An exploration of the possible relationship between Heloísa, the filmmaker, and her father, an engineer who had his moment of glory during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Projections and maps become the first bridges to connect with the past. However, it is the inescapable present that really strikes Heloísa and Alvaro as they position themselves on opposite sides of the troubling political situation of Brazil.

00:01:51.069 --> 00:01:54.865
Ten years ago, a friend of my father
gave me a present.
00:01:55.157 --> 00:01:58.911
A collection of rolls of super-8
with pictures of Sete Quedas,
00:01:59.703 --> 00:02:03.415
a string of waterfalls
on the Brazil/Paraguay border.
00:02:05.459 --> 00:02:08.462
On the twentieth
of October 1978,
00:02:08.670 --> 00:02:11.590
at the height of the civil-military
dictatorship in Brazil,
00:02:11.757 --> 00:02:16.303
58 tons of dynamite
blasted the Paraná River,
00:02:16.470 --> 00:02:19.223
changing its course forever.
00:02:20.766 --> 00:02:24.645
As the water level rose,
Sete Quedas disappeared,
00:02:24.895 --> 00:02:29.066
flooded to make way for
the world’s largest hydroelectric power plant,
00:02:30.067 --> 00:02:31.652
Itaipu.
00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:15.445
BUILDING BRIDGES
00:04:48.121 --> 00:04:50.999
Sete Quedas is still
down there.
00:04:59.758 --> 00:05:02.553
In Guarani,
an indigenous language,
00:05:02.761 --> 00:05:05.315
ITAIPU breaks down into "itá", stone,
"y", water, and "pu", roar.
00:05:22.281 --> 00:05:24.324
Watching those rolls of Super-8
00:05:24.533 --> 00:05:28.912
revealed to me images from my childhood
and of all that had since been lost
00:05:29.121 --> 00:05:31.915
to me, to my family
and to my country.
00:05:52.060 --> 00:05:56.273
The drowning of Sete Quedas
and my submerged memories,
00:05:56.481 --> 00:05:58.525
made me go looking
for my father,
00:05:58.734 --> 00:06:03.030
an engineer who was not involved in
building Itaipu, but could have been.
00:06:10.412 --> 00:06:12.372
So dad, the idea is
00:06:12.581 --> 00:06:15.209
to have the projection with pauses
to talk about it.
00:06:15.417 --> 00:06:19.296
What I really want
is to listen to your stories.
00:06:19.504 --> 00:06:22.382
I'll pause when
you have something to say.
00:06:22.591 --> 00:06:25.093
You can talk about things
as you remember them.
00:06:26.970 --> 00:06:30.641
My life as an engineer began
on this kind of construction.
00:06:30.849 --> 00:06:33.018
Back when the company
was still very small.
00:06:34.311 --> 00:06:37.147
They were doing the second lane, see?
00:06:37.856 --> 00:06:39.775
Did you do this one too?
00:06:39.983 --> 00:06:44.613
I built a road over this mountain,
I even lived there.
00:06:44.813 --> 00:06:45.513
Where?
00:06:45.697 --> 00:06:49.409
I lived in one of these small houses
by the overpass.
00:06:56.416 --> 00:07:00.671
The highest authorities welcomed
President Artur da Costa e Silva
00:07:00.837 --> 00:07:03.840
at the Paranaguá airport,
in the state of Paraná.
00:07:04.049 --> 00:07:08.262
The supreme chief's presence
in the main city of the state's coast
00:07:08.470 --> 00:07:10.138
is historical.
00:07:10.347 --> 00:07:14.518
Paranaguá had never been visited
by a president before.
00:07:22.150 --> 00:07:24.695
After cutting
the inaugural ribbon,
00:07:24.903 --> 00:07:29.199
the President and the authorities
drive up the newly paved modern highway
00:07:29.408 --> 00:07:31.368
all the way to Curitiba.
00:07:33.787 --> 00:07:39.418
I feel that in my life
as an engineer,
00:07:39.918 --> 00:07:44.882
it was only during
the revolutionary period
00:07:45.215 --> 00:07:47.843
that we had a plan
for this country.
00:07:48.427 --> 00:07:50.053
Now we don't.
00:07:50.262 --> 00:07:53.473
Back then,
the regime had this mindset.
00:07:53.891 --> 00:07:56.101
A nation-building vision.
00:07:56.310 --> 00:07:59.479
After 78 years on this planet, you think
this country only had a national vision
00:07:59.688 --> 00:08:01.607
that really worked
during the military regime?
00:08:01.815 --> 00:08:02.816
Yes!
00:08:03.025 --> 00:08:05.903
I think that whole period
00:08:06.111 --> 00:08:12.784
was the only one I know in history
where there was an actual plan,
00:08:12.993 --> 00:08:16.830
with lots of construction work;
00:08:17.039 --> 00:08:22.461
when Brazil was really governed
in a productive way.
00:08:23.462 --> 00:08:26.340
Here,
take a look in this notebook.
00:08:26.548 --> 00:08:29.009
Here we have the five biggest
abandoned construction projects
00:08:29.218 --> 00:08:31.970
from all Brazilian governments,
including the military regime.
00:08:32.179 --> 00:08:34.890
-Why does this happen?
-Go ahead, tell me why.
00:08:35.599 --> 00:08:39.895
Well, it’s clearly for the want
of a good plan for the country.
00:08:40.062 --> 00:08:43.273
A plan that treats
this kind of construction as a priority
00:08:43.482 --> 00:08:44.691
and carries it through.
00:08:44.900 --> 00:08:49.238
Do you know what’s expensive?
Unfinished work.
00:08:49.821 --> 00:08:50.906
Of course!
00:08:51.114 --> 00:08:55.327
Like this, it connects
nowhere to no place at all.
00:08:55.536 --> 00:08:58.247
It makes no sense.
No one benefits from it.
00:08:58.997 --> 00:09:00.632
Except those who worked on it.
00:09:01.124 --> 00:09:03.168
The movie is beautiful,
right, Helo?
00:09:03.377 --> 00:09:06.505
-Oh yes, really beautiful!
-Were you happy with it?
00:09:07.214 --> 00:09:09.967
Is it for the big screen?
00:09:10.175 --> 00:09:13.053
Yes. This test screening
was only to approve the copy.
00:09:13.262 --> 00:09:14.763
Do you want some whisky, dad?
00:09:14.972 --> 00:09:18.058
I poured myself one already,
you took so long to arrive.
00:09:18.684 --> 00:09:23.105
When I was 22, my father and I
had a horrible falling-out.
00:09:23.689 --> 00:09:27.442
He didn’t know what to do with me,
nor I with him.
00:09:27.609 --> 00:09:30.571
And the only way out I could find
was to leave my hometown
00:09:31.446 --> 00:09:33.240
and move to São Paulo.
00:09:35.492 --> 00:09:39.788
The Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant lights up
parts of Curitiba and São Paulo.
00:09:39.997 --> 00:09:41.707
If the plant didn’t exist,
00:09:41.915 --> 00:09:44.835
there’d probably be
a lack of wattage in these two cities.
00:09:47.546 --> 00:09:50.632
Argentina tried to block
the dam’s construction,
00:09:50.841 --> 00:09:54.469
arguing that it could be used
as a weapon,
00:09:54.678 --> 00:09:58.265
blown up to flood an important portion
of the country’s north.
00:09:58.473 --> 00:10:00.726
No-one ever mentions that.
00:10:01.560 --> 00:10:04.354
A lot goes unsaid
under dictatorships.
00:10:04.855 --> 00:10:06.773
In families as well.
00:10:07.566 --> 00:10:11.320
That’s my own translation of family:
family is the unsaid.
00:10:13.739 --> 00:10:17.409
At home we never speak
about our losses.
00:10:59.701 --> 00:11:00.786
Let's go!
00:11:02.913 --> 00:11:05.290
This one must be
the Coffee Highway.
00:11:06.124 --> 00:11:08.544
-Did you build this road?
-I did.
00:11:08.752 --> 00:11:13.131
I was already the company’s director
by that stage. I went there often.
00:11:14.466 --> 00:11:16.969
Dad was not at the hospital
when I was born, right mom?
00:11:17.261 --> 00:11:23.308
When you were born,
I was done with the Coffee Highway,
00:11:24.017 --> 00:11:30.983
and we had a new contract to build
a road from Maringá to Campo Mourão.
00:11:31.483 --> 00:11:33.277
So I moved to Maringá.
00:11:34.528 --> 00:11:38.907
But as the company
was landing other assignments,
00:11:39.116 --> 00:11:42.452
I decided not to take the
family out there,
00:11:42.661 --> 00:11:45.789
because it would have left you
all unprotected.
00:11:52.963 --> 00:11:58.176
This is a railroad,
"Central do Paraná".
00:11:58.844 --> 00:12:04.725
It was a monumental construction project
back then, especially for our company.
00:12:06.518 --> 00:12:08.937
Who was the chief engineer
on this job?
00:12:10.230 --> 00:12:13.525
Well, me.
00:12:16.820 --> 00:12:18.989
What other jobs did the company have?
00:12:19.198 --> 00:12:23.076
The Porto Alegre Freeway,
which was a major work.
00:12:23.285 --> 00:12:27.998
The Rio-Santos road.
All during the revolutionary period.
00:12:28.624 --> 00:12:32.127
During the military regime,
there was no margin for error.
00:12:32.336 --> 00:12:36.298
They were very strict
about deadlines.
00:12:36.506 --> 00:12:39.968
I see...
Let's see those other pictures...
00:12:40.552 --> 00:12:42.721
-That's me.
-You were very young, dad!
00:12:43.222 --> 00:12:44.640
I was young.
00:12:44.848 --> 00:12:46.183
35 years old.
00:12:46.475 --> 00:12:48.602
I'm talking with Andreazza there.
00:12:49.394 --> 00:12:53.232
The military,
no matter what you say Heloisa,
00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:56.485
were very correct on this matter.
00:12:56.860 --> 00:13:02.616
They had limits for corruption!
00:13:03.283 --> 00:13:06.954
There was the political side,
they killed many people,
00:13:07.162 --> 00:13:12.292
also the revolution and everything else.
That's the political side.
00:13:12.876 --> 00:13:18.840
But on the other hand, no one used power
to become a millionaire! They could have!
00:13:19.883 --> 00:13:25.973
Big deal! That's the least
you can expect from a leader!
00:13:26.181 --> 00:13:27.391
In theory!
00:13:27.683 --> 00:13:30.143
There's no merit
in a government for not stealing.
00:13:30.352 --> 00:13:33.063
All I’m saying is that
they had that in their culture!
00:13:33.272 --> 00:13:36.525
I’m going to have
another bite to eat.
00:13:36.733 --> 00:13:38.777
They could have robbed!
00:13:38.944 --> 00:13:41.363
Once the military takes over,
what happens?
00:13:41.572 --> 00:13:43.699
You’re no longer free,
you can't speak your mind...
00:13:43.907 --> 00:13:44.992
There was no alternative.
00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:47.661
You’ve got "Moral and Civic Education"
taught at school,
00:13:47.870 --> 00:13:50.122
you can't talk,
you can't form students' unions...
00:13:50.330 --> 00:13:54.877
I was forced to leave university
in 1984. Get it?
00:13:55.085 --> 00:13:56.253
I understand that...
00:13:56.461 --> 00:14:00.090
It's not about "understanding"!
You can't live like that!
00:14:00.299 --> 00:14:02.050
At the time,
there was no alternative.
00:14:02.259 --> 00:14:04.261
It was so untenable
that the regime fell,
00:14:04.469 --> 00:14:06.972
and we’re still fighting
for our democracy today,
00:14:07.180 --> 00:14:08.515
because we haven't got one!
00:14:08.724 --> 00:14:10.559
Why do I hate
the military regime?
00:14:10.767 --> 00:14:13.562
Because they did whatever
they wanted,
00:14:13.770 --> 00:14:15.522
killed whomever they wanted.
00:14:15.898 --> 00:14:18.483
Heloisa,
I'm not in favor of that.
00:14:18.984 --> 00:14:22.362
But there comes a time,
when there are no alternatives.
00:14:22.571 --> 00:14:23.989
You're in a war.
00:14:24.198 --> 00:14:27.367
Either you kill your opponent
or get killed.
00:14:27.576 --> 00:14:29.119
There's no middle ground.
00:14:29.328 --> 00:14:31.330
Is that okay for you?
00:14:31.538 --> 00:14:32.664
What?
00:14:33.040 --> 00:14:36.043
This discussion? Of course not!
It's pointless!
00:14:36.251 --> 00:14:39.087
-No, there's a point!
-This discussion is not the film.
00:14:39.296 --> 00:14:43.425
I’m gonna cut the camera
and the sound, because...
00:15:09.034 --> 00:15:11.203
I learned to swim
with my father.
00:15:11.954 --> 00:15:16.833
He always told me
to go in deeper, further... and I did.
00:15:57.082 --> 00:16:00.294
While my country was in the grip
of the military regime,
00:16:00.502 --> 00:16:03.547
I was at home
in a cushy bubble.
00:16:04.464 --> 00:16:06.758
My father gave me a horse
and I learned how to ride,
00:16:06.967 --> 00:16:09.678
he gave me a boat
and I learned to sail.
00:16:09.887 --> 00:16:14.099
And I felt totally protected.
I thought the world was perfect.
00:16:21.648 --> 00:16:24.276
I have never found
such perfection again since.
00:16:38.582 --> 00:16:41.168
Oh! This is from Buenos Aires,
Bariloche.
00:16:48.467 --> 00:16:51.887
This crooked leg can only be Helo.
00:16:52.387 --> 00:16:55.057
-Crooked leg must be Helo.
-That's me.
00:16:57.267 --> 00:16:58.560
Look at me!
00:16:58.769 --> 00:17:01.396
Gosh, mom skiing, unbelievable!
00:17:01.563 --> 00:17:04.274
This is the ski resort
we used to go to.
00:17:05.275 --> 00:17:06.985
Did you also ski?
00:17:07.194 --> 00:17:10.864
Oh, I was a hotshot.
But I was scared to death.
00:17:11.031 --> 00:17:14.117
When I got to the end
I just sat on the ramp.
00:17:17.538 --> 00:17:20.082
This was the dream vacation,
wasn’t it, mom?
00:17:20.290 --> 00:17:25.254
It was the only vacation I remember
dad being with us the whole time.
00:17:25.420 --> 00:17:27.130
Only once, never again.
00:17:27.339 --> 00:17:29.967
We travelled a lot,
but he was never there.
00:17:30.884 --> 00:17:32.928
I never used to take a vacation.
00:17:33.136 --> 00:17:35.973
When June, July came,
00:17:36.181 --> 00:17:40.310
Eneida and the children travelled
to a water park or São Paulo,
00:17:40.561 --> 00:17:43.438
I'd take them there,
stay for a couple days and come back.
00:17:43.647 --> 00:17:48.360
He took us there when he could,
otherwise the firm’s chauffeur drove us.
00:17:50.821 --> 00:17:54.533
Wasn't it on that trip that we called
Curitiba, your father?
00:17:54.741 --> 00:17:55.868
Yes, it was.
00:17:56.076 --> 00:17:58.829
And I said: It’s not snowing here
and he said: it is here.
00:17:59.037 --> 00:18:00.956
It was snowing in Curitiba
that day.
00:18:01.164 --> 00:18:03.542
And Álvaro thought
he was joking.
00:18:04.167 --> 00:18:07.421
Are you kidding?
We don’t have snow in Curitiba!
00:18:07.629 --> 00:18:10.841
It was the only day,
that big day it snowed in Curitiba.
00:18:12.509 --> 00:18:15.888
Look, there’s dad! Finally...
Márcia took this picture.
00:18:16.096 --> 00:18:18.056
-For sure.
-Great job.
00:18:52.591 --> 00:18:53.717
It’s snapped.
00:18:53.926 --> 00:18:56.428
Go on a bit more, dad.
00:18:56.637 --> 00:18:58.597
-I can't.
-Why not?
00:19:03.644 --> 00:19:05.437
-The nylon’s snapped.
-Holy Mary.
00:19:05.646 --> 00:19:07.105
I could pretend.
00:19:07.314 --> 00:19:08.815
Ok, go on then.
00:19:22.579 --> 00:19:25.749
It was just after dawn when the
Federal Police arrived at the building
00:19:25.958 --> 00:19:29.086
where former president Lula lives
in São Bernardo do Campo.
00:19:29.294 --> 00:19:31.338
They were there to take him in
for questioning,
00:19:31.547 --> 00:19:33.549
executing a warrant
issued by Judge Sérgio Moro.
00:19:33.757 --> 00:19:36.969
Under Brazilian law,
a judge can order a person of interest
00:19:37.177 --> 00:19:39.471
to be brought in
for coercive questioning.
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:43.600
Lula left São Bernardo
in an unmarked police car
00:19:43.809 --> 00:19:46.228
and was taken to Congonhas airport
in São Paulo.
00:19:46.436 --> 00:19:48.313
As soon as the news spread,
00:19:48.522 --> 00:19:51.859
supporters congregated
outside Lula's apartment building.
00:19:52.067 --> 00:19:54.319
They’re up to something,
aren’t they Álvaro?
00:19:54.987 --> 00:19:57.865
They’re really up to something.
00:19:58.156 --> 00:19:59.241
Who?
00:19:59.449 --> 00:20:04.830
The Workers' Party (PT), the union,
they want to cause a real mess.
00:20:05.038 --> 00:20:06.748
That’s what Globo TV
wants to show.
00:20:06.957 --> 00:20:08.292
The operation is investigating
00:20:08.500 --> 00:20:11.253
ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
and members of his family
00:20:11.461 --> 00:20:13.547
for their dealings with engineering
and construction firms
00:20:13.755 --> 00:20:16.049
involved in the Petrobrás
corruption scheme.
00:20:16.508 --> 00:20:21.889
In total, Judge Sérgio Moro has issued
33 search and arrest warrants
00:20:22.097 --> 00:20:24.391
and 11 coercive
questioning orders.
00:20:24.600 --> 00:20:29.813
The Workers' Party did a lot wrong.
I think they should all be arrested.
00:20:30.105 --> 00:20:34.818
Every single politician proven to be
involved in corruption has to be jailed.
00:20:34.985 --> 00:20:37.696
Not just Lula.
The whole lot.
00:20:38.071 --> 00:20:41.241
But the real aim in arresting Lula,
at this juncture at least,
00:20:41.450 --> 00:20:44.161
is to block his candidacy
in 2018.
00:20:44.369 --> 00:20:47.247
Operation Car wash
has a political aim.
00:20:48.999 --> 00:20:52.002
In the notebook for this film,
I wrote down one more thing:
00:20:52.294 --> 00:20:56.340
When we look at our country’s History,
since the 1930s
00:20:56.548 --> 00:21:00.969
only four elected presidents
finished their term of office.
00:21:01.678 --> 00:21:05.682
From time to time,
our choices are drowned.
00:21:06.892 --> 00:21:08.393
It’s very sad, all this.
00:21:08.602 --> 00:21:11.480
Because I don’t believe
Car Wash will fix the country.
00:21:11.688 --> 00:21:13.065
They are not heroes for me.
00:21:13.232 --> 00:21:15.776
The Operation's aim
isn’t to end corruption.
00:21:15.984 --> 00:21:17.528
Their investigations are biased.
00:21:17.778 --> 00:21:19.071
How are they biased?
00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:23.867
Because they are only investigating
the Workers' Party!
00:21:25.452 --> 00:21:27.788
Don’t you think
Judge Sergio Moro is partial?
00:21:27.996 --> 00:21:32.084
Don’t you think
he’s cleaning things up?
00:21:32.376 --> 00:21:37.881
All around the world
Petrobrás is being prosecuted, Heloisa.
00:21:38.090 --> 00:21:41.760
This is his job,
but he can’t act above the law.
00:21:42.052 --> 00:21:43.637
But above the law in what?
00:21:43.845 --> 00:21:45.847
Just like the military were,
above the law.
00:21:46.056 --> 00:21:48.684
I’m afraid of him,
he could knock here and arrest me.
00:21:48.892 --> 00:21:50.635
-Don't exaggerate.
-But that's exactly what he does!
00:21:51.895 --> 00:21:54.314
There’s nothing arbitrary
in his actions.
00:21:55.732 --> 00:21:57.025
He's acting within the law.
00:21:57.234 --> 00:21:59.444
Otherwise he’d already
be challenged in court.
00:21:59.653 --> 00:22:02.990
Ok, let’s open a bottle of wine
and celebrate the violence in this country.
00:22:03.198 --> 00:22:06.034
Juridically speaking,
he's done nothing wrong.
00:22:06.535 --> 00:22:08.579
All the best lawyers
are with him.
00:22:09.997 --> 00:22:12.374
I won't give up this time.
00:22:12.583 --> 00:22:14.793
I’m not going to switch off
the camera.
00:22:15.043 --> 00:22:19.047
I must go on filming this zone
of conflict and familiarity.
00:22:19.923 --> 00:22:22.134
Heloisa. Álvaro.
00:22:22.885 --> 00:22:25.929
One step forward,
two steps backwards...
00:22:26.889 --> 00:22:30.100
I really don’t like myself
when I’m with my father.
00:22:30.309 --> 00:22:33.353
My movie is about
arbitrariness.
00:22:33.520 --> 00:22:35.147
That's the only reason
we're talking about it.
00:22:35.355 --> 00:22:39.693
Corruption is endemic in our country,
it's our modus operandi.
00:22:39.860 --> 00:22:42.988
What I really want to talk about
is arbitrariness.
00:24:57.581 --> 00:25:00.167
I’m not going to discuss
Sergio Moro anymore.
00:25:00.375 --> 00:25:03.962
Sergio Moro is your hero.
He’s not my hero.
00:25:04.171 --> 00:25:05.589
I won’t argue.
00:25:05.797 --> 00:25:08.258
I don’t have a hero.
He’s just doing his job.
00:25:08.467 --> 00:25:12.179
Yeah, a media-darling,
all handsome. Whatever.
00:25:12.387 --> 00:25:14.765
He's not obliged to be ugly...
00:25:14.973 --> 00:25:18.018
The fact is,
00:25:18.227 --> 00:25:23.106
nothing he has done
has been legally contested.
00:25:23.313 --> 00:25:26.860
Not yet! It just went
to the supreme court yesterday.
00:25:27.069 --> 00:25:29.196
Take a look at the news tomorrow,
then we'll talk.
00:25:29.404 --> 00:25:34.493
They’ve just sent a complaint
to the supreme court alleging bias.
00:25:34.701 --> 00:25:38.539
-Nothing will come of that.
-Not from your perspective perhaps.
00:25:38.747 --> 00:25:40.457
Because you're from a generation
00:25:40.666 --> 00:25:44.044
that believes the military regime
saw its projects through to completion!
00:25:44.253 --> 00:25:45.420
Sure!
00:25:46.088 --> 00:25:50.842
But no doubt the ex-president
is bigger news than anyone else.
00:25:51.051 --> 00:25:52.135
That's not the issue,
00:25:52.344 --> 00:25:54.972
the real point is that Lula is
a contender for election in 2018.
00:25:55.180 --> 00:25:57.182
-No he's not. Hasn't a hope.
-Let's see.
00:25:57.391 --> 00:26:01.562
He’ll be in jail before that, I reckon.
There's no wriggling out of this.
00:26:05.858 --> 00:26:07.901
They went too far,
it’s a shame.
00:26:09.194 --> 00:26:11.947
It’s a shame. It's very sad!
00:26:13.115 --> 00:26:15.826
I need some air. God!
00:26:16.034 --> 00:26:18.704
I can’t stand this Globo TV channel,
it drives me crazy!
00:26:23.959 --> 00:26:25.544
Don’t get emotionally involved.
00:26:25.752 --> 00:26:31.258
How can’t I, with a media like this?
How can I not get emotionally involved?
00:26:32.092 --> 00:26:34.845
There's no way not to,
unfortunately!
00:26:37.180 --> 00:26:38.348
Well...
00:26:38.807 --> 00:26:41.852
I had something very different in mind,
not the TV news.
00:26:42.060 --> 00:26:45.189
I have this map
of the state of Paraná,
00:26:45.397 --> 00:26:46.815
and that one.
00:26:47.983 --> 00:26:49.943
It depends
on what you want to know.
00:26:50.152 --> 00:26:53.989
I just want you to draw a line.
Where’s the pen?
00:26:55.115 --> 00:26:58.869
-A coloured pen would be better.
-Let me get one.
00:27:01.455 --> 00:27:04.750
I wanted us to draw a line
on the map.
00:27:05.125 --> 00:27:06.251
What?
00:27:06.460 --> 00:27:09.213
The main construction sites
you worked on.
00:27:09.421 --> 00:27:12.674
I worked and coordinated
several construction sites.
00:27:12.883 --> 00:27:16.887
In southernmost Rio Grande do Sul,
near the border with Uruguay,
00:27:17.179 --> 00:27:22.976
and a number of smaller roads
in the south-west of Santa Catarina.
00:27:23.894 --> 00:27:25.812
In Paraná,
00:27:26.813 --> 00:27:31.068
I took part in the building
of the Curitiba-Paranaguá road.
00:27:31.902 --> 00:27:37.157
And, the most important project
of the day for Paraná,
00:27:38.200 --> 00:27:44.331
the railroad
from Apucarana to Ponta Grossa.
00:27:45.249 --> 00:27:46.583
Here it is.
00:27:50.295 --> 00:27:56.510
You can see from the map
how important this railroad was.
00:27:57.219 --> 00:28:00.597
It was finished right on time.
00:28:01.431 --> 00:28:04.476
-How many kilometres does it run?
-330 km.
00:28:04.685 --> 00:28:08.981
It really crosses
a good chunk of the state.
00:28:09.356 --> 00:28:11.650
You can see here
what it represents.
00:28:13.527 --> 00:28:18.657
These 330 km made the railroad
shorter and more modern.
00:28:18.866 --> 00:28:25.747
It made Paraná's railroad system
viable, economically.
00:28:43.265 --> 00:28:46.101
What I find really sad
about this country
00:28:46.310 --> 00:28:49.229
is that it's all about protecting
the big landowners,
00:28:49.438 --> 00:28:53.108
that's the priority for congress:
big estates, soy plantations, timber.
00:28:53.317 --> 00:28:58.405
But to generate jobs
and improve living conditions,
00:28:58.614 --> 00:29:01.241
what these regions really need
is industrialization.
00:29:01.450 --> 00:29:08.165
So what we have to do
is to foster the industry.
00:29:08.373 --> 00:29:12.085
So, for the greater good,
I’m gonna just flatten everything.
00:29:12.336 --> 00:29:14.546
Bring in the steamrollers
and that's that.
00:29:14.755 --> 00:29:16.173
No, no... don’t be so shrill.
00:29:16.381 --> 00:29:18.926
But does the greater good need
power plants everywhere?
00:29:19.134 --> 00:29:20.677
It's about nation-building.
00:29:21.678 --> 00:29:24.097
Generate wealth,
you generate benefits!
00:30:53.145 --> 00:30:56.607
MR. DRIVER, PARK SLOWLY
DO NOT BRAKE ABRUPTLY
00:30:56.815 --> 00:31:00.485
DO NOT STAY ON THE LIFT
00:33:28.800 --> 00:33:30.552
This map shows
00:33:30.761 --> 00:33:35.390
only 15 years of your life,
right?
00:33:35.599 --> 00:33:37.893
-Yes!
-The time you worked at CR Almeida.
00:33:38.101 --> 00:33:43.649
In just 15 years you worked on 22 major
construction projects throughout Brazil.
00:33:43.857 --> 00:33:50.030
What strikes me as crazy,
on the personal side,
00:33:50.239 --> 00:33:55.953
is that you dedicated so much energy,
for someone who was only an employee.
00:33:56.161 --> 00:33:58.413
Then you decided
to set up your own company
00:33:58.622 --> 00:34:00.749
and take a shot
at an independent career.
00:34:00.958 --> 00:34:05.754
-Yes and I didn't make it.
-It had nothing to do with the country?
00:34:05.963 --> 00:34:08.423
The country’s got nothing
to do with it.
00:34:10.133 --> 00:34:14.805
I was in class when my father
showed up asking me for the car key.
00:34:16.640 --> 00:34:21.895
From that day on the car was gone
and there was never a word about it.
00:34:22.938 --> 00:34:25.315
Years later,
I realized on my own
00:34:25.524 --> 00:34:28.902
that he had sold the car
to pay off part of his debts.
00:34:29.570 --> 00:34:31.738
The Brazilian economic miracle
was crumbling.
00:34:31.947 --> 00:34:33.615
And the crumbling
started at home.
00:34:33.824 --> 00:34:37.703
Hang on, Heloisa!
It is not like that!
00:34:37.910 --> 00:34:44.251
Don't use me as an example.
00:34:44.585 --> 00:34:48.630
I want to make clear that...
to sum it up...
00:34:50.841 --> 00:34:53.347
... my story is not emblematic.
00:34:53.759 --> 00:34:58.805
You can’t look at my trajectory
and generalize.
00:34:59.014 --> 00:35:03.018
I’m not generalizing.
I’m talking about you.
00:35:03.226 --> 00:35:09.149
I went bankrupt because
I bit off more than I could chew.
00:35:09.733 --> 00:35:13.945
I was too ambitious
and started expanding my business,
00:35:14.154 --> 00:35:19.493
which got me mired in debt.
00:35:19.785 --> 00:35:23.121
It was a struggle, you know?
It took a long time.
00:35:23.330 --> 00:35:25.791
Things wear you down,
you waste time
00:35:25.999 --> 00:35:31.088
because you’re not producing anything,
you’re just plugging holes.
00:37:09.227 --> 00:37:11.271
Oh no, it's snagged!
00:37:11.480 --> 00:37:13.732
I hope it’s not serious.
00:37:15.233 --> 00:37:17.319
Just rewind the film
and it will be ok.
00:37:19.029 --> 00:37:25.702
Rewind it and fit it back
on the sprockets.
00:37:26.828 --> 00:37:28.955
Look! It's you, Helo!
00:37:29.623 --> 00:37:33.502
-Wow, how fast!
-What a show off!
00:37:34.336 --> 00:37:36.630
So small
and already a great swimmer.
00:37:36.838 --> 00:37:38.924
You were the worst swimmer
of all three.
00:37:39.132 --> 00:37:41.718
We both have the same problem
when swimming.
00:37:41.927 --> 00:37:43.428
That’s kind of genetic,
isn’t it?
00:37:43.637 --> 00:37:45.972
I'm a good swimmer,
but I don't glide in the water,
00:37:46.181 --> 00:37:47.474
I have to make an effort.
00:37:47.891 --> 00:37:51.269
Oh God, again! Damn!
00:37:52.145 --> 00:37:54.731
There was a time when
I couldn’t see these things.
00:37:54.940 --> 00:37:58.568
No albums, nothing.
It made me so nostalgic, so sad.
00:37:58.777 --> 00:38:02.614
Especially when I was alone at home,
after the three girls had left.
00:38:02.906 --> 00:38:07.077
Heloisa in São Paulo, Luciane in London
and Márcia, married.
00:38:07.285 --> 00:38:08.412
Recording, right?
00:38:11.123 --> 00:38:12.374
This is reverse.
00:38:13.250 --> 00:38:15.210
Oh God,
I’m doing something wrong.
00:38:15.419 --> 00:38:17.254
The loop is OK...
00:38:22.259 --> 00:38:24.177
I'll show you the problem.
00:38:25.470 --> 00:38:27.889
-The problem is here, in the window.
-Here, look.
00:38:28.181 --> 00:38:32.894
The sprockets
are not running properly,
00:38:33.103 --> 00:38:36.606
the film is loose.
00:38:36.815 --> 00:38:38.734
This one here.
00:38:38.942 --> 00:38:41.319
It's not running.
00:38:42.988 --> 00:38:44.948
Have I changed anything here?
00:38:45.282 --> 00:38:49.411
Let me put the cover back,
because otherwise the light gets too...
00:38:49.619 --> 00:38:51.747
it’s a dichroic...
00:38:52.664 --> 00:38:54.541
Let me take a look at...
00:38:55.292 --> 00:38:58.045
Let’s try again.
00:39:04.676 --> 00:39:05.927
Take it out first.
00:39:07.554 --> 00:39:09.431
Let’s test it.
00:39:09.639 --> 00:39:11.266
No, not in reverse.
00:39:11.475 --> 00:39:14.686
It doesn’t matter.
Let’s just see if it works.
00:39:14.895 --> 00:39:17.189
It won’t work.
Perforation must be on this side.
00:39:17.397 --> 00:39:19.316
It has nothing to do
with the perforation.
00:39:19.524 --> 00:39:22.736
-To go through here.
-There’s no need.
00:39:22.944 --> 00:39:27.324
It’s just to see
if there's a problem with the spool.
00:39:27.532 --> 00:39:33.455
-But why reverse if there’s nothing to...
-No, no. Just to see if it works...
00:39:36.500 --> 00:39:40.754
It’s the reel.
That’s where the problem is.
00:39:42.506 --> 00:39:44.883
This spool is not latching.
00:39:46.385 --> 00:39:50.597
This crappy piece of plastic
has done me in.
00:39:50.806 --> 00:39:53.058
-This spool isn’t good.
-No, it isn't.
00:39:53.266 --> 00:39:55.519
We have to get another one.
00:40:02.651 --> 00:40:04.361
I was 22 years old.
00:40:05.320 --> 00:40:07.072
I was dating this girl.
00:40:07.989 --> 00:40:10.075
We were making out
on the living room sofa
00:40:10.283 --> 00:40:12.035
when my father walked in on us.
00:40:13.578 --> 00:40:16.998
He didn’t know what to do with me,
nor I with him.
00:40:18.291 --> 00:40:19.751
So I left.
00:40:24.506 --> 00:40:27.134
Today, 25 years later,
00:40:27.426 --> 00:40:32.639
I’m doing this film about my father
with Tina, the love of my life.
00:40:34.599 --> 00:40:39.730
Look dad, my partner and I
bought these lenses.
00:40:40.022 --> 00:40:43.567
I store them in a rental.
Tina brought them over.
00:40:43.775 --> 00:40:47.654
My partner owns the rental,
I bought them in the USA.
00:40:47.946 --> 00:40:50.741
Are they good for something?
00:40:50.949 --> 00:40:55.704
They are very sensitive
to light.
00:40:55.912 --> 00:40:59.291
-For dark places?
-Yeah, totally amazing.
00:41:02.961 --> 00:41:05.964
Very high quality lenses.
00:41:09.885 --> 00:41:12.054
We’re leaving the projector here
00:41:12.262 --> 00:41:14.765
so she can show some clips
on her birthday.
00:41:19.269 --> 00:41:21.104
It was 1973,
00:41:22.606 --> 00:41:24.900
at the height
of the regime’s repression.
00:41:25.484 --> 00:41:28.987
I was six years old and my parents
were on a round-the-world trip.
00:41:30.530 --> 00:41:34.409
My father took pictures of Japan,
Hawaii, and, for me,
00:41:34.618 --> 00:41:37.204
it was a whole world out there
to be discovered.
00:41:42.376 --> 00:41:46.213
I’d wait weeks hoping for a Sunday
my father was home
00:41:46.421 --> 00:41:48.965
so he could show us
his travel slides.
00:41:54.346 --> 00:42:00.727
He’d hook up a four-channel stereo and
we’d spend the day traveling the world.
00:42:11.029 --> 00:42:17.369
My father gave me my first camera.
I took my first pictures with it.
00:42:37.305 --> 00:42:42.102
Click on 'add extension'
to close this window.
00:42:56.074 --> 00:43:01.371
I’m just looking for something
I could do for you.
00:43:01.580 --> 00:43:05.167
But we’ve done it already.
00:43:05.375 --> 00:43:08.003
We could do something else.
You know?
00:43:08.295 --> 00:43:11.548
Listen Helo, I think there’s a mistake
in your whole plan.
00:43:11.757 --> 00:43:12.799
Which is?
00:43:13.008 --> 00:43:16.094
I think you ought to settle
00:43:16.303 --> 00:43:22.642
on the final concept for your film.
00:43:22.851 --> 00:43:27.022
It’s more important than
some of the things you’re filming.
00:43:27.230 --> 00:43:30.942
You don’t need more things,
or maybe you need to be more selective.
00:43:31.151 --> 00:43:34.613
Otherwise
you’ll keep filming things
00:43:34.821 --> 00:43:37.491
without knowing
what to do with them.
00:43:37.866 --> 00:43:42.245
The end
is the most important thing.
00:43:42.454 --> 00:43:44.164
Yes, but the film is a process.
00:43:44.373 --> 00:43:49.669
I have to go on
filming in order to build a narrative.
00:43:49.836 --> 00:43:53.465
Why don’t you build
the narrative beforehand?
00:43:53.673 --> 00:43:55.550
I do it while filming.
00:43:55.759 --> 00:43:57.761
But you’re doing the opposite.
00:43:57.969 --> 00:44:01.139
I’m building, filming, editing.
00:44:01.348 --> 00:44:04.726
I filmed and then spent nearly
2 months in the editing room.
00:44:04.935 --> 00:44:08.063
Now I’m filming again,
then I’ll go back in for more editing.
00:44:08.313 --> 00:44:11.858
The narrative is built
through the filming and the editing.
00:44:12.067 --> 00:44:17.614
It’s not an investigative film,
it’s not an interview film.
00:44:17.823 --> 00:44:20.742
But you’re telling a story,
every film tells a story.
00:44:27.916 --> 00:44:29.918
Let me see how far it is.
00:44:41.304 --> 00:44:42.597
Ok.
00:44:43.974 --> 00:44:45.767
Let me just take this cup.
00:44:52.441 --> 00:44:54.651
Which is the better map?
00:44:54.860 --> 00:45:00.282
This one. It's clearer,
but it is not up to date.
00:45:00.490 --> 00:45:03.368
So, what's left to decide?
00:45:03.910 --> 00:45:08.290
We'll either take this way,
the longer one, or this route here.
00:45:08.498 --> 00:45:11.793
The rest seems to be ok...
00:45:12.002 --> 00:45:15.589
In any case, to go through the mountains,
we have to head for Apucarana.
00:45:15.797 --> 00:45:18.341
Sure,
Apucarana is a done deal.
00:45:18.550 --> 00:45:24.306
Up to Apucarana,
there is no other way.
00:45:24.514 --> 00:45:30.771
The question is whether we go
via the Maringá-Cianorte road
00:45:31.521 --> 00:45:37.652
or this one, which is less busy
and perhaps better.
00:45:37.986 --> 00:45:40.364
I suppose we'd have to ask.
00:45:40.864 --> 00:45:43.408
I invited my father
to take a trip with me,
00:45:43.617 --> 00:45:46.536
to visit the place that had
inspired me to make this film,
00:45:47.454 --> 00:45:50.957
to stand at the river's edge and
see the landscape transformed.
00:45:52.751 --> 00:45:56.838
He said that going there
was irrelevant to him.
00:45:57.714 --> 00:46:02.052
We did some earth work here.
I don't know the whole road,
00:46:02.260 --> 00:46:06.181
it's very old, but it's paved,
so it should be good.
00:46:07.766 --> 00:46:10.769
Less busy.
So what are our alternatives?
00:46:10.977 --> 00:46:14.731
Either we sleep in Campo Mourão
or in Maringá.
00:46:15.065 --> 00:46:19.111
Cause from Campo Mourão till...
00:46:21.196 --> 00:46:23.642
-Guaíra.
-Till Guaíra it's 270 km.
00:46:25.525 --> 00:46:26.735
We're off.
00:46:34.201 --> 00:46:38.121
We were supposed to leave at 8:30.
It's now 10 o'clock.
00:46:56.765 --> 00:46:59.643
I woke up early, and my father was
already in the living room
00:46:59.851 --> 00:47:01.561
with his bag packed.
00:47:02.104 --> 00:47:05.440
It’s the first time we travel together,
just the two of us.
00:47:30.966 --> 00:47:32.676
Take the right.
00:47:32.884 --> 00:47:35.262
-Right or left? Left.
-Take a turn.
00:47:44.313 --> 00:47:46.773
-Where are you going?
-Didn't you say left?
00:47:46.982 --> 00:47:48.984
-No. Right!
-Right?
00:47:49.901 --> 00:47:52.362
Hold on. Which way
am I supposed to take, dad?
00:47:52.571 --> 00:47:53.613
Go straight.
00:47:53.822 --> 00:47:56.575
Straight towards
the Telepar building?
00:47:56.783 --> 00:47:59.911
No. Take the first right
and follow the road.
00:48:00.120 --> 00:48:02.372
-Ah, the express lane already?
-Sure.
00:48:38.867 --> 00:48:41.411
-Overtake him. Don’t stay behind him.
-I will!
00:49:14.569 --> 00:49:15.946
-Good afternoon.
-Hi!
00:49:16.154 --> 00:49:20.075
We’re helping DNIT
on a traffic control operation.
00:49:20.283 --> 00:49:22.452
We’ll do a quick interview
with you, ok?
00:49:22.661 --> 00:49:24.663
-Ok!
-Let me get your plate number.
00:49:25.247 --> 00:49:26.665
Do you know what DNIT is?
00:49:26.873 --> 00:49:31.044
National Infrastructure
and Transport Department.
00:49:31.837 --> 00:49:33.338
What year is your vehicle?
00:49:33.714 --> 00:49:38.176
It’s 2011, 2012.
Hold on, let me check.
00:49:38.385 --> 00:49:39.428
It’s 2012.
00:49:39.636 --> 00:49:41.430
-Yes, 2012.
-2012?
00:49:41.722 --> 00:49:45.225
-Is it a private vehicle, a company car?
-It's private.
00:49:45.726 --> 00:49:47.728
-Fuel?
-Fuel!
00:49:48.854 --> 00:49:51.606
-Gasoline.
-Gas. I use gas.
00:49:52.190 --> 00:49:54.443
Where are you coming from?
00:49:54.651 --> 00:49:57.070
From Curitiba,
the city of Curitiba.
00:49:58.363 --> 00:49:59.573
Destination?
00:49:59.990 --> 00:50:02.451
We’re going to...Guaíra.
00:50:07.122 --> 00:50:12.669
How often do you take this route:
once a week, once a month, year?
00:50:13.337 --> 00:50:14.963
Once a year.
00:50:19.885 --> 00:50:22.721
The choice of route was because:
it’s the shortest,
00:50:22.929 --> 00:50:25.599
the fastest
or the only possible way?
00:50:25.807 --> 00:50:29.561
It’s the only possible way.
00:50:30.562 --> 00:50:33.815
The reason for today’s journey:
work, health, leisure...?
00:50:34.024 --> 00:50:35.108
Work!
00:50:36.193 --> 00:50:37.444
Work and leisure.
00:50:39.112 --> 00:50:40.947
We will try to fit
some leisure in.
00:50:42.115 --> 00:50:43.241
That’s all. Thank you.
00:50:43.450 --> 00:50:45.702
Sorry to inconvenience you.
Have a nice trip.
00:50:49.206 --> 00:50:52.376
Lucky us.
00:50:52.959 --> 00:50:55.003
They pick you at random.
00:50:56.296 --> 00:50:57.839
They didn’t even ask,
00:50:58.048 --> 00:51:03.637
“What is this? What’s this camera for?”
Funny people.
00:51:33.500 --> 00:51:35.961
There’s never been a crisis
as bad as this one.
00:51:36.169 --> 00:51:38.171
This has always been
a lawless country.
00:51:38.422 --> 00:51:42.092
There've always been judiciary coups,
it's always controlled by the elite.
00:51:42.300 --> 00:51:44.344
Nothing new about that.
00:51:44.553 --> 00:51:49.308
Heloisa, in Brazil...
00:51:49.516 --> 00:51:53.854
the presidential system
is almost imperial.
00:51:54.438 --> 00:51:58.525
Presidents can do anything,
00:51:58.734 --> 00:52:02.654
they control the congress,
the senate, everything,
00:52:04.489 --> 00:52:09.953
everything but the judiciary.
00:52:10.162 --> 00:52:13.749
And even that,
they may not control 100%
00:52:13.957 --> 00:52:15.584
but they control 50%.
00:52:16.918 --> 00:52:20.839
Well, if the president doesn’t exercise
his power to get things done,
00:52:21.048 --> 00:52:24.259
he has to be taken down.
That’s what happened to the "lady".
00:52:25.761 --> 00:52:28.180
The problem is not the" lady",
it's the country.
00:52:28.555 --> 00:52:31.683
The problem is not the "lady".
00:52:31.892 --> 00:52:37.606
The problem is that there has never
been true justice in this country.
00:52:37.814 --> 00:52:41.735
The problem is our oligarchy, our elite
always deciding what's going to happen.
00:52:41.943 --> 00:52:43.945
It’s always going to be like that.
00:52:44.279 --> 00:52:47.824
This is only happening because
there’s more transparency in the country.
00:52:48.033 --> 00:52:49.910
There is a president
who let it happen.
00:52:50.118 --> 00:52:51.620
-You can’t say that.
-But of course she did!
00:52:51.828 --> 00:52:53.872
She can go to jail.
Lula and her.
00:52:54.081 --> 00:52:57.292
They won’t find anything on her.
It’s very unlikely.
00:52:57.501 --> 00:52:58.835
But she’s complicit.
00:52:59.044 --> 00:53:02.547
Michel Temer is more likely
to go down than President Dilma.
00:53:02.756 --> 00:53:05.801
What changed in Brazil
is that more people had access.
00:53:06.176 --> 00:53:08.345
Now these people
are demanding their rights
00:53:08.553 --> 00:53:12.849
and the interim president
is unable to run this country.
00:53:13.058 --> 00:53:15.060
The law in this country
is not enforced!
00:53:15.644 --> 00:53:19.648
Nothing is done
in the interest of the country.
00:53:19.856 --> 00:53:22.025
I told you once,
but you didn't accept it.
00:53:22.234 --> 00:53:26.071
The only time there was real interest
in the country,
00:53:26.279 --> 00:53:30.909
a real plan of government
was during the revolution.
00:53:31.159 --> 00:53:36.164
The military had a plan.
There hasn't been a plan since.
00:53:36.373 --> 00:53:41.378
What plan?
A plan to build roads?
00:53:41.586 --> 00:53:43.630
All you need to do
is read about it.
00:53:43.839 --> 00:53:45.882
They controlled everything!
00:53:46.091 --> 00:53:49.177
They issued a nationwide
gagging order, AI-5.
00:53:49.386 --> 00:53:51.263
They tortured
and locked people up.
00:53:51.471 --> 00:53:54.016
That was bound to happen
at some stage, and it did.
00:53:54.224 --> 00:53:55.934
It's past. It's over.
00:53:57.936 --> 00:54:02.024
It's a tragedy!
00:54:10.198 --> 00:54:13.076
He says lady,
I say President.
00:54:13.243 --> 00:54:15.871
He drinks beer,
I drink whisky.
00:54:17.164 --> 00:54:21.168
He likes pumpkin pie,
I hate pumpkin pie.
00:54:21.543 --> 00:54:24.755
He says "revolution”,
I say dictatorship.
00:54:24.963 --> 00:54:28.425
He says it was impeachment,
I say it was a coup.
00:54:29.551 --> 00:54:32.554
He is a table tennis ace,
so am I.
00:55:12.010 --> 00:55:14.930
Oh, this pier was...
00:55:16.932 --> 00:55:19.017
...when the water was higher.
00:55:20.894 --> 00:55:25.857
This is the place
00:55:27.025 --> 00:55:29.903
that inspired me
to make this movie.
00:55:32.656 --> 00:55:34.032
Has it changed?
00:55:34.533 --> 00:55:40.580
Yes. It’s become a watery desert.
Everything is drowned.
00:55:40.789 --> 00:55:43.083
This was where I’d planned
to finish my film.
00:55:43.291 --> 00:55:46.211
In this drowned,
submerged place...
00:55:48.255 --> 00:55:50.048
That’s why I brought him here.
00:55:50.257 --> 00:55:52.926
That’s why I really want
this moment to work.
00:55:53.135 --> 00:55:54.720
I try it three times.
00:55:54.928 --> 00:55:57.764
Three takes of the same scene.
00:55:57.973 --> 00:56:01.601
This is the place I told you about.
This place is...
00:56:11.820 --> 00:56:17.409
For him, this place means nothing.
No epiphany.
00:56:21.913 --> 00:56:27.085
This is the place I told you about.
Which inspired me to make the film.
00:56:27.502 --> 00:56:29.713
It’s beautiful here.
00:56:30.213 --> 00:56:31.923
I think it's sad.
00:56:47.939 --> 00:56:51.318
I woke up early, expecting
to have breakfast with my father,
00:56:54.529 --> 00:56:57.324
but he was down in the hotel lobby
reading the paper.
00:56:57.532 --> 00:56:59.660
He’d already had breakfast.
00:57:00.827 --> 00:57:04.122
Then, he asked me:
"Are we shooting today again?
00:57:04.873 --> 00:57:07.125
Didn’t yesterday’s stuff
do the trick?"
00:57:07.376 --> 00:57:09.753
My reply:
"I don’t think so, dad."
00:57:11.004 --> 00:57:13.632
So he suggested
another ending for the film.
00:57:33.610 --> 00:57:39.324
A swimming instructor once said to me:
the movements have to be in-synch.
00:57:39.533 --> 00:57:43.537
While the legs alternate
kicks with a flick of the knee,
00:57:43.912 --> 00:57:47.624
the arms cut
through air and water.
00:57:49.710 --> 00:57:52.004
We have the same
swimming style,
00:57:52.212 --> 00:57:55.882
we don't glide through the water,
we have to make an effort.
00:57:57.634 --> 00:58:00.804
My father and I
don’t have good synchronicity,
00:58:03.223 --> 00:58:05.600
but then I ask myself:
00:58:05.809 --> 00:58:08.729
what does it take
to have good synchronicity?
00:58:25.662 --> 00:58:28.165
But I think we’ve passed it.
00:58:28.373 --> 00:58:31.626
We must be close.
There are so many curves!
00:58:32.127 --> 00:58:33.712
I haven’t seen a bridge yet.
00:58:34.129 --> 00:58:38.800
The big concrete bridges
we saw yesterday in the photos.
00:58:39.384 --> 00:58:42.846
That one I showed you
from the material I’m working on.
00:58:43.055 --> 00:58:47.309
-Yes, that’s what I'm talking about.
-We haven't passed it.
00:58:47.559 --> 00:58:49.519
I’m looking to the left...
00:58:51.396 --> 00:58:53.190
We haven’t passed it.
00:59:01.239 --> 00:59:04.785
We’re late,
but there's enough daylight, right?
00:59:04.993 --> 00:59:06.411
Yes, sure.
00:59:09.331 --> 00:59:10.916
There's light.
00:59:14.086 --> 00:59:16.088
It’s more exciting this way.
00:59:18.048 --> 00:59:20.634
-Otherwise it’s boring.
-How did we pass it?
00:59:20.842 --> 00:59:22.636
It was really close to the toll.
00:59:22.803 --> 00:59:26.348
You thought...since you told me
about the mountains,
00:59:26.723 --> 00:59:29.685
I was assuming we had to go up
the mountains to see it.
00:59:29.893 --> 00:59:32.521
I thought that it would be
easy to see it.
00:59:32.938 --> 00:59:35.232
We have to pay more attention.
00:59:35.440 --> 00:59:37.025
It’s been over 30 years.
00:59:38.694 --> 00:59:42.280
And it must be hidden
by the bushes.
00:59:48.245 --> 00:59:50.414
But we’re still going up.
00:59:54.584 --> 00:59:56.420
Get in here and we’ll ask.
00:59:57.004 --> 00:59:58.630
There's someone there.
01:00:01.925 --> 01:00:04.761
We don’t even have to get out,
I’ll turn around here.
01:00:04.970 --> 01:00:07.472
You can ask him,
over there. Look.
01:00:09.016 --> 01:00:15.022
Hi, can you tell me where
those railway viaducts are?
01:00:15.814 --> 01:00:18.817
-Klabin?
-No, not Klabin.
01:00:19.026 --> 01:00:21.278
The tracks are behind you,
aren’t they?
01:00:21.862 --> 01:00:23.864
Plenty.
01:00:24.489 --> 01:00:26.825
And where are those tall
railway viaducts?
01:00:27.200 --> 01:00:29.703
Up ahead. About 8km.
01:00:29.911 --> 01:00:32.748
Those iron-topped viaducts.
01:00:32.956 --> 01:00:35.208
Yes. The tall pillars.
01:00:35.792 --> 01:00:39.421
About 8 km from here on your right.
You can see them from the road.
01:00:39.629 --> 01:00:41.506
-Good.
-We’re on the right track.
01:00:42.924 --> 01:00:45.927
-It must be around here.
-Yes, it must be.
01:00:47.179 --> 01:00:49.181
But I can’t find it.
01:00:52.267 --> 01:00:53.477
There it is!
01:00:53.685 --> 01:00:55.312
Wow! It’s beautiful!
01:00:55.729 --> 01:00:56.980
Wow!
01:00:58.482 --> 01:01:00.233
Let's see how we can get there.
01:01:01.485 --> 01:01:05.072
Drive that way,
up to the bridge.
01:01:07.240 --> 01:01:09.409
That’s why we couldn’t see it.
01:01:10.702 --> 01:01:13.789
Take the right there.
01:01:16.667 --> 01:01:19.169
The railway is in front of us,
01:01:19.378 --> 01:01:21.505
but I can't get there
because of the bush.
01:01:22.214 --> 01:01:24.675
Take the right.
01:01:31.515 --> 01:01:36.645
It’s amazing! Let me just back up,
Dad, and arrive again.
01:01:36.853 --> 01:01:38.313
-Dad?
-Yes!
01:01:43.318 --> 01:01:48.198
We can’t go too far
because it's not safe.
01:01:49.783 --> 01:01:53.495
The danger here is... That’s why
those safety areas are there.
01:01:53.870 --> 01:01:54.997
What areas?
01:01:56.081 --> 01:01:57.124
Can you see that?
01:01:57.332 --> 01:01:59.459
That’s where I save my life,
then.
01:01:59.668 --> 01:02:00.919
Yes, but you better not go.
01:02:01.128 --> 01:02:04.089
It's too risky. If a train comes,
it will come at high speed.
01:02:04.297 --> 01:02:05.924
There are no more trains today.
01:02:06.133 --> 01:02:08.635
The shot is there dad,
we should both go there.
01:02:08.844 --> 01:02:11.179
No, I won’t.
I’m afraid of heights.
01:02:11.596 --> 01:02:13.849
-Are you afraid of heights?
-Yes.
01:02:14.016 --> 01:02:17.311
I didn’t know that. So that’s why
you're not walking around here.
01:02:18.770 --> 01:02:20.105
Be careful here.
01:02:27.029 --> 01:02:29.656
For someone who’s afraid of heights,
this is wild, Dad.
01:02:29.865 --> 01:02:33.493
Oh, I’ve been all over here...
01:02:34.870 --> 01:02:36.246
This is crazy!
01:02:38.040 --> 01:02:41.376
Bosses are bosses, right?
01:02:44.379 --> 01:02:45.630
Bosses are bosses!
01:02:46.548 --> 01:02:48.258
Just look at this view.
01:03:31.718 --> 01:03:35.013
Damn!
01:03:39.017 --> 01:03:40.852
Dad, come over to the side!
01:03:41.061 --> 01:03:42.187
Where?
01:03:43.438 --> 01:03:44.564
Wonderful!
01:03:44.773 --> 01:03:45.816
See?
01:03:46.024 --> 01:03:48.110
No, don’t worry, dad.
01:03:49.903 --> 01:03:52.030
This is amazing.
01:03:52.239 --> 01:03:55.242
Don’t stay here, that train
must have around 80 cars.
01:03:55.993 --> 01:03:57.452
It’s a very long train.
01:04:02.374 --> 01:04:03.750
Look, it’s spectacular.
01:04:07.587 --> 01:04:08.839
He’s seen us.
01:04:18.348 --> 01:04:20.309
Look how many cars it has!
01:05:00.307 --> 01:05:03.435
Wow, that’s a lot of cars.
01:05:05.020 --> 01:05:06.980
This is like...
01:05:09.691 --> 01:05:12.611
In the old times, the bigger
compositions had up to 30 cars.
01:05:12.819 --> 01:05:17.574
Nowadays they have up
to 100 cars to make it viable.
01:05:20.827 --> 01:05:22.287
What did you say, dad?
01:05:25.290 --> 01:05:27.167
What did you say, dad?
01:05:27.376 --> 01:05:32.756
To make it worthwhile economically.
They freight...
01:05:45.310 --> 01:05:48.605
Isn’t it cool that we can see
a bit of the sun setting over there?
01:05:48.814 --> 01:05:51.984
We see the sun setting through
the gaps, when the train passes.
01:05:56.989 --> 01:05:58.323
Look now.
01:06:02.244 --> 01:06:03.829
The gap.
01:06:16.967 --> 01:06:19.136
Do you know
what made this possible?
01:06:21.430 --> 01:06:27.894
The track design
made long compositions possible.
01:06:29.563 --> 01:06:35.110
Look at the sun setting over there.
Look at the moon! The moon over there.
01:06:49.082 --> 01:06:55.047
