In Australia, the giant eucalyptus forest extends over three million hectares. This tree, nearly 100 meters high, masters the art of fire: its oils fan it in order to clear the forest and ensure its reproduction. Around it, the ecosystem has adapted: the potorou regenerates the forest by eating truffles, as for the lyrebird, by raking the ground to feed itself, it limits its flammability. Because here the fire must be neither too intense nor too frequent. However, certain human activities cause mega-fires. The flames have become enemies, endangering its inhabitants: from the large flying phalanger that feeds on its leaves to the multiple species nesting at its feet, because it is also a refuge tree, guardian of an entire world.
Series Description:
Secret networks, Wood Wide Web, superorganism… A scientific and discovery series, Of Trees and Forests opens the doors to a world we only thought we knew. Committed scientists, researchers, indigenous people and more guides us in our quest to unveil the trees genius, their interconnections with other animal/vegetal species and the invisible but fully interdependent ecosystem behind it. Through one legendary tree, each episode explores a primary forest with its own climate, fauna and flora. By revealing their superpowers (purify water, stabilize the climate, stock energy, reduce flooding and erosion…), the series serves as wake-up call to remind how urgent and important it is to preserve our endangered forests.
