Czech documentarian Jana Andert spent a total of eight months between 2014 and June 2017 in Iraq. She lived with an elite Army unit called the "Golden Division" at the front lines of the battle of Mosul, a city occupied by ISIS fighters. Andert went on a voluntary basis at her own expenses and without the support of one of the major news stations for which she usually shoots film and photographic material. She did not want be bound by any security rules. This documentary is a courageous testimony about a city in ruins that was robbed of its soul by one of the greatest catastrophes of our time.

00:02:07.999 --> 00:02:09.958
Stay here. Where are you going?
00:02:10.708 --> 00:02:12.125
Move them forward.
00:02:31.833 --> 00:02:34.833
From here we’ll continue
the attack on IS.
00:02:35.042 --> 00:02:36.875
Jasim, can you hear me?
00:02:37.625 --> 00:02:39.750
Jasim, keep going, mate.
00:02:40.833 --> 00:02:42.250
Here.
00:02:42.667 --> 00:02:47.375
We’ll attack IS from here
There’s 50 metres between us.
00:02:47.875 --> 00:02:49.999
The Iraqi army units are there.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.999
Hopefully we’ll reach
Prophet Jerjis Street.
00:02:53.083 --> 00:02:55.083
Our zone ends there. That’s it.
00:02:55.208 --> 00:02:57.000
Allawi, we’re going.
00:03:14.250 --> 00:03:17.083
Here’s a bucket and a canister,
quarter full.
00:03:17.208 --> 00:03:20.208
Turn it round and
pour it into the bucket. Fast!
00:03:28.999 --> 00:03:33.333
– What’s that? MAK 90?
– What our first platoon shoots.
00:03:37.958 --> 00:03:39.667
Broadcast, sir, broadcast!
00:03:42.083 --> 00:03:45.750
Where’s your position?
I’ve not seen you since morning.
00:03:45.999 --> 00:03:47.999
What do you mean, since morning?
00:03:48.917 --> 00:03:52.458
I’m here, sir. We set out
with the unit, like you wanted.
00:03:52.667 --> 00:03:55.667
We’re ready, we’re sitting
close by the steps.
00:04:26.667 --> 00:04:28.708
Come inside, it’ll explode!
00:04:30.792 --> 00:04:33.917
Go inside, go inside!
00:04:34.833 --> 00:04:37.042
One of the IS is inside that house.
00:04:37.875 --> 00:04:41.625
Tell the guys,
to leave the building, fast.
00:04:45.125 --> 00:04:50.042
Operation Zi-Qar, operation Zi-Qar,
Explosion, controlled explosion.
00:04:52.999 --> 00:04:57.083
Ali Abdul Hossein, leave the house!
Rapid action! Everybody hide!
00:05:00.417 --> 00:05:01.999
Ready.
00:05:08.083 --> 00:05:12.333
How’s the situation with you?
Has anything happened to anyone?
00:05:14.500 --> 00:05:16.292
The situation’s good, sir.
00:05:26.417 --> 00:05:28.250
Can you see over there?
00:05:28.458 --> 00:05:32.958
The roof opposite you, and the windows…
Now we’ll attack those houses.
00:06:11.208 --> 00:06:14.667
Come and have a look, sir.
00:06:19.708 --> 00:06:21.708
Look at that wire.
00:06:23.833 --> 00:06:25.375
No one’s allowed inside.
00:06:26.250 --> 00:06:30.500
No one should be in here, go away,
all of you. Don’t move anything!
00:06:30.708 --> 00:06:32.125
I’m just looking.
00:06:32.250 --> 00:06:36.250
We’ve finished here. Write on
the house there’s explosive here.
00:06:36.333 --> 00:06:37.999
We’ve already done it.
00:07:16.375 --> 00:07:19.500
There were IS members in this house.
00:07:19.833 --> 00:07:23.667
We found explosives belts
and the corpse of an IS member.
00:07:23.792 --> 00:07:25.999
We’re close to the Iraqi army units.
00:07:26.042 --> 00:07:29.167
We’ll reach the end
of our operation zone soon.
00:07:29.875 --> 00:07:32.667
These are the belts of
suicide bombers.
00:07:36.083 --> 00:07:38.958
The Iraqi army units
are in this direction.
00:07:38.999 --> 00:07:41.292
The IS communication centre was here.
00:07:41.417 --> 00:07:42.999
Now we control it here.
00:08:01.458 --> 00:08:05.500
I can’t find my 18-month daughter.
00:08:06.875 --> 00:08:08.417
May God grant you victory!
00:08:10.458 --> 00:08:12.458
May God grant you victory!
00:08:12.667 --> 00:08:14.333
Thank you, you’re kind.
00:08:14.999 --> 00:08:18.250
Film my father.
00:08:21.625 --> 00:08:25.999
Are there terrorists
from IS there still, uncle?
00:08:26.083 --> 00:08:31.417
– Just a few. Three or four.
– They’re in Zanjili.
00:08:33.625 --> 00:08:38.208
– Are there Arabs there, or foreigners?
– Arabs.
00:08:41.708 --> 00:08:46.250
Do you have any water?
God have mercy, just water, please.
00:08:47.167 --> 00:08:50.625
My leg is from IS,
I was hit by a shot from a mortar.
00:08:50.875 --> 00:08:52.750
During the stadium bombing.
00:08:52.833 --> 00:08:55.125
– What happened?
– A shot from a mortar.
00:08:55.250 --> 00:08:57.750
– When did it happen?
– 14 February.
00:08:58.292 --> 00:08:59.875
No, 14 April.
00:08:59.999 --> 00:09:02.375
He was there.
00:09:04.917 --> 00:09:07.042
Where did they fix your leg?
00:09:08.250 --> 00:09:10.667
– In hospital.
– Which hospital?
00:09:11.792 --> 00:09:15.667
Sister, I have to find my family.
Dad’s gone ahead, he’s ill.
00:09:18.250 --> 00:09:22.000
– Where’s your family? – Over there.
– Where were you hit?
00:09:22.125 --> 00:09:25.375
By a mortar. They all know me here,
we’re neighbours.
00:09:25.500 --> 00:09:27.625
– Where are you from?
– Mashhadan.
00:09:27.750 --> 00:09:30.833
– Where’s your ID?
– Here. They all know me here.
00:09:32.083 --> 00:09:34.417
I don’t care. Give me your ID.
00:09:34.625 --> 00:09:38.208
They’re my neighbours,
they all know me.
00:09:38.333 --> 00:09:41.625
– What’s your name?
– Jerjis Mahmoud Zaydan, mother Affrah.
00:09:41.750 --> 00:09:44.083
– That’s my father.
– Where were you born?
00:09:44.208 --> 00:09:46.917
18th May 1990. That’s my neighbour.
00:09:46.999 --> 00:09:49.500
Go, and watch out for mortars.
00:09:49.667 --> 00:09:54.667
I only said how I got my injury.
They wouldn’t believe me.
00:09:59.375 --> 00:10:02.999
– Go, will you.
– Come on, Dad, let’s go.
00:10:23.042 --> 00:10:24.625
He’s mad, isn’t he?
00:10:24.750 --> 00:10:26.917
I don’t know, I sent him to you…
00:10:28.125 --> 00:10:30.958
Is his ID forged?
00:10:32.042 --> 00:10:34.958
– It doesn’t have his surname.
– Tie him up.
00:10:38.250 --> 00:10:39.833
What’s your name?
00:10:40.625 --> 00:10:42.042
I’m Ziyad.
00:10:42.292 --> 00:10:44.708
Ziyad Khalaf Mahmoud.
00:10:46.042 --> 00:10:50.000
What is it? Where’s your family?
00:10:54.999 --> 00:10:59.625
Put him aside, don’t hurt him,
no one do anything to him.
00:11:03.999 --> 00:11:08.125
– Why are you huddling around him?
– God forgive me!
00:11:08.250 --> 00:11:11.250
The ice is here, sir.
00:11:11.375 --> 00:11:13.458
Leave him with the guys and go.
00:11:25.458 --> 00:11:28.042
He’s not IS, you could see on his back.
00:11:32.958 --> 00:11:35.792
– What brought you here?
– My family’s here.
00:11:35.917 --> 00:11:39.375
– What brought your family here?
– My mother’s disabled.
00:11:39.500 --> 00:11:41.708
So you brought her here?
00:11:42.750 --> 00:11:44.667
– Are you married?
– Yes.
00:11:44.792 --> 00:11:46.708
– Do you have children?
– Yes.
00:11:46.833 --> 00:11:48.458
– How many?
– Three.
00:11:49.750 --> 00:11:52.083
– How many wives do you have?
– One.
00:11:57.875 --> 00:11:59.999
Tie his hands with that cable.
00:12:01.167 --> 00:12:04.750
Look how dirty he is.
00:12:10.667 --> 00:12:14.417
Jusuf, we found him
hidden in the cellar.
00:12:14.500 --> 00:12:16.750
He’s not local, he’s from Shirqat.
00:12:18.250 --> 00:12:21.833
Place of issue Al-Horriya?
Where’s that?
00:12:23.458 --> 00:12:24.999
– In Shirqat?
– Yes.
00:12:25.417 --> 00:12:28.208
So why did you say you didn’t know?
00:12:28.833 --> 00:12:33.000
– I can’t read.
– You can’t read?
00:12:33.333 --> 00:12:34.999
Is he Iraqi or not?
00:12:47.625 --> 00:12:50.958
Why was he in the cellar?
Was he on the run?
00:12:56.250 --> 00:12:59.625
His address is in Shirqat,
what brought him here?
00:12:59.750 --> 00:13:01.750
My ID isn’t forged.
00:13:01.875 --> 00:13:04.833
So why are you here?
00:13:06.875 --> 00:13:09.417
They found you
in the cellar, you animal.
00:13:10.708 --> 00:13:14.333
And you were alone there.
00:13:20.667 --> 00:13:24.417
Your family left the cellar
and you stayed there?
00:13:27.042 --> 00:13:30.750
What’s your name?
Can I ask him what his name is?
00:13:33.333 --> 00:13:34.917
Don’t do it to him.
00:13:34.999 --> 00:13:37.458
– What’s your name?
– Ziyad.
00:13:45.500 --> 00:13:49.458
Get up, fast,
I don’t want to see you here again.
00:13:53.458 --> 00:13:55.875
Take the bottle of water.
00:13:56.417 --> 00:13:59.875
You’ve got a document, so leave.
00:14:12.292 --> 00:14:13.875
Where’s IS?
00:14:18.333 --> 00:14:19.917
Close.
00:14:21.458 --> 00:14:23.625
– Very close?
– 25 metres.
00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.999
See that door? They didn’t go into
that house, but they did in there.
00:14:34.792 --> 00:14:38.042
Have a look yourself.
They moved to that house.
00:14:39.375 --> 00:14:43.458
Go to that locked door.
00:15:10.792 --> 00:15:13.042
You’ll stay here, won’t you?
00:15:14.750 --> 00:15:17.083
Sit down, have a rest.
00:15:22.500 --> 00:15:24.000
You can’t walk?
00:15:24.333 --> 00:15:26.208
What’s happened to her?
00:15:36.999 --> 00:15:40.292
– What happened to her?
– They killed her husband.
00:15:40.958 --> 00:15:44.000
Terrorists from IS came…
00:15:44.333 --> 00:15:50.125
IS wanted her husband to join them,
but he refused.
00:15:50.708 --> 00:15:56.000
He was also informing
our security services.
00:15:56.333 --> 00:16:00.292
He gave us information,
and so they killed him.
00:16:00.833 --> 00:16:04.417
– When did they kill your husband?
– About a week ago.
00:16:04.625 --> 00:16:08.208
And since then they couldn‘t
wait for our troops to come.
00:16:08.333 --> 00:16:10.999
Today we came
and cleaned out this area.
00:16:15.875 --> 00:16:17.292
Should I stay at home?
00:16:27.875 --> 00:16:29.292
Go for a stretcher.
00:16:40.250 --> 00:16:42.833
– Need a bag?
– No, we don’t need no bag.
00:16:46.208 --> 00:16:48.042
– No more bag.
– No more bag
00:16:48.167 --> 00:16:49.292
Oh, one more bag.
00:16:51.708 --> 00:16:53.917
– Are you his father?
– Yes.
00:16:55.167 --> 00:16:58.999
– What’s happened. IS?
– IS.
00:17:07.208 --> 00:17:08.792
Bandage him.
00:18:53.042 --> 00:18:57.792
– Did this weapon belong to IS people?
– Yes, IS people.
00:18:58.083 --> 00:19:04.125
When we surrounded them yesterday,
they kept shouting “God is great”.
00:19:04.250 --> 00:19:06.250
and “Islamic state will prevail”.
00:19:06.375 --> 00:19:11.292
When we got close to one, he set himself
off. And this is what’s left of him.
00:19:12.167 --> 00:19:14.625
IS is finished in Iraq.
00:19:23.125 --> 00:19:24.708
My father.
00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:27.500
Hello?
00:19:28.750 --> 00:19:31.167
Hi, how are you?
00:19:31.667 --> 00:19:33.708
God be blessed, I’m fine.
00:19:38.667 --> 00:19:40.292
And how are you?
00:19:42.792 --> 00:19:44.208
We’re advancing.
00:19:45.083 --> 00:19:49.917
Really. And what’s new with you?
00:19:51.999 --> 00:19:55.833
We’re advancing, the offensive
continues. Otherwise nothing.
00:19:57.458 --> 00:20:02.833
Nothing’s happening,
we’re still advancing forwards.
00:20:07.167 --> 00:20:08.750
What?
00:20:14.875 --> 00:20:17.125
Jana’s here with me.
00:20:19.458 --> 00:20:23.250
Jana, a Czech journalist.
00:20:29.750 --> 00:20:33.458
Everything OK, God willing.
00:20:34.792 --> 00:20:37.625
Good, I’ll call you afterwards.
00:20:38.999 --> 00:20:41.917
OK, then I’ll call.
00:20:42.917 --> 00:20:44.333
OK, goodbye then.
00:20:47.999 --> 00:20:49.500
My father!
00:20:53.667 --> 00:20:55.875
Is he afraid for you?
00:20:55.999 --> 00:21:01.208
No, my father fought against Kuwait.
00:21:01.999 --> 00:21:04.333
And against Iran.
00:21:04.458 --> 00:21:07.833
During the Iran-Iraq war.
00:21:07.999 --> 00:21:15.875
Now he’s older, so he stayed at home.
Otherwise he’s like me, a lion, strong.
00:21:18.042 --> 00:21:22.625
– Is your mother afraid?
– No, she’s not afraid.
00:21:22.750 --> 00:21:27.292
My mother told me to go and fight IS.
00:21:27.417 --> 00:21:31.458
If I and the others weren’t fighting,
they’d go to Baghdad.
00:21:53.333 --> 00:21:55.167
My husband and son stayed there.
00:21:55.292 --> 00:21:57.833
A sniper began shooting,
so they went back.
00:21:57.958 --> 00:21:59.833
We managed to escape, they didn‘t.
00:21:59.958 --> 00:22:02.042
We’re afraid they’ll cut their throats.
00:22:02.167 --> 00:22:07.292
Please free them.
May God protect you.
00:22:09.250 --> 00:22:12.875
Yes, there are snipers there.
May God protect you.
00:22:19.875 --> 00:22:22.125
– Leave me alone.
– Come fast.
00:22:24.500 --> 00:22:28.250
Bastards, deserters.
00:22:29.167 --> 00:22:34.999
They’re trying to scare us,
they’ve completely scared us.
00:22:41.875 --> 00:22:44.083
Go, take care of her.
00:22:44.292 --> 00:22:48.292
– What’s happened?
– She was dizzy.
00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:35.958
Jana, we’ve got pudding here.
We’ve put it in the freezer to freeze.
00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:37.708
Then we put this on it.
00:23:42.208 --> 00:23:45.958
There‘s C4 and here’s a magnet.
00:23:46.167 --> 00:23:47.750
Here’s a detonator.
00:23:47.875 --> 00:23:52.375
You light it with a lighter,
and throw it. What does it do?
00:23:53.958 --> 00:23:58.917
Go and have a look in that house,
if someone’s there. Run!
00:23:59.500 --> 00:24:02.792
– Cover me.
– Run.
00:24:30.208 --> 00:24:33.292
– Mohammad, what they are doing?
– A bomb.
00:24:44.333 --> 00:24:46.042
Good day, sir.
00:24:46.167 --> 00:24:51.625
I went into the house and
up the stairs. Still standing.
00:24:51.917 --> 00:24:53.667
Mind your own business.
00:24:53.792 --> 00:24:59.167
I went into the house
and heard some mysterious sounds.
00:24:59.500 --> 00:25:01.708
Some movement, so I ran away.
00:25:02.042 --> 00:25:05.500
It would be better
if you threw it on their heads.
00:25:11.000 --> 00:25:12.500
Give me some water.
00:25:14.999 --> 00:25:18.833
I only want to know
who hit me on the back.
00:25:18.958 --> 00:25:23.167
He had a truncheon
and he hit me on the back with it.
00:25:23.250 --> 00:25:26.999
You talk too much.
Take it and run.
00:25:30.375 --> 00:25:31.958
Run, you hero.
00:25:32.125 --> 00:25:33.708
Who hit him on the back?
00:25:34.625 --> 00:25:37.999
– Someone from the army?
– No, someone from IS.
00:26:32.333 --> 00:26:34.750
There might be a trap there.
00:26:36.917 --> 00:26:38.333
Come back!
00:26:39.250 --> 00:26:41.999
I’m telling you, come back!
00:27:06.667 --> 00:27:08.625
– Kalashnikovs?
– Yes, Kalashnikovs.
00:27:29.208 --> 00:27:34.083
They used them as human shields
against the Iraqi advance.
00:27:34.417 --> 00:27:38.292
– How long have they been here?
– Almost a week.
00:27:39.208 --> 00:27:44.208
Without food, water, medical care.
00:27:44.458 --> 00:27:48.667
Did you get here today?
Yes, we came today.
00:27:48.792 --> 00:27:51.208
We killed about 8 IS people.
00:27:51.333 --> 00:27:56.417
The others took some of the human shields
and withdrew, but we freed these ones.
00:27:56.999 --> 00:28:01.917
No food or drink, we couldn’t sleep
or sit, the water was only from the well.
00:28:02.333 --> 00:28:05.792
We’re from the Farouq area.
We were dying of hunger.
00:28:06.999 --> 00:28:11.375
They treated us terribly,
we underwent all sorts of things.
00:28:23.458 --> 00:28:24.999
Come with us.
00:28:46.625 --> 00:28:49.083
Come with us.
00:28:53.208 --> 00:28:56.750
Quick, watch out for snipers.
00:29:01.708 --> 00:29:03.999
Come to the gate.
00:29:05.625 --> 00:29:07.042
Come on.
00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:17.917
They’re shooting the civilians.
00:29:17.999 --> 00:29:19.875
Tell him to cross over.
00:29:20.333 --> 00:29:21.833
Do they shoot them here?
00:29:28.042 --> 00:29:30.917
Where’s our group?
00:29:30.999 --> 00:29:33.250
You’ll have to
run a little, Granny.
00:29:40.917 --> 00:29:44.833
Run, cross over, hurry!
00:29:45.375 --> 00:29:46.958
Hurry!
00:29:47.833 --> 00:29:49.999
Hurry! Don’t stop in the street!
00:29:54.417 --> 00:29:56.333
Is there anybody there still?
00:29:59.042 --> 00:30:01.792
Just us two from the command.
00:30:04.292 --> 00:30:07.958
Go fast and get ammunition
and supplies, and hurry back.
00:30:08.083 --> 00:30:10.000
Only two people stayed there.
00:30:20.167 --> 00:30:21.750
Where are you from?
00:30:25.999 --> 00:30:29.833
– Why are you crying?
– Leave me alone, please.
00:30:30.958 --> 00:30:34.292
I don’t know where my family is.
00:30:35.625 --> 00:30:37.999
– Where are you from?
– From Zanjili.
00:30:38.458 --> 00:30:41.999
Where did you set out from?
Wow long have you been travelling?
00:30:42.083 --> 00:30:51.167
We left just now, but four IS dogs
came and took my sons and their father.
00:30:54.999 --> 00:30:56.917
Where’s my father?
00:31:44.083 --> 00:31:48.083
Mohammad, what does it mean for you
when you are finished in Mosul?
00:31:48.667 --> 00:31:51.000
It means everything
for everyone for us.
00:31:51.125 --> 00:31:53.958
– Why?
– Because we want to get rest.
00:31:54.333 --> 00:31:55.917
That’s it.
00:32:10.750 --> 00:32:17.000
IS drove them out of their houses
and drove cars of explosives into them.
00:32:17.792 --> 00:32:21.208
They all died,
except for these little girls.
00:32:21.333 --> 00:32:28.750
One’s injured, the other lost a hand.
The poor things are in a very bad way.
00:32:28.875 --> 00:32:32.958
IS went into our house.
00:32:33.125 --> 00:32:38.833
As soon as we went into the street,
they started to shoot at us.
00:32:39.500 --> 00:32:42.375
Me and my seven children.
00:32:42.792 --> 00:32:47.625
I was injured,
so was she and my husband too.
00:32:48.833 --> 00:32:57.250
I was injured, she lost a hand,
and my five sons died. And their father.
00:32:58.917 --> 00:33:00.375
It’s all the fault of IS.
00:33:00.833 --> 00:33:06.500
I call on the Iraqi government to
operate on my hand. I’m a girl.
00:33:06.917 --> 00:33:11.167
My whole family has died, my father too.
00:33:11.875 --> 00:33:16.917
My brothers died, and only my mother
and I are left. We have no one.
00:33:19.375 --> 00:33:22.833
My hand is gone because of IS.
00:33:47.083 --> 00:33:50.875
A moment ago one jumped out
and ran into this house.
00:33:50.999 --> 00:33:53.833
Into this house?
Just as we were coming.
00:33:54.042 --> 00:33:57.958
Come out! Who’s inside?
00:34:02.250 --> 00:34:03.833
Come out!
00:34:05.292 --> 00:34:07.500
Stay in your place.
00:34:09.833 --> 00:34:11.250
Who’s inside?
00:34:11.375 --> 00:34:15.417
– There are only women in there.
– What?
00:34:15.750 --> 00:34:19.792
Where are the guys
who were running around?
00:34:19.875 --> 00:34:21.292
– Who?
– The Islamists.
00:34:21.417 --> 00:34:26.833
– I don’t know, I swear!
– What’s that hole behind the door?
00:34:26.999 --> 00:34:28.500
I don’t know, I swear.
00:34:29.083 --> 00:34:30.958
Come out, quickly.
00:34:33.375 --> 00:34:34.958
Don’t be afraid.
00:34:34.999 --> 00:34:36.958
We’re just doing a search.
00:34:37.417 --> 00:34:38.999
Children, come to me.
00:34:42.792 --> 00:34:44.208
Don’t be afraid.
00:34:55.708 --> 00:35:02.208
There’s nothing to fear.
Come to me. Don’t be afraid.
00:35:11.208 --> 00:35:15.167
– Where have you got the weapons?
– I don’t have any, I swear.
00:35:15.292 --> 00:35:19.708
– You’ve no weapons in this house?
– We’ve nothing here but a knife.
00:35:19.833 --> 00:35:22.750
And the IS people
who were at the neighbours?
00:35:22.875 --> 00:35:26.625
– No, those are normal families.
– Are these your children?
00:35:26.750 --> 00:35:28.792
– Yes.
– Give me their ID cards.
00:35:28.917 --> 00:35:31.917
This one doesn’t have any.
Only Maryam has one.
00:35:31.999 --> 00:35:35.125
Bring your ID, fast.
00:35:35.458 --> 00:35:37.667
What house were you talking about?
00:35:41.708 --> 00:35:45.375
– They have nothing to do with it.
– What’s your name?
00:35:45.875 --> 00:35:47.292
Mohammad Saeed Khalil.
00:37:10.958 --> 00:37:12.917
Come here, come, come, come.
00:37:14.292 --> 00:37:18.667
I don’t know why they’re running.
But we must… They’re running.
00:37:27.999 --> 00:37:29.999
What happened in there?
00:37:31.833 --> 00:37:33.250
What?
00:37:36.292 --> 00:37:37.875
What happened over there?
00:37:39.999 --> 00:37:43.917
A car bomb went off there,
there’ll probably be others.
00:37:43.999 --> 00:37:46.458
Our men have it under control.
00:37:46.667 --> 00:37:48.999
There might be another car bomb.
00:37:49.042 --> 00:37:53.167
If we find it, the Zi-Qar
anti-terrorist unit will deal with it.
00:37:54.875 --> 00:37:57.083
Watch out, they’ve got snipers!
00:37:57.250 --> 00:38:01.083
Barricade it and have a launcher
and other things to hand.
00:38:01.208 --> 00:38:03.708
The enemy is behind us and has snipers.
00:38:07.292 --> 00:38:10.250
Block the path.
00:41:44.958 --> 00:41:47.958
– One after another.
– Where did you find them?
00:41:48.000 --> 00:41:52.375
– One of them brought us to them.
– Really? – They killed his son.
00:41:54.667 --> 00:41:56.083
Don’t beat them.
00:41:57.208 --> 00:41:59.083
One after another.
00:42:06.750 --> 00:42:08.750
Come here, sit down on the ground.
00:42:36.958 --> 00:42:39.458
– Are there seven of them?
– Yes, seven.
00:42:40.417 --> 00:42:42.292
We have a whole group.
00:42:43.333 --> 00:42:47.625
– Where did you serve? – In Mosul.
– Where in Mosul? – In Rifai.
00:42:47.750 --> 00:42:50.042
– And you?
– In Rifai too.
00:42:51.333 --> 00:42:52.917
Me too.
00:42:54.292 --> 00:42:57.833
You’re crying? How original!
00:42:58.167 --> 00:43:01.500
Eat shit or I’ll kill you,
you’re a real case.
00:43:01.999 --> 00:43:04.167
He’s the first.
00:43:04.292 --> 00:43:05.875
The one behind him.
00:43:05.999 --> 00:43:09.250
– The one in yellow?
– The one in the striped shirt.
00:43:09.333 --> 00:43:12.500
– Sir, it’s a forgery.
– Yes, that’s clear.
00:43:12.917 --> 00:43:17.999
Where did they make the ID for you?
Was it they who gave it to you?
00:43:18.042 --> 00:43:20.625
Look at his ID card, sir.
00:43:21.458 --> 00:43:24.125
It’s completely transparent.
00:43:25.042 --> 00:43:27.333
Who does work like that for you?
00:43:27.458 --> 00:43:29.333
It’s completely transparent.
00:43:55.083 --> 00:43:56.667
Treat her.
00:44:01.042 --> 00:44:03.375
Pour water on her face!
00:44:05.999 --> 00:44:08.125
Is there any water here?
00:44:08.250 --> 00:44:11.458
– You must have some water?
– I don‘t.
00:44:16.292 --> 00:44:17.875
Bring it, quickly!
00:44:26.458 --> 00:44:29.125
Where’s the water?
Rinse her face with it!
00:44:29.250 --> 00:44:33.375
Where’s the water, where’s the bottle?
Don’t pour it on her hand!
00:44:37.750 --> 00:44:39.375
Come on, what’s the matter?
00:44:40.083 --> 00:44:43.000
– Treat her!
– How am I supposed to treat her?
00:44:58.375 --> 00:44:59.958
Get up and walk.
00:45:01.750 --> 00:45:03.750
Bandage it.
00:45:07.708 --> 00:45:09.125
Hurry up.
00:45:09.833 --> 00:45:11.250
Get up, please.
00:45:11.958 --> 00:45:14.958
Help me in some way, please!
00:45:18.833 --> 00:45:22.250
Put her in a Humvee,
so they can take her away fast!
00:45:24.875 --> 00:45:26.958
Come on, Hossein, put her inside.
00:45:28.000 --> 00:45:31.417
Where am I supposed to take her?
00:45:31.833 --> 00:45:33.708
For God’s sake, take her away.
00:45:56.500 --> 00:45:58.000
Put her on the bonnet.
00:46:04.000 --> 00:46:08.167
Take her to the first aid station!
00:46:08.999 --> 00:46:13.999
Take her away, come on, Basil,
take her on the car, help them.
00:46:20.250 --> 00:46:21.875
What are you waiting for?
00:46:29.167 --> 00:46:30.750
Hurry up!
00:47:02.667 --> 00:47:06.292
– Have you anyone else there?
– She was hit by a missile.
00:47:12.458 --> 00:47:15.458
– What happened?
– A missile from a mortar.
00:47:38.042 --> 00:47:40.999
Uncover it, so it can be filmed.
00:47:47.208 --> 00:47:50.083
A group of IS members
from various countries.
00:47:50.208 --> 00:47:52.667
We don’t know if most are from Europe.
00:47:52.792 --> 00:47:57.083
There are female suicide bombers there,
one with a baby.
00:48:00.708 --> 00:48:02.208
Come on, come on Jana.
00:48:03.875 --> 00:48:07.500
Here’s another woman, uncover her head.
00:48:09.208 --> 00:48:12.375
Here are the suicide bombers.
00:48:14.125 --> 00:48:18.250
They had explosives belts on them
so they could set themselves off.
00:48:23.333 --> 00:48:25.500
We don’t know where they came from.
00:48:25.708 --> 00:48:29.999
Our sniper got them,
they all fell here.
00:48:30.042 --> 00:48:34.125
There were six of them altogether.
00:48:39.917 --> 00:48:42.042
What will you do when it ends here?
00:48:43.750 --> 00:48:45.375
I’ll try and get married.
00:48:46.792 --> 00:48:51.333
We young ones will want to settle down,
to go back to our homes.
00:48:51.999 --> 00:48:54.999
Everything that’s destroyed here,
will be renewed.
00:48:55.083 --> 00:48:57.999
It’ll be like before.
At least I’d like that.
00:48:58.875 --> 00:49:02.250
Two of them attacked us.
00:49:04.875 --> 00:49:06.750
Here’s some water, little one.
00:51:13.125 --> 00:51:16.250
Oh my God. Oh my God.
00:51:17.125 --> 00:51:18.708
Here behind, look.
00:51:46.042 --> 00:51:49.125
We’ve an injured person here,
God bless you.
00:51:51.708 --> 00:51:53.125
Go to the front.
00:51:53.250 --> 00:51:54.958
My son was hit!
00:51:56.000 --> 00:51:58.833
Please take him fast!
00:52:03.500 --> 00:52:07.333
We’re all right, praise God.
They shot at us.
00:52:07.917 --> 00:52:10.000
There’s heavy shooting there.
00:52:16.167 --> 00:52:19.375
I’m going to throw up. Give me water.
00:52:28.250 --> 00:52:29.833
There, behind me.
00:52:30.458 --> 00:52:31.999
There, behind me.
00:52:32.625 --> 00:52:35.999
– What happened?
– Look there, at the back.
00:53:29.292 --> 00:53:31.958
Come on, the ambulance
is ready, doctor.
00:53:33.042 --> 00:53:36.875
Don’t worry, it’ll be OK.
00:54:07.875 --> 00:54:09.500
Who is going with the baby?
00:54:11.958 --> 00:54:14.875
– There’s a Qatari.
– There is a doctor in there?
00:55:25.958 --> 00:55:28.667
What’s that on your hand, Salwan?
00:55:28.792 --> 00:55:31.083
It’s from the Imam Hossein pilgrimage.
00:55:31.833 --> 00:55:36.333
We wear it on our hands
to protect us from evil.
00:55:36.458 --> 00:55:40.458
In our unit there are Sunnites,
Shiites, Christians, Mandaeans,
00:55:40.625 --> 00:55:42.375
people from all Iraqi groups.
00:55:42.500 --> 00:55:46.500
We’re not divided, so we are
unlike the rest of the Iraqi army.
00:55:54.292 --> 00:55:57.250
We cannot shoot them because
they have civilians with them.
00:55:57.375 --> 00:55:59.958
Because they use
their children and women.
00:56:00.000 --> 00:56:03.750
They are shooting at us.
We’re putting a defence line there.
00:56:03.875 --> 00:56:06.250
To keep the second battalion moving.
00:56:06.750 --> 00:56:08.917
When did Iraqis start to feel unsafe?
00:56:08.999 --> 00:56:13.250
Since the fall of Saddam’s dictatorship
we’ve not felt safe.
00:56:13.375 --> 00:56:16.292
When this ends,
maybe things will finally change.
00:56:28.500 --> 00:56:31.999
They’re a lot. They’re a lot.
00:56:33.999 --> 00:56:35.708
That is their attack.
00:56:51.125 --> 00:56:54.250
There’s a lot of them,
it’s their last refuge.
00:56:57.792 --> 00:57:01.999
They’re trying to advance by means of
suicide bombers and snipers.
00:57:05.500 --> 00:57:07.708
Take him with you.
00:57:09.999 --> 00:57:11.417
He is injured?
00:57:50.042 --> 00:57:53.833
I can see them directly.
They can see us too. I saw them.
00:57:56.125 --> 00:58:00.000
IS members are here close to us,
there are about ten of them.
00:58:00.125 --> 00:58:02.667
And I swear they’re the ones
00:58:05.083 --> 00:58:07.958
who killed colonel Mohammad Jasim.
00:58:07.999 --> 00:58:10.042
His hat flew off his head.
00:59:00.375 --> 00:59:02.875
This morning one IS member surrendered.
00:59:03.000 --> 00:59:04.958
We used him during the attack.
00:59:05.167 --> 00:59:10.292
When we entered the house and there was
an Islamist there, we shot him.
00:59:11.167 --> 00:59:12.958
Go, straight ahead!
00:59:22.958 --> 00:59:26.458
Sir, what should we do with
the ones next to us?
00:59:26.667 --> 00:59:28.083
Leave them alone.
00:59:44.999 --> 00:59:46.458
Keep going straight!
00:59:54.708 --> 00:59:57.250
Salwan, let him bend over.
Take him by the neck.
00:59:57.333 --> 00:59:58.917
Keep going, straight on!
01:00:07.500 --> 01:00:09.000
Come here.
01:00:09.125 --> 01:00:11.292
Get dressed, put these trousers on!
01:00:13.333 --> 01:00:16.750
Leave him alone.
01:00:16.999 --> 01:00:19.833
What’s that, a shirt?
01:00:19.958 --> 01:00:22.833
Put it on!
Are there any trousers there?
01:00:23.208 --> 01:00:25.417
Stand! Put it on!
01:00:35.042 --> 01:00:37.875
– Whose clothes are they?
– An IS member‘s.
01:00:37.999 --> 01:00:39.458
Why should I put them on?
01:00:39.667 --> 01:00:41.167
Hurry up and put them on!
01:00:42.250 --> 01:00:44.833
They’re your things, aren’t they?
01:00:47.458 --> 01:00:50.999
Put it on, you have a
lot of shrapnel scars.
01:00:51.042 --> 01:00:53.625
God knows how many injuries you’ve had.
01:00:53.750 --> 01:00:55.999
How else could you be so beat up?
01:01:02.375 --> 01:01:03.958
Hello?
01:01:05.000 --> 01:01:06.500
Who’s there?
01:01:08.042 --> 01:01:09.625
Yes?
01:01:10.333 --> 01:01:11.917
Hello Safa!
01:01:13.750 --> 01:01:15.167
How are you?
01:01:16.999 --> 01:01:18.417
How are you doing?
01:01:20.625 --> 01:01:26.250
To be honest, I’m in Mosul now, close
to the river, it’s heavy going there.
01:01:27.750 --> 01:01:29.167
Was he hit?
01:01:35.417 --> 01:01:36.999
I’m so sorry.
01:02:02.833 --> 01:02:08.667
Sir, look at the wounds on his back.
He says he was in a car accident.
01:02:09.125 --> 01:02:11.042
Look at the wounds.
01:02:55.167 --> 01:02:56.999
You can’t get through there.
01:03:09.125 --> 01:03:13.958
– Is there any distance left? – How
will he get through? – Come with me.
01:03:14.625 --> 01:03:16.125
He won’t get through yet.
01:04:06.208 --> 01:04:12.500
Mohammad, how do you feel about it
that all world think that Mosul was freed?
01:04:12.708 --> 01:04:14.125
How exciting!
01:04:14.750 --> 01:04:17.999
But you’re here and there
is a big fight going on.
01:04:18.083 --> 01:04:23.999
Yes, we need to finish off
the fighting between us.
01:04:32.999 --> 01:04:37.375
– You saw where it landed.
– Pretty close.
01:04:41.083 --> 01:04:43.667
As I told you, mate.
01:04:48.208 --> 01:04:51.208
There are two units here
and another one there.
01:04:51.333 --> 01:04:54.083
So twelve altogether,
we have extra people.
01:04:54.667 --> 01:04:57.292
Where’s the one that’s surrounded?
01:04:59.125 --> 01:05:00.708
What’s happening?
01:05:03.083 --> 01:05:05.250
Shouldn’t you tell her, sir?
01:05:05.750 --> 01:05:08.667
There’s a group of IS members there.
01:05:08.875 --> 01:05:13.167
They’re close to the firing
positions of the second unit.
01:05:13.292 --> 01:05:15.458
Our guys are trying to surround them
01:05:15.667 --> 01:05:20.042
and to move the line and vehicles
to the river bank, but it’s a bit hard.
01:05:41.875 --> 01:05:43.667
I will write here.
01:06:53.667 --> 01:06:57.833
– Ho do you feel when you write it?
– So good, I am excited.
01:06:58.875 --> 01:07:01.625
So… It’s seven twelve.
01:07:10.333 --> 01:07:12.333
PM. PM or AM?
01:07:23.917 --> 01:07:27.417
Resting place of the heroes
of the Golden Division.
01:07:27.917 --> 01:07:33.208
2017, 10 July, 7:12 PM.
01:07:33.833 --> 01:07:39.125
Mohammad and Salwan.
01:07:53.750 --> 01:07:57.125
So, we’re very near from the river.
