Several years ago, after taking part in the mass uprisings against Bashar al-Assad, Adnan al-Mhamied had to flee Syria with his wife, Basmah, and their four children. Now settled in Montreal, they’ve adjusted to life in a peaceful city, but Adnan and Basmah still fear for loved ones back in Syria whose status and whereabouts remain unknown. The war that’s thousands of kilometres away continues to haunt them, surging suddenly to the fore in a conversation, Skype call or Facebook feed. FAR FROM BASHAR chronicles an endearing family as they go about their lives, tormented by a distant and seemingly interminable conflict.

00:27:54.083 --> 00:27:55.375
- Yes, sure.
00:27:55.375 --> 00:27:58.125
So, she speaks French,
I speak English.
00:27:58.125 --> 00:28:00.625
We need someone to translate.
00:28:00.625 --> 00:28:02.250
(laughing)
00:28:08.959 --> 00:28:11.375
(typing)
00:29:21.125 --> 00:29:23.709
(indistinct chattering)
00:29:23.709 --> 00:29:26.917
(soft instrumental music)
00:29:35.875 --> 00:29:38.125
- Which kind of information
you want?
00:29:38.125 --> 00:29:40.417
I can provide it to you.
00:29:41.041 --> 00:29:42.709
Mm-hmm.
00:29:42.709 --> 00:29:46.000
(indistinct voice over phone)
00:30:32.750 --> 00:30:35.709
(cars passing)
00:30:37.375 --> 00:30:40.417
(children shouting)
00:30:42.750 --> 00:30:45.542
(indistinct conversation)
00:30:47.083 --> 00:30:50.041
(Adnan): Did you have fun today?
00:30:53.166 --> 00:30:56.041
I love you, I love you.
00:31:06.709 --> 00:31:09.542
(dishes clattering)
00:33:28.041 --> 00:33:30.583
(sniffling)
00:33:33.208 --> 00:33:36.458
(soft music)
00:33:41.458 --> 00:33:44.250
(cackling)
00:33:56.834 --> 00:33:59.750
(truck passing)
00:34:05.750 --> 00:34:08.583
(soft music)
00:34:08.583 --> 00:34:11.792
(background chattering)
00:34:36.083 --> 00:34:39.083
(snow blower)
00:34:56.208 --> 00:34:59.542
(reporter): Civilians have paid
a brutal price
00:34:59.542 --> 00:35:00.375
during this conflict,
00:35:00.375 --> 00:35:02.125
and were filled
with the deepest foreboding
00:35:02.125 --> 00:35:05.500
for those who remain
in this lost hellish corner
00:35:05.500 --> 00:35:09.208
of opposition
held east of Aleppo.
00:35:09.208 --> 00:35:11.500
While some reportedly
managed to flee yesterday,
00:35:11.500 --> 00:35:15.333
some were reportedly caught
and killed on the spot,
00:35:15.333 --> 00:35:18.041
and others were arrested.
00:35:18.750 --> 00:35:19.834
There are believed
to still be
00:35:19.834 --> 00:35:21.208
thousands of civilians
in the neighbourhood,
00:35:21.208 --> 00:35:23.667
which until recently were
under opposition control,
00:35:23.667 --> 00:35:27.250
including activists
and several defence members,
00:35:27.250 --> 00:35:29.125
who are at risk
of great violations,
00:35:29.125 --> 00:35:33.291
including detention,
torture and killing.
00:35:33.583 --> 00:35:35.834
We\'ve been receiving reports
that many civilians
00:35:35.834 --> 00:35:37.917
have been detained
by pro-government forces.
00:35:37.917 --> 00:35:41.208
We also have been informed
that pro-government forces
00:35:41.208 --> 00:35:43.250
have been entering
civilian homes,
00:35:43.250 --> 00:35:45.959
and killing those individuals
found inside,
00:35:45.959 --> 00:35:47.417
including women and children.
00:35:47.417 --> 00:35:49.333
In terms of actually
being shot,
00:35:49.333 --> 00:35:53.000
the reports we\'ve had of both
being shot in the street
00:35:53.000 --> 00:35:55.166
while trying to flee,
00:35:55.166 --> 00:35:58.583
and shot in their homes.
00:35:59.125 --> 00:36:00.834
Obviously, people
are being killed
00:36:00.834 --> 00:36:06.333
by the incredibly intense
bombardments as well.
00:36:06.959 --> 00:36:10.875
So, we\'ve also has reports,
of, you know,
00:36:10.875 --> 00:36:12.583
bodies lying in the streets,
00:36:12.583 --> 00:36:16.750
and people unable
to pick up those bodies,
00:36:16.750 --> 00:36:18.083
retrieve them,
00:36:18.083 --> 00:36:21.208
because of the intensity
of the bombardments,
00:36:21.208 --> 00:36:25.500
and the fear of themselves
being shot.
00:36:28.333 --> 00:36:31.208
(sighs)
00:36:39.834 --> 00:36:41.458
- Well...
00:36:41.458 --> 00:36:44.417
Whatever the news are,
00:36:44.417 --> 00:36:48.041
since we can\'t do anything,
00:36:48.041 --> 00:36:50.458
it\'s the same.
00:36:56.625 --> 00:36:59.542
It\'s hard to imagine that...
00:36:59.542 --> 00:37:02.375
What\'s going on.
00:37:03.709 --> 00:37:06.500
But I\'m not surprised.
00:37:09.917 --> 00:37:13.583
The silence since 2011,
right now,
00:37:13.583 --> 00:37:17.959
and nothing happened,
no real actions,
00:37:17.959 --> 00:37:20.208
so, it\'s...
00:37:20.208 --> 00:37:22.667
It\'s the normal thing...
00:37:22.667 --> 00:37:25.542
should be happening.
00:37:25.542 --> 00:37:28.041
So, no surprise.
00:37:28.041 --> 00:37:29.542
But...
00:37:29.542 --> 00:37:33.291
It\'s the concern about
the people.
00:37:34.041 --> 00:37:38.625
I lived in Aleppo
for five years.
00:37:38.625 --> 00:37:41.041
I know Aleppo, I know...
00:37:41.041 --> 00:37:46.834
some neighbourhoods
which still sieged,
00:37:47.333 --> 00:37:48.667
... destroyed.
00:37:48.667 --> 00:37:51.917
I lived in Sukkari,
I lived in...
00:37:51.917 --> 00:37:54.917
So it\'s kind of,
I know the city,
00:37:54.917 --> 00:37:58.709
I know the people,
I know the neighbourhoods.
00:37:58.709 --> 00:38:03.959
I saw the pictures
yesterday, and...
00:38:17.041 --> 00:38:19.875
Even people asking about...
00:38:19.875 --> 00:38:24.750
the historical city, and they
forget about the people.
00:38:24.750 --> 00:38:26.291
So...
00:38:26.291 --> 00:38:29.625
I can\'t understand how come...
00:38:30.417 --> 00:38:33.709
people care about...
00:38:34.667 --> 00:38:38.709
buildings, and historical
places,
00:38:38.709 --> 00:38:43.583
and don\'t care about
human beings.
00:39:20.291 --> 00:39:23.959
(aircraft passing overhead)
00:41:12.709 --> 00:41:15.291
- You can ask her, like:
00:41:45.041 --> 00:41:47.000
(laughter)
00:41:55.291 --> 00:41:59.083
- Red leather, yellow leather.
(laughter)
00:41:59.083 --> 00:42:00.625
Okay.
00:42:00.625 --> 00:42:03.458
- Let\'s go.
00:42:40.291 --> 00:42:41.917
(laughter)
00:43:18.750 --> 00:43:20.917
(laughter)
00:43:26.458 --> 00:43:28.458
- I\'m so excited.
- Me too.
00:43:28.458 --> 00:43:30.000
Everyone is going
to see us.
00:43:30.000 --> 00:43:32.375
Imagine, just, like
coming on stage like.
00:43:32.375 --> 00:43:36.041
And then you see everyone,
they\'re looking at you, like...
00:43:36.041 --> 00:43:40.667
- It\'s awkward when, like...
They do like that!
00:43:40.667 --> 00:43:42.625
You\'re like...
00:43:43.208 --> 00:43:46.083
Stop. Stop.
00:43:46.083 --> 00:43:48.583
- It\'s not awkward,
it\'s just acting.
00:43:48.583 --> 00:43:52.625
- But... You have to be
professional.
00:43:52.625 --> 00:43:53.041
- Yeah.
00:43:53.041 --> 00:43:55.667
- Okay, just do like that,
and then...
00:43:55.667 --> 00:43:58.458
- And then he turns around.
- Like...
00:43:58.458 --> 00:44:00.834
- Like... I\'m like:
\"What are you doing?\"
00:44:00.834 --> 00:44:05.333
- No, like, it\'s good,
because you go like this...
00:44:05.333 --> 00:44:05.834
Like...
00:44:05.834 --> 00:44:10.709
- No, just do like that.
Just grab me, and just like...
00:44:17.041 --> 00:44:19.625
Yeah.
00:44:19.917 --> 00:44:24.125
I\'m so excited.
- I want gym classes.
00:47:30.083 --> 00:47:32.792
(Raniah): Stop! You\'re so...!
00:48:30.917 --> 00:48:34.458
(soft music)
00:50:49.959 --> 00:50:54.458
- That looks like a girl,
this one. Looks like a girl.
00:50:54.458 --> 00:50:56.000
(distant applause)
- I love them all.
00:50:56.000 --> 00:50:57.834
(Adnan): To leave Syria,
it was very hard,
00:50:57.834 --> 00:51:04.125
especially for someone like me
who lived all my life in Syria.
00:51:04.333 --> 00:51:05.417
I remembered one day,
00:51:05.417 --> 00:51:09.041
I was discussing
with my colleague, Tahany,
00:51:09.041 --> 00:51:12.959
and she told me,
and this is for the Syrian,
00:51:12.959 --> 00:51:15.834
this part is for the Syria...
00:51:15.834 --> 00:51:19.750
She told me: \"Remember that you
are working for the people,
00:51:19.750 --> 00:51:25.417
and remember how much
it will affect people\'s lives.
00:51:25.417 --> 00:51:30.667
Then, you will forget how much
you are suffering.\"
00:51:30.667 --> 00:51:35.250
I work here with the Syrian
refugees who recently arrived.
00:51:35.250 --> 00:51:38.083
I witnessed how much
00:51:38.083 --> 00:51:42.458
they are looking for peace.
00:51:42.458 --> 00:51:47.333
When you ask any Syrian
who arrived to Montreal,
00:51:48.417 --> 00:51:50.250
he or she will say:
00:51:50.250 --> 00:51:52.542
\"I\'m here for my children.
00:51:52.542 --> 00:51:57.750
I\'m here for a better future
for myself and for my children.\"
00:51:57.750 --> 00:52:02.542
Today, it\'s a great opportunity
to sit here
00:52:02.542 --> 00:52:04.083
to talk about peace
00:52:04.083 --> 00:52:07.834
and to remember the people
inside Syria.
00:52:07.834 --> 00:52:10.583
People who don\'t have anything
to eat,
00:52:10.583 --> 00:52:14.750
sometimes three days,
they don\'t have anything.
00:52:14.959 --> 00:52:17.583
Thank you very much,
thank you all.
00:52:17.583 --> 00:52:19.208
I can thank you, Jim,
00:52:19.208 --> 00:52:23.667
who did the difference
in my life. Thank you, Amal.
00:52:23.667 --> 00:52:26.458
Thank you.
(applause)
00:52:27.291 --> 00:52:30.375
(upbeat Middle Eastern music)
00:53:04.291 --> 00:53:07.750
(music continues)
00:53:38.375 --> 00:53:41.375
(Ali): Put it down!
00:53:41.583 --> 00:53:44.875
Whoo! That\'s a heavy one!
00:53:44.875 --> 00:53:47.709
(Basmah): Hello?
00:53:49.291 --> 00:53:51.542
Hello?
00:54:55.166 --> 00:54:58.208
(phone beeping)
00:55:17.250 --> 00:55:19.750
(sighs)
00:55:20.583 --> 00:55:24.125
(phone beeping)
00:55:28.875 --> 00:55:31.667
(phone ringing)
00:55:33.291 --> 00:55:36.625
Hello? Hello?
00:55:41.041 --> 00:55:42.875
Hello?
00:57:02.458 --> 00:57:04.375
(laughing)
00:58:29.250 --> 00:58:31.166
(laughing)
01:00:18.458 --> 01:00:21.375
(soft music)
01:01:17.917 --> 01:01:22.333
(Adnan): It\'s my niece post
to my brother.
01:01:24.166 --> 01:01:27.417
She tried to...
01:01:28.166 --> 01:01:31.792
To write something
for her father...
01:01:32.375 --> 01:01:36.125
who disappeared since...
01:01:37.792 --> 01:01:41.417
July 2012.
01:01:43.208 --> 01:01:45.041
She said:
01:01:45.041 --> 01:01:47.291
\"Three years,
01:01:47.291 --> 01:01:50.750
and I still live with hope.
01:01:51.250 --> 01:01:56.583
I hope that one day, you\'re
going to knock on the door,
01:01:57.417 --> 01:01:59.750
and you\'re going to be back.
01:01:59.750 --> 01:02:02.291
You\'re in my heart.
01:02:02.291 --> 01:02:04.709
You\'re in my eyes.
01:02:05.834 --> 01:02:08.375
You\'re in my...
01:02:08.375 --> 01:02:12.709
... body. You\'re in my life.
01:02:22.083 --> 01:02:24.750
You struggled to make...
01:02:24.750 --> 01:02:28.458
to make us live...
01:02:28.917 --> 01:02:33.041
in happiness, wealthy...
01:02:39.417 --> 01:02:44.291
Thank you, dad. See you.\"
01:02:56.083 --> 01:03:00.208
It\'s very pure when children
write something about...
01:03:00.208 --> 01:03:04.458
their lives, about their dreams,
01:03:04.458 --> 01:03:07.458
about their...
01:03:08.583 --> 01:03:10.542
feelings.
01:03:10.542 --> 01:03:11.917
Especially...
01:03:11.917 --> 01:03:16.125
when they never seen
their fathers
01:03:16.125 --> 01:03:19.834
since, like, three years.
01:03:19.834 --> 01:03:22.375
Now, it\'s almost...
01:03:23.333 --> 01:03:27.750
... four years.
More than four years.
01:03:30.709 --> 01:03:32.250
So, it\'s...
01:03:32.250 --> 01:03:36.750
words which is coming
from the heart...
01:03:37.583 --> 01:03:40.875
of the children...
01:03:42.709 --> 01:03:46.083
Talking about their feelings.
01:03:49.208 --> 01:03:51.834
Because of that,
this war should stop.
01:03:51.834 --> 01:03:54.458
Because of those children.
01:03:56.333 --> 01:03:59.583
They don\'t lie. They don\'t know
how to lie,
01:03:59.583 --> 01:04:04.291
they wrote what they feel,
they wrote what they think.
01:04:14.291 --> 01:04:17.417
(indistinct chattering)
01:04:39.959 --> 01:04:43.166
(vocal exercises)
(all): Ahh!
01:04:45.125 --> 01:04:48.125
(laughter)
Eee!
01:04:49.500 --> 01:04:52.166
Ooh!
01:04:53.250 --> 01:04:56.125
Ouh!
01:04:58.583 --> 01:05:00.875
Woo!
01:05:01.125 --> 01:05:04.417
Blub-blub-blub!
01:05:06.834 --> 01:05:09.875
(indistinct chattering)
01:05:14.166 --> 01:05:17.417
- Adjust this, because
I have a moustache!
01:05:17.417 --> 01:05:18.083
What the hell?
01:05:18.083 --> 01:05:21.959
- You have moisturizer?
- What the fuck?
01:05:22.875 --> 01:05:24.458
- I\'m doing that because
I\'m sweating,
01:05:24.458 --> 01:05:26.917
and I look
like I\'m sweating.
01:05:28.917 --> 01:05:31.750
I need to wash my glasses!
- Maybe later.
01:05:31.750 --> 01:05:35.625
- No, I can\'t see,
it\'s so blurry.
01:05:40.250 --> 01:05:42.166
Just breathe, breathe.
01:05:43.166 --> 01:05:46.625
- We\'re going to do it later?
01:05:47.792 --> 01:05:51.750
- Yes, exactly. Just breathe.
01:06:35.041 --> 01:06:37.417
(crowd shouting)
01:06:49.208 --> 01:06:51.583
(crowd cheering)
01:06:52.500 --> 01:06:53.792
- They all laughed!
- Yeah.
01:06:53.792 --> 01:06:55.583
- They laughed?
- Yeah, they laughed.
01:06:55.583 --> 01:06:58.375
And when Kate was like:
je ne sais pas,
01:06:58.375 --> 01:07:00.208
they were like: \"Oooh!\"
01:07:00.208 --> 01:07:02.542
- When we were sitting there,
she was like:
01:07:02.542 --> 01:07:04.625
\"I\'m going to cry!\" -
01:07:04.625 --> 01:07:07.250
- Oh, it\'s okay!
01:07:07.250 --> 01:07:09.834
(upbeat music playing)
01:07:09.834 --> 01:07:12.208
(crowd cheering)
01:07:17.542 --> 01:07:19.625
(laughter)
01:07:20.333 --> 01:07:23.709
- Again, again, again!
Go, go, go!
01:07:23.709 --> 01:07:25.834
- Do it! Do it!
01:07:25.834 --> 01:07:27.709
(laughing)
01:07:27.709 --> 01:07:30.458
(crowd cheering)
01:07:45.417 --> 01:07:48.250
(soft music)
01:10:17.834 --> 01:10:20.625
(soft music continues)
01:10:49.417 --> 01:10:53.250
