A locked door inside a Belgrade home has kept one family separated from their past for generations. An intimate conversation between the director and her mother, the dynamic activist and scholar Srbijanka Turajlić, reveals a house and a country haunted by history. What begins as the chronicle of a childhood home grows into an elegant portrait of a charismatic and brilliant woman in times of great political turmoil.
"Mila Turajlić has made an historic step for Serbian cinema with 'The Other Side of Everything'. Though young, she is a force. Everything about the movie is personal; Powerful and honest." —Sara Radojković, Vice Magazine
"Director Mila Turajlić examines Serbia's political history through the eyes of her activist mother in this engrossing doc. ['The Other Side of Everything'] honors Srbijanka’s legacy of activism and brings her spirit of honor and responsibility to a new generation and a wider audience." —Alissa Simon, Variety
"Fiery protagonist Srbijanka Turajlić raises the temperature; flinty, questioning, confrontational, unapologetic, [hers is] a voice from yesterday which inspiringly refuses to be silenced. Accessible, informative and wryly humorous, the film uses Srbijanka's tastefully decorated residence as a prism through which to view the woman, her turbulent times and the complicated history of the former Yugoslavia. The personal and political interweave to quietly rewarding effect." —Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
"Fascinating; a standout. Mines the depths of family history to offer an untold story of Yugoslavia’s past. Captures Srbijanka’s profoundly powerful presence, presenting a stirring portrait of one of the most galvanizing voices for political action in contemporary documentary cinema." —Courtney Sheehan, The Independent
