Across the world people who live on the edge are the dispossessed - those left behind by globalization. True? Not quite. There's one country where it's the middle class who are on the edge - Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. Despite Chavez's recent setback at the polls, many thousands of professional people have fled the country, and some are still wondering if they should emigrate.
Like many of their friends, young doctors Yurani and Florencio like to think of themselves as wanting to care for the poor as much as the rich. They even approve of many of Chavez's policies, believing they've helped the poor. Like millions across Latin America, they hoped for a regional answer to globalization, and saw hope in the triumph of leaders like Kirchner, Lula, Morales, Bachelet and Correa. Maybe socialism wasn't defeated after all.
But now they believe Chavez may have gone too far. They think the Chavistas pose the middle class with a fundamental choice: help us model the country on Castro's Cuba, or quit before it's too late.
Can socialism still be an alternative to American-led globalization? Or will it always lead to dictatorship? Should they stay and fight for what they believe, or give up before it's too late and leave for Miami? For Life, Yurani and Florencio spent 10 days travelling Venezuela to help find the answer.
'Life 6 is a wonderfully educational series that presents the viewers with the dilemmas faced by specific individuals in the socio-historical and economic context of their communities in the midst of an increasingly globalized world. The tremendous value of this series is that, in the brief thirty minutes that each episode lasts, it captures the complexities of the lives of those in it as they face Western influence that force them to reassert, defend, or challenge their local and/or individual identities, cultures, governance, wealth distribution, and practices of achieving justice and reconciliation--to name a few...Life 6 represents these issues in an objective and analytical way that will--without question--lead into a discussion and debate about them by academics and lay audiences alike.' 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.999
[sil.]
00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.999
Globalization is making the
rich world even richer.
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:14.999
But billions are locked out. They\'re living on
the edge between the rich world and the poor.
00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:19.999
They face tough choices.
They want to join the party.
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.999
Globalization gives the poor chance to migrate and
work for the rich. They\'re called economic migrants.
00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:29.999
But in one country, the economic
migrants and the middle class,
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:35.000
men and women like Yurani and Florencio Quintero, they
must decide, should they stay, or should they go?
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.999
[music]
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.999
Caracas in South America from
high up Venezuela\'s capital
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:19.999
looks an ethylic prosperous place.
But this is a divided city
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.999
where rich and poor (inaudible)
together unhappily.
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:29.999
Quote between them the middle classes face a
difficult choice. Many claim that president\'s taken
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.999
a wrong turn trying to eradicate poverty.
They fear he\'ll turn
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.000
into another Fidel Castro. They wonder
if they should quit while they can.
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.999
[music]
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.999
Venezuela\'s biggest children\'s hospital.
Looking after these kids
00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.999
is 27 year old, Yurani Gómez
Gutiérrez, the junior doctor.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.999
She\'s passionate about her work, and dedicated
to the hospital, but life in Caracas is tough.
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:09.999
Maybe the city will sing happy
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:14.999
but it\'s not. It\'s not but it\'s too
much violence, too much robbery,
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:19.999
insecure, you can be kidnapped,
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.999
you\'re stressful all the time. So I think
of this not happy. For me it\'s not.
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.999
And I feel that the people around
me sometimes they\'re not happy.
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.999
Like many professionals in Venezuela,
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.999
Yurani is thinking about
going abroad to work.
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.999
Hundreds of thousands have already
gone including her two brothers.
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.999
That\'s right. They leave the country
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.999
for a better way to live in. They have a
family. They have to support their family,
00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:59.999
they found in another
countries better education
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.999
for their children. Their children
can walk in the street safely.
00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.999
They can live safely in another countries.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:14.999
Venezuela, it would always be my home. Even, if I
go to another country, it would always be my home.
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:19.999
But it\'s not just love of her country
that would make quitting a tough call.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.999
Yurani\'s father is very sick with cancer
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.999
and she wants to be near him.
Even when I work so much,
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.999
and I go home only for a few
hours, I can see my dad every day.
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.999
And that\'s great. In another
country I can\'t do that.
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.999
I would be calling every day for the
phone, dad, dad, how do you feel?
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.999
I prefer to stay here
until he\'ll become better
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.999
which I don\'t think so or until he die.
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:59.999
Across town, one of Yurani\'s best friends
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.999
Florencio Quintero is about
to read one of his poems.
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.999
This gathering of young Venezuelan
poets is funded by the government.
00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.999
Among the appreciative audience or
his family who\'ve all been wrestling
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:20.000
with the middle class stay or go dilemma.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.999
[sil.]
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:39.999
We\'re not composing poetry,
Florencia works as a psychiatrist
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.999
in a public hospital. He
helps patients in crisis.
00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.999
Now he\'s facing one of his own. Of the
67 doctors, Florencio trained with 50
00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.999
have either stopped practicing or left the
country, becoming part of Venezuela\'s
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
middle class brain drain.
Florencio loves his job,
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
but finds it hard living on his salary, despite double
digit inflation, he hasn\'t had to pay rise in three years.
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
I\'m 27 years old.
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.999
I\'m a medical doctor and I… I still live in with my
parents because they don\'t have enough money to pay me
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.999
for my own place. So it is
very quite difficult is
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
uh… that the salaries are very, very, very
low, and the cost of life is very high.
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
So you have like a paradox
there, contradiction.
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.999
Florencio has made plans to practice as a doctor
in Spain, if need be, but he\'s still touring
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.999
and is much that keeps him in Venezuela.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
Should I stay or should I go? Uh…
Well, uh… I\'ve thinking that
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
so many times. Uh… Especially, when I focus
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
in the material aspects of
living here, for also we have
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
a lot of beautiful things
here in my country.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.999
Darling you got to let me know,
00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.999
Should I stay or should I go?
If you say that
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:14.999
you are mine, I\'ll be
here \'til the end of time
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.999
Should they stay or should they go?
Florencio and Yurani\'s dilemma
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.999
isn\'t just that of professionals tempted
by better salaries in the developed world.
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
It\'s also provoked by their president
Hugo Chavez, and his ideas
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
on fighting poverty.
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.999
[non-English narration]
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.999
Chavez was voted in as
Venezuela\'s president in 1999.
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.999
It\'s been a trouble period. The rally we filmed
the anniversary of a failed cue against him.
00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:58.000
[non-English narration]
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
Like some other leaders in Latin America,
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
Chavez sees socialism unfashionable elsewhere
as an alternative to globalization.
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
An oil rich Venezuela has the
catch to do something about it.
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
Industries have been nationalized.
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.999
Chavez has close ties with Castro\'s Cuba, and some
say he wants to remake Venezuela in its image.
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.999
The rhetoric is all class
warfare us and them.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
His supporters, and socialists
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
read are known as Chavezsters. They\'re
mostly drawn from the millions
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
who live on a few dollars a day, but these people,
the idea of leaving the country would seem bizarre.
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.999
[non-English narration]
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.999
But for many of Venezuela\'s middle classes,
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
Chavez is viewed with
suspicion or hostility.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
They worry about his Cubanization of the
country. Few of them vote for him anymore.
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.999
We board Florencio\'s family together
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:14.999
to watch Chavez\'s Sunday show. Maybe it
would help them decide whether to stay.
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:19.999
Hello President can run for up to 10 hours,
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.999
but it\'s canceled at the last
minute, the president has a cold.
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.999
The family tried to hide their disappointment.
They\'re not exactly regular viewers.
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.999
We are pretty sad because
we have… we were hoping
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:39.999
all… all this week alone to came
to Sunday to join us as a family,
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:44.999
and see each others talking,
and talking, and talking.
00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:49.999
Get the knowledge and then we…
… of this enlightenment. Yes.
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.999
Florencio\'s parents are also doctors.
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.999
And once they were big Chavez supporters.
But how\'s they became so disillusioned,
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.999
he did leave the country. Problem
was he found America even worse.
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.999
I went to the States, I
studied, I presented an exam,
00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:14.999
an exam which I passed to be
able to work there as uh…
00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.999
a surgical umm… assistance.
And I then decided
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.999
that I don\'t like the way they leave,
00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.999
and it was a problem for me to leave my wife,
and my family. They didn\'t want to leave.
00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.999
So I came back.
00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.999
And… and forget the thing. And we say, okay, well,
we\'re not to… we\'re not going to have this guy
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.999
for ever I hope.
00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:49.999
So the family understands Florencio\'s dilemma.
They\'ll support him if he stays or if he goes.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.999
[non-English narration]
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.999
I don\'t have anything against
him live in the country.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.999
Obviously, you always want to have your kids around.
But I think it is good to know other countries,
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:09.999
and there\'s something else. However, as a
family, I don\'t think, we\'re going to be better
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.999
than we are now, if would decided to go
abroad, not even as it is now in Venezuela.
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.999
[sil.]
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.999
Back at the Children\'s Hospital,
for an oil rich country,
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:29.999
the public hospitals here
can seem very rundown.
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:34.999
Yurani is doing her rounds. She loves working here,
but worries that some patients suffer unnecessarily.
00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.999
I feel sometimes that people
who shouldn\'t die dies.
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.999
People who could be rescued, they\'re not.
00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.999
And I can\'t do that anything for that. I… I feel that I
can\'t do anything because I don\'t have the medicine.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:54.999
I don\'t have the sources. But today, Yurani
has good news for one of her patients,
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:59.999
seven month old Leone,
here with his mom Leena.
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.999
Leone is well enough to go home. Perfect.
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:09.999
[sil.]
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:14.999
Picking Leena and baby up, her mom Betty.
Betty fled the troubles
00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:19.999
in neighboring Colombia. She\'s now a
Venezuelan citizen. Thanks to a Chavez reform.
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.999
Stories like hers, a strong
argument, doctors to stay.
00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:29.999
Betty lives in a squat in Caracas
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:34.999
with her six children, her grandchildren,
her husband, her sister, and her nephew.
00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:39.999
She\'s learned to read thanks
to a Chavez government scheme.
00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.999
And her family now has more free
health care. She has high praise
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.999
for doctors like Yurani and
the service they provide.
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.999
My grandson was in the
children\'s hospital for 13 days
00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.999
and he received good attention like the
tests which were done on his foot.
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.999
The doctors were taking good care of him.
He got his treatment without interruption.
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.999
In my opinion, he has improved a
100% because now there are things
00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.999
that we didn\'t have before.
00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:19.999
Betty\'s daughter says it\'s Hugo
Chavez0 who has helped improve
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:24.999
their life so much. I don\'t
see him as a bad president,
00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.999
but a good one. Nothing is perfect, but I wouldn\'t
say that everything is falling apart either.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:34.999
He has a many good things for
us, for all of Venezuelas.
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.999
Betty and Leena aren\'t alone
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.999
and support Hugo Chavez. It\'s rare, you hear a
word spoken against him here in the barrios.
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.999
The rich with their dollar accounts in
Miami villas find it easy to leave.
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.999
The middle class professionals
who care about the poor,
00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:59.999
it\'s a tougher dilemma.
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.999
So could Yurani and Florencio
would be convinced.
00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.999
We brought them along to see
if socialism in action.
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:14.999
[music]
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:19.999
Supporters say places like this community
center in Caracas is biggest slum bring
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.999
much needed services to the poorest. Yurani
in Florencio get a full guided tour,
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:29.999
and some hard sell on how Chavez is
making life better for the people.
00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:34.999
[non-English narration]
00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:39.999
Built on a derelict site,
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.999
the center house is a modern health clinic,
worker\'s cooperatives, adult education classes,
00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:49.999
and a subsidized supermarket.
It\'s all funded directly
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.999
by a petroleum ministry,
rich on high oil prices.
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:59.999
The director, a former
teacher is a true believer.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.999
Until not let it go, the oil money
was used to benefit the rich.
00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.999
They enjoyed all the resources, and their
majority could only see the left overs
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:14.999
or small bits of that wealth. What we want is
to have a society where everyone improves.
00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.999
[music]
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.999
Alongside the free services and training,
there are classes on socialism,
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:29.999
and there are Cuban revolution is here too.
00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:34.999
The nurse leading the morning exercises
for the elderly, for example,
00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:39.999
and this doctor, one of
over 3,000 in the country.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.999
And these textile workers,
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:49.999
according to the government are combat
troops in the battle against capitalism.
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:54.999
[non-English narration]
00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:59.999
Sometimes, we use expressions more linked to the
military field than to the political field.
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.999
However, we believe that political and
the military share the same ground,
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.999
but that political is just another means to achieve
our goals. That is part of the war that we have.
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:14.999
Our two doctors are
impressed with the center,
00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:19.999
but there are concerns too. Good.
They have nice clinics.
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.999
They have this source
very clear, very pretty.
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:29.999
Why? I don\'t understand. The government
can do these with these new clinics,
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:34.999
and they can do the same with
the hospital with the old ones
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.999
which I work, which Florencio works too.
00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.999
For Florencio, the worry is that centers like these
are as much about indoctrination as education.
00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:49.999
For example, when I was talking
with them, then one fellow
00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.999
has started arguing with Yurani
and said, \"Well, because we have,
00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:59.999
why don\'t you have black and that\'s
only the two could lead us of worrying,
00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.999
gains the revolution or you have
brother and revolutionary brothers.
00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:09.999
And every thing that\'s why real. Uh…
Life is made of great tolerance.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.999
It\'s not all regurgitated Castro hear.
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.999
Chavez supporters say that they\'re trying to
find a third way, a distinctly Venezuelan
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.999
response to globalization. The
model is not so much Castro,
00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:29.999
a Simon Bolivar, the man who
liberated much of Latin America
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:34.999
from Spanish rule. His former house
00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:39.999
is one of Venezuela\'s big tourist attractions
with around 400,000 visitors a year.
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:44.999
According to Curator,
BerthaVasquez Bolivar is
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:49.999
as much a part of the present as the past.
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:54.999
Bolivar creates something
with our best heroes ideas.
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:59.999
He had brought us back to our Venezuela\'s
roads helping us understand before Bolivar,
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:04.999
there were nationalists
and independence ideas.
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:09.999
Bolivar\'s image has
escaped onto the streets
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:14.999
where it\'s almost as prevalent as that of
Chavez. The government sought some often
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:19.999
as inspiration for its policies. The
ideals for which Bolivar fought
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.999
are pretty much well life. We\'re still
fighting for of social justice,
00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:29.999
we\'re still fighting to be
equal, we\'re still fighting
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.999
to be independent, we\'re if… we\'re
still fighting to have sovereignty
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.999
over our own natural
resources, and the same
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.999
with this struggle to be able to come to
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:49.999
a United Latin America, United South
America that can stand itself
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:54.999
in front of the world. But say critics,
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.999
the president is simply appropriating
the past for his own purposes.
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.999
Of course, Chavez manipulates,
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.999
uh… the history of Bolivar.
He presents himself as the…
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:14.999
as the reincarnation of
all… all… same of Bolivar.
00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:19.999
But… but the thing is bullshit.
He even, he puts in…
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.999
in mouth of Bolivar. For I say that
he invents, he says, \"Bolivar said.\"
00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:29.999
Like he says, \"What do you want?\"
00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.999
He\'s… he re-writes the history of Bolivar.
But Chavez is simply
00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.999
the latest to interpret Bolivar and
his ideals plays and purposes,
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.999
and sympathizers say Bolivarian revolution
would at least be of Venezuelan response
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:49.999
to the bland uniformity
globalization can bring.
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.999
[music]
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.999
It\'s evening and Yurani is shopping
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.999
at a local supermarket. But she\'s
finding it tough to make ends meet.
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.999
Ideology may be one reason the
middle class choose to be Venezuela,
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.999
but the high cost of living doesn\'t
help, and it\'s not just luxuries.
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:19.999
For me, it\'s difficult to find
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.999
to buy the same things that I used to eat.
For me, that I\'m professional,
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:29.999
I can\'t imagine what is
that for the poor people
00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:34.999
who\'d they don\'t have uh…
the same salary that I do.
00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:39.999
What Yurani really wants is fresh milk.
00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:44.999
[non-English narration]
00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:49.999
[music]
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:54.999
It\'s over a year, since she\'s seen any,
00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:59.999
instead, powdered milk at a luxury price.
00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:04.999
I found this milk which is not fresh milk.
00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:09.999
You have to prepare with water.
Is this expensive?
00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:14.999
How much would you pay here in
dollars for this? $8 for this.
00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:19.999
It is less than one kilogram,
less than one kilogram
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:24.999
as you can see $8. Like Florencio,
00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:29.999
Yurani has to live with her parents to make ends meet.
Much as she loves them, she\'d like her own home,
00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:34.999
but she can\'t begin to imagine raising
a family when costs are so high.
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:39.999
Her mother\'s already seen two
sons leave for London and Japan.
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:44.999
Yet, she hopes Yurani will soon
seek a better life abroad.
00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:49.999
I wish you could go abroad.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.999
I can\'t see a good life for you here
even with all you have achieved.
00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:59.999
I worry you\'ll be stuck here forever.
Parents urging their children to leave
00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:04.999
dilemmas all around. The government admits
hundreds of thousands have already left Venezuela,
00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:09.999
not awful though it says like other
developing nations we can\'t compete
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:14.999
with rich countries tempting
our professionals away.
00:21:15.000 --> 00:21:19.999
They\'re going because better salaries
abroad. You see there in Spain,
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:24.999
there\'s a lack of doctors, and they\'re importing
doctors and they\'re paying very good salaries.
00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:29.999
Uh… They\'re finding more
advanced societies abroad.
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.999
And especially, the economic stimulus,
it\'s very important. We are not able
00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:39.999
to pay those doctors what we pay here in their
professional career, but you see that those doctors
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:44.999
have had a free education in Venezuela.
So we are in a way
00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:49.999
subsidizing the development
of the rich countries.
00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:54.999
But would leaving really be
practical for our two doctors?
00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:59.999
And for example… They\'ve come to see
Michele, a middle class professional
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:04.999
who is doing fine. Ironically,
she\'s doing fine running a website
00:22:05.000 --> 00:22:09.999
Iwanttoleave.com, full of
information about how to emigrate.
00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:14.999
When we started, we used to have 15,000
00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:19.999
umm… hits per day, and now we have
00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:24.999
60,000 hits per day. (inaudible). Triple
case, right? Yes Yes. Where is the place
00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:29.999
that… that let him against where
else to go primarily? Oh, the U.S,
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:34.999
of course, than kind of
Australia, and then Spain.
00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:39.999
You don\'t have… For
Yurani, there\'s a shock.
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:44.999
Most Western countries won\'t accept her doctor\'s
qualification. She would have to start work
00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:49.999
as a nurse. Maybe, you
have to go to one country,
00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.999
and you have to start working as a umm… paramedic.
May be, you have to start working as a paramedic.
00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:59.999
And then you can grow, and…
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.999
And take care into working… And getting… uh-huh,
and start working as a… as a doctor. Yes.
00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:09.999
As a doctor. Yes. You have to do a lot of sacrifices,
and you, and them. The parties haven\'t you sees at all,
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:14.999
you have to be very, very
sure on what you are doing.
00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:19.999
But uh… at the end, you will receive
umm… good things, and the end,
00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:24.999
it will be… it will worth the sacrifices.
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.999
Throwing away years of their specialist
training as doctors, it\'s a tough call.
00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:34.999
For Florencio, it\'s a political decision.
He\'s still hoping
00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:39.999
Venezuela can find social
justice without socialism,
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:44.999
and class warfare Cuban style.
00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:49.999
Here uh… the business is heavier
and we will have enough freedom
00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:54.999
and really begins to be a
socialistic place like Cuba.
00:23:55.000 --> 00:23:59.999
I think I will get out
of here, but right now,
00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:04.999
as the big story is right now, I
choose to stay in my country.
00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:09.999
Meantime, Yurani is still thinking
very seriously about going.
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:14.999
She could choose to go at any moment.
That\'s a particular decision
00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:19.999
that everyone has to make
referring to is our own desires,
00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:24.999
you always wish as you wish as you wish
money. Of course, maybe, it\'s very good
00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:29.999
to leave the country. Is you don\'t,
is your preference had about family,
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:34.999
laugh, friends, or whatever. Maybe,
you should think about to stay,
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:39.999
a separating out the decision
very particular for everyone.
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:44.999
Should I stay or should I go now?
00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:49.999
Should I stay or should I go now?
00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:54.999
If I go, there will be
trouble, And if I stay
00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:59.999
it will be double, So
come on and let me know
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:05.000
[music]
