760
who fight them.
00:35:39.400 --> 00:35:43.520
And when fifty get killed,
they announce that it's eight or nine.
00:35:43.720 --> 00:35:45.720
The trouble is,
00:35:45.920 --> 00:35:50.240
it costs Niger money
to have these foreigners here.
00:35:50.600 --> 00:35:52.320
We pay these people.
00:35:52.520 --> 00:35:55.960
We give them tons of money
to do fuck all.
00:35:56.160 --> 00:35:58.520
It's our soldiers doing the work.
00:35:58.720 --> 00:36:02.200
It's such a terrible waste.
00:36:02.400 --> 00:36:05.240
- Niger pays them?
- Of course.
00:36:08.200 --> 00:36:09.880
Hello, Mahamadou?
00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:16.680
Can you bring seven jerrycans of gas
to Rouge's stand?
00:36:18.120 --> 00:36:20.680
Seven jerrycans in good condition.
00:36:23.160 --> 00:36:25.520
You'll find him at his stand.
00:36:28.080 --> 00:36:29.600
Right away.
00:36:30.520 --> 00:36:33.280
Ramsess, you're a business woman!
00:36:33.920 --> 00:36:35.720
Work makes you worthy!
00:36:36.040 --> 00:36:40.080
Are you compensated
if there's an accident while smuggling?
00:36:40.400 --> 00:36:44.720
- The police would seize everything.
- Even your vehicle?
00:36:44.920 --> 00:36:48.320
I'd rather stop
00:36:48.520 --> 00:36:52.720
so as to avoid crazy chases
00:36:52.920 --> 00:36:56.000
and fatal accidents.
00:36:56.240 --> 00:37:01.120
I don't want to hit another vehicle
and finish off burned up.
00:37:02.800 --> 00:37:05.720
- Money's useless when you're dead.
- True.
00:37:06.080 --> 00:37:08.920
How many died
in that accident near Matameye?
00:37:09.120 --> 00:37:12.120
The whole village burned down.
00:37:12.760 --> 00:37:15.240
Smugglers, inhabitants...
All of them burned!
00:37:15.440 --> 00:37:17.480
Not one of them escaped the fire!
00:37:17.680 --> 00:37:21.000
What good is that?
Best let them seize your vehicle.
00:37:21.200 --> 00:37:23.200
How d'you get by with no truck?
00:37:23.400 --> 00:37:25.520
I leave it to them.
00:37:25.720 --> 00:37:29.840
- I'm going home to bed.
- Right.
00:38:05.760 --> 00:38:11.080
My name is Ramatou Ma Maïna,
better known as Ramsess.
00:38:16.640 --> 00:38:18.600
God made me...
00:38:19.400 --> 00:38:22.760
half-woman, half-man.
00:38:27.320 --> 00:38:30.040
I'm a smuggler.
00:38:30.360 --> 00:38:33.560
I’m going to get some gas at the border.
00:38:42.800 --> 00:38:47.080
If I had another choice,
I wouldn’t put my life in danger.
00:38:48.800 --> 00:38:50.880
When someone smuggles,
00:38:51.080 --> 00:38:53.800
there's a reason behind it.
00:38:54.080 --> 00:38:57.200
It's because they're out of work.
00:39:01.200 --> 00:39:03.480
- You alright?
- Sure, and you?
00:39:03.680 --> 00:39:06.600
- Business is good.
- Thank God.
00:39:06.880 --> 00:39:10.960
- How are sales?
- Good. You want another one?
00:39:11.240 --> 00:39:13.400
No, one's enough.
It’s good quality.
00:39:13.600 --> 00:39:15.080
See you tomorrow, God willing.
00:39:25.280 --> 00:39:28.400
What can disturb your peace of mind?
00:39:30.200 --> 00:39:33.000
When people made fun
00:39:33.200 --> 00:39:35.960
of my hermaphroditism,
I used to get upset.
00:39:36.280 --> 00:39:41.480
Now, it's waking up with no money
that bothers me.
00:39:41.880 --> 00:39:47.480
As the eldest of the family, I’m in charge
of my mother, my brothers and sisters.
00:39:47.720 --> 00:39:52.600
But waking up penniless
and unable to fulfill their needs
00:39:53.120 --> 00:39:55.440
makes me sad.
00:40:22.520 --> 00:40:23.800
- Mom?
- Yes?
00:40:24.000 --> 00:40:28.040
- What did we feed them today?
- Bean flour and oat bran.
00:40:28.520 --> 00:40:32.800
- One goat has diarrhea.
- The boiled bean water, too.
00:40:44.800 --> 00:40:48.600
- We're going to the border.
- OK. May God protect you.
00:41:44.320 --> 00:41:48.000
Did you hear?
There are a quite a few Customs cars.
00:42:58.720 --> 00:43:00.120
Untie them!
00:43:05.120 --> 00:43:07.120
They're full, all right!
00:43:10.400 --> 00:43:12.600
- Can I see?
- Yes, they're full.
00:43:17.240 --> 00:43:18.760
What's the selling price?
00:43:20.160 --> 00:43:22.200
- How many?
- I don't sell for credit.
00:43:22.400 --> 00:43:24.040
I'll pay you cash.
00:43:24.240 --> 00:43:27.440
We pay, we take them
and you load them.
00:43:27.800 --> 00:43:30.560
Someone has already
ordered quite a few...
00:43:33.160 --> 00:43:35.800
so I can't give you the whole lot.
00:43:36.120 --> 00:43:38.360
- Half then?
- OK.
00:43:39.240 --> 00:43:41.360
Start loading.
00:43:43.960 --> 00:43:48.160
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...
00:43:48.440 --> 00:43:51.800
- There are 20 missing.
- Bring the missing 20!
00:43:51.960 --> 00:43:53.400
There are 74 here.
00:43:53.640 --> 00:43:58.160
Load up fast, we need to go!
The assholes are out and about.
00:43:58.920 --> 00:44:00.120
Move it!
00:44:07.160 --> 00:44:08.520
Take this one.
00:44:10.240 --> 00:44:11.480
Here.
00:44:14.880 --> 00:44:16.360
One more...
00:44:25.080 --> 00:44:28.080
OK, this vehicle is loaded!
00:44:44.600 --> 00:44:47.240
Lights ahead! Stop!
00:44:48.000 --> 00:44:51.440
- I'm not stopping!
- Looks like a Toyota!
00:44:52.760 --> 00:44:54.920
I'll occupy the whole road.
00:44:56.600 --> 00:44:59.040
Tell the guys behind to get ready.
00:45:02.880 --> 00:45:06.400
I can see a car that has stopped.
00:45:07.000 --> 00:45:08.720
Everyone get ready!
00:45:20.400 --> 00:45:22.960
You see the car?
Blind it!
00:45:30.240 --> 00:45:32.040
Oh, it's not a Customs car!
00:45:32.240 --> 00:45:36.000
Fuck, he scared the hell out of us!
00:46:28.040 --> 00:46:31.000
Anfani FM in Zinder on 100 MHz.
00:46:31.160 --> 00:46:34.080
Hello, Radio Anfani listeners!
00:46:34.280 --> 00:46:35.440
Today's subject
00:46:35.640 --> 00:46:39.200
is the consequences
of Nigeria's borders
00:46:39.400 --> 00:46:44.160
being closed to neighboring countries,
including Niger.
00:46:44.560 --> 00:46:46.840
The smugglers are living proof
00:46:47.040 --> 00:46:50.280
that it's our gasoline
that crosses the border,
00:46:50.480 --> 00:46:52.400
which they buy
and bring back here.
00:46:52.720 --> 00:46:55.200
True, it's illegal,
00:46:55.400 --> 00:47:01.280
but this gasoline
is welcomed by the population,
00:47:01.480 --> 00:47:03.880
because it makes life easier.
00:47:04.200 --> 00:47:08.120
At the gas station,
it's 600 francs a liter.
00:47:08.320 --> 00:47:12.240
On the black market, it's 300 francs.
00:47:12.560 --> 00:47:16.520
It's mainly youngsters
who go to the border.
00:47:17.200 --> 00:47:19.920
While our country is not progressing,
00:47:20.080 --> 00:47:21.960
youngsters have nothing to do.
00:47:22.280 --> 00:47:24.240
And someone who has no food,
00:47:24.400 --> 00:47:28.240
who spends a whole week
with nothing to eat,
00:47:28.440 --> 00:47:31.400
but who has the vigor of youth,
00:47:31.560 --> 00:47:34.080
it's no surprise he attacks people.
00:47:34.240 --> 00:47:35.640
And even worse,
00:47:35.800 --> 00:47:40.760
they become easy prey
for the terrorists that surround us.
00:47:40.920 --> 00:47:44.400
As soon as they offer them money,
they leave,
00:47:44.560 --> 00:47:48.040
because they feel abandoned
by their country,
00:47:48.320 --> 00:47:51.560
because the government
can't find them jobs.
00:47:51.880 --> 00:47:56.440
So youngsters look
for a way to survive
00:47:56.600 --> 00:47:58.600
that the State cannot provide.
00:47:58.840 --> 00:48:02.240
And overnight, the State loses them.
00:48:02.640 --> 00:48:05.400
As a youngster,
how do you view the situation?
00:48:05.720 --> 00:48:10.120
The biggest problem for youngsters
is unemployment.
00:48:10.800 --> 00:48:14.640
In Kara Kara, for example,
which is seen as a no-man's land,
00:48:14.960 --> 00:48:17.440
there are so many unemployed youngsters,
00:48:17.600 --> 00:48:21.600
and most of them have no civil status.
00:48:21.880 --> 00:48:25.600
They do physical work,
00:48:25.800 --> 00:48:28.400
but no one goes out there
00:48:28.560 --> 00:48:29.680
to see that.
00:48:29.840 --> 00:48:32.120
We're judged from afar.
00:48:34.600 --> 00:48:35.720
Where you going?
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:37.600
Over to the farm.
00:48:37.800 --> 00:48:39.720
Give 500 francs to Bawo.
00:48:41.240 --> 00:48:44.200
- This is for you.
- Thanks.
00:48:44.760 --> 00:48:46.360
See you soon.
00:48:48.520 --> 00:48:51.200
- Where are you going?
- To the farm.
00:48:55.000 --> 00:48:57.680
I'm in a hurry,
and you're going too slow.
00:48:57.880 --> 00:48:59.440
I take it nice and easy.
00:49:00.440 --> 00:49:04.000
I've been in here ages and you still
haven't reached my destination.
00:49:04.320 --> 00:49:05.880
You have to go faster.
00:49:06.320 --> 00:49:10.920
I want all of my passengers
to reach their destination safely.
00:49:11.120 --> 00:49:15.040
- Faster is better!
- Safety first.
00:49:15.240 --> 00:49:18.840
- There's not even music!
- Why no music?
00:49:19.640 --> 00:49:21.280
Sure there's music...
00:49:22.280 --> 00:49:26.600
But my radio's not working right now.
00:49:27.680 --> 00:49:29.760
- So that's why there's no music?
- Exactly.
00:49:30.960 --> 00:49:33.000
But I'll get it fixed soon, God willing.
00:49:37.720 --> 00:49:41.280
The gasoline
that smugglers bring to the city
00:49:41.680 --> 00:49:46.720
is our own gasoline
that they buy back at the border.
00:49:47.400 --> 00:49:48.720
Everybody knows it.
00:49:48.920 --> 00:49:51.800
It's a debate on Radio Anfani.
00:49:52.680 --> 00:49:55.640
About gasoline smuggling.
00:49:57.160 --> 00:50:01.800
The biggest problem for youngsters
is having no work.
00:50:02.360 --> 00:50:04.320
- Hence their behavior?
- Yes.
00:50:05.160 --> 00:50:08.240
When the refinery opened,
00:50:08.640 --> 00:50:12.840
they said it would create jobs
for youngsters.
00:50:13.040 --> 00:50:15.360
But so far, nothing.
00:50:16.080 --> 00:50:21.320
With the election coming,
politicians will make tons of promises.
00:50:21.520 --> 00:50:24.680
But they never keep them.
It's all idle talk.
00:50:25.480 --> 00:50:28.160
- It's all about politics.
- Yes, today's politics.
00:50:28.360 --> 00:50:29.920
Same politics everywhere.
00:50:30.400 --> 00:50:35.960
But I also feel
that we youngsters are at fault.
00:50:36.120 --> 00:50:37.840
You're right.
00:50:39.600 --> 00:50:42.600
Because at 2,000 francs,
our votes are cheap!
00:50:42.800 --> 00:50:44.640
It's practically nothing!
00:51:32.360 --> 00:51:38.440
While fighting a guy in Tudun James,
he cut me here.
00:51:38.880 --> 00:51:43.280
This one is a stab wound,
also in Tudun James.
00:51:46.360 --> 00:51:53.640
Then there are the ones on my forehead,
all from fights.
00:52:10.360 --> 00:52:14.200
A guy took out a knife
and threatened to slit my throat.
00:52:14.400 --> 00:52:18.440
I raised my arm in defense
and he cut me here.
00:52:21.640 --> 00:52:24.840
This other scar
was from a broken bottle.
00:52:29.000 --> 00:52:32.040
Tudun James
is a very dangerous place.
00:52:32.760 --> 00:52:35.120
They mug and kill people.
00:52:35.440 --> 00:52:37.520
Many people live in fear.
00:52:38.520 --> 00:52:43.640
I want people to group together
so our community can live in peace.
00:52:43.840 --> 00:52:47.000
To prevent fights breaking out,
00:52:47.320 --> 00:52:48.720
which put dozens in jail.
00:52:48.920 --> 00:52:52.760
You fight to get by
and risk being arrested over nothing.
00:52:53.360 --> 00:52:57.400
Or you stay shut indoors.
00:52:57.600 --> 00:52:59.240
That isn't progress.
00:52:59.440 --> 00:53:02.200
So we have to keep the bad guys out.
00:53:03.280 --> 00:53:06.440
You saw how our friend
had her throat cut?
00:53:07.000 --> 00:53:10.760
It's terrible.
And we still don't know who did it.
00:53:11.080 --> 00:53:16.880
Nobody cares about free women.
00:53:17.200 --> 00:53:21.960
Since the day of her murder,
00:53:22.680 --> 00:53:24.560
almost three months ago,
00:53:24.760 --> 00:53:27.680
nobody has come to investigate.
00:53:27.880 --> 00:53:31.080
But the moment a gangster or
a drug dealer is reported in Tudun James,
00:53:31.280 --> 00:53:34.800
the Judiciary Police or Crime Squad
00:53:35.000 --> 00:53:37.280
turn up in their dozens.
00:53:37.640 --> 00:53:41.840
Why didn't they come
when that poor girl was murdered?
00:53:42.120 --> 00:53:46.080
We free women would have been
reassured that people care.
00:53:46.280 --> 00:53:50.640
A single patrol car
for the murder of a woman!
00:53:50.840 --> 00:53:53.240
And this happened in our home,
00:53:55.200 --> 00:53:56.480
among us,
00:53:56.800 --> 00:53:58.040
in front of us...
00:53:58.680 --> 00:54:03.440
Look, I've noted your grievances.
I'll pass them on to the concerned.
00:54:03.760 --> 00:54:08.080
I'll even repeat them
word for word to the Prosecutor.
00:54:53.320 --> 00:54:55.000
Salissou Cikara!
00:54:56.320 --> 00:54:58.080
Salissou Cikara!
00:55:04.760 --> 00:55:09.960
Before you went to jail,
we spoke about starting
00:55:10.200 --> 00:55:11.480
a security firm.
00:55:11.640 --> 00:55:14.680
Whatever work you want to do,
00:55:14.840 --> 00:55:17.920
you need money.
00:55:18.080 --> 00:55:24.560
We'll need uniforms, boots, berets
00:55:24.760 --> 00:55:28.360
and all the accessories
00:55:28.560 --> 00:55:30.960
that will be necessary
00:55:31.160 --> 00:55:34.080
to found our security firm.
00:55:35.320 --> 00:55:38.080
We'll need money we don't have.
00:55:38.280 --> 00:55:41.920
So we've decided to work hard to get it.
00:55:42.200 --> 00:55:48.080
With the Hercules, PGG
and Pachansas guys,
00:55:48.280 --> 00:55:54.680
we've all started working at a quarry
00:55:54.920 --> 00:55:58.880
to buy what we need.
00:55:59.080 --> 00:56:03.680
We hope to have the firm running
before you're all freed.
00:56:04.000 --> 00:56:06.160
We'll contribute, too.
00:56:06.360 --> 00:56:11.200
- From jail?
- Here's our contribution.
00:56:11.400 --> 00:56:13.200
Bracelets!
00:56:13.760 --> 00:56:15.440
That's good. I'll sell them.
00:56:15.680 --> 00:56:19.960
They'll bring in some money.
00:56:20.680 --> 00:56:23.040
It'll go into the kitty!
00:56:23.400 --> 00:56:31.000
Once we have enough,
we'll start our company.
00:56:31.560 --> 00:56:34.560
It's aid that we're bringing
to ourselves.
00:56:34.760 --> 00:56:36.880
Bit by bit.
00:56:37.240 --> 00:56:40.600
We'll do it by ourselves.
00:56:41.080 --> 00:56:43.280
It's gonna happen!
00:56:43.440 --> 00:56:44.880
Say hi to everyone!
00:56:45.040 --> 00:56:46.560
For sure.
00:56:55.360 --> 00:57:03.000
I want to talk
about our current situation.
00:57:04.760 --> 00:57:07.040
It's up to us to change.
00:57:08.080 --> 00:57:13.360
Zinder is seen as the black sheep
of this country.
00:57:13.720 --> 00:57:17.680
This jail proves that: it was built
for us, for our brothers and sisters.
00:57:18.000 --> 00:57:22.080
And if not your own brothers,
your neighbor's brothers!
00:57:23.080 --> 00:57:27.240
It's always us inside these walls,
00:57:27.560 --> 00:57:31.720
so we need to learn our lesson
and put a stop to that.
00:57:31.920 --> 00:57:37.040
Those of you who are in jail
for the first time, or the second time,
00:57:37.240 --> 00:57:42.480
pull yourselves together
and really think about changing.
00:57:42.720 --> 00:57:48.440
New openings are there for the taking.
00:57:48.680 --> 00:57:53.360
There's a new security firm being set up.
00:57:53.800 --> 00:57:55.800
Our friends on the outside
00:57:56.000 --> 00:58:01.600
are putting this project
together right now.
00:58:02.480 --> 00:58:04.560
The business is up and running, guys.
00:58:04.760 --> 00:58:08.040
You have to believe me.
00:58:08.320 --> 00:58:12.760
So for anyone who's interested,
there's an opening.
00:58:13.080 --> 00:58:18.400
The first one of you to get out
must get in touch with Siniya.
00:58:18.560 --> 00:58:20.720
Everybody knows him.
00:58:33.040 --> 00:58:38.200
I was at the prison
and Cikara gave me these bracelets.
00:58:39.480 --> 00:58:44.280
Our friends want us to sell them
and put the money in the kitty.
00:58:44.600 --> 00:58:47.640
They're engraved
with the name of our palais.
00:58:47.840 --> 00:58:50.840
- So we'll sell them.
- Understood.
00:58:51.040 --> 00:58:55.600
Even if they're not freed,
they'll be proud of helping out.
00:58:56.160 --> 00:58:58.440
Anyway, we're sure they'll be freed.
00:58:58.760 --> 00:59:02.040
We need to get everything ready
for the project
00:59:02.440 --> 00:59:04.400
before the end of the month.
00:59:05.040 --> 00:59:10.680
I'll be expecting each of you
to contribute in his own way, too.
00:59:10.880 --> 00:59:17.440
We'll train like we're in the army,
so you'll have to shave that beard off.
00:59:17.640 --> 00:59:23.040
I'm not kidding.
Get rid of that beard fast!
00:59:23.240 --> 00:59:26.400
I'll do it once the business is going.
01:01:02.720 --> 01:01:04.120
Do I hit it here?
01:01:24.360 --> 01:01:28.120
It's the Malan Garba order.
He wants small stones.
01:01:28.440 --> 01:01:31.160
- Like this?
- I'd like them a little smaller.
01:01:32.040 --> 01:01:34.520
A bit smaller?
OK.
01:01:37.600 --> 01:01:40.400
Let's raise the load price
to 1,250 or 1,500 francs.
01:01:40.600 --> 01:01:43.640
This work is too hard!
01:01:43.920 --> 01:01:47.600
It's the price of pain!
Illia doesn't understand that.
01:01:47.800 --> 01:01:50.600
- No, he doesn't.
- It takes strength and pain!
01:01:52.720 --> 01:01:55.200
Great! Finish my load!
01:01:57.080 --> 01:01:58.600
Empty it in.
01:02:05.080 --> 01:02:07.400
- Good.
- Bring the barrow to the left.
01:02:28.560 --> 01:02:32.360
- Let's move it!
- It's almost prayer time.
01:02:33.200 --> 01:02:36.640
- That's true.
- The call to prayer has started.
01:02:49.000 --> 01:02:49.920
Watch your step.
01:02:50.560 --> 01:02:52.800
Yeah, otherwise we could fall.
01:03:02.520 --> 01:03:06.360
- How are things at home?
- Welcome home. How was work?
01:03:06.560 --> 01:03:10.040
I'm glad to be back.
I'm exhausted.
01:03:12.080 --> 01:03:15.080
Fetch some water for my bath.
01:03:15.240 --> 01:03:16.800
It's prayer time, too.
01:03:16.960 --> 01:03:19.600
- Was work hard?
- Yeah, I'm beat.
01:03:21.000 --> 01:03:23.880
We have six loads to deliver,
01:03:26.360 --> 01:03:31.600
so I broke and broke and broke rocks.
01:03:31.840 --> 01:03:34.120
Leave the bowl in the bucket.
01:04:25.320 --> 01:04:28.760
There are also children in Tudun James.
01:04:29.240 --> 01:04:31.040
What can you tell me about them?
01:04:31.240 --> 01:04:33.840
In Tudun James,
01:04:34.720 --> 01:04:38.640
some things scare me,
others fill me with sadness.
01:04:39.120 --> 01:04:40.560
First of all...
01:04:42.760 --> 01:04:44.920
there are the kids.
01:04:45.560 --> 01:04:51.120
Or rather, the teenage girls.
01:04:52.120 --> 01:04:58.800
Seeing them work as prostitutes
fills me with pity.
01:04:59.840 --> 01:05:04.120
And you see old men going to them.
01:05:05.400 --> 01:05:08.960
They're the same age as their daughters,
even their granddaughters!
01:05:09.240 --> 01:05:12.760
They go to them
because the girls need money.
01:05:13.280 --> 01:05:17.360
All girls of barely 15, 16 years old.
01:05:28.840 --> 01:05:31.480
A lady came and took me to Nigeria.
01:05:31.680 --> 01:05:35.200
I was at home cooking.
She said she wanted to take me away.
01:05:35.480 --> 01:05:42.960
I told her I couldn't go with her
without my mom's approval.
01:05:43.200 --> 01:05:49.680
When I told my mom,
she asked what I would do there.
01:05:49.880 --> 01:05:52.600
The lady said she sold beer,
01:05:52.880 --> 01:05:55.800
and that I would be helping her
01:05:55.960 --> 01:05:59.160
in her work.
01:06:00.000 --> 01:06:04.640
My mom said no problem.
01:06:04.840 --> 01:06:09.600
She said a prayer for me
and told me to call her after a week,
01:06:09.800 --> 01:06:14.080
to tell her whether
everything was alright.
01:06:14.280 --> 01:06:18.000
And if it wasn't,
I was to come back home.
01:06:18.520 --> 01:06:21.760
And if it was, I was to stay.
01:06:22.200 --> 01:06:26.480
A few days after getting there,
my phone disappeared.
01:06:27.000 --> 01:06:28.280
I believed it had been stolen.
01:06:28.680 --> 01:06:33.720
I found out the lady had taken it
to stop me from calling my family.
01:06:34.600 --> 01:06:39.440
I asked her what she wanted from me
and she said it wasn't selling beer.
01:06:39.760 --> 01:06:42.360
And she told me she was a prostitute.
01:06:42.640 --> 01:06:46.320
I said, "A prostitute?"
And she said, "Yes."
01:06:46.760 --> 01:06:50.920
I was so naive to believe she sold beer.
01:06:51.520 --> 01:06:54.480
Do you plan on going home now?
01:06:55.280 --> 01:06:57.320
I want to go to another country.
01:06:57.520 --> 01:07:00.520
I would prefer it
if you went back home.
01:07:01.280 --> 01:07:02.920
At your home...
01:07:03.400 --> 01:07:04.880
it would be better.
01:07:05.400 --> 01:07:09.600
- And then go somewhere else?
- No, stay there.
01:07:09.920 --> 01:07:12.840
- Go back home?
- And tell your mom everything.
01:07:13.040 --> 01:07:14.440
Why?
01:07:14.640 --> 01:07:20.400
Because if you leave
and something bad happens to you,
01:07:21.000 --> 01:07:23.880
your mom and family won't know about it.
01:07:24.080 --> 01:07:26.640
I agree, that's not good.
01:07:27.080 --> 01:07:32.000
Then you can try to get married,
open a store or even go back to school.
01:07:32.200 --> 01:07:34.200
- Back to school...
- Exactly.
01:07:55.600 --> 01:07:58.600
Daddy?
They're asking for money for school.
01:08:00.560 --> 01:08:03.040
- They're asking what?
- Money for school.
01:08:03.240 --> 01:08:06.880
- OK, how much?
- 1,100 francs.
01:08:07.120 --> 01:08:08.440
For you, too?
01:08:09.520 --> 01:08:13.400
All right, so please God.
01:08:14.680 --> 01:08:17.920
- Where's Zaneidou?
- He's at Mama's.
01:08:18.240 --> 01:08:20.960
He bought that candy
that hurts your mouth,
01:08:21.160 --> 01:08:23.480
that you're not supposed to buy.
01:08:25.640 --> 01:08:27.520
- And he bought some?
- Yes.
01:08:29.600 --> 01:08:30.880
So?
01:08:31.720 --> 01:08:33.320
Is it break time?
01:08:34.800 --> 01:08:36.760
We told you not to buy that stuff.
01:08:36.960 --> 01:08:39.840
- It's only 25 francs!
- We forbade you.
01:08:40.320 --> 01:08:41.440
Give it here.
01:08:41.760 --> 01:08:45.200
We forbade you, but we give you money
and you buy it anyway!
01:08:45.920 --> 01:08:49.240
You hid the candy!
01:08:50.320 --> 01:08:51.800
Which teacher is selling it?
01:08:52.000 --> 01:08:54.240
- It's not a teacher.
- Who then?
01:08:54.440 --> 01:08:55.800
Girl students.
01:08:56.200 --> 01:08:59.840
- Can't you denounce them?
- She buys it, too!
01:09:00.040 --> 01:09:03.760
You can die eating this.
Do you want to die?
01:09:04.920 --> 01:09:07.960
Then stop eating the stuff!
01:09:08.600 --> 01:09:09.960
- Daddy? Daddy?
- Yes?
01:09:10.160 --> 01:09:12.080
They say five children died.
01:09:12.280 --> 01:09:13.200
Did you hear that?
01:09:13.400 --> 01:09:17.160
Five children died
and you're still eating it!
01:09:17.360 --> 01:09:20.560
You want to die young, is that it?
01:09:44.960 --> 01:09:46.600
Going into the bush?
01:09:54.600 --> 01:09:56.920
- How're things?
- Good.
01:10:02.520 --> 01:10:04.440
The car's full of jerrycans!
01:10:09.280 --> 01:10:12.080
The big departure!
Put this in front.
01:10:12.680 --> 01:10:15.080
- Take me with you.
- You serious?
01:10:16.240 --> 01:10:18.120
Next time.
01:10:20.320 --> 01:10:21.800
Bye!
01:10:23.400 --> 01:10:24.640
Good luck!
01:10:28.200 --> 01:10:30.760
God be with you!
01:10:36.440 --> 01:10:38.160
We have two patrol cars on our tail!
01:10:38.520 --> 01:10:39.840
Let's beat it.
01:10:40.160 --> 01:10:44.160
- There's gas leaking out.
- He didn't close it properly.
01:10:49.400 --> 01:10:51.560
Send a motorbike out to recce.
01:10:51.920 --> 01:10:54.160
And another to follow Customs.
01:10:57.760 --> 01:11:01.760
- Do we make a detour?
- No, stay on the road.
01:11:02.640 --> 01:11:05.960
There might be a track to town.
I'll phone and check.
01:11:08.800 --> 01:11:10.480
Any news?
01:11:12.920 --> 01:11:15.520
So there are definitely two patrol cars.
01:11:15.920 --> 01:11:17.560
Two cars, right?
01:11:18.280 --> 01:11:20.160
A military patrol, too?
01:11:20.480 --> 01:11:24.360
Shit!
We'll be here longer than planned.
01:11:25.680 --> 01:11:28.240
There are two solutions:
01:11:28.520 --> 01:11:32.280
either we unload
here and go back to town empty,
01:11:33.000 --> 01:11:35.320
or we take last time's route...
01:11:37.120 --> 01:11:39.800
and come out by the bridge.
- Let's do that.
01:11:40.000 --> 01:11:41.840
We detour to the bridge.
01:11:42.440 --> 01:11:45.200
- What if we drive with no headlamps?
- In the dark?
01:11:45.400 --> 01:11:46.400
Yes.
01:11:47.760 --> 01:11:51.760
- Do you have a flashlight?
- On my cell.
01:11:52.920 --> 01:11:56.880
- You could use that.
- I'll check with Malan.
01:11:59.680 --> 01:12:06.680
If we run into them,
we group together to block their way.
01:12:07.040 --> 01:12:08.840
We occupy the whole road.
01:13:19.120 --> 01:13:22.640
You bunch of assholes,
you're blocking the road!
01:13:22.840 --> 01:13:25.760
You insolent shit!
How dare you insult us!
01:13:31.000 --> 01:13:33.720
CUSTOMS
01:14:12.800 --> 01:14:15.080
The inter-regional committee
01:14:15.240 --> 01:14:18.520
put in place
by the Niger Customs Department
01:14:18.680 --> 01:14:22.280
carried out a lightning raid
last Saturday in Zinder
01:14:22.440 --> 01:14:26.640
during which illegal
smuggled gasoline was seized.
01:14:26.800 --> 01:14:33.040
We seized 868
25-liter jerrycans of gasoline,
01:14:33.560 --> 01:14:38.680
and ten smugglers' vehicles.
01:16:12.680 --> 01:16:14.920
The hearing has started.
01:16:24.160 --> 01:16:28.200
For The State
versus Abdoul Karim Salissou, aka Cikara
01:16:29.640 --> 01:16:33.600
the court will give its verdict.
01:16:33.760 --> 01:16:37.640
Regarding all parties,
01:16:37.800 --> 01:16:42.240
according to criminal law
in the first instance, the court declares
01:16:42.400 --> 01:16:46.640
that the accused is found guilty
of all charges against him.
01:16:46.920 --> 01:16:50.960
He is sentenced
to three years' imprisonment
01:16:51.120 --> 01:16:54.960
and a fine of 20,000 francs.
Appeal within ten days.
01:16:55.560 --> 01:16:57.240
The court declares
01:16:57.400 --> 01:17:00.280
that you are guilty of all charges.
01:17:01.000 --> 01:17:05.000
You're sentenced
to three years' imprisonment
01:17:06.040 --> 01:17:08.280
and a fine of 20,000 francs.
01:18:49.560 --> 01:18:53.080
Move it if you want to become
good security guards!
01:19:48.720 --> 01:19:50.680
In quintal position!
Quintals!
01:19:51.000 --> 01:19:52.200
Up!
01:19:55.440 --> 01:19:56.640
Down!
01:20:02.240 --> 01:20:03.440
Up!
01:20:04.600 --> 01:20:06.160
Leapfrog position!
01:20:06.320 --> 01:20:08.240
OK, jump!
01:20:19.200 --> 01:20:20.240
At ease!
01:20:20.400 --> 01:20:21.600
Attention!
01:20:22.000 --> 01:20:23.040
At ease!
01:20:23.200 --> 01:20:24.480
Attention!
01:20:31.760 --> 01:20:33.080
Quick march!
01:20:34.320 --> 01:20:35.920
One, two!
01:20:36.800 --> 01:20:38.240
One, two!
01:20:38.800 --> 01:20:40.240
One, two!
01:20:43.400 --> 01:20:45.840
Call on God before starting
01:20:46.760 --> 01:20:49.200
Ask Him to answer our wishes
01:20:49.800 --> 01:20:52.560
May this song accompany us
01:20:53.680 --> 01:20:55.920
May this song accompany us
01:20:57.040 --> 01:20:58.200
On tough days
01:20:59.840 --> 01:21:00.840
Day and night...
