MY SWEET LAND is a coming-of-age story set against a multigenerational war in the post-Soviet Caucasus Mountains. It follows an 11-year-old boy named Vrej, growing up in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) who dreams of becoming a dentist in his picture-postcard village with its roaming ducks and golden bees.
His sweet land, however, is strewn with mines from previous wars, shaping a country that remains unrecognized to the world. Vrejís life takes a sudden turn when war erupts, forcing him to flee with his family. He spends his days in exile impatiently waiting for victory, but reality takes a different turn; Armenians lose the war.
Upon returning to his surviving village, he confronts the devastation, new power dynamics, and education that prepares children for near-future battles. Vrej must learn the rules of war. But can he carry a nationís hopes on his young shoulders? The film is a testament to the people of Artsakh, where hope and trauma had shaped their resilience across generations.

01:04:47.639 --> 01:04:49.840
[Indistinct conversation]
01:04:55.760 --> 01:04:58.039
[Music continues;
TV on]
01:05:08.840 --> 01:05:10.760
[Music fades]
01:05:10.880 --> 01:05:13.519
[Newsreader, on TV]
The incident happened near Martakert.
01:05:13.639 --> 01:05:17.519
A 55-year-old resident
was shot by an Azerbaijani sniper
01:05:17.639 --> 01:05:22.800
while ploughing his field
one kilometre from the Azeri positions.
01:05:22.920 --> 01:05:25.479
Russian peacekeepers were present,
01:05:25.599 --> 01:05:30.999
and furthermore, one peacekeeper
was inside the targeted tractor.
01:05:31.119 --> 01:05:33.639
[Man] "Do you want me to sit
inside the tractor?" he asked.
01:05:33.760 --> 01:05:35.559
I said, "Yes, it's better.
01:05:35.679 --> 01:05:39.800
"They see you in the tractor,
there won't be problems."
01:05:39.920 --> 01:05:43.880
He sat inside, then the tractor
turned two to three times...
01:05:47.999 --> 01:05:51.159
[Mother] As if there is
a peaceful ceasefire... As if...
01:05:53.119 --> 01:05:57.280
We are scared.
What can I say?
01:05:57.400 --> 01:05:59.479
[Teacher] It punctured his heart.
He died immediately.
01:05:59.599 --> 01:06:03.479
[Teacher 2] There should be no shootings
from either side.
01:06:03.599 --> 01:06:07.599
They knew of the shooting.
01:06:07.720 --> 01:06:11.400
The Russian asked our side
why they didn't shoot back.
01:06:11.519 --> 01:06:13.760
Our soldiers said
they were not ordered to shoot back.
01:06:13.880 --> 01:06:17.079
[Voices overlap]
01:06:17.199 --> 01:06:18.920
[Teacher 3] How stupid of them.
01:06:19.039 --> 01:06:20.880
Was their sniper commanded to shoot?
01:06:20.999 --> 01:06:24.960
If ours shot back,
he would have been arrested.
01:06:25.079 --> 01:06:29.920
Why didn't the Russians fire back?
They should have shot back.
01:06:30.039 --> 01:06:33.039
We could've fired a couple of mortars
towards their trenches...
01:06:33.159 --> 01:06:35.720
That's not a solution.
01:06:35.840 --> 01:06:37.760
[Teacher 4] Everyone has their own agenda.
01:06:40.039 --> 01:06:42.039
[School bell rings]
01:06:47.400 --> 01:06:49.400
[Military Preparation Teacher]
By living here,
01:06:49.559 --> 01:06:52.199
we are all considered soldiers,
just without uniforms...
01:06:52.320 --> 01:06:55.360
because the situation demands it.
01:06:55.479 --> 01:07:01.639
We teach every minor detail
about the army.
01:07:01.760 --> 01:07:04.479
It's like a kindergarten for the army.
01:07:08.320 --> 01:07:11.440
We will teach you to stay safe,
01:07:11.559 --> 01:07:14.599
to continue the work of our ancestors,
01:07:14.720 --> 01:07:19.519
and to strengthen this little homeland.
01:07:20.840 --> 01:07:24.559
This is what we have.
There is no alternative.
01:07:28.920 --> 01:07:30.440
Button it.
01:07:30.559 --> 01:07:33.999
Let's give it a try. Masks on.
01:07:37.880 --> 01:07:40.079
Quickly!
01:07:44.999 --> 01:07:48.320
That should take five seconds!
01:07:48.440 --> 01:07:50.159
Take them off.
01:07:53.199 --> 01:07:55.840
When shooting from the spot...
01:07:58.079 --> 01:08:00.159
..the rifleman...
01:08:01.360 --> 01:08:03.159
..takes...
01:08:04.360 --> 01:08:09.400
..the most comfortable position
for shooting.
01:08:09.519 --> 01:08:12.519
What is it?
01:08:12.639 --> 01:08:14.999
The most comfortable
is to lie down while shooting.
01:08:15.119 --> 01:08:16.720
Why?
01:08:16.840 --> 01:08:19.039
[Pupil] Because you don't move.
01:08:19.159 --> 01:08:24.119
[Military Preparation Teacher]
Your body is fixed on the ground.
01:08:24.239 --> 01:08:28.999
Therefore, accuracy is assured.
01:08:29.119 --> 01:08:32.159
IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO?
01:08:35.560 --> 01:08:37.560
[Shaver buzzes]
01:08:50.560 --> 01:08:53.359
[Barber]
We'll buzz the rest at level three.
01:08:55.960 --> 01:08:58.439
Like a true man's haircut.
01:08:59.800 --> 01:09:02.039
[Barber] Hold your head straight, Vrej.
01:09:10.760 --> 01:09:13.840
[Vrej] The zig-zag scissor is bad.
It's hurting me.
01:09:15.520 --> 01:09:18.720
[Barber] No, you feel pain
when I lift your hair with a comb.
01:09:18.840 --> 01:09:21.239
I didn't pull, though, right?
01:09:21.359 --> 01:09:23.760
You just pulled it now.
01:09:26.640 --> 01:09:29.600
[Father] You're lying.
01:09:29.720 --> 01:09:31.760
No, I'm not lying.
01:09:33.199 --> 01:09:36.640
[Father] Keep your head straight.
Don't speak.
01:09:36.760 --> 01:09:39.319
Listen to orders.
Do what they say.
01:09:42.960 --> 01:09:44.680
[Barber] Keep your head up.
01:10:25.199 --> 01:10:27.480
[Engine rumbles;
Indistinct chatter]
01:10:30.760 --> 01:10:32.680
[Car horn]
01:10:32.800 --> 01:10:34.800
[Bustling chatter]
01:10:40.600 --> 01:10:43.039
[Trumpet plays]
01:11:04.439 --> 01:11:06.319
[Camp Leader] Silence in the lines!
01:11:12.319 --> 01:11:14.800
Listen to me carefully.
01:11:14.920 --> 01:11:18.159
All of you must respect each other.
01:11:18.279 --> 01:11:20.279
Most importantly, boys respect the girls.
01:11:21.960 --> 01:11:25.319
The elders respect the young,
the young respect the elders.
01:11:25.439 --> 01:11:27.760
All these rules are important.
01:11:29.359 --> 01:11:31.079
We will have military classes,
01:11:31.199 --> 01:11:33.439
introduction to guns,
01:11:33.560 --> 01:11:35.359
military education.
01:11:35.480 --> 01:11:41.119
There will be time to play, dance
and have campfires at night.
01:11:41.239 --> 01:11:42.640
Understood?
01:11:51.039 --> 01:11:55.199
- I don't have internet.
- You won't need internet.
01:11:55.319 --> 01:11:57.920
The internet should be off.
01:11:59.359 --> 01:12:02.239
Mkho. Hey, Mkho!
01:12:02.359 --> 01:12:04.560
Will they let me in with my sandals?
01:12:06.640 --> 01:12:08.159
[Mkho] Don't you have shoes?
01:12:08.279 --> 01:12:11.159
They are dirty.
I need to wash them.
01:12:13.600 --> 01:12:15.319
It's so hot.
01:12:25.199 --> 01:12:26.800
[Lively chatter]
01:12:26.920 --> 01:12:28.600
[Man] Walk in a line.
01:12:35.239 --> 01:12:36.920
[Woman] Attention.
01:12:38.039 --> 01:12:41.079
Dear campers...
01:12:41.199 --> 01:12:43.399
respected jury...
01:12:43.520 --> 01:12:47.480
today, we have
an intellectual competition.
01:12:49.560 --> 01:12:51.999
Attention.
01:12:53.999 --> 01:12:55.960
What is a "homeland?"
01:12:56.079 --> 01:12:59.439
Who can describe what a "homeland" means?
01:12:59.560 --> 01:13:03.079
A homeland is a sacred land
inherited by our fathers.
01:13:03.199 --> 01:13:07.800
A homeland is a land
that we need to fight for by all means,
01:13:07.920 --> 01:13:11.720
for which a lot of people
have sacrificed their lives.
01:13:11.840 --> 01:13:13.199
A homeland is sacred.
01:13:13.319 --> 01:13:17.520
People are ready
to shed their blood to protect it.
01:13:17.640 --> 01:13:21.399
A homeland is our sacred sanctuary,
where we live.
01:13:21.520 --> 01:13:24.319
It's the native land,
a heritage from our ancestors.
01:13:24.439 --> 01:13:26.960
- [Camp Leader 2] Good, next.
- [Woman] Martakert?
01:13:27.079 --> 01:13:29.520
[Camp Leader 2] You don't have an answer?
01:13:29.640 --> 01:13:32.119
- [Girl] We do have an answer.
- [Camp Leader 2] Then say it.
01:13:32.239 --> 01:13:35.319
A homeland
is the land our fathers lived in.
01:13:35.439 --> 01:13:38.199
If we lose it,
then we will have nothing left.
01:13:38.319 --> 01:13:39.800
[Woman] Well done.
01:13:40.880 --> 01:13:43.680
So, all units get eight points.
01:13:48.760 --> 01:13:51.119
Now, off to the lake!
01:13:51.239 --> 01:13:53.239
[Laughter]
01:13:55.239 --> 01:13:57.239
[Lively chatter]
01:14:07.079 --> 01:14:09.079
[Gentle music]
01:14:23.960 --> 01:14:26.720
[Camp Leader] Out!
01:14:26.840 --> 01:14:29.159
Get out!
01:14:29.279 --> 01:14:31.720
All of you, get out.
01:14:34.159 --> 01:14:36.159
Enough.
01:14:36.279 --> 01:14:38.279
[Music continues]
01:14:43.119 --> 01:14:46.840
Enough, brother, enough.
01:14:56.319 --> 01:14:58.319
[Music continues]
01:15:06.520 --> 01:15:08.439
[Music fades]
01:15:08.560 --> 01:15:10.560
[Scraping]
01:15:27.680 --> 01:15:30.960
[Camp Leader] The softness of the soil
warns me that something is wrong here.
01:15:33.199 --> 01:15:35.480
Very carefully...
01:15:35.600 --> 01:15:39.520
If there are people following me,
I warn them about the mine.
01:15:39.640 --> 01:15:42.239
They should stay still.
01:15:42.359 --> 01:15:44.520
Very carefully, I reveal it.
01:15:49.640 --> 01:15:51.760
[Camp Leader barks orders]
01:15:51.880 --> 01:15:54.119
[Ruminative music]
01:15:54.239 --> 01:15:56.319
[Woman] Attention.
01:15:58.239 --> 01:16:00.119
Eyes front!
01:16:00.239 --> 01:16:01.319
[Camp Leader] March.
01:16:01.439 --> 01:16:05.199
Left, left, left, right, left.
01:16:05.319 --> 01:16:08.840
Left, left, left, right, left.
01:16:08.960 --> 01:16:10.680
Good job.
01:16:10.800 --> 01:16:12.399
Don't rush.
01:16:12.520 --> 01:16:14.800
Lock it now.
01:16:17.680 --> 01:16:19.560
[Camp Leader] Gather the guns, Martakert!
01:16:19.680 --> 01:16:21.800
[Music continues;
Indistinct chatter]
01:16:32.560 --> 01:16:34.560
[Music fades]
01:16:35.840 --> 01:16:37.960
It's not coming out.
01:16:38.999 --> 01:16:40.319
It's stuck.
01:16:41.840 --> 01:16:43.840
This one is broken.
01:16:43.960 --> 01:16:46.199
This one is broken.
01:16:53.680 --> 01:16:55.279
It is broken.
01:17:02.880 --> 01:17:04.960
I just can't do it fast enough.
01:17:05.079 --> 01:17:07.800
[Man] Don't worry, you'll learn.
01:17:07.920 --> 01:17:10.800
You'll get used to it.
01:17:32.359 --> 01:17:35.399
[Father, on phone] Did they tell you
when you're leaving tomorrow?
01:17:35.520 --> 01:17:37.999
In the morning, after breakfast.
01:17:38.119 --> 01:17:41.800
[Mother] Where are you lying?
01:17:41.920 --> 01:17:43.159
In our room.
01:17:43.279 --> 01:17:44.999
[Grandma] Vrej, is that a house?
01:17:45.119 --> 01:17:47.039
No, it's the barracks.
01:17:47.159 --> 01:17:49.199
Hi, Grandma.
01:17:51.359 --> 01:17:55.079
- [Grandma] Are you coming back tomorrow?
- Yes.
01:17:55.199 --> 01:17:57.999
[Grandma] Are you happy or sad to return?
01:17:58.119 --> 01:17:59.720
Happy.
01:17:59.840 --> 01:18:02.560
I don't like this.
01:18:02.680 --> 01:18:04.600
[Lively chatter]
01:18:04.720 --> 01:18:06.720
[Ruminative music]
01:18:17.720 --> 01:18:19.720
[Music continues]
01:18:43.159 --> 01:18:45.159
[Music continues;
Indistinct chatter]
01:19:00.520 --> 01:19:03.520
Arman, go next to your brother
for the photo.
01:19:04.760 --> 01:19:06.760
[Music fades]
01:19:28.720 --> 01:19:30.720
[Insects chirr]
01:20:07.960 --> 01:20:12.920
[Vrej] The homeland is the most important
place where I want to live this life.
01:20:15.560 --> 01:20:18.439
Maybe by the time I grow up,
the lost lands will be ours again.
01:20:23.720 --> 01:20:25.960
If there is the need, I will fight, too.
01:20:31.119 --> 01:20:32.920
What else would I do?
01:20:37.520 --> 01:20:40.520
I'm not crazy about fighting...
01:20:40.640 --> 01:20:42.640
but if I have to, I'll fight.
01:20:50.960 --> 01:20:53.039
Can I ask you a question?
01:20:54.199 --> 01:20:56.520
What's going to happen
to the hero of the film at the end?
01:20:59.560 --> 01:21:00.760
Huh?
01:21:03.279 --> 01:21:04.480
Huh?
01:21:06.039 --> 01:21:08.399
Am I going to die?
01:21:08.520 --> 01:21:10.720
The Azeris will shoot me
from across these mountains.
01:21:12.439 --> 01:21:14.359
The final episode.
01:21:15.439 --> 01:21:17.399
On the day of my birthday.
01:21:22.359 --> 01:21:24.680
What's going to happen to me?
01:21:25.720 --> 01:21:27.560
Am I going to live?
01:21:29.119 --> 01:21:31.680
That's what happens in films,
01:21:31.800 --> 01:21:34.279
- the main hero dies at the end.
- [He chuckles]
01:21:43.520 --> 01:21:45.520
[Stirring music]
01:21:59.119 --> 01:22:01.119
[Music continues]
